Separate religious influence from religious intellect. There are A LOT of christians out there creating great philosophies, pieces of art and scientific observations. You just want to make "God" look like a word a fool would say.
Leonardo! The greatest scientist of the Renaissance. From Marco Polo to Michelangelo to Him, my Italia has produced some of the greatest men in the history of #mankind.
I think that, like de Vinci not being able to participate in the scientific community because he didn't know Latin, the majority of the world's "genius" have been born into regions where intellectual growth was not possible, or into cultures that were later wiped out. The Renaissance was great because society was very advancement-positive and ushered shitloads of freedom and intellectual growth.
My friend and I recently had a discussion about da Vinci. I now have something new to bring to the discussion. Yet another time I can say "have you seen that Sci Show where...."
*Da Vinci* still has influence on our culture today. Ever wondered why it's considered "impolite" to have your elbows on the table? Look no further than *Da Vinci's* painting *The Last Supper*. In the painting, Judas is the only disciple with an elbow on the table. Since then, it has been deemed "impolite" to have your elbows on the table because you are said to be identifying with Judas. You are no longer ignorant concerning this matter. - *nowUknow* #davinci #mindblown
nowUknow how is it evident that this is the reason for us not to put elbows in the table? How do you prove it wasn't just the opposite: DaVinci showing everyone around the table is good except Judas, who, as every one of his contemporaries would see, was inappropriate?
Also where we get the superstition about spilling salt as Judas knocked over the salt with his elbow while it was on the table. Look no further than the painting itself to confirm.
And a horse-drawn death chariot that would sweep blades to cut enemy soldiers off at the knees. A built version has never been discovered, but the drawing exists.
Vlad Masters im not fully sure that this is correct, but one was built. the scythes were attached to a carriage, but it didn't work well since the blades moving scared the horses.
Could you do a Great Mind on an Arab scholar, I feel the Eastern world is neglected, regardless of their great innovations, greatly before the Western world.
To be fair. There are few universal geniuses that even come to the level of da Vinci. So he just happens to be part of the western society. It has nothing to do with neglecting or discriminating or silencing Arabic sciences. Even though in my experience with some Arabic people I discussed these topics with, they tend to claim some things that simply aren’t true. I have no problem with these people but it seems to be common
I like the new theme and the new intro. Thank you for toning it down a bit from the previous video, though. This was far less distracting. Great video!! DFTBA
he truly was a genius, a person inspiring us that no matter if your observations or innovations are not appreciated now, if they are correct, one day the world will agree with you. Lots of Respect!!!
Jut to reiterate: thank you for toning down the eye-straining flash transitions, removing the distracting moving stripes behind graphics, and muting the background :) Much better. Now, back to relevance! Leonardo was the man. Very few people, if anyone, were so far ahead of their time, and that's a real testament to what can happen when you stick with the scientific method and combine fields of art science together. It's a matter of systematically looking at how specifics fit into the big picture, and what better way to understand the big picture that is our universe?
I work at a pizza place named after DaVinci... it doesn't exactly do him much credit, but we do have some pretty awesome wallpaper with images of his artwork and technical drawings all over it.
To be great is to be remembered for centuries. Same with Beethoven, they may have not been the wealthiest people at the time, but their works inspired so many and still do to this day. I think creating good art is way more powerful than money and fame can ever be. Always strive for greatness no matter what, don't be mediocre.
There was a short Sci-fi story where da Vinci was a stranded time traveler which is why he knew all this stuff way before everybody else did. Loved it as a story concept.
Knowing about these great minds throughout history made me realize; most of the super-geniuses came from humble beginnings or otherwise from normal parents & family. Leading me to believe great intelligence can't be produced but instead completely accidental & a freak of nature (no offense to any of them, I think freaks are awesome). Can scishow cover the reason these great minds exist in the first place?
***** I think you're convoluting what being an educated person is and what being a genius is. To be educated is to hone your intellect, your smarts, to reckon things you wouldn't have thought of, to teach the wisdom of those who came before. However, all the education in the world isn't going to make an average person the next Leonardo. I don't think upbringing has a profound effect on being a genius - sure you might have a more concise and clear way of thinking, but the method of discovery that is so inherent to genius cannot be taught.
***** And that is the part with which I do not agree. I think that genius is as much a gift as a disease - it manifests regardless of whether it is appreciated by other people, history, etc and so, it does not require education - it is aided by it, but isn't it's product. In other words, I don't think you can nurture somebody to be a genius, I think you're either born with it, or you aren't. By the way, on the topic of geniuses and their life, a great book to check out is "East of Eden" by John Steinbeck. Really recommend it, if you haven't read it already. (BTW the genius bit is a subtopic of a subplot, not the main plot, so you'll have to delve in the book to find it.)
Ian Stance en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuroplasticity i agree with eddie, Depending on how your are raised and what you experience during your developmental stages effects how you think due to the strengthening of neural pathways in your brain, which means that curiosity, memory, creativity, synthesis which are all traits of genius' can be developed. Generally speaking people aren't born with inherent intelligence or lack there of. Unless caused by factors such as substance abuse when in the whom etc.
Eamon Glavin I agree with Ian. Nurture can help one reach their capacity, but that capacity is decided by nature. Genius is something beyond merely a high level of intelligence, I would say. People like Einstein, Da Vinci, etc. seem to also have a certain intuition about things that other people simply don't have and I feel like this is the in-born part of genius.
You could probably make an argument that Leonardo's lack of Latin probably was a contributor to much of his knowledge, having not been taught incorrectly.
i saw a documentary about him where scientists looked into his inventions and according to their conclusion at the end of the documentary said that the ideas where not originally his and that he just artistically perfected them. please correct me if im wrong or more like correct them if you feel theyre wrong. either way he had so many other areas that he was good at and even if its true that it wasnt his inventions hes still my favourite genius of all time
Your next video should be on the science behind "Why People Don't Like Change", cause since the new video background/opening the btiching hasn't stopped.
First off: It was a joke. Hank made a joke, as he usually does. Secondly: Who the hell gives a damn? I mean seriously? Everybody who knows the ninja turtles, knows they were named after them. jesus...
An important point bought out by this clip is (when innovative ideas and expressions come about) the SHARING OF IDEAS, and conversely the loss of ideas (sometimes because they are kept secret), and the sharing of ideas across geographic and cultural boundaries, and the crediting of the innovators involved. Another idea is incentives to be innovative, but apparently some people, such as Da Vinci, don't need incentives or provide their own incentive -perhaps curiosity is enough for some people.
Yes, I LOVE the new look! You guys at SciShow are amazing for listening to the fans! :D You know what I probably like the best about Da Vinci? I think that, like de Vinci not being able to participate in the scientific community because he didn't know Latin, the majority of the world's "genius" have been born into regions where intellectual growth was not possible, or into cultures that were later wiped out. The Renaissance was great because society was very advancement-positive and ushered shitloads of freedom and intellectual growth.
Justin Young The renaissance, the first age of the nerds
TheYopogo Best statement about renaissance ever! :)
@@TheYopogo lmao
Can you name one scientific discovery that he is attributed to.
My friend and I recently had a discussion about da Vinci. I now have something new to bring to the discussion. Yet another time I can say "have you seen that Sci Show where...."
Proud to have his first name. This guy is outstanding.
lucky
I learned most of this by playing assassins creed!
Same, also Niccolò Machiavelli
hey look it's my profile picture
Christopher Coghlan The resemblance between you and his painting is uncanny.

