Back in 2007 when Coyotes a gogo was the place, I was walking up to the door and 2 security guards threw a big falang out the door. He yelled and came crashing back into them, in which one security guard punched him and knocked him clean out. This was all within 3 feet of me. They both looked at me, I gave a wai and they wai'd back and let me in. 555. It was probably the most silly use of a wai I've ever done, but it was so fitting it was the first thing that came to my mind. They probably thought I was with him 555. Bit of advice to people- pay your bin. Don't argue, just pay it. Thais national pasttime is kickboxing. You won't win. No sense getting your ass kicked for $30.
I've seen some farang,he's a pretty huge lad muscles and all. And he probably thought so that way and thought he could muscle out without paying his bin. But hey its their turf and soon like 8-10 Thais were kicking and punching him to the ground. Yep all the bouncers from different bars came, they aren't dumb to fight you alone lmao. Drink, have fun and dont be a smart alex while holidaying. Cheers and stay safe all 😀
Number one Dont get involved with thais in bars num 2 drink up and walk away if they try to wind you up num 3 check your bar bin everytime num 4 mind your own buisiness dont get involved nothing to do with you and dont get to drunk
I think that this was a very appropriate subject. Unfortunately, there are still those who will come to Pattaya thinking that they're ten feet tall and bullet proof. I'm 6'2", and once I had a discussion with a security guy outside a club concerning bringing in a few tins of cashews that I'd bought for the staff. His instructions were, "No food from the outside." He was following his orders. He won the discussion. I went in and explained the situation to the mamasan. She brought the food inside, no one lost face, and I'm a well liked customer. On the way out I waied the guard, told him he was a good man, and brought him a small bottle of Jack Daniels the following night. That, dear friends, is how you avoid trouble in Pattaya. Good video, Trev. Thank you.
Your advice is valid anywhere you go. Be polite, pay your bill, be aware of your surroundings, avoid fighting people if you can, and get an agreement on the cost of services before they are performed. Great video.
I find that acting the weaker person by apologising, admitting liability with a friendly smile always gets you out of any situation. Whether in the wrong or right. Job done. Carry on enjoying your holiday.
@@Buzzinpattaya I think we met in about 2010. Did you once use the very basic boxing gym on 3rd Rd? I think it's changed floor's during it's time. Firstly it was on the top/4th floor, then it went to the 3rd. To get there you'd turn right out of Soi Lenke and the gym was about 200 meters past the language school and on the same side.
@@johndean4765 I'd rather enjoy my holiday, than endure a jail sentence. Believe me, I can fight with the best of them, I'm a former boxer. But what is the point of aggro if you can avoid it and find another bar. There's 1000's to choose between.
Hot tip #1, it's saved me a number of times. If you are sitting at a bar (or anywhere), next to a farang stranger that is being disrespectful or ticking off any Thai there... get up and move to another seat. Make it known with a wink and a wai- to the staff- that you are NOT with him/her and NOT their friend. Sometimes they can assume that just because you're sitting next to someone and maybe chatted even a little bit, you are with that person. If and when the boys come in to take care of him, make sure you are not in any way associated. The rest of the staff will have your back. Be proactive and avoid being confused as troublemaker's friend. Jing jing, na.
I think this was one of your best videos ever. Thousands of baht and stitches is never worth an 80 baht beer. I once went outside of a bar to smoke and saw 4 guys gambling and drinking. They looked angry because i was watching them. I just smiled, pointed to my smoke and they were cool and they did their thing and I finished smoking. Best advice to anyone visiting Pattaya, don't get angry. If you feel you are getting angry, tell a mate or just pay and walk off.
Just be kind and generous to your hosts while in a foreign land. Buying someone a drink, spreading the wealth a little and showing respect is ALWAYS better than some time in the hospital.
I’ve always check my bin, then square off at my set amount and start over. It also notifies the staff that your keeping tabs. Always worked a treat over the years in PPI & Thai.
