The reasons I watch your channel? 1. You’re living your dream. Few people have the courage to do this. 2. You seem very humble. You aren’t trying to impress, yet are knowledgeable about plants, whitewash and other topics. 3. I love renovations from the regular person’s viewpoint. You show the messes along with the successes. As to confidence…fake it till you make it. That’s what most people are doing.
Well @joannabowers1358 you've inspired me! Widowed a year ago and finally in a position to take the plunge. My husband had cancer for 10 years, so we were stuck here for treatment. I'm 62 today and keep wrestling with my free spirit self against my cautious self. My two grown up kids also reflect those two sides, eldest a worrier and youngest says go for it. All the best x
Wow what a difference a little painting has made. Keep going :-) "I'm not sure whether I would even watch my channel ..." Now that made me tear up a little. Don't worry, you're doing great with your channel. It's actually really easy to see why your channel has grown so much so fast. You're real. That is all. In a You Tube world full of fake, larger than life, dishonest people, you keep doing you and you'll do great. You're a breath of fresh air. Good luck with your appointment.
I must admit your intro blew me away! Not in a million years would I have guessed you are a day older than your mid-20s!!! You are certainly aging gracefully! Thank you for sharing a bit of your background. It’s good to know you have this project well in hand. Good on you! I’m glad I found your channel.!
@anastazjaserce9055 I used Google Translate to read your post. In English, "whitewash" can have a negative connotation (inference). It means covering up something wrong. Almost like putting powder on a corpse!
Was just thinking about when you freshen white paint inside your house and it makes the unpainted areas look dingy and wondering if the whole row will want to paint theirs now. 😂
Came for the lime painting, stayed for the relaxed vibes and down to earth telling. Refreshing to drop out of the showman oneupmanship youtube sphere. I'd go as far as to say you'll probably do better than most Americans in Portugal: you seem to have the right character to enjoy the simple peace and slower pace. Thanks for the video.
Normally when I see renovation videos I get really frustrated because home buyers often just demo everything and waste so much money doing the most! I love that you're really taking your time and making small changes with each video. The simplest, most impactful changes are always the most cost effective. Cleaning and painting the front of your house has just brought it back to life and not a single wall has been torn down! I'm so excited to see the rest of the transformation🤩
What an extremely useful video. Thanks so much, JD. I love that the lime wash is a natural product that allows the building to breathe. We take so much for granted in today's commercialised world. I laughed when you so gently informed everyone of your many, many years of experience and that they needn't worry for your safety. That short introduction tells more about you than you know. Happy to be with you from the start of your Portugal adventure.
As a pro painter I'd say you did a top notch job! Never worked with limestone white wash but have lived in countries were they did. Never too old to learn something new. Looks great man !
It’s always wonderful to see a person like you who is so positive! As a city dweller I find it inspiring to watch you reimagine and restore this rural house. Wishing you every good thing.
It’s very wholesome and endearing that you’re not an overly slick vlogger. And the content is great because it actually feels achievable to do something like this without highly specialized skills. Really enjoying seeing you do it.
I would’ve continued the rust colour all the way down as when it rains you won’t see the dirt splashes on lower half.. most Portuguese houses tend to have a much darker colour on lower half of houses for that reason.. but looks so much better 😊
I was thinking exactly the same thing, I didn't even realise that the bottom was white until you changed colour. It looks beautiful though what a transformation, good job👍👍👍👍
Your Parents must be super Proud of you, what a great job you doing with this House.. to be continue, can’t wait to see all done. PS don’t be afraid of the Camara you doing a great job with it, keep it going..
Just came across this weeks episode and saw you talk about your house in Nicaragua. I actually researched Nicaragua (and a few other countries) and almost bought a house there 10 years ago. But put it off just long enough to realize it wasn't the right spot for me. Oh, I am also from Alaska, born in Anchorage and raised in Fairbanks. Escaped when I was 18 and now rebuilding old houses in Portugal too. Man, it's been fricken hard but nothing is easy. Ok, off to rebuild that attic in the heat. Keep up the great work.
Oh wow, thats amazing, small world! I bought my house there 11 or 12 years ago, but I wish I had looked at other places more. I was considering spain and portugal but didnt even look because I figured its europe so it'll be expensive
What an absolute transformation! and such street appeal ! I am looking forward to the internal makeover !! You are living my dream !!! So inspiring ! and the neighbours must be loving new life being restored to this as well ! a street party looming ! and good luck with the SEF process ❤
I love how you're always smiling, I could watch you talk for hours about anything to be honest. You have such a calming aura, keep making more videos. It's super duper interesting to see the progress you make with the house!
The walls in our backyard when I was a child, were whitewashed, but I never heard of anybody colouring it, I suppose then it would be called redwash!! The house looks so much nicer now and as others have already said, your neighbours will be pleased and might try to keep up with you! Well done.

