So much of being a musician now is about creating content on social media it seems and It's disheartening for me because i have pretty bad social anxiety. It's a struggle to even imagine myself doing anything like what i see other musicians doing online. My focus lately is on working on these issues i have and I've uploaded two covers as a challenge for myself but only a very small step like that felt huge to me. If i can get there it will take a lot of time - and also thinking about the fact that it takes years to even build something when/if i get to that point. I try not to let these thoughts stop me from keeping on working and enjoying playing music every single day, and it's literally all i do right now. But most of the time i feel like i'm fumbling around in total darkness and just having faith i will eventually find a way. That feeling never stops being terrifying.
This is why most people won't make it - it's really really hard to have the self-discipline and self-belief to do all of this. I already have a full-time job, one that pays very well, which I am very good at and at which I work very hard. But I am not sure that I could do what you are doing, as that's much harder. Great video, thanks.
That’s right, it takes a great deal of discipline and patience, which are really hard to develop, but conversely, I think music can be a means of Mastery, to develop those virtues. Making a career of it is a different story. Thanks for your input!
Please, please forgive my jaded initial knee-jerk reaction: when the video started, I thought: "Oh great. Go all-in, risk everything, and six years later, you will have 1400 subscribers." =( Then I kept listening and realized a few things. 1: You have amazing advice and production. 2: You're still "showing up every single day" and making content, which is truly inspiring. 3: Even if you are starting out slow, your channel still showed up in _MY_ feed out of the blue. That realization helped me feel better about now being the best time ever to fully commit.
Thank you! 🙏 that really means a lot. To be honest actually, I stopped uploading consistently on this channel for the time being as I’ve been focussed on creating an online keyboard course and building another channel more niched down teaching piano tutorials. But I’ve got such a massive list of ideas for this channel and I’ve got the skills now to make the UA-cam thing really work out. You’re getting me hyped up to return! (Probably November).
Love this video, insane how much one needs this, when pursuing music as a living. Very well put together advice in here! Love the content, keep it up. Comment for the algorithm! 👌
It's crazy how few views your videos seem to get on UA-cam, and yet you come out here with such a great and meaningful message! Truly examplary to see you practice what you preach here, and it is really inspiring to say the least! I'm not planning to become a professional musician myself, as it's more of a hobby, but I nevertheless have a deep passion for the piano which I like to share here on UA-cam, and you definitely gave me that little boost to keep on going! Thank you for such a sincere video, and I wish you all the best for your endeavours! :D

I appreciate your sentiment. This is a process that looks different for everyone. It's inspiring that you're doing everything you can to further your career. I really want to find my audience and make content that I'm proud of. This will take some time. Commitment is a struggle for me due to mental illness. I'm not looking to be an incredibly successful musician, but I know that if I continue to press on and use a subtractive method of determining what matters to me, I will essentially reach my lofty aspirations. Great points and you’re absolutely right. This process took me 7 years, to get to the level a commitment I’ve got this year, it takes time. By the looks of it, you’ve made a lot of content. Keep it up and good luck!

Yet it's propably the other way around, me smoking weed makes me not get stuff done, which makes me think it's all impossible and that only leaves smoking weed as a method of not feeling to concerned about my dreams simply vanishing in front of my eyes. A long while now i asked myself whether i should go, spent some months, to fix my addiction, or if I should finally start learning a job, making some money, whether i like it or not. I tried doing both at the same time, didn't end well. Im 25 now, if i go to a clinic i won't be able to start learning a job this year, meaning I would have to start with 26, and be done with 29.....I really dislike those numbers. But your Video gave me hope, and made one thing clear. Maybe economic wealth is somewhat dependent on how old you are, and when you start, with what qualification. But i realised it really is okay for me to not care at all, because that's not my goal. There is no point on my checklist telling me to make 2.5k+€ a month before i'm 30. And while I for myself find the thought of never smoking weed again completely ridiculous, In my badly laid out strategy plan I see more and more clearly that i require of myself (nice wording of you) to break my current habits, implement a few good routines which all seem so impossible to me right now, and to do that I have to first clean my head, my space and my headspace, then evaluate whether or not I need more money to follow the daily routines of pursuing my dreams, and the rest becomes optional. Doesn't matter anymore what job I have to do to pay my bills, it just shouldn't take up more time than needed. I