I had a few sketchbooks growing up and it terrified me to “waste” paper. For such a long time I was afraid to ruin it and it’s exactly as you said, I idolized the sketchbook that it had to be perfect all the time. I purchased an iPad last year and I felt more comfortable digital drawing because I wasn’t “wasting.” (I know, I’m dramatic. 😂) Sadly enough, all those years of not drawing and thinking that I would ruin a sketchbook has RUINED ME and my ability to practice because now my skills are so much better because I’ve practiced on the iPad. 🥺 Now, I’m currently thinking about finally using those sketchbooks and improving even more. 😭

Go for it! I've personally had an unrelenting fear of putting pen to paper for 15 years (since I finished highschool) because I always thought that I could never make anything as pretty as the drawings my twin sis could make (heavy dose of inferiority complex right there). Last year I picked up a random sketchbook and started drawing and after I got past the initial fear I was chugging out sketches like there was no tomorrow. Now I'm in a bit of an art block, but I'll come back to it once I get bored of the Sims 4 XD.

ive spent less on sketchbooks than the cost of one ipad, and i still agree with the statement somehow lol. thats why im into digital art. no wasted paint, in the practice phase. i also found a solution to sketchbooks, i just buy notebooks during back to school sale for ten cents each. literally ten books for one dollar. the transfer part is still a chore though, you cant take pics of notebook paper and have ppl think its good art.

The "sketchbook tour" videos on UA-cam make people feel like they should treat their sketchbooks as volumes of finished art pieces. But eff that. It's just paper for drawing practice. If you're gonna make a finished piece of art, why close it away in a book? Do it on loose paper and hang it on the wall.

UA-camr sketchbooks usually look unnaturally neat. I can't see the natural progression of a finished sketch or the sketches the artists make to just dump ideas on the page. I personally just dump ideas on the page and when it clicks, I dedicate an entire/the majority of the page for that and then highlight it, but until then there's a whole lot of scribbling, duds and generally making cylinders, spheres, cubes and pyramids until something comes to mind. And I do love me some shaded spheres *bliss* .

I was a Damocles' sword person until I invented a discipline for myself that I call 1 : 1 : X. Read as one to one to X. I assess the time I want to take in the studio and give equal, short pieces of time to both my sketchbook and a digital painting on my Surface tablet. -- these are the 1: 1. Sometimes it's 10 minutes. Wet painting gets the X -- the big amount of time. In other words, I parse out my available time, with a plan, and generally stick to it. This may sound stiff and mathy, but it has worked beautifully for me. Everything rises.

If you really want to, you can get a sketchbook that's as large as A3 or even A2 paper size. Unless you want to paint larger than life, A2 is a pretty large size. Although admittedly, a sketchbook in that size requires a (very) large bag if you intend to carry it around. And you can prepare pages to oil paint on, so the medium isn't a limitation either. At least, not really. I think the literal only downside is how it is harder to sell a page from a sketchbook, versus a painting on a canvas. And yes, most sketchbooks wouldn't handle odourless mineral spirits well of course, as it's not canvas but paper. And it requires a bit of a trick with wax paper to prevent pages from sticking together, aside from how paint needs to dry. I actually think there are less downsides to using a sketchbook than people think. I wouldn't say its usage is overrated. I think a lot of artists who are starting out underestimate how much it matters to draw and paint a lot, fail and learn from the mistakes. I don't mean drawing thousands of heads, each with the same mistake. I mean each new head improved based on the mistakes of the previous ones. There are also a bunch of artists, like Cesar Santos, who basically paint masterpieces in sketchbooks just because they can. However, it is easy to ignore how even most of his sketchbooks have a true learning purpose to them, like discovering and experimenting with colour palettes, painting styles by creating copies or works inspired by old masters for example. There are quite a few more notes in his sketchbooks than you might assume from the finished paintings. I would encourage painting in a sketchbook. I would not encourage treating it as a 'book of masterpieces' in which you're not allowed to fail and learn. It's also probably just commercially smart to think about what you would perhaps want to sell and therefore _not_ paint in a sketchbook, because at the end of the day it is still time and materials invested in painting something you could have done on a canvas.

If the sketchbook allows for mixed media or watercolours and has thicker paper you can prepare the paper using a layer of gesso. After that, you should be able to even use oil paint on it. Having said that, if you end up making a master piece, you might have wished it was done on a canvas. ;) I'm all for painting in sketchbooks. It definitely is something to experiment with.

