What you imagine about the western saw leaving a clean surface is correct. I can get similar results sometimes with my japanese saw if I don't apply as much pressure, but it's slower to cut this way. Long rip cuts with a push saw work best when the board is about the height of your knees. A low bench or sawhorses will resist the cut making the saw more efficient. Cutting a board in the vise makes it flex, so I prefer to have a support to saw against.

これはわかりやすい！確かに西洋のこではレッグバイスに挟んで押し上げるように切る方がいますね。
海外動画で、押す鋸と引く鋸の違いについて説明している動画を見たことがあります。英語だったので、何を言っているのかよく理解できませんでしたが、たぶん、こんなこと言ってたのかなと想像しつつ説明してみました。
木材の繊維方向を意識すると、鋸の使い方もちょっとうまくなった気がしますね。

それにしても、縦挽き台、いいですね。
ずっと作りたかった縦挽き台ですが、いざ作ってみたら大きすぎて置き場所に困ってます。
コンパクトなものをもう１台作ろうかと、考え中。
で、さらにものが増えて置き場所が。。。
でも、ある程度大きい方が使い勝手は良さそうだし、、、
スペースの問題は悩ましいですね。

いやーよく分かりました。ならいめとさかめもやっていると引っ掛かりの違いがありますわ。
私は曲がるのはノコに反った癖をつけてしまっのかと思っていました。または自分の引く癖や立ち位置もあると思ったり。引く方が手前は確かに方向を調整しやすいですね！
そして！徐ろにまたまた作業台の登場に笑。切り屑で墨線が隠れて吹き飛ばすの繰り返しは効率も悪いし、断面が汚くなっていつも困ってます。これを作るのがやはりFEWさんだと感心しきり。🎉

作業台は事前に綿密な計画なしに作ったので、あとでいろいろ改善点が出てきまして、メイキング動画の投稿をやめました。
今後また、改訂版作業台が徐に登場するかもしれません。