don't need money, i need quality of life. And i do treasure these timeless, peaceful moments of pure creativity, but made an addiction loop out of it as well, when im constantly struggling, thinking I can't do this, just to be evermore flashed, chasing the kick of suddenly getting in that flow state. I do firmly believe, when I "just" start to treat myself better, and maybe start believing other people telling me I'm by far not as bad as I think I am, treat making music as my job and start showing up sober, at least until it's all done, then my life surely will be on track to inviting happiness into it. I think when everything you do leads to you being a professional musician, then there is only a very small chance that nothing will ever happen, and a feasable if not good chance to actually get there. But, even worse for me than less smoking: i really really hate social medias. Don't have them for years, don't want anything to do with that personally. But then the realisation kicked in again: I don't need to have something to do with it personally, only for business. Only Main Menju needs socials, not myself. No stupid memes and time waste required or intended. That lifts much pressure about the whole thing. I don't need to make believe about my person, don't need to lie about how good my life is. But it's a great opportunity to invite these 1000 fans on my musical journey, and authenticity, like you got going on Mr Bottz, clearly is the key to first achieving happiness, and then manifesting success. I'll be on my way then. Thanks for helping Josh
Thanks for sharing man. I've been in similar ruts like that in my life, and the absolute #1 best thing I did was journalling. It's so great for sitting down with your thoughts and figuring your way out, I recommend it honestly, it can be so life-changing. In the journal you can start crafting your dream life in 5 years, let's say. And then you can craft the non-ideal life in 5 years, if nothing changed. Writing out these visions can be very compelling! Also I'd say not to worry about the age thing, everyone's on their own journey. Its hard not to feel that pressure, especially with that big 30 looming (I feel the same pressure), but focus on each day and trying to make your situation just 1% better, not making huge changes that are overwhelming. I hope some of those ideas help. Good luck man, I really wish you the best! Let me know if you need any more help :)
i would also promote Jesus bro. John 3:16 says it all “For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whosoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life”. God wants the best for us, and wants to see us saved, not perishing. Love journaling too! Wish you the best!
From the jump the relatability of this video is so inspiring, I’m saving this video as an affirmational reminder, I’m right at a turning point of new job new place and I’m so ready to hit the ground running with literally paused three minutes in: daily practice and morning deep work You become Jacob collier overnight if you do it sincerely So many opportunities to seize Not to self promote but I have newfound connections to my local Knoxville orchestra for the symphony I’m writing My multimedia collective Suburban Scumbags just lost a physical location, but have gained new synchronous bookers and bands, collaborating for a festival My personal band projects Orange and others have launched with escalating momentum in our dispersed bubbling scenes Completed an EP and made an unlisted LIVE video, getting into the studio for 3 more with, newly, Veteran Jackson Cooper and Emo Savant Nate Johnston You’ve shown you can live a musical life: in harmony Will be sending this video to my friend, video just came at a right time if I’m cheesin 🧀😎
Aye awesome! Sounds like you’re on a good buzz with a lot of projects in the works. I wish you the best, hope everything works out, especially that symphony. Sounds epic!
thank you for this vid brother... im a chronic procrastinator and i really dream of being a magician at the piano playing. ill try tomorrow all of these :) gn
Great video! I'm on the same train working hard on my music career and just getting back into creating content now as opposed to purely releasing music consistently
This is a real powerful video for me. It’s actually a part of my prayers being answered. Currently on government benefits in dream mode so I FEEL what you’re saying. I’ve subscribed and saved this vid. I’m going to find you on socials. Will save up to take your keyboard course and you can count me in as one of the 1000 true fans. Thank you.
Wow, you've made my whole week! Bless you my friend, I'm so glad you found it and it resonated with you! You can join my Skool community (in the description). it's free. We can chat in there :)
Im releasing every friday on Spotify almost 3 years in a row. But i have fulltime job, just in case to be safe. But streams are going up every month. Super excited :)
Congrats, that’s awesome! Definitely good to be safe. One of my regrets was not maintaining a solid job while building my music stuff. There’s a documentary from a legendary kiwi hiphop artists named Tom Scott called ‘Don’t quit your day job’, I wish I worked more over the years.
Gotta say, this is a very inspiring and well put together video. Nice work, and you're sure to make it with this attitude. In my life there's a couple of blockades to "going all in" at the moment - but this is reassuring since I am already well on my way (already in Uni, and already playing for 16 years at this point...)
