    most tattoo artist, if not all start out with the label scratcher.. how else would you do it, everyone starts somewhere, yes I agree it is dumb as hell that people with very little artistic talent buy garbage shit and go out tatting locals, or should I trashing locals, but you cant label and assume everyone is like that, some of us "scratchers" have a love for art and tattooing, and we use are brains by learning to be sterile as fuck, and learning the basics, before going out to lay down some ink on ppl.. point is not everyone is a dirty scumbag that is out tatting ppl in there basements.. some of us actually are going by the code, only suffering from not having the ability to open a shop.. not having a shop should not make a difference when it comes to skill and dedication to tattooing.. fuck all you big time artist that make it hard for beginners to start in the tattoo industry, knowing the struggles ppl experience and gp through daily trying to make art and tattooing their career.. it pisses me off to see professional artist putting beginners down before giving them a chance.. obviously someone gave you a chance which led to your tattoo career.. why don't we deserve ours?

    • @bombinnerds

      +bombinnerds and instead of putting them down.. why not try to help mold them into a great artist.. don't be that douchebag that puts some down and tells them they shouldn't continue pursuing their DREAM.. everyone just needs a chance.. why cant we help each other out by sharing tips and tricks and opinions on things as friends, hell you never know you might learn something from "the dirty scratcher ", no matter what it be.. big or small.. im always down to hear ppls way of doing things, they might just know some shit I don't.. and who the fuck doesn't enjoy learning, especially if its learning about something you LOVE..

    To each his own really.I like to setup the air gap at about 4-5mm and the contact gap at about3.5mm-5mm....but this also depends on springs,i like to use soft springs like 16 ga,i generally like a little wider of a spring on the back and thinner on the front for color machines.Also i like to use a heavier armautre bar.this lets the machine have more pushing power with running softer and slower.

    Thanks for all the info man! I actually found some great machines at a great price. butim still lokking for other machines that I dont have to fork out an arm and a leg. so if you find any please give me a heads up. Do you know where I can get some good coils for a good price?

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  14 років тому +2

    Followthrough relates to the movement of the front spring off of the contact point,while pressure is being applied by the rear spring.Any chatter or skippage results in a reading of other than 0.Small minute adjustments can change this number.The angle at which your contact is set,and contact gap are the most common.Adjust the contact gap a little and retry.For liners as almost up and down angle is good for you contact,while for shading its better with about 7-8 o'clock look.

    @edgarsanchez1904 Speed just means the needles are going to go up and down faster(cycle).You can tattoo with as fast as a cycle as you want,thats totally up to you.When I do portraits and want a smoother gradiation I tend to use a faster running shader.But speed is going to determined more by your tensions in the springs,gaps,and capacitor than anything.IT is definitely not determined by more voltage.I like 90-110 CPS for most shading...for smoothes like 120-125

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  11 років тому +1

    Actually spring length is only designated for the machine you are using.A longer spring will have different tension than a shorter one,but if you can only use one spring then you can only use one.A machine should have springs made for it to be as good as it can function.But I have longer springs on some liner than my shaders and vice versa,tension is the key with those.

    @63Eco ive seen scratchers fix a lot of tattoos from pros and the finished product looks amazing. i can understand that there are definately a lot of them out there that are either really bad or are not sterile and they r the ones that should get the negativity and not the ones that actually do a good job at it. I dunno about most places but where I am from, its really hard to get an apprenticeship let alone find a decent shop that can even do good tattoos but there are good scratchers here

    I really struggle to understand why there is such a negative attitude from tattooists toward people wanting to learn. It's an art and yeah I agree it should be shared and loved. Some people can't actually get apprenticeships. Because of that, does that mean they have to stop wanting to do the thing they love or have a real great interest in? I don't think so. I'm starting out and it's vids like this that help a lot. I know the rules, the do's and don't. People who want to learn aren't stupid

    im a "artist" and i always wanted to tattoo,im just learning and im glad theres people out there that help us scrachers.For people to come out and say that were messing up the industry is bullshit! Some people including myself dont have the time to be someones slave in a shop and work for free just so one can teach them,to old for that shit, i have not tattooed anyone and will not do so till i have learned from reading,seeing and practice. All u need nowadays is COMMON SENSE,anyhows great video

    Did good on the vid bro I like the way I have mine set which is about the same flex in the bar for a shader is always good tips for non pros if you keep the needle at the edge of the tip it won't go in far at all for outline makes straighter and non blown out lines and shading and coloring go a lil deeper

  • @Fooman48
    @Fooman48 12 років тому +1

    look at the gap between the top of the front coil and the bottom of the armature bar (the bar right above the coil) the gap should be smaller on the liner and larger on the shader, you are probably going to need to adjust and tune both a bit to find that "right" setting

  • @skinhead1975
    @skinhead1975 11 років тому +1

    Perhaps if all you "pro" artists out there didn't charge so much there wouldn't be the need for all us "scratchers",people are gonna tattoo from home no mater what so get of your high horses and give advice if your so good we are no threat surely?