- *nowUknow* #davinci #mindblown
nowUknow Damn you davinci!
it is so comfortable :(.
nowUknow how is it evident that this is the reason for us not to put elbows in the table? How do you prove it wasn't just the opposite: DaVinci showing everyone around the table is good except Judas, who, as every one of his contemporaries would see, was inappropriate?
people who ask on youtube for likes and subcribes should follow your footsteps.
@@catherine_404 I'm sorry, I can't seem to understand what you're saying. Pls explain further.
Also where we get the superstition about spilling salt as Judas knocked over the salt with his elbow while it was on the table. Look no further than the painting itself to confirm.
I was not expecting to find Hank Green here
Currently doing a class presentation on him and this video helps out a lot, thank you! Can't help but to find that he's actually a really cool dude :)
The word "codex" just reminds me of assassins creed.
I also hear that he made war machines for the Assassin and Templar orders. :)
No, but he did create a medieval version of a tank.
Janessa Frykas or there might be an awful case of friendly fire reducing the mobility of such units
Vlad Masters Scythed chariots existed at least two thousand years before his time.
Could you do a Great Mind on an Arab scholar, I feel the Eastern world is neglected, regardless of their great innovations, greatly before the Western world.
Cry more Achmed
@@zabrak999Who’s crying?
This episode looks better than the previous.
I think Leonardo's achievements should teach us to encourage kids who tend to care about "silly" things.
You are completely right about that. How are you Quinn?
I like the new theme and the new intro. Thank you for toning it down a bit from the previous video, though. This was far less distracting. Great video!! DFTBA
Imagine what Leo would be earning if he was in our time.
Me still thinking of those brothers who said "Da Vinki?"
Chi is pronounced "ki" in Italian language
he truly was a genius, a person inspiring us that no matter if your observations or innovations are not appreciated now, if they are correct, one day the world will agree with you.