Thank you 🙏 Sounds like you're in a good place. I should have mentioned that going all in as more a process I think, it takes some time. We can't expect to be super disciplined and all that straight out the gate. So long as we improve daily we'll get there!
@@joshbottz oh absolutely, couldn't have asked for a much better head start, the main thing is I gotta finish my service in the army (it's mandatory here) - they at least let me start working on my bachelor's in the meantime. Goof luck to you too man, and if you have need for a bassist/drummer - HMU ;)
@@joshbottz I believe that in my case it's the discipline of music that helped the military discipline... many years in a serious conservatory leave you with a penchant for strict routines ;)
Cool mate, I'll sub. I've been doing the full time job and playing music nights and weekends last couple of years. Usually just bar gigs but we have done music festivals. Great fun, but full disclosure I'm currently feeling a bit broke and burnt out!
Cheers mate. It’s definitely tough, especially bar gigs, playing the covers everyone wants to hear aye. A friend of mine, incredibly talented musician called Ollie Crooks, he burned out from going full time as a muso playing those pub gigs, and having no time or enthusiasm for his own stuff. Definitely a balancing act.
i’m attempting to learn music production i figured out how to make some decent drums still learning how to make good chord progression and a lot of other things really bad at and on top of that learning guitar and after wanna learn piano/keyboard i’m doing this while im in college and the more i do it the more i enjoy it and i feel like im just waiting till i feel im decent enough to really be like hey mom im gonna drop everything to make some music
This dude is spreading false positivity on his youtube channel. You will never wake up one day and it will be straight fire. It takes years and years of accumulating different skill sets. It took me around 8 years to attain this level of "straight fire" Just know that it will take a long long time. If you are willing and have the money and time then go for it. But remember that it is one of the most competitive difficult industries
@@TheTeeProd it’s not ‘false positivity’, it’s just positivity, and encouragement to keep going. I agree with you. It’s taken me 8 years of consistent practice to get decent at the keys, and I’m still only half way there. But the principle I’m really talking about is that sometimes it doesn’t feel like you’re progressing, but over the long run, you look back and marvel at the progress you make, so long as you stay consistent.
@@joshbottz When you omit valuable information like "it took me 8 years and im still half way there" then thats called *false positivity* . this kid looking at this comment will NOW finally realize that no it wont be "straight fire" and yes it is as difficult as a medical degree. so it will take until he is 34 to say to his mom "i am ready to make it in music"
@@TheTeeProd fair point, fair point. But I did say something of this ilk at 6:15. I’m not the enemy my guy. There are way worse offenders out there, who are actually capitalising off these insecurities. I am only promoting a positive and optimistic mindset, daily focussed deep work, daily practice, investing in education, etc. All good stuff. You should try it, especially deep work. You will be absolutely shocked how much you can achieve. Learning Mandarin won’t take you 8 years if you really try it.
Motivated messages sincerely delivered. Each facet well considered but It was a lengthy list i regret that in my case bordered on overwhelming. I listened through the end and missed the one or two "start here" take aways. I will watch it again. That being said, I have confidence in you. congratulations and continued success.
Thank you for your comment, and I really appreciate your feedback! I hadn’t considered that this might be a lot 😅 If it's too much I'd recommend starting with the daily practice if you can, whatever your instrument, even if it's just 5-10 minutes a day. Good luck :)
Cheers mate, excited to share some dope stuff with you. There will be vids like this one, grooves, covers, vlogs, and some skits... It's a bit of a mashup but I wanna just share music good vibes and have a blast lol.
Hour is cracked bro. If you can set proper goals to progress doing that. I could see it doing so much. Also nice being in a place that supports you being a musician lol.
An hour has actually been sooooo good. I've tried 4/3/2 hours a day, but I would often burn out on those routines. 1 hour is the perfect balance, and I'm still seeing heaps of improvements.
How old are you mate? Im 24 right now, do you have any tips? This video is very insightful, like you said, it doesn’t happen overnight. Statistically speaking if you are consistent you will objectively get results Also 1K+ subs man, you got your goal for this semester
Yeah man, this video pushed us over the line wooo. I'm 27, I got heaps of tips, I shared 8 of them in this video haha. Lots more coming, I just have to script them into engaging UA-cam videos first. I'll get more tips as I go, and hopefully I get better at communicating my ideas.
