I appreciate the specific information. So many expert videos out here seem like they are made by people who been skating so long they forgot what it’s like being a beginner. We beginners need suggestions with names, model numbers, images, websites, etc., and especially comments like, “buy this one.” Thank you!
OMG the difference wheels and bearings make. I bought the Chicago skates and was trying to figure out why I couldn't get enough speed to do much. But when I changed out the wheels and bearings 😳 a WHOLE NEW WORLD!!! Thank you so much for this video!! You just changed my whole skating experience!!!
I am a Riedell Woman thru and thru. I have been skating in my Riedell 121 boot since 1986! They no longer make that particular boot...but it is VERY well made and I can probably get 33 more years out of them. DEFINITELY GET THE RIEDELL SKATES!!!!
I basically bought everything you recommended. Riedel Angel skates, reds bearings and team rollerbones wheels and the difference between those and the suregrip rental skates the rink has is HUGE! I skated as a kid and recently my daughter was invited to bday skate party so I took her out a few weeks before to teach her how to skate and I’m hooked again lol, now with the new skates I’m at the rink everyday there is an open skate! Bought my son(12) matching set up too! My daughter(7) has the roller derby brand adjustable skates since her feet keep growing but I have a set of rollerbones wheels and reds bearings ready and waiting once she’s ready for the speed!! Had to comment to give thanks for the help this video gave to me and the kiddos!
I feel like we are living in parallel universes, LOL. My story is quite similar. Just got back into it late last year and somehow have three pairs of roller skates now. Not to mention I'm totally obsessed with mastering my skills. It feels so fun to have a hobby again
Can I ask, did the wheels feel "too slick" that is my only concern with going with 101 out the gate. Not sure what rental hardness usually is though....
@@KS-op5hb 101 is slippery very hard wheels many pey like that as they like to slide around and do tricks but for a beginner I'd go for 97a or 98a not over 100 til you are very balanced skating.
No, No, NO! To Chicago skates, they are very narrow and I have a narrow feet 😳 I just ordered a pair of Sure Grip skates and they’re very comfortable . Going to the rink tonight to try them out , I’m so excited! 😆
@@isaacluna6633 The Moxi Jungle skates are amazing! They are very comfortable and I had NO blisters even wearing very thin socks. I did have to switch the outdoor wheels they came with for indoor wheels. I bought Rollerbones 101a's which are great.
Wow. So right! I'm 50 and I bought a pair of Angels for my wife, then I got a pair for myself. The wheels and bearings that come with them-not so good. I got the Rollerbones 57s with the Reds bearings. Unbelievable! Everything is SO much easier to do. Where were these when I was in 8th grade??? Thank you for the education!
I went through pairs of skates and then found a Dominion pair,with a forged aluminum plate.The Chicagos i had,i busted them wide open,so i know i needed leather.Basically,if you skate with a lot of torque,axels/waltz jumps,you might need a stiffer boot.If you're smooth,cool,and just roll a lot,you can rock a softer boot,yet even then,it has to be comfortable to you in the long run.My next one was a SureGrip Classic plate and Riedell boot,and that plate was bulletproof,then onto the Snyder Deluxe/Silver Star boot,the same boot a buddy Mike Johnson was using.He switched to a RollLine plate later,Now I roll with the Edea Fly and Giotto plates with Bones 101 wheels.Now that i have a boot that has a great fit inside,i dont have to tie my laces tight...Sometimes if you can,go check out skates already out together,or at least wear the boot around the store..
I’m a beginner also but skate inside downstairs. I have SureGrip Boardwalk skates and recently got a pair of Fame. They are cushier inside but get hot and sweaty.
I got these and they aren't bad at all, you can feel the rigidness of the Vinyl, that being said the Leather version is a Jump in price. So after buying a set of outdoor wheels as well to practice when I can't go to the rink, I think they are fine in the price range. They were 10 times better than the rental skates.
Awesome, thanks Skatelyfe, for the tutorial, it’s especially great for us newbys. I haven’t been on skates in over 35 yrs, since the early 80’s. Even back then I was a wall hugger, so I’m m definitely ordering me a new pair of new skates you recommended $129.00 . I went skating (well wall hugging) last weekend, The skating rink we have here have concrete floor, it’s kinda uneven, but oh well, it’s better than nothing. I’m in it mainly for the exercise, Thanks for sharing the videos.
