We all have these moments where drawing is super frustrating. We can't seem to draw what we have in our head. Turns out our brain is the culprit !
I'm a french manga artist who's also in last year of engineering school, I'm making videos to share my experience as a content creator and help others navigate their way through life as artists and make everyday as fulfilling as possible.

@@Something_Disgusting alot of ppl go through his. dont worry. i mean really think about it djamila knopf the artist had to learn from sycras tutorials and now shes amazing.
how are u doing now?
Drawing a simple character helps viewers relate to them.
That’s valuable information that they don’t teach you in art class!
That's why most of successfull animations channels (that are basically storytime channels) have those simple characters, they make you fill the empty character with your personal behavior, look, and attitude, wich generates more empaty towards the animator, wich equals to more followers

Why is drawing hard
Me: *_"Its because i have no imagination"_*
This is actually a known disability
Same
You could always just use reference
My imagination runs wild and is extremely vivid but drawing it on paper is a whole different story lol
For me I have the imagination but my brain Far away from connecting my imagination
Tips on how to become a better artist/animator etc:
1) Start small
2) Relax and don't overthink it
3) Take your time
4) Keep adding more details over time
5) Learn from your mistakes
6) Keep drawing new versions until you get your wanted result.
7) Stack up/layer your previous versions of your drawn character and watch it transform through animation. This will help you realize where you made mistakes.
8) Start over again new design that suits the character better.
Now some drawing tips:
(Always start with pencil)
1) Start by drawing a stick figure
2) Draw circles on the body of the stick figure- this will give your character muscles later.
3) Connect the circles with gaps around stick figures body.
4) Erase unwanted/unnecessary scribbles around the body of the figure.
5) Add more details to your character.
6) After you get your results right, use pen or marker to bold your character.
7) Practice.
Relax and take your time is the part i dont like
Exactly👌
I suck at poses a lot so normally they just stand there
Another tip is to draw everyday
1> Think of what to draw
2> Not know what to draw
3> Scribble on paper
4> Throw a tantrum
5> Draw something easy
6> complete it 5 days later
7> post it with the caption "I suck :(
1> Repeat
Day 300: *Rapid improvement*
"Holy shit I didn't even try"
Nah, math's is harder. That's why I was drawing in class.
Strangely enough, it still boils down to pattern recognition

I prefer to draw anime tho

Dammit
@Floyd Williams so true i changed to realistic too and now im waaay better in anime art
The same three songs? That's an exaggerated way to put it. How about only mastering one instrument. That's more accurate and that's sufficient for most. Studying anatomy would help improve your anime art but would be a grave waste of time for some art styles. Don't ever ignore the amount of time it will take to study the whole anatomy of just a human.
Honestly, this has been the video I’ve been looking for. I have friends who tell me to “add detail” to my work, and U struggle to explain why it can be too much for a character. This really helps both me and my friends better understand art as a whole.

Thanks man ! I've already recorded all of them but I'm having trouble finding time to edit the videos. I'm considering making them audio only °°
This is not why drawing is so hard. The problem is that we imagine things in 3d and while we have brain circuitry to convert 2d into 3d we can't do the opposite.
So when you draw a picture you try to draw it on 3d space but you hit flat paper instead.
Even experienced artists have significant problems in rendering 2d pictures and they need to use gradual approximation as they first draw crude design and then tweak it to perfection
You mean sketching? Drawing is hard because it takes a lot of effort, the beginning is rough and learning curve is steep af.
@@_____._..--_
sketching and drawing is the pretty same thing because all drawing starts with sketching which you gradually improve to look better and better until you are happy with the result.
Learning just makes that process quicker but it is not really required. as if you don't kind to spend days on one picture you probably can do it even if you never held a pencil in your hand.
deltaxcd eh, to me drawing is just laying down the graphite/ink with the picture in mind
@@_____._..--_
You mean you are some genius artist who can draw in one go without doing any corrections or using any reference sketch?

Well said
The best thing to do is in the first month, exactly copy references. Don’t trace, but remember the shapes. Push yourself to remember, but it will take a while. On the third month, try to develop your own way of drawing the faces, hair ect. On the fourth month, learn anatomy, find a favourite artists of yours, and study how they draw it, it will take a couple days each body part, and then figure out the rest I guess lol. I’m in 4 months of drawing and I’m not sure what to do next, but at the moment I’m just having fun.
Keep using references, then one day you'll find yourself doodling without the need for a one.
ZDeadfallout Xx exactly.
Drawing isn't hard for me. Having the confidence to do it is the real challenge.

