Last time, I've compared 300 vs 227 displays (and made a critical error!).
This time, I wanted to compare different 300 PPI displays to see how do they stack against each other, and which factors truly matter most in a real-world situation.
We all know that Kindle Scribe genuinely has one of the nicest 10.3 displays on the market. It's crisp, smooth, clear. Let's see how it compares to the 300 PPI displays of Boox Note Air 3C and Tab Ultra C Pro!

I did not watch the earlier video, but still very nice to see someone own up to their mistake. This is very valuable comparison.
Thank you for your continued integrity and thoroughness in all you do! You are very appreciated!!
First of all big respect for the correction! Really adds even more trust to the channel! The new comparison showed me that I really don't mind a 227 ppi screen, even the view of one letter looked equal to me. As you said, the film on top of the screen seems to have a much bigger influence.
Given the old vs new video, it would be great to see the highest zoom in the diferrent modes of the books device side by side! Also I would love a comparison of all the currently-important devices in that zoom level!
Maybe it's less noticeable in person but immediately the image on the left looked sharper to me while the image on the right looked slightly blurry (the 300 ppi vs the 227 ppi comparison) - almost like it was a bit out of focus. Maybe it was more the contrast as you say.
More interestingly, does the extra resolution extend to the hand writing? - one thing I don't like about my reMarkable2 is the pen strokes look pretty low resolution, especially when viewed on a laptop.
Hi Voja, thanks for another interesting video. I am glad that you mentioned what I also percieve. That despite the darker background, the color devices to me seem to have more contrast than the black and white ones.
Great comparison Voja, thank you. It was interesting to see that the letters on the two Boox devices were a bit pale and not as punchy as on the Kindle, I think it is an optical illusion because of the darker background. I am quite happy with my Note Air 3C, mainly because of the paper-like writing feel (I use a Kindle Scribe Premium Pen). The only thing that bothers me a little is the slightly dark screen.
According to the specs, both the Boox devices have a 300DPI Carta screen with a Kaleido 3 colour filter array overlay for effective 150DPI in colour.
Your videos are great.
Can you tell without front light which is better among NA3, A5X & A6X2?
Like which is more clearer & less grainy?
I'm weird apparently in that I don't use my larger Boox devices for handwriting at all, much preferring a good quality Bluetooth keyboard to a pen. As such the visual quality of the screen is what matters most to me. I bought both the Air 3C and the Tab Ultra C Pro in order to compare them, and ended up returning the 3C because the "paper-like" layer did make it the less clear screen for me. There wasn't much in it, but enough (and I like the extra speed of the Pro too). I do find it odd that anybody could prefer the 3C over the Pro when it comes to pure reading quality ... I didn't quite get the explanation in this video of why this was, I think because you felt you could see the colour layer more clearly and it was distracting?
Yes, it is precisely because of that :)
@@MyDeepGuide Thanks, I must admit I didn't notice that when I had them side by side, only the extra sharpness. Probably my old eyes!
That will be down to the eyesight and personal preference. To me, I really do appreciate and love the sharpness of the content on the TUC Pro, but the matrix was simply too present and too distracting for me, personally.
Note Air 2 to Tac Ultra C owner here, my eyes immediately appreciated the improvement in crispness. Also, I read 90% and write 10% of the time, so I also do not care so much about the writing-on-paper feel. When I had to remove the scratched screen protector in my NA2, I saw much better clarity. This video confirms that part of the crispness has to do more with the lack of the screen protector than the increase in dpi. I never noticed the color matrix and I think Voya has a slight bias against the Tab Ultra :) From this video for me the Tab Ultra C is the clear winner.
Could you compare the supernote to one of the other 300dpi devices in terms of reflectiveness, image quality and contrast? Because you would have to use a reading light for the supernote but have less of a gap between the surface and the screen.
Thanks for the interesting review. I would be great to se a comparison with the Supernote A6X2
This is so interesting and i think it may have me leaning towards a tab mini c. I loved that clarity. And actually being prone to migraines a bright background can be painful for me. So i think the better clarity and darker backfeound would feel more soothing to my eyes? Wonder what everyone else thinks about that?
I've bought Tab Mini C last year and it was just beautiful and so fast. I gave it away due to the size being bigger to carry around in my work bag and now waiting for Onyx to release Page c. I get eye strain from reading on my phone. I can read for hours on Boox devices and get no eye strain at all. I think you would like it.
You are a true scientist.
It would be great to see Kindle Scribe vs Remarkable 2 comparison.
Is there a list of 10 inch eink readers without the paperlike film? I enjoy my Scribe, but that film makes text so blurry compered to my 7 gen Paperwhite.
very nice thnx
Hi there! What do you think about software? I have 7" Kobo Libra2, and I want to buy 10" device for reading PDFs. As I understood Kindle Scribe has better screen, but BOOX Tab Ultra (B/W) has much better software. Price is the same.
And I expect that Koleido is not useful for long time reading, that's why I'm choosing between b/w devices.
Have you set the Scribe contrast to 4? It makes a huge difference in PDF's
Hi, went through some of your old vids, great stuff! My question is - do you have some list of devices without this "bubble film" on top of the epaper device? I want to use this thing only as a reader, and don't plan to use stylus with it at all - its clumsy and I have an ipad with pen to write if needed. I have troubles finding a good bright (high whiteness, not kaleido) device in 10inch size with no film on top AND capable to open large pdfs.
Then I think the solution to you may be Tab Ultra (monochromatic) from all devices I know. It does not have that "bubble film". The film there is just dimming reflections but leave crisp content and the screen appears brighter compared with devices with paper-like film.
