- #shorts Why do I need a root canal?
An animated video of why a tooth may need a root canal and what the root canal procedure entails. A cavity can reach the nerve chamber of a tooth. Once it is inside the nerve space the bacteria from the cavity will kill the nerve inside of the tooth, it can then spread to the jawbone and cause an abscess. To treat this situation, your dentist or endodontist will perform a root canal on the tooth. They will drill into the nerve space of the tooth and remove all of the dead nerve tissue with endodontic files. Once the tooth is thoroughly clean inside, the root canal space will be filled with a material called gutta percha. Afterwards, your dentist will cover the tooth with a dental crown to protect it.
If you'd like to learn more about root canals, I highly recommend the book "Pathways of the Pulp". amzn.to/3Zgc2XL

I had to get this done on both of my back teeth actually, it hurts depending on how much good of equipment the dentist has. When I had mine done they had almost none, hurt like hell and had to get at least 25 shots in each side of the mouth. the pain you get from the cavity eating at your nerves is a lot worse tho, 100% glad I just got it over with. Oh and plus my dentist was an asshole and made it ALOT worse.

@@orctrihar what? The thin files?
the scariest part of this whole thing is the price of the crown.
No such thing as a poor dentist...
Whew no lie
I didn't buy a crown and I'm fine.
I guess I was lucky. My dentist drilled straight down. Cleaned it out and filled my tooth with silver like a filling. There was no crown needed. So I guess that as long as your cavity is not in the side of the tooth. And straight down from the top. You might not need a crown.
Yeah but their job is to stick they hands in your mouth. IN YOUR MOUTH.

Remember Dr......MAKE SURE THE DAMN NERVE IS DEAD!!🤬🤬🤬
Trust me on this one! The pain is something I can't describe and I'm a combat veteran!
I'm always amazed to hear how many dentists don't wait long enough for the anesthetic to take effect, and they don't check to make sure the tooth is numb before they start working on the tooth.
Damn that must have been a traumatic experince
Yeah, I had the same experience once... Thankfully, the subsequent root canals I've had were a MUCH BETTER experience. I didn't feel shit!! They were even easier than a cleaning, lolol
went through that too, had to sit through 2 hours of agony.
Just went to the dentist today for a bi-yearly cleaning and I have a tooth that is sensitive to cold water and pressure from my gun being recessed too far. Boy, I tell them every time to be careful and unfortunately they have to clean that tooth as well and it makes me jolt from the instant pain!
PSA, if youre removing the nerve and the patient begins screaming, double check to make sure the anesthesia is working instead of just continuing like your patient wont have massive trauma afterwards.
I second that. The dentist is now my least favorite place.

The pain of the rootcanal is nothing compared to the pain of the infection, just had a root canal a few weeks ago
Did getting your root canal done hurt? It's really not supposed to
I also had an abscess and much pain. I had my tooth extracted instead, though. Felt SO MUCH better afterwards! Tooth pain is no joke.
@@stephenbranley91 Yeah, when the tooth is abscessed it is extremely painful.
I have had a root canal surgery it wasn't painful at all. They did inject that region with anesthics that I could feel nothing there
It’s not painful at all when the anaesthesia actually works but if it isn’t numbed correctly, you’ll be in for a tough time.
To anyone scared. The numbing needles are the worst part. If you want to simulate that pain, give your self a quick pinch for not even a second.
The only time it hurts is if the needle RARELY punctures your nerve. I’ve only had this happen once out of 11 teeth and the pain only lasts for about 5 seconds instead of 1. You’ll be fine so go fix your teeth before you regret it.
The dentist gets paid and trained extensively to do these procedures so don’t give a thought about that
my dentist put a q tip with benzocaine on my gums before he gave me the injection. i didn’t even feel the needle. proof there’s so much that can be done to make you feel comfortable during this procedure, you just need a good, compassionate doctor.
it was my 2nd root canal to a different dentist and boy i was so wrong about my expectations.
the 1st one went smoothly (mostly just in injection at the beginning).
The 2nd root canal was like a glimpse of hell on earth. It touched the nerve more than 3 times (i lost count) and everytime the dentist touches me, i was holding my breath. I tried getting my mind off of the pain by thinking of prime numbers and I could never get past 7 or 11 each time.
No, the worst part is 45 minutes of drilling. And then they didn't get the whole root
I've had teeth removed, and the anaesthetic didn't work.
Luckily my dentist started the extraction, I said "ow" (wasn't too bad) he said: oh, that anaesthetic didn't work? Let's try again. (No pain after the second injection)
@@akeleven
During the initial treatment they thought I had 3 roots in each molar. A couple of weeks had to pass for them to have a slot to finish up the work at my regular dentist (or better said one of his colleagues specialised in root canals) they found out I had 4.