The ‘tone’ of this video was excellent. It was honest, forthright and sobering. I lived in Pattaya for 4 months in 2010 while attending a scuba diving school and learned quite a bit about different cultures and expectations in a vastly different part of the world. There were things I loved about it and things I didn’t. The lesson here? You MUST have 100% respect for where you’re staying. If you don’t?….good luck to you. Cheers.
I'm a mixed race, Asian & English, and not losing the face is a MASSIVE thing for all of the Asian people. It's part of the culture. You are spot on mate Trev.
you call it saving face, its actually emotional immaturity at handling shame.... means they have deep childhood trauma ghat is unsolved..... think about how they would resct of you "lost them face" they would behace like a 10 year old
In my humble opinion, no matter where you are in the world it is safer just to stay under the radar, with the Police, doorman or locals. Basically what goes around comes around. It is not worth the grief, especially if Thai guys get involved!
Great video. Very informative as to just how easily you can get yourself into trouble here in Thailand. I’m back in Pattaya right now and Pattaya was where I nearly came a cropper almost 10 years ago. It was Songkran and outside one of the bars a Thai male was getting an absolute battering off several other Thai men. I honestly thought to try and drag him out from being pummelled was the best thing to do. As I started to drag the lad away from the beating, I was grabbed and dragged into one of the bars and the shutters came down. The guy was Dutch, he owned the bar and shouted at me I was seconds off getting potentially killed by trying to rescue the Thai guy getting a battering. He said they would have all turned on me and I’d have been toast if he hadn’t pulled me out of the situation. I was just trying to do what I thought was the right thing.
Important to remember that in Thailand if you get into an altercation or have some other issue with a native Thai, the odds are 95-1 that the police will not be on your side even if you are in the right. As for streetfighting, when I go on vacation it does not include fighting. Mike Tyson once said "anyone who fights for free is stupid".
I lived in Pattaya for 3 years and whilst I saw only a few incidents I had a situation myself that could have been ugly. I was enjoying a night in the Tahitian Queen and when I checked my bin I saw I had enjoyed my time to much and was short on cash. I spoke to the Mamasan and explained I needed to go to a ATM and said that could she ask someone to escort me so she knows I’ll be back. She got one of the girls to go with me and all completed easily. On my returned paid my bin, bought the girl a lady drink for her trouble slipped the Mamasan 100 baht. All sorted happily and when next time in the bar I had VIP treatment.
Wise words Brother. Pattaya is place to enjoy and a time of your life. Dont get into trouble. If you follow these tips, you will have an unforgettable time in Pattaya.
I've been here for 17 years since I was very young and I can say your advice is very sound. The emphasis you put on staying calm and avoiding confrontation is warranted and as a bloke who has been here and lived that urban party life I always always give the same advice to newcomers. Another one I always tell people is "never ever use Thai swear words". Foreigners myself included won't understand how and when to use swear words at first in Thai culture. F'ng and blinding in Thai with Thai's will almost always be taken as though it's aimed at them. My ten pence there. Great video and you have a new sub.
Very good advice Trevor, got my bin bumped up by a few drinks in a bar on second road one time, a place I drank in everyday for two weeks. When I said they must be mistaken I was told no mistake.I just paid up and went elsewhere and when I used to pass by I would be greeted by why you no drink in our bar anymore? I just kept walking. Rule # 1 avoid confrontation.Rule # 2 avoid confrontation
same for me in Hua Hin. Funny thing is they are too stupid to realise why you are no longer a customer. There's always another bar happy to take your money. 555
Thailand is Essex by the sea, sunburned geezers sporting tattoo's and football shirts leering at money-starved local gals looking for cash - what could possibly go wrong!
You're forgetting the huge numbers of Indians, Russians and Chinese now traveling there, and doing the exact same thing Brits are renowned for. Cracks me up how the English working class stereotype is brought up at every opportunity by the people who would likely help genocide them given the chance. Who created the drinking culture in the UK? The ruling class encouraged it for centuries, part of the bread and circus indoctrination.