It's been 20 yrs...I purchased the riedell juice skates and changed the wheels to 57mm radar varsity plus 101a. Something I can grow into and not outgrow I'm in my fifties lol. Bout to get my roll back.
I happen to still and found your skating video! Skate king is where I skated for over 30 yrs and I miss skating so much!! I would love to open one where I'm at right now ,because there's no entertainment at all !; Thanks for the video !! Be Blessed!!! 😇New subbie😄
Rasheed Muhammad get ricta clouds. Faster for concrete. They are made for skate boarding but “long board” clouds skate like butter. And bones reds like he posted or Bronson speed co bearings are badass and slick my guy.
Listen I skated back in the 70 and 80s and skated professionally and I will tell you this. The type of skates, barrings, wheels, boots, toe stops all play a role in your ability to skate. For example, when I first started skating I had a cheap pair of skates. My legs, feet and everything hurt all the time. When I got a good pair of skates I was able to skate longer, faster with less effort. Even the the rubber bumper in the truck matters, how well it supports you in turns, if your trucks are adjusted correctly, if you have good fast barrings. So to say the skate do not matter that is soooo untrue. They make a great deal of difference. There are even skates that are not have the right size plate or not centered on the boot correctly. Even the strenth of the boot makes a differance.
yes it s from far ..more difficult than ice skates.... and doesn 5 matter how expensive are the skates, if it doesn t fits for you...it s like this.... when l was a child, l had some very cheap, but with metal bearings and real rubber on it , not silicone......well l was flying in all direction, it s about how stable it s your foot position in any skate figures....
I have Redell wave but will invest in some indoor wheels.We have a few rinks wood rinks here in New York and one in Jersey. We also have a few outdoor rinks .
This review mentions the Chicago skates. I bought the Chicago 405 which is a lower version. He recommends the higher version which is the 805. I don't know if the 805 is better. On my third day, approximately 1 to 2hrs use each day, the wheel bearings on the right foot front right wheel failed and dislodged. Sent me crashing to the floor and causing a pileup of skaters. Bodily injury to me and other skaters from both impact with floor and each other. Close examination of the axle and wheel indicates catastrophic failure of the wheel bearings. The left foot front left wheel bearings also failed, exhibiting the same defect and 1/8" of wobble, and posed an imminent risk of dislodging (had the other not failed first). The other 6 wheels also show signs of material failure and exhibit 1/8" of wobble after a few hours of normal use by a normal sized man. Yes I am big, but still less than the recommended weight for my size...that's why I ordered size 11. The manufacturer should anticipate user weight to increase with foot size. Read other reviews. I am not the first. Manufacturers should design products for a factor of safety of 2 to 5; considering that all eight wheels/bearing sets are showing damage and or failure after a few hours of normal use I would say this is not a coincidence. These skates are ideal for beginner to advanced skaters looking to get injured or simply want to pretend to skate but never try. All others should consider buying something else. See my photos. P.S. I am a structural engineer, often hired to do failure analysis reports... this product can not possibly be designed properly for its intended user. Amazon delivered promptly and the package was not damaged. Amazon accepted my return including free shipping. As of time of posting review - no compensation for bodily injury from Amazon or manufacture. I emailed the manufacturer, NSG, but received no reply, as of the time of posting this review. But, hey... I am just one customer. You should read reviews. My post is based only on my experience. Others may have different experiences; 2.2 Million people enjoyed their Ford Pinto and only 27 to 180 deaths as a result of the manufacturer's defect. Choose wisely. Good luck.
I really like VNLA ! I have the Luna Fame indoors and the ate a wonderful beginner skate !!! Good support but also not overly stiff ! Sure grip fames are also a great investment if you are a serious beginner skater !!
Great information but which do you recommend for outdoors. I skate horribly in the rink, I don't get there much but plan to skate in my neighborhood COVID-19 😬. Also, any suggestions on protective gear, I KNOW I will fall a few times, I have enough cushion but not on the knees and elbows 🤣😂🤣😂😬 thanks so much for your help
Riedell angel has been recommended to me as well what bearings and weeks should I switch them to if so ? I heard the wheels not as good on rudely angel skates what bearings and wheels matter beside outside Vs indoors wheels being different. Does changing the bearings and wheels make it easier to skate ?