Drawing sucks for me
I always watch these art tutorials and get mad when i realize im not a prodigy. I dont understand why, but when my art doesnt look as good as someone elses, or i see they are drawing something really good, i get upset. My friend at school drew this hyper realistic eyeball. It was so crazy and from my experience, she hadnt drawn much of anything prior. So seeing people like that just discourages me
I kinda relate to this I have a friend that I thought was better at me in every way possible and it frustrates me because when I tell him something or show an art he says the same thing just different and he makes it sound like he's more superior to me for example when I was 6 grade I learned to draw more realistic human bodies I showed one art of it he said "Cool I could do that but it probably would be more realistic." After a long time I understood that all those were lies cuz I saw him playing the game we both played and I showed him that I beat the game and he said "I beat the game a long time ago." but I saw him playing it still not done the game I started getting suspicious and eventually found out more of his lies now I dont talk to him much about basically anything.
I swear chronic pain + discouragement = One genuinely enraged, dark-horse type artist.
Think about it as a challenge for u and u have to win by practicing
We are the in same spot brother
Practice literally makes perfect. The more you draw, the more you can transfer the image in your head what's in your head onto the canvas more accurately.

Distractions are the enemy of your future, too much comfort is the silent destroyer of your commitment and willpower. Never give these any place when pursuing art
Drawing is easy:
1. Do it everyday (have a schedule)
2. Study artists who are better than you
3. Draw a topic you enjoy (example: if you like cartoons then draw cartoons, etc. What you need to study will derive from that)
Still nothing
not easy
When you feel like you are getting good at drawing.
Drawing gets even harder...
Exactly
@@Aadishri007 yeah :((
drawing is hard when you are trying to be perfect the first time around.

Great video, left me wanting to hear more. I feel you like you need a part 2 to this. You should expound more on creating those patterns.
This video was well Explained and it was clear enough that, I see why we are not good at drawing and why drawing is hard. Thank you for uploading is video.
I really like the way you say draw, it makes me happy
Fingers and legs, those are the main problems for me as an traditional artist
When I studied drawing the emphasis was on observation. Every lesson was in some way about rejecting your mental image of a subject. The most useful exercise we used to help break habits was blind drawing: you did not look at the paper at all and learned to link your pencil and eye motion. Then you threw away the crap drawing you ended up with. With time you learned to draw what you saw, not what you thought was there or should be there. Of course this is the opposite of drawing cartoons where you learn to perfect your mental images of subjects rather than purge them. Read "Drawing on the Left Side of the Brain" to see how anybody can train their eye and mind to observe more accurately.
Finding and learning new patterns. Finally someone says the things I understand and relate to the most!
love your content man, so valuable
You got a new subscriber- from a tiny animation channel. Love to see a video on animation.
drawing is only subjectively hard, come with your own approach and you can draw anything. it all takes abstraction and deep simplification of what you see

I’m just realizing I don’t pay attention to the looks of others
Holy shit
This makes Punpun one of the most iconic characters ever I guess. For some weird reasons.
Me: slowly makes a circle movement with my hands to make a perfect circle.
The circle in the end: 🥚
one of the things that makes drawing diffucult for me is the time it takes. i usually take an hour or so to draw one very simple character, but my friend can make a full comic on a sheet of paper in the same amount of time. the time it takes really makes me lose motivation to keep working on it
If u think about it, that friend of yours was probably in the same situation as you before but he kept practicing to reach the level of theirs. We all have different paces and instead of getting discouraged, just keep at it. A good practice is to compare yourself to your past self and not others. Keep drawing! You can do it~
the hardest part for me is thinking of something to draw
I just sat here thinking "pfff... drawing isn't that hard" and now I found out that unknowingly broke the way I learn things... okay, thanks?