I remember having afew on soi 6 at a certain bar and noticed drinks added to my bill, I questioned them politely and got some silly excuse said ok and left, I had been to that bar many times during that stay and never went back, however the next day I went to the other bar opposite that bar and sat at the front smiling and drinking in full view of the staff for the remainder of my visit, now it’s my little tradition every time I’m in town I start off there. Happy days 🎉
Always a good reminder to NOT make a scene and just walk away. It is also important to remember the exchange rate! The Baht bin was 500 Baht more than you thought it should be? Remember that is only about 12 GBP / 13 USD / 18 CAD It is not worth a fight - Jail Time or - Hospital Visit !!! walk away and never go to that place again there are 3 thousand more bars nearby !!
Great advice as usual. I always make it obvious I check each receipt that goes in so they don’t think I am a mug. When it gets full, I will check it and start another bin. Seen too many arguments over bins and as you say you won’t win.
Great advice Trevor. Well spoken. Agree with everything. Always try and find out what the taxi fare will be before you take off. Talk to the driver. In Manila, where I lived for eleven years, I would always ask the taxi driver to turn on the taxi meter before actually entering the taxi. When they refuse I walk away. Lots of times these taxi drivers think you are a tourist. So they can do whatever. So I try to let them know too that I am not a tourist. That I know the place. This is of course you really do. The other note about the bar tabs is true too. Always look at the piece of paper they put inside your little cup or receipt holder. It also lets the one writing up the bills to see that you are checking them. Aware of things. The big problem though is when the guy gets drunk. Then I guarantee you those waitresses and mamason’ are going to take advantage of you being drunk. They love this. When the poor guy gets hammered then isn’t aware of the bills. So they do add on. Then at the end the drunk guy pays them whatever. I have seen this many many times. All over Asia. Not just in Manila. The basic rule is just don’t cause any trouble while in THEIR country. As you said Trevor you are in their country. So it’s their rules. Their laws. Not your’s. Don’t get cocky and think I can do whatever. Because you can’t. You don’t want to spend a few nights inside a foreign jail! No! Plus all the corruption money you will have to pay out just to get yourself out of there! And they will want it. Seeing you as a walking ATM. Stay off their radar. Have fun but sensible too.
Very good to mention all those possible ways to get in trouble. I'm from Germany and I speak some decent Thai. But I can't agree more to what you said. Avoid potential trouble from the beginning!
- I’ve got what could be called Lizard sense, it’s saved me a few times in difficult places - If a scenario feels wrong, it probably is, the best solution is not to be there when it kicks off, an inner alarm goes off and it can happen very quickly, you won’t win so get out of it in the most polite manner possible - also accept that as a foreigner sometimes you will need to pay a bit more - sometimes you do get on the wrong side of paying for a drink, buying something, or a taxi fare - clearly try not to, but it’s not the end of the world, - it’s usually just a few equivalent pounds if even that, think of it as a small tax - and learn from your mistake, - some of the locals are very wiley, getting stung once is ok if embarrassing, they are very good at it - twice is different.
Great video Trev, even if you often repeat this stuff in various videos, it's always a GREAT reminder and awesome for new viewers and tourist coming here! Cheers mate
Hey mate, Thanks for making this video for us. I just moved here from the EU one month ago - and I can honestly say there is SO much to learn. It would be really cool if 1 time each month you could organize a walkabout for us newbies where we pay you for a couple of hours out to learn the ways of this magical city.
Buzz is cool... damn I live in Taiwan and I was just about to come over there then Covid... damn it, damn, damn damn ! faaaaar too long ! like 1987 too long
many info channels about pattaya on youtube. yours is the best. and i am sincere in my judgement..the way you talk explain and mix it up with real life examples is just amazing. it seems easy but it is not. congrats and all the best for you. and thx you for so many trouble you already did help me to avoid :-)
Very solid advice with respect to saying sorry and walking away when in a confrontational situation with a Thai guy. Most of them can break your leg with a single thai kick.