Or the NA3
Or the NA2+
Can the paper like surface be peeled off the note air 3c or is that destructive?
Not possible, as it is laminated onto the screen.
As I mentioned in previous comparison video, my experience with Boox Air 2 Plus (227 PPI) vs Kobo Libra 2 (300 PPI) is that the difference is day and night. Kobo Libra 2 screen is perfect and I wish same screen type but a bigger size would be available some day.
Well yes, there would be a very big difference, because one has a paper like film on top (NA2+) and the other one doesn't. The difference would be made even more apparent if you were comparing EPUB character rendering on Kobo to PDF on NA2+, as EPUBs are always going to be way, way crisper.
Higher contrast on the scribe would've been interesting to see. Good job regardless
Thanks, will get to it, learning and sharing as I go :)
I wonder if the screen size matters. How about a Scribe vs AX62 comparison?
It doesn't matter, as 300 PPI reflect physical density of the resolution that is not screen relative, as PPI stands for Pixels Per Inch.
I did think the previous video showed a difference in rendering rather than dpi so I was half way there and very much appreciate the update. It looked slightly bolder to me, like heavier, 10% of the way between normal and full bold rendering. I think Scribe would be easier to read if the font wasn't so thin. But from a rendering and accuracy of font point of view, what I'm saying is unacceptable!
Whoa, thanks for the correction!
I didn't expect such little difference either. Maybe it'd show more without the film, but... the film's great.
And yes, too much sharpness it tiring...
Weird that a comment of mine in r/ereader has been deleted for misinformation due to linking to this video to support my claim that there is no significant difference in definition between 300 and 227 dpi.
Maybe because the video shows examples of 300 PPI devices?🤔
(thanks & appriciation)
Voya you are one of my best examples for a pro-reviewer.
(questions - that I guess you are getting to :)
Can you speak to the "contrast" (I hope I'm using the right word) and how to measure it.
if the black text on white background is too thin, does it mean lower contrast?
if the white background (the main image light source) is too-bright, does it mean lower contrast?
is the best contrast level withing a single word/character image, A personal prefrence?
(personal driving tension)
I really hope that if LAs (Learning Algorithems) get more involved in the reviewing business, they will have a sense of "honor" that will allow them to not only admit misttakes, but acknowledge their probable source, and as you are behaving: "Acknoledge the issue of Bais" (so good).
The key to managing racizm is acknoledging bais! reopening those "hash exaggurations" to find more realistic understandings detached of simplified relations like "race x" -> "action Y", incoporating systemic view of ppl habits - how to replace trashing with recycling, replace colture misunderstanding with understandings and compromise, and so on.
(ongoing conversation subject)
The issue of Bais - Must be our biggest issue! In the whole world, At this time!!
Bais can be GOOD or BAD.
- It's so hard to realize your own bais!!
- It's even harder to fix or patch a bais in a habbit
- don't know if it's possible to fix a biased LA or do we just limit usage of that LA.
The comparison would be valid if all devices were set to the same background brightness, but as it is there is only one argument for energy saving
What do you mean? The front light was turned off on all of the devices, so the "brightness" is the same.
@@MyDeepGuide Your statement is correct from a certain point of view - namely from the physical point of view, the percentage value; but not from the numerical value that the eye perceives.
For the viewer the theory is irrelevant, he sees a darker white, but cannot see a darker black - so he sees a smaller difference between black and white.
Only if the brightest areas of all devices match is the viewer able to compare the darkest areas.
So what you are doing is manipulation by showing the underlying Carta screen with less light on the Kaleido color devices
I am "doing manipulation" by showing how the devices and screens actually are and not artificially compensating (which would be physically impossible to do in this case) for the shortcomings of specific technologies? Wow, you really got yourself into a pretzel here, all on you own. Well, you seem to have it all figured out, so I'll leave you to it.
No, it does matter, especially in fast modes. Formy reading experience, I prefer to read replica newspapers on my Note Air / Tab Ultra C. For this, you need faster modes, otherwise scrolling through pages take too long, and tire your eyes, which beats the whole point of the device... And in 227PPI you can not read anything but the headlines. However, in 300PPI, one can read nearly everything, and after a quick read of the small lettered body parts, if I prefer to, I zoom in, although I do not have to... (I have to say that the ghosting and refresh rates are also better in Ultra C) . So it made a HUGE difference in my newspaper reading experience...
You compare apples to oranges, the better refresh rate and ghosting between the TUC and the NA is because of the BSR (Boox super Refresh technology). I see what you mean because I have the same tablets, but it is not the dpi that makes the difference
@@skipper63400 I am aware of the parameters and mentioned it before. One can isolate the parameters when the screen is static.
What do you mean fast mode please ? Having more content/text on the same page for vertical reading ?
@@arm8636 these readers have various refresh modes, hd mode being the best for static pages, balanced, fast or ultrafast for scrolling, internet browsing or sifting through pages. Down side is ghosting, you see traces of previous pages to some degeee. In ultra C, these traces are taken care of by the display chip so well that balanced mode and fast modes are really usable. In note air that was not the case. 227 ppi can not afford to lose some pixels to speed up the refresh rate, whereas 300ppi can.
@@arm8636 there are balanced, fast and ultrafast modes on boox
The fonts are whatever, who cares. Its all readable. Show the difference in image quality, like in comics and manga
As an example: I care the crisp fonts, and not interested in manga.
The fonts show the differences in image quality on the finest level.