This makes me feel happy and appreciated about my drawing skills 👍👍
This made drawing so much cooler than it already was...
I’m just happy that I can draw okay ^w^
I can face pretty well all of these concerns about drawing but... The hands? and also... the feet!. Oh man the hands are something really intimidating to me like i can't even think about drawing these things without crying
the backgrounds, the feet/legs, the hands, the other eye.., redrawing the body...oh god
Our brains are fucking trolls
This makes a lot of sense. Like when you're trying to draw something with a lot of shadows, you see those values in real life but your brain only focuses on the main pieces. To draw hyper-realism, you have to retrain your eyes and brain to pay attention to things you normally wouldn't
I agree with this, actually learning a pattern is very helpful, I really can't draw very detailed and very good body but using shapes as a way to represent muscle it helps me draw better
It's why the Loomis and Reilly methods were developed. To provide more sophisticated patterns to drawing the idealized human form. Walter Foster's method provides similar patterns for animals. More and more sophisticated perception, analysis and memorization produces better and better renderings.
thank you for this video, your content is really good
something i've learned over years of drawing is that the point of drawing is not to remember the exact way something is but to interpret it as something that other people might immediately see and notice the a more realistic look such as shadows, folds, proportion, and even basic anatomy. ur basically just creating an illusion
The patience needed to reach the next levels
Brah... your gonna make me start concentrating in health class now, NOOOOO
This is really helpful. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who does this a lot but when I picture something in my mind to draw and once I grab my tablet pen and tablet or a paper and pencil the image in my head just sorta fades off not giving me the result I want. I draw in a cartoonish style, but I sometimes draw realistically (rarely though). I’m gonna grab one of my sketch books and sketch out some parts of the body which isn’t my strongest when it comes to drawing like the legs and arms.
I suppose I can share some tips since im at uni now. Here's what you need to do to get better at drawing:
1. You need to be able to draw lines with certain boldness and confidence.Try stroking a line across an A3 paper and make it as decisive as possible.Do it quickly, no pause and do it over and over until the whole paper is filled.Do it vertically, horizontally and diagonally.
2. Another training you can do is to do no. 1 but with varied thickness. This relies on you manipulating how you presssure the pencil.Do it from thin-thick and vice versa.
Both of this training will give you more defined lines in drawing, instead of having fuzzy and blurry lines. Also confidence is important.
3. Tracing is fine, since you will unconsciously remember what you draw and improve your line quality and how flexible your hand moves.Dont get too caught up in this, you might end up just being an imposter.
4. Drawing from life is foundation.Try drawing simple things you have in your room.Instead of drawing what you THINK you see, draw what you ACTUALLY see.You really need to look thoroughly at the objects. Forget all of your previous conceptions of the reality, and try to see the world as if you just got here yesterday.
5.Learn figure (human) drawing from a realistic foundation, not by imitating cartoon example.Drawing from a deformed interpretation will only give you shallow conception of anatomy, and may result in a generic drawing.FYI I do have anime-ish drawing but I learned from sites like Proko etc.
6. When going outside ( commuting, vacation, etc. ) try observing your surroundings. What kind of eye someone has? What kind of clothing people wear? how light sources interact with the face? This will build up your visual library.
7. You need to be able to manipulate visual information in 3D form ( a.k.a seeing planes ).Try drawing in perspectives, and try sculpting human toe, hand, head.Try making it as accurate as possible, you can refer to yourself or others as live model. This will give you more sensibility of how forms really are.
*Also no rulers, unless you're doing some kind of portofolio or actual work that needs accuracy. This is part of the training as well.
This channel is helping me so much to get off my ass. Thanks man!
The HXH theme in the background though 🙌🙌
Then you got me, an artist with anphantasia. I just had to muscle memory a lot and look for key details to catalog as info since I can't "see" it. I also use lots of references.
I once knew a guy that had mad art skills and was a pure world thinker. He could not imagine not even an apple. And he could still draw without references (though he enjoyed copying more than drawing from scratch).
I see u have given it a big thought under the lamp and i appreciate ur efforts, I hope u become a well known manga artist as soon as possible. Ur passion is like fire keep it glowing. All the best 💙💙💙

To Improve your art is always the hardest but when you do the results will make you really proud of yourself 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
It was an awesome video 😍😍😍😍😍😍
When it comes to art I'm really good at writing. But when it comes to drawing, it's sketches of fantasy landscapes, reproductions of famous paintings in my own style, and paintings or sketches of scenes from movies/tv.
Meanwhile classmates still laughing at me for drawing a comic strip in stickman and still get near perfect score in exam.
If you like something from your heart it makes it easy.
Drawing has to be a passion not something you just do because you're bored. And drawing good means a lot of exercise. If you want to draw a human correct you have to know how to observe every detail you can't just copy a picture LOL
That got really helpful very fast
Another thing is the fact that you are trying to map 3 dimensions on 2, and that's pretty difficult to remember an object in every possible pose and angle, out of literally infinite.
The human brain has great power. The way to unleash it is through creativity and self consciousness. That's what I think. Good video
i just dont want the years i spent drawing to be nothing

I honestly couldn't pay attention to the video because of the Kid Icarus background music.

Drawing at a young age can really help in improving your art, especially when it comes to learning new techniques.
It's for this reason why so many famous artists are also known for painting and drawing at a fairly young age.

Wait wait, slow down! I was expecting an answer to why I suck at drawing ANYTHING, not an answer how pro artists can become even more pro!
Because in order to draw lifelike...you have to improve on your hand to eye coordination, and like everything it takes practice. You also have to learn to crawl before you learn to walk...and then learn to walk before you learn to run.
Also if you think drawing is hard...painting takes it up to 11.
Is not hand -eye coordination, is how you're able to imagine things. If you can't see things in your head properly, you can't draw them properly.