A lot of good advice here. Probably the best one, to avoid a lot of problems later, is to check your drink bin every time a slip is put in it. This does two things. You know how much you have been charged and can keep a running total in your head and it lets all the service staff know that you are checking your tab. Less likely to get a padded bill this way.
I always do that, and I try to do it politely and discretely, but even checking your bin can attract a problem from some bar staff. One particularly unattractive old woman behind the bar asked me "Why you keep checking bin, why you not trust?"
Absolutely sound advice, I've been visiting Thailand for 25 years and couldn't think of better rules to follow. However there are some random situations which just throw you; I was in Suvarnabhumi airport at about midnight waiting at the baggage carousel, I saw my case coming and stepped in to pick it up, and BANG! I was shunted (violently pushed) almost into the baggage carousel. I turned around and there was a Thai bloke quite squat and well built, glaring at me with insane eyes, in complete shock, my mind was racing, WTF do I do? punch him?, slap him? tackle him? (can you imagine what would have happened if a 6' 2" 100 Kg westerner climbed into a small Thai bloke in Bangkok international airport?) I decided to collect my baggage and rage and I quietly followed him out of the baggage hall. To this day I have no idea what it was about, what I did, or whether it was some kind of elaborate scam, but whatever happens, remember, stay alert, keep your wits about you and stay in control of your senses, WHATEVER happens.
I've been going to Thailand since 79. Fortunately I've come across trouble twice and both were pissed up Australians. They were dealt with very strongly, your holiday why do you want to fight. I enjoy your shows no old bollocks you tell it as it is. I agree with all your advice, don't argue if you get tucked up, tough it happens pay and don't go back to the bar its that easy
Completly right. Anyway, the way I keep it with the Bin is, dont let it accumulate.....every so offen pay your bin in between and you keep control......easy as that......for the taxi, its correct, arrange the price beforehand to avoid misunderstandings...regardless of Cab or Mototaxi.
My Rule is try and be home by 2am ,Normally all the really bad shit happens after that .Also totally agree better to walk away as things tend to go down hill very rapid in Thailand
Yep, happened to me at Escape. Called the boss over and nicely said “ i am not that drunk but my friends bin is 800 baht out”, after a brief discussion they then altered the bin.
great advice. my main takeaway is never go to bar areas in Thailand...maybe even Thailand. other countries to visit without having getting beaten up. wtf. thank you for your video!
Best advice I ever got about Thailand was to lower your expectations and raise your tolerance levels, been several times and I live by these simple words
I was in Phuket in 2019 and I seen an intoxicated Western guy walking round spitting on the locals and shouting abuse at them, I couldn't believe what I was seeing, I often wonder how his day ended. Not very well I'd imagine.
Been in Thailand for 20 years. Being polite and street smart has put me in a position where I have never been in a violent situation, and I go out drinking most of the time. I've seen hundreds of people get beat up, arrested, conned, drugged and every other thing that can happen in asia(and lots of other places). In pretty much all of those situations, guys were either way too relaxed about their personal safety(not street smart) or being confrontational/angry to Thais, which is a very bad idea indeed. I still love Thailand and the Thai people. You nailed it in your video as far as advice goes, and the more people that can get educated in advance the better. Nice one.
I guess my passive nature just keeps me out of trouble, but some of the situations you explained are so alien to me. I can't even imagine if someone just bumped into me, becoming so angry to react in a manner that would start a violent conflict. I am in a wheelchair so it is not like, I'm built for rough and tumble anyways. I guess the bar scene would be a common place for these fights, macho dudes with liquid courage. Hope you stay safe out there folks.