I'm a huge fan of the Sure Grip fame. I swapped the indoor wheels for Radar Energy 62s (either 78A or 82/84A, I can't remember which). I even use the outdoor wheels at the rink I go to bc that floor had me shook with the indoor wheels. Very informative video!
I just bought chicago boots without watching reviews and planning to change out the wheels for better performance. Would that be advisable? Can’t afford the more expensive ones at the moment.
If you're looking to change the wheels on Chicago skates, you need to purchase new bearings as well since the bearings that come with Chicago wheels are NON-REMOVABLE. Additionally, I highly recommend getting new toe stops as well since the toe stops that come with Chicago skates are hot trash. This all coming from personal experience.
Cant get my hands on any decent roller skates or at least the ones that I want which are the impalas so are the Chicago’s 800 good? I’m a beginner btw. Thanks for the vid bro!
hi I needed up getting em. They were good for 3 days but when I S started to get comfortable at skating and balancing, I could tell they were shit cause I started to lose my balance and the wheels were all wobbly lol
Chad. Much love and respect for what you do to the scene. I am a beginner. Went with your recommendation with Riedells but opted for adjustable toe-stops. So question: Should I start out with toe-stops (adjusted all the way in) or jam plugs?
Do you have any recommendations for wheels I can use indoors at the rink but also practice on a tennis/basketball court with? I have the Riedell rhythm boost roller skates. I’m not exactly new to skating but new to this style of skating so I’m going from speed skates to these and the wheels that come with them aren’t good.
You should have two sets of wheels if you plan to skate outdoors and indoors and here is why. Skate wheels are made of different materials for different aspects. For example, a indoor skate wheel has a hardness to it, like All American wheels and bones both make a indoor wheel and a outdoor wheel. The indoor wheels are hard and the texture which they are made out of allows you to glide across the wood and yet have a grip. While the outdoor wheel mostly are a softer material which allows it not to tirer your legs and roll over the rough serfice easier and if you hit a pebble with a hard indoor wheel it tends to throw you because it wedges in between the ground and the wheel where a outdoor wheel will have cusion and go over it without stopping your wheel in its tracks. Plus using your indoor wheel out doors damages the wheel and puts pits in the wheels serfice. now depending on your skate style you might like the feel of a outdoor wheel indoors or vice verse. But trust me your better off with a set for outdoors and a set for indoors. Do not use your out doors indoors as it doesn't allow you to learn moves like a hockey stop indoors because you need to slide a little to do a hockey stop. I bought a pair of nice used skates of duglas snyders which I will create some videos on my page about how to fix up a good used pair of skates. Follow me and I will start a series of new videos which I will include a DIY projects
Just letting you know this information is still being used in 2023. My local black owned shop recommends Riedell too. So....that's what I'm going with.
Hey so I have a couple questions. What's the difference between Rhythm and Artistic Skates and what do you suggest? I can skate pretty good I can do cross overs, skate backwards a little, and that's about it I do wanna start doing more tricks though. Also I see some are vinyl and some are leather does that also make a huge difference especially if I'm a big skater? (250+)
Rhythm skating is more of what you get at roller skating rinks. They do tricks, partner and dance skating to the beat of the music. Artistic skating is about form as they compete in competition's and have leagues. They are like ice skaters on 8s. They are even trying to get it into the Olympic games.
Hey Chad, thanks for the video definitely helps me out to choose the right skates for me as a beginner. This is noob question, I notice a lot of rhythm skater who wears a boot not the low cut skates, tend not to tie it up all way. Is there reason why they do that?
YO, how can you recommend anything when you still CAN'T SKATE??!!! 😂. I'm joking. I'm glad to run across 1 of your videos. Keep up the amazing work... I'm sure you forgotten me but I'm still THE COLDEST BENCH SKATER!!!