You bring your sketchbook so if you see something neat you can sketch it. That's a lot easier than running around with an easel. If you happen to make a really pretty picture in it you can cut it out and that is fine; it's just the sketchbook

I used to use my sketchbook like a doodle book. I would even draw stupid funny comics for my friends with semi-stickman figures. But now I have the urge to only do fully finished and great artworks in my sketchbook. If they were bad, I would cut them out or tear the page away. I put the sketchbook on a pedal stool and thought of it too highly. When in actuality, people aren’t going to see those ‘ugly’ drawings anyways and have nothing to fear. And I realise I don’t experiment or rehearse much and just do a lot of practice, so thanks for reminding me of the limitations of a sketchbook, the incorrect mindset I have and the joy of art again :)

  • @MissCephalopod

A sketchbook is a workbook. It's where you think on the page, which is often v messy. It was never meant to be an artbook. In animation school, no one had an obsession with pretty sketchbooks because we all knew this, no one was precious about it at all.
It's simply a tool, like many others, with strengths and weaknesses. To say that you can't practice large scale oil portraits in a small sketchbook is like saying that a screwdriver won't help you hammer in a nail, and that therefore screwdrivers are overrated. No! It is simply a tool with certain qualities that can be more or less useful depending on your aims and methods, and while a sketchbook alone won't teach you everything about art, it's not "overrated", if you ask me.

I totally agree with your idea about using sketchbooks as a place to learn and explore rather than a finished art piece. I still think sketchbooks are very useful for that exploration, as they are relatively cheap compared to canvas. Alongside this, I think that being able to sit down and study something at a glance no matter where you are is incredibly useful. Interesting video and it's made me think twice about using other areas (digital or not) for practice

I made a breakthrough when I let go of loss aversion, stopped worrying about wasting paint and time and really started to paint for the joy of it. I wouldn’t say all those years tiptoeing and trying to be perfect we’re wasted though, it’s part of your artistic journey to obsess over your sketchbook and it’s a sign of growth to get over it

I used to use sketchbooks, but I always got frustrated, thinking I was "ruining" it when I drew something less than great. But of course in this age with so much technology at our fingertips I do things much differently.
I use my phone like a sketchbook now. I have a phone with a built in stylus and I have a drawing program. Boom! I can use whatever brushes I want, any size, anything I want. It's so much more convenient since it's always with me and I don't have to worry about losing it. If one sketch doesn't come out well, who cares? No one will see it anyway. I can have as much freedom as I want. It's a lot of fun. I do still like traditional art, but for sketches my phone is perfect.

Because power comes in all forms and any colour.
I often find myself. In the willows behind the land that led past the fence is where it hapoenned. Amoungst the limbs grass and grains that wondered the earth before me. Growth at every turn. We are all made of dust. Stars and galaxys that intwine became whag is. Our veins like the branches on the tree. Both alive all as one. Energy fills this mind as its gods head. Only to say that before us all stands a tree. And power is to know this. Action is wisdom turned outward. Become whag you will. Produce the words symptoms. As sound and wave functions perpetuate at equal measure. Throughout it all super postion is everywhere.
    Good luck.

My sketches look like shit so I always battle the notion that I need my sketchbook to be a work of art in itself

Like most things in life, it depends on the individual and how or why they are using it. Just have fun, make mistakes, try new techniques and most importantly: Use it!

I agree with much of what you're saying. But I had to stop listening because the background music gave me a headache. Just honest feedback. But great value in what you sai.

To me skechbook is the place where I draw CSI in any size and with any pressure to practise linework. I make value scales.
I shade and texture cubes and spheres and cilinders. Fucking up shading on sphere is less soulbreaking than fucking up the shading of an arm wich I have spent one hour to draw the skecth perfect.
I thing everybody who want to be good at drawing should practice the fundamentals daily.

Perfect sketchbooks aren't really sketchbooks.... (Why does this have to be said?) If everything you put in a book is fully rendered, it's not a fucking sketch. You've made a tiny art gallery that no one wants to pay for unless you print it and publish it for 10 bucks on Etsy. And even then no one wants to buy a printed sketchbook that's just finished artwork! It's a niche market where most people want to see your lines and pick your brain.

I personally feel its waste of time........using sketchbook daily..........as I have very very limited time with my regular job. so I always paint on canvas etc to get out some artwork....maybe thats wrong perception.....because i am always trying get out some artwork .......rather than just enjoying and practicing. exploring and experimentation is also equally important......but I am not doing it because of lack of time