Excellent video very informative, at the very least maybe someone will take heed that it's best to have zero conflict with any locals, as arguing or fighting gets you into a much worse situation.
my first time in pattaya I was at a birthday party in a bar, met a nice thai lady ( she was a friend of the birthday girl, not working in the bar). When the bar had to close i told her i wanted to party some more and wanted to go to walking street, she joined me. We did a couple bars on walking street and then she asked me if we would go to one of the famous nightclubs because some of here friends would be there. I was like ok we go there no problem. But i really needed to go to the bathroom, so when we got in i went straight to do my business. When i came back there was a waiter waiting for me with a bin of around 8000bath while i didn't even order 1 drink, she and her friends had ordered alot... I was very upset and told the waiter i didn't order anything, and just walked out. Still believe that was one lucky escape of me, but since then be very carefull when they want to meet friends on a night out!
Checking bin is always a good advice. Even if you are wasted and can't see a goddamn thing, it's better to check the bin and give your lady companion and staff an impression that you are top of things, which makes them less likely to try to padding your bin.
This is great info buddy. It shows you need to show the same respect to everyone out of your country as you do down your local pub else shits happening 😁
Bro, thank you so much for these videos. Some of this may seem like common sense, but it is still worth hearing. Don’t start problems with the locals, if you are scammed pay the bill and never go back, etc. 👍👍
Good advise regarding taxis. I was in India once and hopped on a motorbike just for a very short ride, the guy didn't give a price pretending not to understand but it was such a short trip so I was willing to pay a bit extra since it was such a short trip anyway. At the end of the trip suddenly his comprehension was A1 and he asked for an outrageous sum, something like $20. A big argument ensued and next thing there was a big crowd of Indians around just watching for entertainment. Police came and in the end he backed down but what a ride. Never accept a ride without fixing a price first. And don't forget a price of "it's up to you" is NOT a price.
Thank you very much for this video. Once I was in a bar Soi 7 , surrounded by girls , around 14 PM . I checked the bin after a few drinks and realized I did not had enough money. So i payed all the money I had and promised to come back later ( or day after ) to pay the rest. They agreed with a smile . I told them I was staying at hotel Soi 7 . I came back same day ( after I got to the ATM and came to the bar directly to the cashier and payed the rest of the amount. I was sooo lucky that day . greetz jan belgium
Principle has got me into a lot of fights. But it's also got me out of some too. When I've been willing to stand my ground over something when the other person thought they'd steamroll over me they've been the one to end up walking away. I don't walk away from confrontations myself because it just presents your back as a easy target, but I don't go looking for confrontation either. I think the most blood boiling thing about the situations you described is the fact that the people committing the cons fall back on "you offended my honour", when they get called out. Hard to take the ethic of face seriously from individuals like that when they're simultaneously urinating over it at the same time. Theft, and cons have no honour.
His description of Pattaya sounds like that city that OB1 and Luke visit in Star Wars. You know, the one where Solo gets pursued by one of Jaba's bounty hunters.
Glad I came across your content, mate. Been binging on your videos all weekend 😅 I never manage to chat to many farrangs when I visit Thailand, but you seem like a proper, top man. More power to you, pal ❤
Great video, sir. It is important for visitors to remember, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country that was never colonized. As a result, Thai people are staunch nationalists, and will ferociously defend their country and their people against all comers. Foreigners don't stand a chance if you rile them up. Respect the country and the people, stay out of trouble, and you will find Thailand is an awesome country.
The ''tone'' was great - i worked doors for 27 years in LA , ive seen alot except for a motorcyclist jumping off to join in , now theres commitment to your species and cowardice
So true your advice. I have seen it more than once. A tourist in a 1 on 1 heated argument, and the second it looks like it will overheat, in the blink of an eye several Thai guys pop up out of nowhere, and completely destroy the tourist guy. Not even half a minute later, all you see is that tourist guy laying on the ground. Not a single one of the attackers to be seen. Don't think you're going to be fine cause it's just 1 person in front of you. You are guaranteed to be heavily outnumbered 100% and it will happen so fast you won't notice. It doesn't matter if you are right or not, they see another Thai being threatened, and that's all they need to slap and kick you around like never before.