    @parsleysprigs not always does the sound say alot...you can have two liners and one sound differently.The materials they are made from can make a difference,also having an o-ring makes a big difference.The best way to feel out the voltage need is to start with it barely running and increase til it hums steadily,but at the same time its not loud as hell..right when it has that steady sound is usually the sweet spot,just make sure it has enough punch forthejob

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  14 років тому +1

    @74ALW rs-round shader......rl-round liner.....m1-weaved mag....m2-stacked mag.....f-flats...........they come in different sizes.....ranging from 1 needle and ive seen up to 100......liners are for lining.....round shaders are for building lines/and small shading......weaved mags are good for color and greywash....stacked mags are good for tribal(but they tear skin easy)...hope this helps

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  14 років тому +1

    I do not really do portraits,but when using a tattoo machine especially when shadig you want to hold the machine at 45 degrees to the skin for even application.And most of the time people use what is called a short stroke shader,which i do not show you how to do.make sure you have enough voltge,your arm bar should hit your front coil whie running,also try messing with your contact gap,like i said before this will do good but maybe not for everyones liking,some people tattoo differently

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  15 років тому +1

    I will clarify as much as i can...the air gap is taken from the gap between the front coil core(the metal inside of it,pretty much the middle) and the armature bar....to truly get the best measurment you should remove the front spring for this...basically this gap should be at least the gap your trying to acheive on the contact gap...but it can be more...the more bend in it the harder it will hit but the more voltage it will need too...but there is a lot more to it

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  15 років тому +1

    thats generally how they are set....depends on the tattoo to whether i use one or not though....I have a long stroke and shorter stroke as well....the shorther stoke fills a little faster and shades the color in better but the long is slow and not a roughh on the skin.....my long is running at like 80-105 and the short runs 90-110

    Just wanna say thanks so much for posting these videos. Bottom line, is tattooing is an art form and we should treat it like one. You don't see guitarists telling someone "No, you have to apprentice under me, clean my house, polish my guitars and let me treat you like shit for a year before I teach you how to play guitar.." or someone who paints telling someone "Well, you have to apprentice under me before I teach you to paint". So, why is tattooing any different? Art is art. Thanks, man!

    I have a important question. When shading do you do like a check mark kind of shade or always keep the needle in the subdermis and just use different tones of grey? The first part of my question is like this, do you put the needle in for dark and pull out while making a sweeping motion Making it less dark the shallower the needle is?

    well i gotta say i dont condone being a scratcher at all but this guy does for the most part know what hes talking about. and as for kits they are a waste of money. you can get way better shit if you just piece it together. not having a license does hinder you guys from buying from alot of good places but their still is quality sites that will sell to you without one. as for machines build your own. even if you use a cheap frame that has all the correct geometry and decent parts you will have a kick ass machine. i own a ton of major brands from workhorse to infinite but my single pass liner that i use day to day is a no name frame. given it has hand wrapped coils and all quality parts it only cost me about $110 compared to 500.

    hi there. thx for this video, is awseome. i hope is not to late to ask u a question!!! i set up my machine for lining (micky sharpz No0027) but i have a little problem... i use a hurricane power suply at 6 volts (cuz the sound of the machine i think is perfect) but the duty is at 31% and speed at 93 hz. i have to mention that i get good lining but i wonder why is that readings on my power supply... if i try to get the voltage higher the sound is bad. write me back budd. thx alot

    • @paultaylor5839
      @paultaylor5839 8 років тому +1

      Hi there. Im just a scratcher but I have made most of my machines myself and they all run sweet. The danger of running to low a duty cycle is that the needle is spending too much time in the skin which can lead to nasty snags and blow outs if you go even the slightest bit too deep. Firstly have a go at putting a little more bend on your back spring then set the gap again on your contact screw. You will find that the machine now needs more voltage to run ( maybe closer to 7.5 v) but your duty cycle will have crept up. I have a slow handspeed for lining and my machines run around 120hz an all run bang on 50% and between 6.5 and 7.8 depending on the length of the throw. The Hurricane is perfect for learning to tune - because it gives you all the readings you need. Hope this helps.