Just came back from getting my first root canal & seeing the comments of people whose dentists were careless about the pain is so scary. I didn't feel anything. The dentist injected the anaesthesia (didn't hurt at all even though I'm usually very scared of needles) & gave me almost 20 mins for it to kick in & started only when be was sure that I couldn't feel anything on that side.
I really do MY best to get people numb! Some doctors are just impatient or have poor technique, etc. We all get that one patient that really is a challenge, though, for a variety of reasons. Sorry to hear about your brother. Thank you for watching.
😢
I can’t even imagine having to wait that long. Man he’s a trooper.
What? Why would a 5 year old need a root canal? Why not just extract it if it’s a baby tooth
@nexul7261 pediatric dentists try not to pull back baby teeth unless they have too. If a posterior baby tooth is removed too early, it can affect the positions of the adult teeth later in life. It's common to do a pulpotomy (partial root canal) on baby teeth to help them stay in place. Front baby teeth can be extracted without affecting the adult teeth.
Teeth stuff always makes me uncomfortable. I just know I'm gonna have a nightmare of my teeth falling out tonight 🙃
I always seem to have that nightmare. Like my teeth are brittle and all break off. I have to take a moment each time I wake up to confirm that it’s not real.
There was a recent Reddit post talking about having nightmares in which you were losing teeth. Thank you very much for watching!
I’ve had a few dreams where my teeth fell out and let me tell you it’s worse than dreaming about creepy stuff
I've had a few stress dreams about my teeth. Waking up to check them since the feeling was way too real is never fun since I'm afraid I actually did something.
And that why I panik at the Idea to go to the dentist yet will definetly go because they clearly the best to take care of me if I diden't.
I had a root canal roughly 4 years ago. It honestly wasn't that bad aside from the part where they clean the roots. It just felt weird, but my dentist also didn't botch the local anesthetic part.
I really loved having root canal. It was such a surprise to go to dentist and not only avoid any pain, but also get rid of the pain I came in with. Feeling when he is "clearing" the insides of tooth was actually good
Reminder: if you’re a natural redhead, you might need extra anaesthesia. Get your dentist to check for any feeling in the numbed area before actually starting. Don’t be afraid to tell them if you feel ANYTHING, and do not agree to start the procedure until you’re confident that you’re fully numb.
In dental school I was taught to watch out for people of Irish decent since they may need more anesthetic.
As a natural redhead who was had a root canal problem I can relate, my dentist had to inject my tooth twice to actually make my tooth numb, since the first time she was cleaning it, it felt like excruciating hell, believe me when I say, It was a pain I won't want upon even my worst enemy but hey, that was last year, at least now It's better.
Remember everyone: Wash your teeth, if you don't wanna live in excruciating pain for a while~
Huh do red beards count?
Because one side of my jaw takes way way more to numb it and even then sometimes I can still feel somewhat.
@@Cody_Ramer I’m not an expert so I don’t know, but it’s definitely something you should look into. Could be a factor!
Am I an exception tho… i am raven haired but I do have a very weak tolerance of pain… one time we go to the dentist, my mom’s in there with me thank God. The dentist said “it’s time the anaesthesia must have kick in by now” so i just followed and when she try to pull the teeth out. I feel an awful immense of pain, my eyes went completely white and my mom intervene there, telling the dentist to stop. The thing was my mouth felt numb indeed but idk why when the teeth get pulled out it’s like there’s no anaethesia effect at all. I’ve been scared to go to the dentist ever since. I’ve got 1 remaining impacted teeth now. But I still traumatize by that. I don’t have the courage going through it if I’m not fully down with general anaesthesia. But the dentist always told me it’s not necessary. Despite me telling what I’ve gone through previously… idk whether it’s me or that one dentist just didn’t make sure of that the effect already kick in or not
As someone who has lost many teeth and LOADS of money on root canal extractions;
This isn't even the most difficult part.
The actual thing that hurts the most is the extreme pain you're feeling on your decaying tooth area....
I had migraines and lots of blood and other liquids clogging my throat, just because of one damaged tooth and no painkiller would work until I fixed my issue.