Hi, Trev, another most instructive vid. and entertaining to boot Say, a good line to use with street-hawkers whom you don't want to buy from, a line that I'm sure you're familiar with, is: 'mai ao khap' (with that first word pronounced as 'my'). I have acquired very little Thai over my multiple visits to the kingdom, but I've found this phrase very useful. (It means something like 'I don't want to buy thanks'). Most importantly, it's quite polite. These traders, who can be very persistent, never get offended and usually walk off straight away. (By the way and as you also know, women saying this need to use kah at the end instead of khap). Keep 'em coming, bloke.
It's really disturbing to hear that the bar I may be visiting is going to try to pull every scam they can on me and then kick my ass if I don't comply. Who needs that?
I don't mean for the video to come across the way perhaps it sounds all you have interpreted I would just want to bring to your attention things that may the word is may possibly go wrong
Checking the bin is key, especially in bars that I don't frequent ... it shows that you are attentive. If there is a question about the charge, I will ask. I have seen some mischarges that have been honest mistakes, no problem. If it is a case of padding, well you catch it sooner than later. If they don't correct it, i will pay without a tip and never go back, as well as spread the word they pad bills. There is a very popular gogo on LK Metro that is know for padding the bill and most locals steer clear of it, unless they have to go in and buy a drink just to show "support."
Well I am in my 50's and I don't drink which I think have saved me a world a trouble. I have never experienced padded bills or any big problems. A few small ones and then I just smile, shake my head, pay up, leave and never to return. It's my holiday and I don't want to waste my time on bullshit.
Great. Video Trev. I 'm planning a trip over to the Land of Smiles, with my buddy (who is a bit of a hot head), and I'm going to sit down with him and make sure that he watches this entire video! It could save us from some unnecessary confrontations. 😂
In 1979 I fell onto the table in a bar in Dunfermline, near Edinburgh, while dancing and pissed. I'm English. There were 12 Scottish men sat around the table. Not a good outlook. After I got up I said, "Looks like I need to get a round of beer". They just clapped as I brought them their pints from the bar.
Good advice. Leave your ego at the airport. No point ruining your holiday over a few dollars even if you are in the right. Violence is not worth the hassle in the end.
While your warnings are well taken, in the 10 years that I was there the only problem I ever had was from a young skin head tourist that said he was going to kick my ass. It didn't happen. Point is that not all the trouble comes from a Thai. JMO
Saw a guy once on my flight home.. the crew had altered the seating so they could get the stretcher he was on into the aisle. 2 paramedics tending to him throughout the 8 hour flight and his head was completely swollen and out of shape.. I would say he had been in a very similar situation to the one you just described..
PRO TIP: Tip the door men, learn their names, shake their hands. Always tip well. If something goes sideways those guys will have your back. This literally saved my life one night. TIP TIP TIP the doormen!
Cool advices! I was in a situation a couple of years back when a Thai young boy approached me for taking me to a place in Patpong in BKK (it wasn't Patpong actually but a nearby street) in morning hours of day light. I tried to avoid him politely but he didn't seem to give up untill I said to him that I'm not going with him.. He started saying fu..k off repeatedly.. I continued on my way and didn't show any attention to what he was saying.. I agree reacting to such situations might end in violance - yes, best way to avoid such ending is to walk away
Like you said Trevor, all farangs are guests over there, and when it comes down to it, the police and everyone else will side with the home team. But I also think about it as if there were a bunch of Thai guys at my local being rude to the staff and treating the females poorly, how would I react? Sometimes it helps to take things from their perspective. Thanks for another great video!