Great job 👏 It's looking great. Good luck with the meeting. You're brave, adventurous, hardworking and creative and perfect as you are. You are a breath of honest humble fresh air in the online fakery world. 👍

I love your channel! I have a feeling that your channel is going to grow very quickly because you are authentic. Always be yourself. By the way, whenever your videos are interrupted by advertisements, I always watch the entire ad because I know you may get paid for that. It's my way of helping. I am very curious to know what made you decide to move to Portugal? Why did you choose Portugal? Hope you tell us the story one of these days. Greetings from Puerto Rico!
I don't know if he gets paid or not for the commercials, but I watch them, too. June is LGBTQIA+ month in the US, and today's commercials are for an LGBTQIA+ dating site. I watch them through to the end, and just like this video, I'm learning about something I never knew about (like how to come out, etc.). It's a bit like this video. Info I'll never use. However, with this video, I can dream I might one day need to implement the info.

I enjoy learning about your use of appropriate traditional materials for your environment. Whitewash is beautiful, and the simple pigment also looks sharp. I can imagine your new neighbors would be appreciative of your attitude toward the traditional construction.
Lols, Unasked for Internet Advice - welcome to UA-cam. 😂😂 Just remember you get to pick and choose what you listen to. 💖 Love seeing the transformation, it is quite fascinating, thank you for sharing!
What a huge difference a few coats of limewash makes. It takes me back 30 years when I first coated my old stone farmhouse in Ireland, I was scared to use it to begin with. Now I'm an old hand at at using it. I really enjoy seeing old houses come back to life.
While I was expecting a brighter red, I have to agree with you that it goes very well with the roof tiles and that the brighter red would have looked jarring.
Yes, I liked the color better when it was wet but it does go good with everything, and pretty much matched the shade of the original red that was still there

Kudos to you! Cost of living in the Western USA is prohibitive to the point of lost dreams to ever own a home. I see why Americans want to move abroad!
Whitewashing is brilliant. Used all over Europe and, like you said, cheap, safe and easy to create. Stands up well to the climate as well. My dad whitewashed one of our houses in the UK with it. Lasted years and always looked great.
@@bridgwll Because "other people" know nothing about whitewash. It is completely safe. Been used for hundreds of years all over Europe, and still is. Just like "other people" suffocated under useless masks for 2 years during the Covid panic and hysteria, the same "other people" get all kitted out to paint with something my grandparents and other relatives in the UK used again and again with ZERO health risks for generations. And by the way, you might want to actually LISTEN to what he says about his background in painting/renovation/construction etc. and knowing a helluva lot more than you about the necessary precautions. So there's that.
@@bridgwll quicklime, that is unhydrated lime, meaning basically calcium oxide can indeed be dangerous as it is very caustic and can burn. Aside from chemical burn, it also generates a lot of heat in reaction with water, which can mean water from your skin, eyes (ouch!) etc. But JD was not using that (although he has a smaller bag of it). He was using hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide, which is what you get when you "slake" quicklime with water). Slaked lime is much safer, probably safer than regular Portland cement. And when it finishes reacting with air, lime becomes calcium carbonate: what our bones are largely made from, i.e. extremely safe and non-toxic. JD knows what he's doing.
We are used to white wash in The UK especially us oldies. Everything got white washed especially the outside bog down the bottom of the yard [only toilet in the house and often shared with neighbours]. I'm not joking. Prop that manky old mattress in place under where your doing the red painting, your not going to be bothered if that gets more stains it and it will give the guys at the tip something to talk about, they'll think you've murdered someone. lol. Looking good.
❤❤❤ nice job with the white wash👏 and LOVE how gentle the colour turned out for the reddish part😍 It's wonderful to watch your Videos - you and an American Lady, who's renovating a chateau in France, are my favorite at the moment 🤗 And guess why: Because you're both so authentic with the whole process in front of the camera!👍🏻 That's wonderfull and human. Thank you for that.❤️ And the lime wash is just wonderful to see put in action!! I have been researching quite a bit over the past 2 years or so about natural building alternatives and I will DEFINITELY use that simple and most intelligent kind of paint as soon as I get to my own project 🤗🤍 Can't wait to see the next steps with the house!!
Oh, and I forgot to mention: I REALLY hear you about the being older than one thinks aspect... I know it throughout my whole life so far. 😅 sometimes dealing with being treaten like someone much younger requires quite some patience I find... So anyhow, great that you express it so clearly👍🏻😊

Speaking of houses, one of my neighbours painted his house one year. I thought it looked great. Then I noticed that he’d only painted the front! Well, that’s one way to save money…😊
Watching from Brisbane, Australia and you have my upmost respect. I love your attitude and positive outlook. Small steps and the place will come together. Love that lime wash on the outside.
Uma típica casa portuguesa. Muito simples mas está indo muito bem. Aqui no Brasil seguimos as mesmas tradições construtivas. Se precisar de orientação, talvez possa ajudar. Estou feliz com seu progresso, está ficando tudo bom. Agora é adaptar o interior para uso mais prático. Parabéns
JD - you are such a hard worker and such a Zen soul, I love watching your channel and your progress. What a difference that paint job has made! Do you intend to stay in Portugal or will you move on when the house is complete? 🤗
As a painter always do the window frame then the architraves then the walls. Inside; ceiling then woodwork eg, windows trim and doors then wall. It’s Easter to straighten all you lines if you do the wall last.😊
I was just thinking that a video about what worked painting the exterior and what he might have done differently would be interesting. He seems to be a very bright young (compared to me!) man, but no one knows everything. Although he'd done a house before, he may still be learning.
That American obsession with safety is so funny. Do your thing. Enjoy yourself. You're in no danger whatsoever! Your videos are very entertaining and inspiring!