Hello...Erin how are you ?
To be great is to be remembered for centuries. Same with Beethoven, they may have not been the wealthiest people at the time, but their works inspired so many and still do to this day. I think creating good art is way more powerful than money and fame can ever be. Always strive for greatness no matter what, don't be mediocre.
Pffft. This doesn't even acknowledge the work Leonardo did for the Assassins. Fucking Templars altering history as usual..........

Hello...how are you Irina?
There was a short Sci-fi story where da Vinci was a stranded time traveler which is why he knew all this stuff way before everybody else did. Loved it as a story concept.
Knowing about these great minds throughout history made me realize; most of the super-geniuses came from humble beginnings or otherwise from normal parents & family. Leading me to believe great intelligence can't be produced but instead completely accidental & a freak of nature (no offense to any of them, I think freaks are awesome).
Can scishow cover the reason these great minds exist in the first place?

I think you're convoluting what being an educated person is and what being a genius is.
*****
And that is the part with which I do not agree.
Obviously... If you think intelligence is anything but chance you're just being stupid.
You could probably make an argument that Leonardo's lack of Latin probably was a contributor to much of his knowledge, having not been taught incorrectly.
Thanks for reminding us about this man's genius.
I want more videos like this! Love it!
Hello there! How are you?
He was a great cook and lute player too
mmm yes Leonardo Da Vinki
i saw a documentary about him where scientists looked into his inventions and according to their conclusion at the end of the documentary said that the ideas where not originally his and that he just artistically perfected them. please correct me if im wrong or more like correct them if you feel theyre wrong. either way he had so many other areas that he was good at and even if its true that it wasnt his inventions hes still my favourite genius of all time
Your next video should be on the science behind "Why People Don't Like Change", cause since the new video background/opening the btiching hasn't stopped.
i hope the world gets blessed with such intelligent people
“Nothing can be loved or hated unless it is first understood.”
Leonardo da Vinci.
Marie Curie said something similar: "Nothing is to be feared; it is only to be understood."
That ninja-turtle joke cracked me up so hard :')
It's actually not a joke. All the four ninja turtles were deliberately named after Renaissance artists.
First off:
It was a joke.

He is incredible
Wow
Yes, I LOVE the new look! You guys at SciShow are amazing for listening to the fans! :D
You know what I probably like the best about Da Vinci? Not his biggest achievements (though I truly do admire those) but the small fact he was known as a huge procrastinator. That relieves some of my own anxiety about procrastination.