The only issue I ever had while I was in Thailand was with other farangs. I was drinking in a quiet bar in Phuket one time chatting to the girl behind the bar minding my own business when 3 (kinda posh) English girls came in and sat at a high table nearby. I noticed that they were focused on me and not in a friendly way. I could over-hear their conversation and they were essentially saying I was a creep for chatting to the 'prostitute'. They were judging the fuck out of me to the point that I was getting very uncomfortable. I was pretty young at the time (mid-twenties) so it wasn't like I was some old man hitting on a much younger girl. Regardless of that, it was none of their fucking business anyways and they were in the wrong part of the world if they had an issue with the set up there. Anyways, I turned to them and said "I can hear everything ye are saying" and just carried on chatting to the bar girl. Then a few English blokes came in and joined the 3 girls and I could hear them talking about me again. Then one of the blokes walks over to me, stands over me and tells me I need to apologize to the girl for what I said. I asked him what did I say and he said that I looked to them and said "you're next". I was like wtf are you talking about. I told him the situation that I was minding my own business and these girls came in talking about me and judging me and that I told them that I could hear them. I was very composed even though he repeatedly said I needed to apologize to the girl. The situation started getting very tense, like it could kick off at any moment .He eventually realized that he had put himself in a stupid situation where he thought he could bully me and impress the girls at the same time but was met with zero compliance on my part. I'm not particularly hard but am very bull-headed especially when I feel I've been wronged. And I wasn't particularly intimidated by this guy anyways. He returned to his seat and after a bit of time they got up to leave. On their way out the guy actually apologized to me and asked me my name. Turns out that we shared the same fairly unique Irish first name. He ended up buying me a drink before he left. This whole situation was created by 3 twats who should have minded their own business and clearly should not have chosen Thailand as a holiday destination.
Great to hear your experience. This is a nightmare situation where some nasty women create problems for men by lying through their teeth. What happens? Some dumb white knight 'comes to their rescue' and creates even more problems. But you handled it like a pro.
Doesn't really make me want to visit the place if you have to constantly be on the lookout for being scammed or worse. It's also kind of a shame that we support that kind of behavior by continuing the patronize these locales. Anyway, I really appreciate you making this video. Great content as always!
@@asl333 but again this is the point, people keep saying treat people with respect even when they are ripping you off and not treating you with the same respect. Accept it and walk away or face violence. High time preference people. Rip you off for £4 but lose out many more drinks and LDs.
This place is racist as hell. They’ll steal 500 baht from you because your not Thai. And then If you get mad you’re the asshole and will get jumped by 10 guys, and then the cops will crack your nose and arrest you😂
As you all know, Just don't argue with the bar bill, As i did this very politely and yet they yelled at the top of their lungs saying I am wrong trying to get other people involved, So simple lesson as many people has said, Just pay it and never go back
this is really excellent advice.. ANYWHERE that YOU are the :Foreigner:... whether its in London, or Istanbul, or Manilla, or Tokyo, Bucharest... DONT PISS OFF THE LOCALS.... unless you are filthy rich and have bodyguard and enough money to own the local Police.. dont Frag up a local... acquiesce..swallow your pride, toss a few $$$$, and be gone. not have a vacation ruined, or your life ended..
happened to me once when I hired a girl from the bar and took her out. We were walking on the street on our way back to my hotel room. I started to feel stomach cramps. Told her that I’m not feeling well and she should go back. All hell broke loose. She was yelling and screaming. Thai men started to pop out from nowhere. I realized what I needed to do. Without saying a word I took my wallet out, and handed her 2000 baht, the amount we agreed. And off she went, so did the guys. Golden words at 9:30, every foreigner in Thailand should keep that in mind.