    theres many ways I can use the same identical parts and make two different machines.Most of it is tension of the springs,having different guages help,but still need to be set right.Smaller uf capacitors will make a machine dump cycle shorter so it makes a faster machine.the gaps all around are made by tension and adjusted accordingly witht he amount of tension desired....theres a lot to it man been building and fixing machines for years now and still elearn a new trick here and there

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  12 років тому

    WRONG,4mm to bottom of abar!Its just for tension really,not all machine are bent on the rear deck.With that said I have two aaron cains,a bj johnson machine and neither of them are angled.Springs are made shorter and longer,and unless you are cutting your own getting the distance from deck to bar is going to differ.Throw,strok...they are the same,you using the word you choose doesnt make you right.O-rings are designed to silence a machine,if tuned they dont change function.

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  12 років тому

    its FATTASTIC as in fat...lol...I have never had an issue with that before.Are you using rubber band,maybe add another.The moving of the needle draws in into the tip,but with most tips they have a washout well and it should never make it past that.Dip your machine in the ink without it running then hit it running for a second,then wipe off excess on tip and then tattoo with it.The needle should never hang out more than a couple mm's not running.

    For one if you were an artist you would NEVER call it a gun.Guns shoot bullets,make bangs you know they're guns!!!!And alot of it is machine,if I give you a machine that doesn't work,how you gonna tattoo with it?Thats right all that control you have...lol....THats just like saying a $5 chinese machine is the same as $300 aaron cain production machine....its not,why work harder to do the same thing?You are obviously a bad artist,if you dont care enough do anything properly

    @cricketts801 Depends .....I tend to search ebay here and there for used machines...but sometimes people sell fakes up there and you have to know what you are looking for.I raarely buy new machiines if I do its mor for the frames and then i customize....but good for cheap try ustattoosupply....as for good coils krayola has good ones just not cheap...national tattoo supply decent bobbin type coils and cheap....ebay just dont get cheap ones...average is about 20-30 a pop

    @KODB123 you can....and if you only have one machine you amy want to invest in two...if not make amchine pretty much on the in between of a liner and a shader and keep the front binding post tight but loose enough to change the angle a little bit to make it run fast and then slower...you will see what I mean if you try it...witht he contact point further down the front spring it will tend to hit a little harder..(cutbacking)

    @heybuddie5914 most power supplies are only rated for 2 amps to 3amos...anything more can kill you if it arcs a spark,As I ahve been shocled before...lol...so dont risk death,maybe you need a power supply that uses voltage.But you want 50% duty,to get that you may need different tension in your springs,or your machine could not have good geometry.check you gaping and adjust while running.and I never really go on duty,its more CPS as you want about 125-150 with no needle.

    @JETHO321 First of all make sure you use some type of lube all over the tattoo before you begin...and put a lil bit down each time you re ink..THIS is what makes the ink come off easy..I dry wipe out lines and it works everytime all the time.I tend to semi wet wipe color and it will get all over the place someitmes,but just use lube and go in small intervals with that and wiping...and if you need to use more towels

    @fattasticvoyage  12 років тому

    @MrBosta77 Prices all over the US tend to average around $150 an hour,but most shops will charge you $300 for an hour long tattoo as well...that $150 an hour shit only slide when ur sitting for 4 plus hours,and still they try and fuk ya.But even some of the bests in the business only charge $150 an hour..nick baxter/bob tyrrell...both used to charge that two years ago,im usre its not much more and they are great

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  12 років тому

    @99Panzer1 its not needed,I like it because I build machines from time to time and it takes guess work out of it by alot.CPS is sycles per second,lets u know how fast ur going.....FT is foulings..they are not good and genrally want 0,and u can usually hear them....duty is relevance of contact to non contacted....and can be figured without...as far as cps go feel out what u like and you can get a tension guage and find out whats perfect for your next build

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  12 років тому

    @twiztid0001 Adjusting the duty cycle is easy,if you have a power supply with it just movet he contact til its at 50,but this might throw off your gapping if tension of the springs is not right.As for without one to get at %50 you need a flourescent light or I do at least.YOu look at it running and u will see the bar like flutter and wave...like you see two bars and springs....tune it until it looks like one or close to it....the slower the wave the closer u are..