Yo what's the best precision wheels for skates . Are we still doing rubber or? Let me know,I want to get me some wheels. I use to skate back in the 70s on I believe precision or rubber wheels. help me out please
its the wheels that are really what you are looking for! other youtube channels have breakdowns for boots and it really comes down to how much ankle support you want. Wheels are interchangeable for skates - so u can get indoor, outdoor, hybrid, speed and wooden wheels.
I'm currently looking for a plate but am going all the way (not caring about price). That aside, Look for a plate with a higher kingpin angle °. Higher angles are worse for going fast in but apparently articulate your turning and pivoting movements better. I don't have the experience to recommend one over another so here's where I started. Get the basics and do comparisons. ua-cam.com/video/SxiF-00ynE8/v-deo.html
Can you talk about wheel base size? Suregrips are great, but the wheel base is a little short. Great for dance skating but if someone wants more stability which skates have that longer wheelbase?
You would have to look at the sizing of the plate. That is what usually determines your wheel base. As you've stated, a shorter plate helps with quickening your moves. Longer plates help with stability. A website called conniesskateplace.com specializes in helping you build the skate to your liking. Get with them and they can direct you to the plate you need.
So I’m trying to buy these skates and I literally cannot find them being sold in half sizes ANYWHERE! Is there gonna be any major issue with me just buying a half size up and getting an 11?? I’m a size 10.5. I’ll just wearing thick socks if I have to lol
Thanks for sharing... Riddle seems like the way to go... For $30 more, seems they last longer & are worth difference... So final $130 skates $100 wheels $020 bearings ~~~~~~~~~~ $250 to $300
My husband bought me a pair of Riedell 120 in leather. I'm a returning skater and skate like a beginner. These skates feel very professional. Do you think these are too advanced for a beginner?
No skate is too advanced for a beginner. The better the skate the easier the results. The only downside is the money spent if you don't keep at it and stop skating. Those 120s are a great boot,and far better than rentals.
@@ertfgghhhh yes I noticed the same as well. On any adult night, all the whites have the speed skates, and that's all they post on Facebook groups (some having 20+ pairs of speed skates). I figured it was just that white people like to skate fast in a circle, and not actually dance (or Rhythm) to the beat which is a black thing anyway. The only white person I know with heeled Riedell's is one of my teachers, who has over 35 medals in national and regional roller skating. He hates people who just skate in a circle lol. He is more skilled than any black skater I met other than Leo White the 1 wheel roller. Leo invented roller skating on 1 wheel only, as well as STL Ballroom skating.
SkateLyfe TV that’s great to know. I’m a step above beginner but would like to invest in something that is long lasting. I guess at this point preference is key. Maybe I will do both ;-)
Chad Good Morning my brother, i love your videos, im trying to look for a great pair of outdoor roller skates to ride on concrete and sidewalks and also to ride indoors in the skating rinks, help from you would be great my brother cause honestly i have no idea at all on how to shop properly for roller skates, lmk if your able to help me brother, have a beautiful blessed day and hope to hear from you soon. :)
Ok I'm back! Lol a hard head make a soft ass! I'm the prime example of that. During my research🕵️ I have discoverd. If you get cheep skates you will end up hurting yourself. Due to the quality of wheels, the stopper etc... Hey brotha my apologies. You was on point with the pricing safety included.lol😒💯
Are these skates also good for someone who is not quite a beginner but not quite an expert? I'm just getting back into skating after 8 years or so and I need new skates.
I think so. I've been rollling a 111 boot with a plastic plate for 1.5years; it gets the job done. If you think you're gonna keep skating, look at the one with a metal plate. Metal will last longer and perform better. Is is noticeably heavier though so if you have weak legs... think about that reality. Metal is also recommended if you are a larger person.

Cant get my hands on any decent roller skates or at least the ones that I want which are the impalas so are the Chicago’s 800 good? I’m a beginner btw. Thanks for the vid bro!
who is't loves burb'rry shouldst wend to heaven dont get the chicago theyre plastic wheel no good
hi I needed up getting em. They were good for 3 days but when I S started to get comfortable at skating and balancing, I could tell they were shit cause I started to lose my balance and the wheels were all wobbly lol
who is't loves burb'rry shouldst wend to heaven oml id wait for them to tear first but i heard bad stuff abt impalas breaking easy aswell
Could you please do one for best skates for intermediate and above? Please.
