Saddam Hussein's Very Public Purge

- Shortly after assuming the Presidency of Iraq in July 1979, Saddam Hussein convened a gathering of his Ba'ath Party leaders and publicly had 68 of them removed for alleged treason. Twenty-two of them were subsequently sentenced to death by firing squad.

What I've learnt from history:
If you're ever exposed as a conspirator and promised your life in exchange for giving up your friends, you will still be killed.
I don't know the ins and outs of this horror show, but a documentary I was watching said that the guy on the stand reading out the names had been arrested and tortured beforehand. Saddam's trump card was to have the guy's wife and daughters brought to the prison he was at and promise him that either he agrees to do the false confession or he gets to watch the prison guards rape and kill his wife and daughters.
He did it to save their lives, not his own. If he was a smart man he would have known he was already a gonna...

As brutal as it is, it is perfectly logical. If I was the person being conspired against, I would do the same. Not only is this person a conspirator, but he's a traitor who sold out his own allies. He's already shown that he cannot ever be trusted. He's worse than the rest of the conspirators.

For people who don’t get the purpose of a “cult of personality” look at how that one guy starts praising Saddam once he saw people taken away.
@@bobbyduggart4493 cringe.
@Duffy63 The actual point of the cult of personality is to make everyone publicly praise you, so that no one knows what other people feel and are less likely to be able to speak honestly and potentially plot against the leader.
That people think you are a God is a nice side effect, but really it’s all about harboring an atmosphere of lies and mistrust, because you never know if the other man really believes what he says or if he is just following the crowd.
Dictatorships have to keep everyone divided in order to maintain power, this is the the actual, functional use of cult of personality.
@Duffy63 Pro-tip: the elites with actual power aren’t going to be brainwashed like some peasant farmer and what some countryside peasant thinks is irrelevant. Cult of personalities rarely actually brainwash people and the joy and excitement of Saddam’s fall is proof. Along with Gaddafi, Ceausescu, and all the other Godly dictators that fell in their time.
@Duffy63 Well I never claimed that it alone was sufficient in maintaining power. However it is created in order to maintain a facade in the thought and speech of people, so that it becomes extremely difficult to criticize and therefore plot against the dear leader.

These dictators are created in childhood by their experiences and are usually narcissists or sociopaths. Ron Rosen in his book "Explaining Hitler", said the same thing, that you don't just call these people evil and leave it at that, we need to understand how they were created. The building was probably surrounded by dozens of soldiers and others law enforcement officers loyal to Saddam Hussein.
I'm not a fan of Saddam. But Iraq is never the same after Saddam got deposed
He first had the people he was less sure about kill the people he was closest to. It’s “less sure about”, not “enemies”. It’s the people you know the best that stab you in the back. Think Caesar and Brutus. The people that knew you on the come up saw you in your vulnerable states and could more easily peer behind the curtain. It’s dangerous to keep them around if you’re looking at things purely for power politics. Those less familiar people can more easily be mounded through first impressions and more precise image control...with the help of military muscle of course. I mean, it just makes sense...
Why hasn’t a major movie been made? This scene alone would be epic. Tragic, but fascinating.
people would romanticize hussein because people like powerful and confident men, something not everyone can live through

I hope he was one of the counter-conspirators, trying to play mind games. But, he probably wasn't. I don't really think saddam cared either way.

Saddam was the scarface of the political world.
@abdo abdo I know for sure that if Saddam and Gadaffi were alive there would be more peace in the middle east. They were both killed unjustly.
@abdo abdo Saddam is like scarface in that he ran his nation as if it was a drug empire and with a grandiose element to it and basically but it worked.