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  12 років тому

    @edgarsanchez1904 Duty is how much the machine is in running mode to shut off mode...pretty much contact to not contacting....And it should always stay as close to 50 as you can get it.A PSU is not needed with duty,as if you are in flourescent light you can look at the wave adn tune it til it goes away and you are pretty much dead on....but duty readings do help I guess.....I jsut dont even look at it anymore I hear the sound and feel the tension out

    @magnetic0314 You should know what you are talking about before you comment!In my state there is no health certificate,YOu can get a permit to tattoos if you are in a business zoned tattoo establishment.They have to be certified as so called SAFE by the health dept..As for the artist they are asked a few questions into proper technique,which most a five year old would know.Like wear gloves and throw away needles in a sharpz container,and dispose of trash properly....no talent needed....

    @ninaandray1 I love the ease of money,and as far as any job I can thinkof near baout the money turn around is phenomenal...it at most counting sanitizers,inks,needles,power used,and anything else imaginable to do a SAFE and beautiful tattoo doesnt usually cost more than $5 and thats on the high end,especially if you have autoclave and sterilize.So thats $5 ...on something you can charge the skys limits for really.Better than a drug deal in my opinion...lol..just time consuming

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  12 років тому

    @iandegia REad first VVVVVVV......... ITs probably your rear spring again make it have less tension and try that,amke sure the whole machine is lined up good as well...it can be many things that make a machine run bad and I wanna make some more vids covering more into it.But check your gaps and geometry of the machine itself it all should line up and the springs as well...and it should be good...and dont worry about voltage just use enough to make it run good...

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  12 років тому

    @iandegia Makes no since...Maybe you have too much tension on your rear spring.The more layers in a coils tends to use more power as it takes more to magnetize,although the magnets are stronger then(this is sometimes)...I generally dont like anything bigger than 8 wraps,they get hot easier and in long sessions will tend to make a coiled machine run weird when it gets too warm.IF its a decent machine and the geometry is right and the coils are GOOD its probably more in the tension...

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  12 років тому

    @cricketts801 I would not reccomend him,although his coils are very nice but the price is high,plus he doesnt use pieced machines anymore so they tend to be good frames....and they do look nice now....but his prices have almost doubled...I paid like $80 each but I also gave him all the parts on the machine except the frame and the binders...he just made the coils with my stuff.....sorry to say I felt ripped off...if you want a good machine your gonna pay for it or get lucky one...

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  12 років тому

    @cricketts801 As for the other machines they were made by krayola.They btoh were not in running condition when I got them NEW from him.The craftmanship was horrible,and one did not run at all and the others had a screwed on springdeck that was corrked and made the machine run like shit.I had to put work into them to get them running.I told him about it and he did not really make me feel better just saying he used a dremmel for all of it and hes sorry,but sorry dont cut it when I want perfection

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  12 років тому

    @cricketts801 I have never ownde a DV8 machine and never heard of them at that.The first machine I show is an Iron workhorse I do beleive...its a cheaper machine like $50 when I got it.ITT sells them as well as us tattoosupply......They are good frames but definitely need attention when you get them.They usually are not shimmed very well and tend to nee major tuning for proper running.I usually change the springs and add a few things here and there...but for the price cant be beat...

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  12 років тому

    @SarahBelle5695 Tellem BRO....I tend to not like the term scrathce but its what is deemed most of the time.As usually when a pro or so called pro artist says scratcher they are intending that one just scratched the skin and no inkis inserted and in an unsanitary matter....which I assure is not what I dish out....sort of sucks that most shops around here beg me to work there and I just decline

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  12 років тому

    @FIEHOT23 Most people do not get any recognition.THe shops near me always post on FB different things hating scratchers,but I like to go to those shops look at their portfolios and see the difference.Most of the time I see none or they tend to be worse than I have become.But there are some who blow me out of the water in my opinion,but not that many.Its all opinion and I just see some styles as me not being able to do,but then again thats not my style.

    @69vwratrod Wish I got that kind of business...I dont have a big clientel,its all word of mouth,although 75% percent or more of my customers are repeat I cant tattoo someone but so much before they are covered...lol..plus when I first started I tended to be fairly cheap and now I dont charge as much so most of the clients have started complaing,but hell I gotta make a living.they can get my girl to dye their hair and charge them 75 but me do a tattoo that last forever for the same and they bitch

    @fattasticvoyage becuae in the end of this all it is art....and we are artist,not debaters on whats right and wrong.I am sorry you had to bust your ass and pay a feee to get an apprenticeship,its like that here,no one wants to teach anyone,and in my opinion they shouldnt unless they have 15+ years of experience.But then you end up someone old school teaching you old tricks,when the new ones are so much better...to eachhis own..keep inking

    @fattasticvoyage just as clean if not cleaner than most shops I have seen.I didnt just pick up a machine and poke people,I knew how it worked before I used it,I knew all I could...yeah i hit bumps along the way but I worked through them.Some ofthe best work I have ever seen came out of someone that taught themselves,and again some of the best work ive seen has been done in prison.Im not saying go to a shop im not saying go the the nigga down the road,im saying let their work speak.......continue

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  13 років тому

    @canonlawnyc You forgot to mention the fact that they charge more because the artist only gets half of that....lol...then what about some people are greedy,around here minmum fluctuates from 30-80 bucks...so definitely some greed there.Also got to think coverage costs...supplies are cheap yes but lights and bulding isnt....but saying crap comes from someone doing it at there homes is bull too...my tattoos come out great,I am begged to work in a shop,and my shop at home is (continued...