For the boot for a beginner is it good to have it cover your full ankle or can you have one which leaves your ankle out.
Its really up to you and what youre comfortable with. I like full ankle support especially when being on wheels for safety
@@SkateLyfeTV ok thanks
Chad. Much love and respect for what you do to the scene. I am a beginner. Went with your recommendation with Riedells but opted for adjustable toe-stops. So question: Should I start out with toe-stops (adjusted all the way in) or jam plugs?
Riedell!!! Quality. You get what you pay for...
Do the Riedell's fit true to size?....I wear a 10.5 - 11 in Nike's....not sure what size I should order. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
I always tell people get a 1/2 size or one size up because they are a hard boot and you want your feet to have breathing room.
Community - may I ask what about the reidells make them good for rythmn and dance moves ? I’m trying to know what to look for exactly … thanks
Thank you for the information......it was very helpful
Get hybrid wheels.
Just letting you know this information is still being used in 2023. My local black owned shop recommends Riedell too. So....that's what I'm going with.
What kind of boot plate/truck and wheels are you currently using?
Do I need any specific tools if I’m going to change my wheels and bearings in the future?
Nope just socket and wrench
this vid is a few years old, do you still stand by the info in 2023. or are there more advanced options available
Tony Montana I’d love to see an answer to this...I’m kinda in the same boat!
@@PicklesFiona aye its a guy named Milwaukee Skate Fam or sum like that and he responded to this on his skate video.
Rhythm skating is more of what you get at roller skating rinks. They do tricks, partner and dance skating to the beat of the music. Artistic skating is about form as they compete in competition's and have leagues. They are like ice skaters on 8s. They are even trying to get it into the Olympic games.
You show Red Bones bearings 8 pack. On their website, they have 16 packs of 7 or 8mm. Which mm to get? So confusing 😕
Hey Chad, thanks for the video definitely helps me out to choose the right skates for me as a beginner. This is noob question, I notice a lot of rhythm skater who wears a boot not the low cut skates, tend not to tie it up all way. Is there reason why they do that?
I don’t like lacing up high because it’s binding and confining on legs.
What do you reccomend for intermediate?
YO, how can you recommend anything when you still CAN'T SKATE??!!! 😂. I'm joking. I'm glad to run across 1 of your videos. Keep up the amazing work... I'm sure you forgotten me but I'm still THE COLDEST BENCH SKATER!!!
lol I havent seen you in forever!!!
🤣🤣🤣
Thanks alot for the info, very helpful!!!
Fyi the Riedell Angel is vinyl not leather. Riedells more expensive boots are made out of leather. Still a good choice for quality inexpensive boots.
Does California have a roller rink like St Louis? live in Long Beach, CA. Los Angeles County.
Reds ❤ ima sk8 boarder ..roller skates guy. Im also a redell fan .❤ Your video
Do they have rollers that are not as high or fast for adult skater? I am a beginner skater. When I put skates on, I feel fear of height.
Yo what's the best precision wheels for skates . Are we still doing rubber or? Let me know,I want to get me some wheels. I use to skate back in the 70s on I believe precision or rubber wheels. help me out please
I'm in Stl, where can you buy local?
Will you tell me the difference and outside wheels and inside roller ring Wheels please?
What are your thoughts on the Riedell 111 Boost set? I can’t see the difference in the skates or the price.
what are best skates for outside skating...my daughter wants a pair and i'm thinking of ordering for mothers day
its the wheels that are really what you are looking for! other youtube channels have breakdowns for boots and it really comes down to how much ankle support you want. Wheels are interchangeable for skates - so u can get indoor, outdoor, hybrid, speed and wooden wheels.
What are good skates for a big person (250-310)?
Nylon plates! Or aluminum plates
How are the Brand Impala??
Can these wheels be used outside
If I wanted to build my own skates. What boots, plates, wheels and bearings would you recommend? DMV SK8FAM
I know for boots you can go to a military surplus store
What is your website for the good skates.
i had reidells and me being a rough skater i bust right thru it like nothing in the first year having em
Are you in NYC if so, I'd like to meet. Maybe you've discovered some interesting movements to share with me.
I love this page bro! What are you recommendations for buying a plate to dance in that’s not super pricey??