I recently completed two root canal procedures, and while there is minimal discomfort, it is manageable.
Root canals used to be notorious for being very painful but nowadays they take about 35 to 45 mins and are basically pain free. A little pinch for the numbing medication and thats it.
Not true, you will feel excruciating pain - local numbing doesn't cut it for that type of invasion of the tooth, some people need much stronger sedation though, some people do not respond well to local anaesthesia
Nope, it all depends on the tooth. Generally a normal root canal you shouldn't feel much. But if you have Red Root, which is an infection in the root novacaine doesn't hold as it should, and you end up feeling EVERYTHING. There's numbing gel that gets smeared on your gum available, so you don't even feel the needle nowadays, thank God!😬
Infected tooth?
Good to know my chipped tooth isn’t infected. I’d be in massive pain for years by now 😅
I had a root canal before, and the infection was the worst pain I’ve ever been in. I felt the same exact way 😭 my dentist turned me away the first time I came in for the pain and when I came back they finally x-rayed and saw it
@@caitlynames2652 dang! I do my best to alleviate patients’ pain the same day, whether I pull it, start the root canal by just removing the nerve and finishing the root canal another day, or draining an abscess, or at least get them on antibiotics/pain meds for a few days if I don’t have time! I recently had a grown man in the chair almost crying with pain, he wouldn’t even let my assistant take an X-ray, so I numbed him first, then X-ray, then pulled a couple teeth. He was so grateful.
Just had one yesterday. Protect your teeth guys!
Man toothaches are no joke, But my dentist was awesome. My first time having a root canal and I was terrified, but I felt no pain thanks to having a Dentist who knows what they're doing.
I've had a root canal, it ain't no joke. I was in horrible pain until I had the procedure. I've broken my leg, arm, and got shot in the hand as well, but this was the most pain I've ever experienced in my 48 years of life! Takw care of your teeth.
Fluorinated drinking water is one of the greatest things mankind has ever invented.
My tooth broke and I needed a root canal. Six months of constant pain later, and I got one. No pain since.
Now, I want to know what hurts more childbirth or Toothaches.
@@Shaun_Jones 💀 no it's not, just brush your teeth after eating
Bro, wtf? That's so bad for you. There are literally dozens of empirical tests that show that directly consuming flouride is severely bad for your physical health. Brush your teeth.@@Shaun_Jones
Make sure you go to dentist twice a year so you can avoid this. also fluoride remineralizes your teeth to fill in small cavities . You will be fine if you brush twice a day.
Fluoride is a neuro toxin. Shouldn’t be in your body for any reason…
howl ong should u brush
@Patricio Duda going on 12 years here too...fuck
I'm in my 30s and have never been to a dentist, ever. Zero problems, so far thankfully.
Fluoride also decreases testosterone. No thanks.
I went in for a root canal and the dentist ended up stealing my kidney.
POV: You fell asleep first at the sleepover
I had to go to a dentist this year for the first time in 18 years 😂 never had a problem with my teeth, so I go and complain about a tooth ache and blood coming from that one tooth, had the anaesthetic to numb it and the dentist literally “flicked” the tooth out 😂😂 turns out I still have 4 baby teeth 😂 I’m 34 😂
Life basically gave you 4 extra lives lol