    @STABFIELD Pleas edont say that shops are over priced....its sort ofcontridicary.....Most shopd mark prices by the owner or manager,which makes them set the price not the artist,plus half of that goes in owners pockets...alot of the times a price is set really high so the owner gets more of a cut when the artist would do it alot cheaper.....be mad at shop owners...saying nothing bad about tattooing urself...more power to you

    Respond to this video...they actually talk to me like a human being,its not a act of legality or anything like that.Is called professional courtesy.My art is just as good as theirs,im just as safe as they are,but where they have a commercial building,i have my own residential shop.And like i said illegal is harsh t some,in my state you can get permitted per day like for conventions,and also get a permit for any tattoo type business that is ran on a appoinment basis...so ha ha ha

    @lunam0547 funny.....different states different rules.No your mad someone is stealing your business,which is sad,is that all its about money.I love my job I love tattooing,to you its all about trying to crew someone,maybe you are right,maybe this industry does need to die,just for screwballs like you.people need to unite not fight,art need to be spoke about not bitched about.thereis no shop for 50 miles from me,but everyone knows im here,and they all want me to work for them..and unlike you

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  13 років тому

    @lunam0547 right you started from the bottom and worked up....funny thing is if someone at the house is screwing your business then apprently he should be in the shop and not you...i cant tell you how many tattoos i fix from shops and other people...and this is my living.where you say you ownthree shops,its not yours its your emplyees...this is mine,if i dont tattoo i dont eat...

    @lunam054 No people like you do a great job of fucking the industry in the ass.Everyone starts somewhere,and so far some of the best i have ever seen didn't get an apprenticeship.I am not telling anyone in this video any unsafe practices,just tuning...but you watched this video...what does that say.Ive worked in a shop,crappy customers and little pay,and I havent seen a shop yet as clean as my private studio.Just funny its dicks like you that still needed my info,that are mad cuz they arent ME

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  13 років тому

    @gadigadigadigadi one.....its a machine not a gun...use a shader typ mahcine for shading and a color machine for color.....as for tribal i usually use a color machine just depending on size of it,if its small tribal i will usually use a small mag for the whole thing or if has lines ill use a small shader in my sculpting liner...but usually grab ur color machine and let it run good and pound in black...just dont tear up skin...should not bleed that much at all....

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  13 років тому

    @TheThefugitive
    voltageis not important,use enough to properly run the machine,nothiing more...you will get used to what power works better for what parts of the body as little adjustment help....but nevr a big incrase.....heavier a bars are usually used for colring machine,it give it extra weight to push bigger needles and adds a good punch...and I willl use a color machine for my heavy blacks,especially if it a color machine as im gonna blend my color with black anyways...

    @benlashley I have no idea what to say to that,there are pros....nate beavers....brandon bond to anme a few,thatdont know shit about machines theyjust use them...so really to day this is for a begginer is sort of wrong,its just extrahelp to those that want it...if you understood anything in the video you would know what i mean....and thanks,look at most of my comments,its helped tons of people out thank you very much

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  13 років тому

    @ndsquared the ink will only go into the skin a little over a mm or so,not deep at all...why are you rying to go deep?A proper running machine at the right voltage will put the ink in just right no matter how hard you press it,or mine do anyway,sort of like they adjust themselves to depth.But maybe you need t stretch the skin more,thats usually a big problem,stretch alot...add more throw to ur contact gap...try going a little slower....its something u have to feel out

  • @fattasticvoyage
    @fattasticvoyage  13 років тому

    @Rawrkyliejo it is called a machine...as guns kill people...lol...the needle catches teh skin becuase it isnot retracting enough for how deep your trying to go...the volts jumping sound like a power supply issue,as i have never seen a power supply go up and down...sometimes how much is needed will fluctuate,but that can be just a cleaning the machine problem,and making sure everything is tight...best bet is to ride the tube,and use no neeld hang,and maybe little more contact gap,like a mm or so