I explained it in the video, im using hydrated lime (safe) not quicklime (needs precautions but still safe)
I would love this little property 😍
We are used to white wash in The UK especially us oldies. Everything got white washed especially the outside bog down the bottom of the yard [only toilet in the house and often shared with neighbours]. I'm not joking. Prop that manky old mattress in place under where your doing the red painting, your not going to be bothered if that gets more stains it and it will give the guys at the tip something to talk about, they'll think you've murdered someone. lol. Looking good.
😂
❤❤❤ nice job with the white wash👏 and LOVE how gentle the colour turned out for the reddish part😍
It's wonderful to watch your Videos - you and an American Lady, who's renovating a chateau in France, are my favorite at the moment 🤗
And guess why: Because you're both so authentic with the whole process in front of the camera!👍🏻 That's wonderfull and human. Thank you for that.❤️
And the lime wash is just wonderful to see put in action!! I have been researching quite a bit over the past 2 years or so about natural building alternatives and I will DEFINITELY use that simple and most intelligent kind of paint as soon as I get to my own project 🤗🤍
Can't wait to see the next steps with the house!!
JD, your videos are so relaxing to watch… do not change a thing! Your house is beautiful. Cheers from Alabama!
Thanks!
Rooting for you and your adorable little home J.D.!
Your house looks lovely and fresh looking now and looks like it’s cared for. I’m interested to see the progress you make with the renovations. Cheers from the northern end of Australia 🇦🇺
Just discovered you, watched all ur vid blogs now...... I hope you get enough revenue to build your much needed tool repository. I'm going to be enjoying watching your progress! X

Looking at your progress it really does seem like you're onto something. This is going to be a sweet place once you're done fixin' er up.
Wow, who knew whitewashing was so inexpensive and so great looking. Perhaps I’ll try it out on my mother-in-law’s pink house (it was supposed to be “cinnamon”). Keep up the great work!
Speaking of houses, one of my neighbours painted his house one year. I thought it looked great. Then I noticed that he’d only painted the front! Well, that’s one way to save money…😊
A very nappy small roller works better on a textured rough surfaces. It pained me to see you work so hard. Good on you for the extra effort!
it wasnt hard at all, very relaxing and meditative actually
Watching from Brisbane, Australia and you have my upmost respect. I love your attitude and positive outlook. Small steps and the place will come together. Love that lime wash on the outside.
Love your journey!
That was both educational and satisfying to watch thanks for sharing.
Looks great. Love reno video's and yours is interesting. Can't wait to see how it goes as you progress. Good luck with immigration.
thanks!
A cal ainda é muito usada em Portugal, da Beira Baixa para sul. Continue com o sru bom trabalho
The exterior painting looks great!!!
thanks!
Uma típica casa portuguesa. Muito simples mas está indo muito bem. Aqui no Brasil seguimos as mesmas tradições construtivas. Se precisar de orientação, talvez possa ajudar. Estou feliz com seu progresso, está ficando tudo bom. Agora é adaptar o interior para uso mais prático. Parabéns
Muito obrigado :)
I feel your channel is going to grow by leaps and bounds. Thanks for sharing your adventure!
Parabens, eu estou adorando a transformacao da sua casa.
Well, done man, I am enjoying it so much the house transformation.
obrigado
Love your channel. It takes great courage to follow your heart and live your dream,
JD - you are such a hard worker and such a Zen soul, I love watching your channel and your progress. What a difference that paint job has made! Do you intend to stay in Portugal or will you move on when the house is complete? 🤗
I intend to stay
What a sweet house. Great job!
As a painter always do the window frame then the architraves then the walls. Inside; ceiling then woodwork eg, windows trim and doors then wall. It’s Easter to straighten all you lines if you do the wall last.😊
Thank you. Wish I'd known this when younger 😂
I was just thinking that a video about what worked painting the exterior and what he might have done differently would be interesting.
He seems to be a very bright young (compared to me!) man, but no one knows everything. Although he'd done a house before, he may still be learning.
Great work man. Love your videos. Keep it up. Hope the SEF thing goes well. Can't wait for you to tackle that door and windows.
That American obsession with safety is so funny. Do your thing. Enjoy yourself. You're in no danger whatsoever! Your videos are very entertaining and inspiring!
You have us confused with the Swedes.
I’ve been meaning to tell you guys for a long time now, and I watch videos from people from all over different areas because I’m not sure which area I love best❤ but I think your videos are the most thorough you show everything and I appreciate that! Keep up the good work and hopefully you’ll show me my new house soon!!❤
