We’re honoured to have played host to one of the foremost intellectuals of our nation, Professor Pratap Bhanu Mehta, when he joined us at The Quorum in Gurgaon for a revealing conversation about the state of democracy, freedom of expression, and secularism in India, with journalist & author, Rajdeep Sardesai.
We are privileged to be sharing with the world, the ideas, opinions, and thoughts that were discussed and uncovered with The Q Community. Each one looking after the other's interests; with watchdog of democracy & constitution (Judiciary) turned into a silent spectator.
Prof Mehta is spot on. Democracy as a platform, for the masses, works till the electorate is evolved in their thinking. As it stands, the Hindutva movement, is propelled by hypothetical paranoia, concocted by the politicians. How does Hindu majority get threatened by minority Sikhs, Muslims and Christians. Hindu dharam khatrey mein hai, is something that the silent majority will need to own and solve, otherwise India's experiment with democracy is bound to fail.
What I have noticed is that the politicians will not think twice about leveraging them vs us. Sikhs were labeled terrorists and separatists during the 80s by then Congress party. And now we see BJP doing the same, during the Farmer Aandolan. What Sikhs and other minorities will need to learn is that RSS/BJP is not a friend. They are communal and divisive for their own good. And a Hindu nation is not secular and you might as well change the tirranga into a saffron flag with trishul.

People like Bhanu Mehta are our conscience keepers. Younsters of today should realise that your duty as a good citizen of a proud democracy does not end with your vote. You need to keep yourself informed and put tough questions to those who you have elected. Addiction to cheap 4g data is making you spend all your time on social media and games. If you are not interested in the state of the economy, unemployment etc why would the government be? They will worry when their voters agitate. Please awake and put the government on notice by peaceful civilised debate. You can change the mode of debate if you absolutely refuse violence, unruly shouting etc. Set the terms of the debate. Don't get diverted. Go after your agenda. It does not matter which government is in power. All political parties follow a golden rule. Only crying babies get milk. So for youth issues like unemployment, right to dissent or what we wear, eat or love cry and cry aloud for your milk.

The point that Prof. Pradap made was this very point of individuals recling to the point of their own conforts( the case he made of the elites). A Council based System
A Council based System can Deepen our Democracy. Like the GST Council, every State and Union Territory can join the Council Function/Verticals/Department, say for example Tribal Welfare, Tourism, Agriculture, Education, Healthcare, Law and Order etc...etc... and they each in turn manage the show for the entire Nation. Elected Representatives from Kashmir to Kerala, Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh work together than the present Command and Control Structure. Central Government to oversee only Defense, External Affairs, Intelligence, National Security, Space, Monetary Policy, Macro Economic Balancing though there are autonomous agencies like RBI, Finance Commission etc... etc... too. So no monopoly for any Political Party Nationally or Regionally. Councils make sure Business Continuity. Members of the Councils not necessarily be a Minister, can be an MLA from the State ruling Coalition or even from the Opposition Parties, depending. Smaller the Parties the better. How Local a Party can be is the Key. Such that, no High Command, Citizens can easily access their Representatives being the HQ of the Party is Local. Even if the Party is able to get only one MP elected or one MLA elected, also fine. No Monopoly. Unity and National Integration is automatic with this arrangement. No Center vs State Tussle here. The Responsibilities are clearly defined. Trash what is in the Concurrent List to avoid further Confusion. Demarcate etc...
"No One Nation One Election and One Party ?☺️" thing here to free the Representatives, as they are free because of the Councils making sure Business Continuity along-with Bureaucrats. As far as possible, State/UTs Elections to be spread as much as possible (29 States+7 UTs ?) such that, This can become 29+7+1 37 Engine instead of Double Engine offered, few Members from the Councils retire every 2 or 3 Months representing a State or UT and Fresh Blood get inducted. No need to settle for the Common Minimum Program of the erstwhile Hotch Potch Coalitions so far experienced, rather Maximum Programs, Limitless Programs. So diversified will become the Councils that, lot of ideas can pour, which can be Mainstreamed after Discussions and Consensus/Voting. The entire Resources can be put to use for Roti, Kapada, Makan Issues of the Citizens (Welfare). Only Welfare issues to be addressed. Two things along this should be to have Transparent Funding of Political Parties and Transparent Reporting of Expenses by each Councils/Ministries, of-course in the Public Domain. In the form of Dashboards at transformingindia.mygov.in/performance-dashboard and Granular Data at data.gov.in/ for the Research Students and Academicians to analyze and report further to educate the Citizens. Also UCC to escape from Pseudo Secularism.

Great conversation. Just a quick point about government controlling small scale decisions at local level has been the holy grail of any government. All governments want to operate like China without being labeled as such where every citizen is micro managed by the state. So that is not a marginal thing that happened in the past, it was the main intent but governments lacked digital tools to do so.
I have no qualm as long as. India develop and poverty is eradicated 70years and we are still lagging in most so up economic parameter. Even if India be one a semi authoritarian state I. Believe we Indians will get disciplined
and will be given a sense of direction.

I'd never understand why people start comparing India to the US at the drop of a hat. These two countries couldn't have been more different in terms of federal structure, judicial structure, human development, per capita income, gender parity, education, life expectancy - all the important aspects. If something could happen in the US it also could happen in India - sure, may be in 90 years.

Rajdeep raises pertinent questions that Mr. Bhanu does not answer very well!
The farmers were not called khalistanis
India created as a country in 1947 but Indian civilization is centuries old, but Pratap (for most of the liberal intellectuals) arguing Indian history doesn't matter but should follow the constitution, in which a word called “Secular” mentioned.
1. Counter argument to Pratap from the right is, India always secular in history before the 70s (when the secular word is incorporated) and that word was incorporated when the entire opposition was in jail- what is the counter-argument to that. I spoke to right, left, center people, right and the center feels that these intellectuals are insulting Hindus by telling, they don’t have the wisdom to choose Congress, which is the icon for secularism (in the view of intellectuals). People opinion is entirely different on congress at the ground level.
2. Rahul Gandhi always says, BJP is a Hindu fascist party, he is giving the impression that BJP is always working for benefit of only Hindus. He should stop calling BJP a Hindu party otherwise he is pushing general people to BJP (I believe, he did already)
3. Hindus strongly believe that Congress is a Muslim appeasement party - questions from right is, Congress associated with MIM in the past and they associated with Muslim religious parties in Kerala, WB, and Assam in 2021 elections. How come Congress can not be called a Muslim fascist party even their prim minister told openly that, minorities will have first right on national resources? These are visible on the ground so need to advise congress to be neutral and build a counter-argument.
My point here is, if you do not criticize congress enough for their wrongdoings, there is no credibility for your criticism of BJP.
If this video is translated to Hindi and played for the general public, I am very sure that most of the Hindu viewers will start voting for BJP.
I also strongly want an open & equal society but that is not possible until a strong political force emerges to fight with BJP because Congress is the worst in all parameters when compare with BJP.

Whether we like it or not, in democracy, majority opinion matters so instead of blaming people to have that opinion, the opposition needs to build the counter-argument. In my view, it will take a minimum of another 10 years for that.