@@joshbottz I think you are doing amazing, content creation is a great hussle to do while working for your music dreams, I’ll be here for the ride, excited to see what you have in store mate
True facts bro! Terrible time to practice actually 😅 Even on the keyboard with my headphones in I'm making a racket whacking the plastic keys and stomping the pedal.
Hey everyone, I’m just looking for some advice. I love music, playing with other people at shows and jamming is my favorite thing in the world. I’m about to turn 23 and I’m debating going back to college for nursing to have a stable career to pay for my music hobby, or going for music education, and trying to teach or produce for a living. What would you do? ❤
Interesting dilemma. I went back to study music at 24, and found my band and core collaborations in music school, which has really set me up. I also got a great education from which I can now teach and build my teaching business. I think teaching is the best approach to actually earn a solid income, and it's really possible nowadays to teach online and grow an online business. It's all up to you man. I always err on the side of doing what I love, but at the risk of financial hardship. Good luck :)
It all depends on your current musical/instrument level. You need to asses your musical skills and then ask yourself how many years you still need and then ask if you have money to support yourself. If your priority is to build a family then forget music. But if you are a ride or die kind of guy and you still need 5 years then go for it. Dont listen to anyone selling you a dream online. Music is around 10 years of solid practicing(between your instrument and ear training). You need to assess at what level you are currently at. A website called Meludia has a great musical assessment for musicians. And then ask a professor about your current level at the instrument. If you are not super disciplined and determined , forget about it. This is coming from a guy who sacrificed all his 20's to be better. Good luck
Hmm, I think they’re getting pretty realistic now! Short answer is that I’m not too pessimistic about it. Ai will probably replace some jobs in the industry, but live music will never die out. We love music and follow artists because they are humans. If you want my long answer, come back in a few years because I am writing a science fiction fantasy book series called The Adventures of Jazz Cat and Reggae Dog, which is about musicians fighting against a tyrannical system and organisation that has spent decades killing live music, instruments and all records, and replacing them with ‘cocostars’ (essentially super fake pop stars) and ‘synthbots’ (fully fledged ai-music bots that are channeling some other ‘music’ from another dimension that has a hypnotic effect). In this world and story, real/live music is dying at the hands of an evil organisation and their control over the advanced tech. I’ll be exploring these themes in great detail. First book will be published next year!
Imagine you never found an interest at all and kept on everyday life with a job and everything be normal and standard. Nothing wrong with that, just a lot of people live like that without a hobby or appreciation for the depth of certain areas outside of base survival like music or other things. Defo a blessing
I left school a few weeks ago and went right into music production. I can't play an instrument or have ever studied music but using udio AI i have made a load of money with music for videos and things. Even made a few youtube videos AI made by just copying other people's things and then getting AI to 'remix' it all. All of it stacks up. a few weeks in and I can now not do my part time job.
This is not the path of a musician or an artist bro. Do this to make some quick money if you want but you will pay the larger price in the long run with a life lacking true meaning. I think you missed the point of my video. Ai is not the way of true music, nor is money the true reward. Start practicing an instrument to discover the truth of it.
@@joshbottz I ain't got time to learn an instrument, plus it's expensive and i was never very good at music in school. My life does not lack meaning, that's rude to say. I feel like you are saying that because I am making a load of money in the music biz and you are not.
@@bobbyboyderecords I’m not saying anything about you. What I mean is that if you pursue that path, you’ll miss out on the true joy of what being a musician actually means. And I’m sad for you, because it’s such an incredible thing, walking the path of mastery on an instrument, making friends and lifelong connections, exploring your purpose and creating art. No amount of money can buy those things. I only wish you the best man!
You're making a bunch of big mistakes because your music professors weren't good enough teachers to get you ready for the music business and you've never had anyone to yell at you about this stuff and you aren't desperate enough to figure it out for yourself. You don't need to grow your UA-cam channel with covers and jokes, just post 1 original brilliant song. If you post even 1 competent song you instantly get thousands of subs every time. You are wasting time not getting to the most important thing, which is the idea, lyric, earworm and hook of your original song. The positive UA-cam comments are only misleading you into complacency and depression. You're presenting yourself as a cover artist instead of an artist and that's affecting your career. The people are not able to tell you this because they are nice people.
I didn't even present half of the picture in this video. My main project is a band called Emily Alice, you can stream our latest EP on Spotify, it's called Hindsight. If you're willing to put the time in to write a tough love comment like that, you can at least check out my main project. Peace. (p.s. we had PLENTY of grilling from our lecturer/first producer at music school 🤣)
@@joshbottz I tried to look through your profile, the video description, and I searched your name on the web before posting a comment. Didn't find anything about Emily Alice.