@@bruh......2005 my husband still has his very 1st 2 baby teeth. Bottom jaw front and center. And I have a friend who’s got the same thing and in the same place.
I've had one of these procedures before... The amount of pain that someone goes through before the procedure is unfathomable. After the procedure, you feel sensitive for a year. But it feels so much better!
It varies highly. I've had 3 root canals and only one of them involved any sort of pain. And the teeth have been totally problem free afterwards. They do tend to break easier than healthy teeth though. I've had 2 of them crack while biting something hard... Although one was assisted probably by a fist in the face.
I agree. You're better off going under than experiencing this sober.
YEAR WHAT
@@chewymustard6426 Just to clarify, I was sensitive to hot and cold temperature's for about a year. After the procedure, you will realize the pain is no longer there. However, you will still be sensitive for sometime... This goes too for sweets and anything that can get stuck in between your fixed tooth. Disclaimer: Everyone is different, chemistry for you is different from me. My doctor told me that sensitivity can last from 6 months to a year. It all depends on how fast you recover. I feel absolutely amazing after the procedure and if you require one, note that the pain will go away.
@@nocturnalrecluse1216 I was awake for my entire procedure, it did require two uncomfortable pokes from the anesthetic.

Root Canals are not that bad. What's bad is the infection. I have torn ligaments, passed kidney stones, and broken bones. Nothing compares to inflammation in the tooth.
You’ve been through a hella lot of pain🥺, I can only say a C-section is nothing compared to a toothache 😩
I know you lying!! Ain’t nothing worse than kidney stones!! I’ve had a couple of root canals and pain was bad but kidney stone bad???
You ain't had no kidney stone
My favorite part was the abscesses magically disappearing.

years ago i had a root canal & the dentist hit the drill on my nerve. worst pain i’ve ever experienced in my entire life. that dentist botched 2 of my teeth that probably didn’t even need root canals to begin with & both failed. i got a root canal retreatment the other day & was terrified he was gonna hit the nerve. i felt absolutely nothing and the procedure only took about 15 minutes while the other dentist took 2 hours. always go to endodontics (root canal specialists) never get a root canal done by a general dentist
I had that thing and it hurts so bad until your nerves are gone.
I remember finally I was able to afford a crown surgery, the whole room stank so bad because of the rotting insides of the teeth.
Oh man 🫣
root canal? i want to get mine pulled cause its not on top its a hole in the side of my molar at and below the gumline. it doesnt hurt tho unless im cleaning the nerve part on the inside
@@completelytransparent6320 I can't afford to even go see the dentist just went through major flood 6 months ago and before that I was only just getting on my feet after other issues in y life my two rear top molars are basically gone.. while they were rotting it was the worst pain I've ever felt and I couldn't clean them myself properly so I just cracked the right one in half on purpose so I could clean the dead tooth out. Now the roots of the teeth are still in my jaw on right side and only half of the root on the left side is in there as I pulled it out in the shower... Looked like I cut myself badly the amount of blood rushing out of my face... The rest of my teeth are perfect I believe. Not sure how they even died tbh I always brush my teeth twice a day and floss after I eat almost religiously.. For anyone getting a root canal.. I can guarantee you that this is NOT a painful procedure. It may look terrifying, but if you are in the position where you need a root canal you will be happy for the promise of relief it will bring.
I had a root canal of the first tooth behind the upper canine. The nerve was practically dead so the dentist could actually perform a great bit of the root canal in a "first step" process without any anesthetic. He just told me to say whenever I could actually feel something. I felt nothing. Not a damn thing. Only when he was actually through the root could I feel anything.. and that was more like someone itching a spot that had been dying for a scratch. It was a GOOD feeling, but I let him know and because of that we stopped the treatment there. Two weeks later I returned for the full treatment, with the anesthetics and all the finishing touches - except there was no crown. The tooth is still the same tooth fully, with the exception of where he drilled.
Again, if you need a root canal the pain you are currently experiencing is million times more painful than the treatment itself. Even if it's not painful, but more an annoyance. The treatment feels like.. honestly nothing. Maybe the teeth further back might be a bit more resistant to anesthetics, but the dentist has more than enough to make you not even feel being clobbered by Mike Tyson. A root canal is nothing for that anesthetic.
Unfortunately the same lack of pain cannot be said for your wallet. It is an expensive procedure.. especially if you have more roots that need treatment.
Yep, I did two of them with anesthetic and boy it was pretty expensive
Yah this video looks terrifying but it is actually not painful at all
I’ve made two without any pain and I’ve never heard of anyone getting a crown after a root canal.

That's very interesting. Never knew the whole process of a root canal and the cause leading to this procedure. So far knock on wood, I have not needed a root canal yet, even though my teeth used to be riddled with cavities, despite all the care I did.
