- Dry test run with 3 phase applied to the 42 Pole F&P Smart drive motor.
This motor has pretty good torque. Speed is 144 1/7 RPM.
Old VCR and some 12 Volts SLA batteries were inserted to see what would happen.
3 Phase obtained via rotary converter. 3 x 230 Volts
Ahh the old VCR and SLR cycle.. Thats my fav wash cycle of all :P
That cogging sound at 38 seconds is amazing :D
My parents have the Fisher & Paykel GWL11 washer; it spins at 1000 rpm which means it must be clocking the motor at 700 hz. Classy. Guess that explains the amazing jet engine whine it makes.
To engage the basket to the agitator, you have to just press down on it. There's a set of splines that interlock. The idea is, the floaty ring at the bottom of the basket will raise it up once it's full of water and that allows agitation. Once it's drained it'll allow spin. It allowed them to get around having to add a transmission.
Thats exactly what that jet engine whine is a smart drive or BLDC motor is. Its the motors drive/inverter maing that noise as it "Ramps up." What you are hearing is the drive Frequency from the drive/inverter itself as it spins up.
umbrefawx
Well hearing it through the windings I should say.
@@UmbreWolf the whine is not caused just by frequency, it's also harmonics of the magnetic field interacting with the windings. I always thought the speed of the BLDC motor was controlled by the voltage, not the frequency
Never thought of putting a permanent magnet motor on 3 Phase till now.
very nice ray :)
I take it the washer works perfectly aside from having a blown inverter or control board. My top loader all I needed to fix it was a $10 pump insert. Now good for another decade.
I must say, the VCR's housing was shaving off the washer's plastic shielding! I wouldn't wanna have my hands on that part when it was in motion! O.o
The batteries were trivial it seems to get thrown inside and in place and eventually it stalled the motor. Amazing! But I would love to see that hooked up to a REALLY powerful motor and then spinning a shitload of nuts and bolts! :P
LOL I done this a few years back and the VCR broke the belt on the drum.
I really should look out for more old washing machines as its very fun.
Actually... hmmm... I just remembered something useful and silly. These F&P motors come with a rotor position sensor that's a 3 stage Hall effect sensor. Directly connecting the Hall sensor outputs to mosfets to drive the windings will make the motor free run.
HOW FAST CAN YOU GET IT?! :D
Jealous guy here
This is a brushless motor. difficult to come by
Needs more RPM's Ray :) Good effort though mate ;)
good job washer
Very good keyboard systèm
Omg it has a direct drive motor!!!! Before LG used them!!!!!
Ah I love the sound of the SmartDrive motors, but this one is only running at a fraction of it's original speed.
interesting, may try that with my F&P Genny!!
You need to build a mechanical VFD. With a DC motor running an AC generator.

It has a direct drive motor
1:10 drum broken with agiator
Just how are you going to hang those out to dry on the glowing washing line? Your pegs will either catch fire or not hold.
LOL !!
yeah would spnin much higher at a better frequency, id like to see how one of them 3 phases direct drive motors would work on a VFD, seeing as they can give the higher frequencies needed to drive this motor. It will only spin so fast at 50/60hz. Think them motors are designed ffor at least 300-400hz maybe more.
These BLDC motors run from pulsed DC in the washing machine controller, hence why it has the hall effect sensors
@@LoganT547 Not all of them, some of them are AC driven with an inverter. some used pulse dc, some use AC. I know at least 3 brands that do so. But regardless from old comment I know that idea doesn't work, vfds l run at lower frequencies then the inverters in the machines that drive the 3 phase ac/bldc motors.
@@LoganT547 You replied a comment created 7 years ago ? Wow
If there is like large battery on front of the washing machine WOOOOOW like that one just lift
Should have set off some car airbags inside as well. Maybe fill it with Jello or something.

I think the VCR is all nice and clean. Pop it into the dryer and you'll either have a fresh crushed up VCR or a nice destroyed dryer. What's bad about that?
I bet the heads were really clean after this. I'm not sure if the tracking would have been true though... or does it have auto-tracking?
didn't think it'd run on 3 phase!!
They are true 3 phase motors. you can get them to run faster with your VSDs
RODALCO2007
Maybe it would be worth programming a drive to run this SR motor properly.
douro20
Yes but I haven't got a spare drive. This WM was a road find.
RODALCO2007 Wye connect, as I recall?
hyvahyva
I'm pretty sure they are wired in star but I can't recall, There was another smart drive dryer I took apart that was different then these F&P, that one was wound in Delta, I could be ass backwards on that though. Pretty sure the F&P's are WYE though.
Well, that's one way to clean a vcr!! The ? is, will it work! Lol!!!
I didn't even know that I would take that much. By the way This is a Fisher & Paykel Pride MW612
No, it's newer than that
@@LoganT547 It's a MW612 Phase 7. I know that for a fact.
@@liftrailphotographyinnz3992 if you say so then. No need for the arrogance
Logan T Sorry if I did sound arrogant.
hehehe i was so mutch lounching xDD
This is not what they mean by, "Please be kind. Rewind."
the picture will be bit washed out
Why don’t you take the battery out when that drum is not turning that will get the drum to time if you take the battery out
I think you voided the warranty on that VCR
wouldn't want to be your neighbors XD
on second thought...I might but only if you let me watch XD
That's the same washer as mine
vvĺ v6ķĺ7879t
Oh come on. I would expect the VCR to be at least playing a tape or something.
i think it would be a good idea to hose it down wile its running lol =3-
it would have been more funny if you added power, and made it so fast that it destroyed itself.
rip vcr
It Sounds Like A Drill
New video
I suppose the moral of the story is don't put a VCR or Batteries in a washing machine ;)
I thought those motors were BLDC type!
They are.
douro20 how's he running it on AC?
Mac Man
They are called brushless DC because they are driven using a zero-crossing modified DC square wave. An AC waveform will drive them just as well, as the DC signal used to drive them actually mirrors the phase relationship of a 3-phase AC waveform.
douro20 ahh is that what it is! So its DC 3 phase that drives them. Thanks for telling me that, I never knew they worked that way!
Mac Man
Dc brush less motors are typically AC or pulse DC themselves. They are called brush less DC motors because they require a DC input, the motor itself however is driving with circuitry and drive transistors and fets running on pulse DC or AC waveforms. So even through the motor is running off a DC supply, the motor itself is technically driving by artificial AC or DC pulses. (depending on the design of the motor. Bypass the electronics/ drive circuity and and you can run most Brushless DC motors like a 3 phase AC one directly at the windings. Which is whats being done here.
hey! I know that sound...
What sound
😇
no safety shoes on
this washing machine gets destroyed by 3 phase
electromagnet motor pls don't destroy it give it to me
lame, do it like Mr. Photon, annihilate it :::D