@@zyxyuv1650 Good point, I should have mentioned it in the video actually. There are a lot of points to going all in as a musician, but one of the main ones (literally a SUPER important one 🤦♂my bad lol) is finding your music tribe/collaborators. I'm working on a video about this. Also my next upload is a vlog about our EP release. Hey but I appreciate your comment actually, it's true.
From the jump the relatability of this video is so inspiring, I’m saving this video as an affirmational reminder,
I’m right at a turning point of new job new place and I’m so ready to hit the ground running with literally paused three minutes in: daily practice and morning deep work
You become Jacob collier overnight if you do it sincerely
So many opportunities to seize
Not to self promote but I have newfound connections to my local Knoxville orchestra for the symphony I’m writing
My multimedia collective Suburban Scumbags just lost a physical location, but have gained new synchronous bookers and bands, collaborating for a festival
My personal band projects Orange and others have launched with escalating momentum in our dispersed bubbling scenes
Completed an EP and made an unlisted LIVE video, getting into the studio for 3 more with, newly, Veteran Jackson Cooper and Emo Savant Nate Johnston
You’ve shown you can live a musical life: in harmony
Will be sending this video to my friend, video just came at a right time if I’m cheesin 🧀😎
Nice bro, it’s a balance. Great work on releasing so much!

Awesome stuff man
This is a real powerful video for me.

@@joshbottz Cheers! Gonna look this documentary :)
@@nram3930 Nice bro. Military discipline must help with music in some way I'd imagine? That's great that you can study in the meantime though.
@@joshbottz I believe that in my case it's the discipline of music that helped the military discipline... many years in a serious conservatory leave you with a penchant for strict routines ;)
@@nram3930 Haha that's classic.
i happened to stumble across this video on the last day of me smoking weed lol. thanks for that. gonna go work on music at 6 am
Nice bro that is good timing. Good luck!
That's awesome. Keep making music and one day you'll just wake up and it'll be straight fire.
This dude is spreading false positivity on his youtube channel. You will never wake up one day and it will be straight fire. It takes years and years of accumulating different skill sets.
It took me around 8 years to attain this level of "straight fire"
Just know that it will take a long long time.

Okay. This video has fully convinced me to give it my all. Here we go.
Aye that's awesome! Good luck!
Just subscribed! I'm also a keyboardist, staying sober trying to get organized stay focused and get monitized
Sounds like we're on the same buzz. Best of luck bro!
really like your energy bro

How old are you mate? Im 24 right now, do you have any tips?
This video is very insightful, like you said, it doesn’t happen overnight. Statistically speaking if you are consistent you will objectively get results
Also 1K+ subs man, you got your goal for this semester
Yeah man, this video pushed us over the line wooo. I'm 27, I got heaps of tips, I shared 8 of them in this video haha. Lots more coming, I just have to script them into engaging UA-cam videos first. I'll get more tips as I go, and hopefully I get better at communicating my ideas.

not easy if you have neighbours to practice 6am.. also semester=6months trimester=3months. great video btw, I'm in
True facts bro!
Good luck
Making music is about life bro
Straight facts man. That's my whole philosophy, it's a way of life. A path of self-mastery.
30k in debt for a degree is ridiculous. But ye, on point for the topic.
I think it’s way worse for elite music colleges. I think 30k is pretty tame. But still a lot 🥲
Bro, what's your take on AI apps like Udio and Suno
First book will be published next year!
dont forget me when you're famous
OK here we go.. im going for shoegaze / alt indie
I guess this was my sign to practice 😂
It’s actually the last chance to “make it” before shitty AI meme songs flood the market
yo comment section popping off
Facts
Music is a curse. I wish I never gave it a thought.
😂😂😂
The problem is it's also a blessing of sorts on good days
shut up
Imagine you never found an interest at all and kept on everyday life with a job and everything be normal and standard.
@@joshbottz thank you
This is super funny thread 😂 i think he is trolling you 😂@@joshbottz
The main thing is producing banger tunes, I just do it with my band of professionals (pro vocalist, guitarist, producers, etc) rather than trying to do it alone.
@zyxyuv maybe stick to the crash course videos on your page, maybe then you make it somewhere too:)
doing the most @zyxyuv1650 keep up the good work 💪
