Rhythm- Thaalam as they say in Kerala- guides our lives.
From the steady rhythm of the heart pulsing life-giving blood, to the breathing in and out of oxygen necessary for survival to the simple left-right-left-right marching pace as you walk along your path, rhythm governs each second that ticks away.
It is no wonder that rhythm has been proven to affect the human body in a variety of physiological, psychological, and emotional ways from infancy to adulthood. And it is no wonder that acclaimed filmmaker Bharat Bala has chosen to lens his message about the idea of India in his ambitious 1000 film project to showcase the idea of India.
Taalam is the first of the 1000 brilliant films Bala is set to gift India and the rest of the world.It released on UA-cam today.It is meant to be a Virtual museum for India and its home on UA-cam.
How Bala takes these fundamental facts of life and connects it to Kerala's Snake boat races [or Vallamkali in Malayalam] which is among the largest mass sporting events worldwide is what Thaalam is with a deep and timely message for all of India on harmony and oneness.

While a lot of what AR Rahman says was true - no one is a professional athlete - this is no longer true. In 2017, UBC Kainakary hired a set of army recruits and won the trophy. None of them were rowers and this was the first time a team of professionals won. As is with most sports - the snake boat race is also going from a amateur pursuit to a professional one. Now with the kind of sponsorship money available, the teams are going to look to professionals, shipped from the best part of the world to be a part of their team alienating the amateurs. Local people relate to teams because their family and friends row for a certain team but if all the members are professionals from all around the globe it will alienate the sport from the locals. The next 2-3 years are crucial for this sport. There is always the ethical argument - is it fair to keep the sport amateur and the sportsman poor or bring in the money and give them a better livelyhood but the risk is the sport might not need them (amateurs) but rather professionals. Don't be surprised if we see an IPL like boat race in 2025 and all the boats are infused with light weight carbon composites instead of the traditional boats. Hope this video brings more attention and make people realise the existential crisis threatening the sport.
Great point! While better organisation and better pay would help the pursuit, the Vallamkali should be provided a "heritage" rank and preserved as is.

The reality is different. This hindu festival is being ruined by muslims and christians.This boat race is held in honour of hindu deities, and chants and mantras praising those deities were sung, and the temples in the region were involved. Oflate christians and muslims too have joined and now they want the boat race to be held as per traditions and chants in the church and mosque. 'Yeshuve mathave', being mentioned in this video, ia christian chant, and was intrduced bu few converts only some years ago. This boat race is centuries old, and is a hindu tradition. Now christians with 'Yesu ( Christ0 chants, and muslims with Bolo takbir are in it , and they say boats mus assemble before mosques and churchaes, and not temples. They are hijacking hindu traditions and festivals. Just google it and see.

I like this film because it shows us the importance and power of unity and rhythm. It is not possible for a single person to operate the snake boats.We see how around 150 rowers come together and train not only in strength but also in rhythm.This shows us it doesn't matter how strong the rowers are but it matters if they can work together in unity.They need to row at the same time if even 1 person messes up the rhythm the boat can lose speed.India can be compared to this boat and us citizens the rowers we need to find our rhythm,put aside our differences and work together in order to move forward with great speed.