I'm currently looking for a plate but am going all the way (not caring about price). That aside, Look for a plate with a higher kingpin angle °. Higher angles are worse for going fast in but apparently articulate your turning and pivoting movements better.
I don't have the experience to recommend one over another so here's where I started. Get the basics and do comparisons.

Are ridell skates both for indoor and outdoor?
great stuff thanks for this information
What Pagés do You recommended to Buy Big cuads sizes?
Thank you very helpful
Can you talk about wheel base size? Suregrips are great, but the wheel base is a little short. Great for dance skating but if someone wants more stability which skates have that longer wheelbase?
You would have to look at the sizing of the plate. That is what usually determines your wheel base. As you've stated, a shorter plate helps with quickening your moves. Longer plates help with stability. A website called conniesskateplace.com specializes in helping you build the skate to your liking. Get with them and they can direct you to the plate you need.
i love sure grip i have two pair and they are awesome.
So final
$130 skates
$100 wheels
$020 bearings
~~~~~~~~~~
$250 to $300
You can fund packages on ebay and online stores with good wheels and sometimes bearings
Tell me what skate should I get to start skating I do know how to skate it’s just been a minute since I’ve skat, so Tell me a good Brand ?
I wear a size 9 what size do I wear in skates
My husband bought me a pair of Riedell 120 in leather. I'm a returning skater and skate
like a beginner. These skates feel very professional. Do you think these are too advanced for a beginner?
No skate is too advanced for a beginner. The better the skate the easier the results. The only downside is the money spent if you don't keep at it and stop skating. Those 120s are a great boot,and far better than rentals.
What's interesting is that in the UK the style is ice hockey boots, whereas in the USA it's figure skating boots. I wonder why?
Culture that's why
@@godjhaka7376 mos def. Black americans wear mostly riedells/black boots and many whites wear speed skates (no heel/sneakerlike)
@@ertfgghhhh yes I noticed the same as well. On any adult night, all the whites have the speed skates, and that's all they post on Facebook groups (some having 20+ pairs of speed skates). I figured it was just that white people like to skate fast in a circle, and not actually dance (or Rhythm) to the beat which is a black thing anyway. The only white person I know with heeled Riedell's is one of my teachers, who has over 35 medals in national and regional roller skating. He hates people who just skate in a circle lol. He is more skilled than any black skater I met other than Leo White the 1 wheel roller. Leo invented roller skating on 1 wheel only, as well as STL Ballroom skating.
How are the Riedells for wide footers?
The 120 boot has a wider toe-box.
Thank you so much for this video. What is your opinion on American dream plus wheels in comparison to the bones elite?
You're very welcome!! All Americans work well also, they are a little more slick so you'll be able to slide and glide more
SkateLyfe TV that’s great to know. I’m a step above beginner but would like to invest in something that is long lasting. I guess at this point preference is key. Maybe I will do both ;-)
Wow I didn't know you had a UA-cam Channel.
I watch you on Instagram.😊
Which is better? F.I.T. 80 pro or fils?
Chad Good Morning my brother, i love your videos, im trying to look for a great pair of outdoor roller skates to ride on concrete and sidewalks and also to ride indoors in the skating rinks, help from you would be great my brother cause honestly i have no idea at all on how to shop properly for roller skates, lmk if your able to help me brother, have a beautiful blessed day and hope to hear from you soon. :)
How do i change bearings and wheels
Ok I'm back! Lol a hard head make a soft ass! I'm the prime example of that. During my research🕵️ I have discoverd. If you get cheep skates you will end up hurting yourself. Due to the quality of wheels, the stopper etc... Hey brotha my apologies. You was on point with the pricing safety included.lol😒💯
Angel Juniors are exactly what our local competition team coaches recommended. Everything is right for the price point.
Are these skates also good for someone who is not quite a beginner but not quite an expert? I'm just getting back into skating after 8 years or so and I need new skates.
I think so. I've been rollling a 111 boot with a plastic plate for 1.5years; it gets the job done.
If you think you're gonna keep skating, look at the one with a metal plate. Metal will last longer and perform better. Is is noticeably heavier though so if you have weak legs... think about that reality. Metal is also recommended if you are a larger person.
thanks this is really helpful!
