    300PPI or bust! Right? How many times did you run into a comment or sentiment expressed "Device not having 300 PPI is a deal breaker for me" or "I'm just disappointed it's not 300 PPI". I get it, higher numbers are better, right? But are they automatically, or is there more to it than that?
    We all know that Kindle Scribe genuinely has one of the nicest 10.3" e-ink displays on the market. It's crisp, smooth, clear, and all of that must be because of the 300 PPI, right? Well, things are not quite that simple. Check the video and see for yourself :)

    *IMPORTANT CORRECTION!* I've made a critical error in this comparison! Please watch the follow up video and the 300 PPI comparison for the clarification of the error, and corrected results.

    Thank you very much, Voja !
    It's a breath of fresh air to see the objective comparison with some insight of the host instead of the common way "This is my opinion and these are the evidences that supports it".
    Just couple of comments:
    1. Very subjective - but when I look on the first somparison with lowest zoom I much more prefer the look of Boox fonts. Maybe they render the fonrs the wrong way, but as a result it's much easier to read (although my eyesight is far from perfect even in the glasses, so maybe I'm biased because of this). But on the second zoom (fit width) this effect is much more subtle, so maybe it's also UA-cam compression playing with the text.
    2. On the full zoom I have a feeling that Onyx's black is blacker. Maybe this also adds to better readability of the text. Or maybe it's an optical illusion due to the font rendering - black bubble on the white background is simply bigger and thus perceived as deeper black.

    I actually like the right side before zooming, I think it looks better just because it is darker due to more pixels being black there.

    The contrast is much better on Boox, I prefer read on it than on Kindle Scribe. Kindle Scribe is better when zooming but I don't read a book with full zoom... Can you please also compare the Supernote and the Remarkable 2 ? For information, I've got a Supernote A6X2 (I bought it after seeing your videos... thanks!) and I really love it !

    I tried comparing between my 227 dpi Likebook Mimas and 300 dpi Air 3C for reading manga:
    - For reading manga the resolution of the image matters a lot, low res looks blurry on everything, only very high resolution pages (4000x3000 ish) I can notice a difference between the ereaders and even then only on very large text and lines (i.e. screaming text bubbles).
    - High resolution images for manga are rare only some scanlation teams do that. Digital published manga and most scanlation can range from 300 dpi for a 10 inch screen, to 300 dpi for a 8 inch screen to awful 720p sizes. For any of those its not noticable unless I really look closely, not at normal reading distance.
    I am considering selling my 3C and getting a 3, because about 5% of the time the lower dpi on the 3 may be noticable but 100% of the time the lower contrast on the 3C is noticable.

    Thanks for creating a great tool for people to compare the devices. IMHO I actually prefer the readability of the Boox device. While I agree the font accuracy is clearly better on the scribe, to me, the visibility is ultimately reduced due to the overlying top surface...that is why I think I ultimately prefer the Boox device as the font rendering ultimately presents the font into my eyes more accurately (detailed) at a normal reading distance. I can actually see the fine lines of apostrophes better (same for finer details of the other characters).

    Thank you for your objective review, Voja! It's good that you chose PDF to reduce the software induced differences, but apparently software still matters. You pay not only for the hardware, but for overall combo.
    It would be interesting to install the same software on both devices (e.g. Koreader), but one would have to jailbreak Kindle in order to do this, and it can be undesirable.

    Well, I can't see any difference. Yes, the font is bolder in Boox (and easier reading for me), but in terms of resolution, my eyes see the same thing. Perhaps the mind, unconsciously, can detect something ... I don't know.
    Thanks, Voja. Very enlightening video

    Hey, how is the 227 ppi screen on RM2, when compared to scribe and boox? so is RM2 screen same as or better than the boox tablet as you talked about the screen texture at the end of the video?

  • @annvoy7698

    Hi Voja, you raise some interesting points, thank you!
    Have I understood that correctly, that on the Boox the book is shown in the Kindle app? Intuitively I do find Neoreader generally clearer for pdfs than the Kindle app on my older Boox devices, maybe because the fonts are rendered better? And Amazon are the ones being responsible for the Kindle app, which has as much as I know not been specifically designed for e-ink devices. I doubt they would be interested in raising the font quality for nonproprietary devices. Or can the manufacturers like Boox or Ratta actually influence the rendering of third party apps?
    Initially on the fit to page screens and the slightly zoomed in ones I also seem to prefer reading briefly on the Boox as the contrast is higher, but experimenting reading on it for longer I seem to find the lower contrast and the lighter grey and finer lines on the Scribe actually more soothing. So I wonder if adjusting the contrast settings on the Boox would make the font appear less harsh? But then these settings are different again between the Kindle app and Neoreader.

    I imagine that this might be beneficial for some non latin glyph based languages, I can certainly imagine Traditional Chinese for example might benefit from the increased dpi.
    Re the font rendering issues this could either be poor font hinting or poor subpixel rendering on the part of Boox. I wonder how it deals with Chinese here also.

    My dream e-ink screen would be a black and white 400-dpi screen with much darker blacks.
    I have the current gen Kindle Paperwhite and can still see pixels even at typical reading distance, and the blacks are quite grey.
    Maybe the kindle Paperwhite could look better with different software options but as we know Amazon does not give us much control in the OS

      @MyDeepGuide  3 місяці тому +3

      Well, that's really not the point, as a non-PDF file opens up a can of worms that makes an objective comparison almost impossible. That's why PDF file gives and apples to apples comparison, and why I will be using that in future comparisons.

    • @bluein2red423
      @bluein2red423 3 місяці тому +1

      @@MyDeepGuide I agree, although to be fair PDF rendering is very variable too, as I think your results showed. I’d be interested in at least an informal epub comparison, just to see if the BOOX shows the same tweeting etc issues (which imo aren’t down to resolution alone).

    I own a Note 2 Plus (227 PPI and built in protective glass), but I’m not satisfied with the screen at all. I have been using it for note taking. But to be honest, it is just useless for me, for reading, as the text is not clear. I just bought Kobo libra 2 (300 PPI, no additional glass), which has no feature other than reading epub (as kepub). The screen is perfect. I have already finished a book. If anyone else also sensitive this aspect, do you know same screen but a large one?
