I have a problem with Word changing the spacing between some words in a paragraph but not others. I have tried this and it shows the typical dash of a space followed by more space. I 've trying copying a normal space and pasting it with the option keep formatting but to no avail. I desperately need help as I'm in the process of writing my thesis and only chose Word over OpenOffice for it's "superior" formats (mostly for math)

You might have turned on justification, which is in the Paragraph group on the home tab. Try selecting your document (or the part that isn't formatted as you wish) and see if the justify button is highlighted. Here's a video that shows you where the button is: ua-cam.com/video/287oIpzp1ms/v-deo.html

My problem is not related to paragraphs. When I press the space button between some certain words it inserts a huge space. If I select the paragraph it's in, right click and go to Font, Advanced, Spacing it will make the spaces between these words even but only if choose the whole font to be expanded or condensed. Whatever I do though it doesn't seem to work in normal and if I select only the space and go to the the same menu it says that the spacing is normal. I've literally started the process of rewriting it side by side in LibreOffice in a Linux desktop (a much better alternative as it uses a standard text format instead of a proprietary one that changes every 3 years), as I no longer consider Microsoft as a distributor of professional software.
PS: Thanks for the reply though
