  • In this video I'm going to test out the PowerShark, the new USB-C power supply for the Amiga 500, 600 and 1200.
    I'm going to put it through a gruling array of tests to see how it handles them, and how this could help protect your Amiga from any power supply damage.
    A yes, it is possible to get more than power from a standard USB socket - The PowerIQ standard on Anker devices seems to support it, but it seems to be an unofficial USB standard.
    This video is not sponsored, I purchased the PowerShark for my own use. Also, these are the results of my experiments and you should check to see if the product meets your requirements.

    I have seen some people moaning about the price of the Powershark but when you think of its capabilities and Amiga protection circuits it is worth every penny IMHO, and thanks for a professional and unbiased in depth review Rob

      Factoring in the price for both this and the USB C adapter and postage puts it in a higher price bracket to other modern replacements. Not helped by them charging VAT unnecessarily for customers outside the EU unfortunately.

    • @RobSmithDev
      @RobSmithDev  2 місяці тому

      @mja65 true maybe the next batch will be cheaper. I did just find and test a 100W USB-C charger that works perfectly and only cost £19

    It looks like a well designed little gadget. When I saw this device originally, I wasn't too sure about it, but these tests really put it through it's paces. I also wonder if it won't even get that hot in actual use as some heat would be coupled into the Amiga itself and dissipated (so the Amiga acts like a heatsink for it).

    • @RobSmithDev
      @RobSmithDev  2 місяці тому +1

      Yeah seems under "normal" use sticks at that 40 degrees level which is perfectly fine and kind of "ambient" for electronics I guess

    Thanks for the deep dive into the murky waters of the Power Shark, Rob! You've given me a lot of confidence in the device and I can't wait to try running one of my Amigas from a battery, I just need some kind of portable TV to go with it. My two Power Sharks arrived the other day (I think, I haven't unboxed the mysterious package from Poland yet, but I'm pretty sure I know what it is), I think I will give one away as a prize for the next AmiGameJam!

    • @RobSmithDev

      Sounds like an awesome prize! I had mine running for several hours yesterday on battery, I bought a fairly beefy power bank that tells you in hours/minutes how long is left which is handy

      Just as a follow on, one issue I did have was that on my 1200 with vga out where the next to the power, it overlapped the vga a little so had to cut the edge off a vga cable for it to fit

    I've always found that USB PD capable supplies, even the cheap ones, have great power management. you're probably unlikely to run into power issues with a USB PD supply, most of them also have an overcurrent protection.
    also this gives you the option to have a battery powered amiga. get like a portable HDMI monitor and plug the amiga in using an adapter. all powered off a battery bank.

    WTH did they remove the 12v supply option?????? What happens if you use a PD supply with only the 15v profile?

    • @simondick
      @simondick 2 місяці тому +1

      If the PSU doesn’t support 12v output then it won’t power up and will just show a red led

    • @RobSmithDev
      @RobSmithDev  2 місяці тому +2

      It’s less of a problem because the PD3 etc covers that voltage again so works

  • @3osufdh4rfg

    Okay I'm 2:10 into the video and why can't USB ever do anything easy. Like do it properly the first time so you don't have to do another version of the standard shortly after with even more confusing things to remember...

    • @RobSmithDev
      @RobSmithDev  2 місяці тому

      The problem with closed standards…. If this seems bad I’d imagine the WiFi standards are even worse

  • @danielktdoranie
    @danielktdoranie 2 місяці тому +1

    Thanks for making a video. You can buy a reproduction power supply for less and that’s not including the 12 volt USB-C power supply. The power shark feels like a rip off.
