I am a Nepalese too and some higher caste Brahmin families , they have patriarchal culture and women are treated as inferior to men, wives inferior to husbands, daughters inferior to son. Maybe they wanted a son and not a daughter, maybe she was earning more than him, and it hurt his ego. There are so many red flags I can see why the husband and the in-laws abused the poor woman.

How many grannies and grampas out there were beaten and cheated on with children being conceived outside the marriage all because religion says no to divorce. However. The Bible does say one exception is when the spouse is not upholding the biblical duties so for a man they should protect and if they are beating and harming that is the opposite of protection.