Great video Trevor, I'm here on and off over 20yrs, taxi car only meter, taxi motorbike price before riding, bolt taxi app in thailand is the best. Never have any confrontation with a ladyboy/ you will lose, drinks I pay every drink, and if your buying lady drink, make sure she's not getting a shot and a beer, try and avoid caring large bills, count your change, never raise your voice or confront any thai in a bar, but it's usually very safe here
Great advice Trev, but you failed to mention that other drunken farangs are more likely to cause you issues and confrontation. Only twice have I been in a situation with Thais (they can be drunk and sometimes aggressive), but mostly it is aggressive drunken farangs causing trouble.
Agree. In all my travels in Asia including living there too I found that the ones who were most problematic were the other foreigners! Not the locals. The ones too who played the most politics. Everywhere I went in Asia I saw this. To me it’s “less can be more”. In terms of how many and who you hang out with. It’s about quality. Not quantity.
My situation was late at night with motor bike taxi he wanted 300 baht for 40 baht ride we started arguing and he punched me on shoulder i went for him and he jumped on his bike rode off thankfully, point story I’ve been out there for 23 years and should known better it happens to best of us sometimes 😊
I was with the mrs at a Bangkok club and we booked a table and drinks and were dancing quite close . The bouncer didn’t take a liking to me and started becoming quite confrontational. He called his mates and they took me round the back and started beating on me . I tried to fight back but there were too many . I called the police and they did nothing and were on the side of the bouncers . You are right as tourists you are second class they will always support their own Thai people
I'm using BOLT at the moment. Fantastic App. I've seen some guys start trouble on walking street. Being a fellow Brit I advised them not too. Were I then become their target. I walked away but ten minutes after I seen the same lads getting a good kicking with Thai people from everywhere coming to have a go. The other thing I do is take a extra couple of thousand bht out just in case I need it if trouble arises.
The ladyboy thing happened with me in Phuket. I had five of them try to surround me walking back to my hotel. One gripped my arm hard (I'm 6' 225 lbs kickboxer in shape etc). So I knew something was up. Hey baby, this that the other, one reached for my yogurt cannon. I politely said "My wife and baby are at the hotel I have to get back, but you ladies look great tonight" and I smiled big at them. They finally let my arm go. I did not jerk it away, I did not resist. BUT, I knew if I had jerked away I would have been in for a serious fight. I'll bet two of the five of them were former pro fighters, fyi. I can just tell by the way they move. Show respect, but be firm and always smile.
I should also add: It could have ended badly for them as well as I had a dagger on me for situations life/death. I was also detained at the airport for that small dagger. It is 100% illegal in Thailand, even though I bought it on bangla rd and the vendor told me it was 100% legal for foreigners in checked luggage.
Hell, you're scaring the life out of me. I have been to Phuket twice (1990s) but the more I read about life in Thailand today, the less inclined I am to revisit.
I love how you repost the exact same content periodically. This information is crucially important and it's great awareness that not every viewer has been watching your channel long enough to have seen the other ones.
In my 33y of experience in Thailand i never ever got into trouble . I've been at some points where it was close but never got into any trouble . For me , it is like the person itself , you like trouble , well it will find you .
Cheers and stay safe all 😀
Hahahaha brilliant
yeah let them try that on me. none of them can go one to one. losers all of them
Number one Dont get involved with thais in bars num 2 drink up and walk away if they try to wind you up num 3 check your bar bin everytime num 4 mind your own buisiness dont get involved nothing to do with you and dont get to drunk
@@kenji4596 yep good advice.... it's not rocket science !
Thank you.
perfect way for everyone to keep face Travis, the security guard will also remember you as a friend
Nice one mate
So you basically kissed his backside! 555
@@nigelwilliams9307 Always a troll in a crowd. And a cowardly one, too. Go back under your bridge, cowardly troll. No one will hurt you there.
So you bent over for them!😂
Your advice is valid anywhere you go. Be polite, pay your bill, be aware of your surroundings, avoid fighting people if you can, and get an agreement on the cost of services before they are performed. Great video.
Cheers mate
I find that acting the weaker person by apologising, admitting liability with a friendly smile always gets you out of any situation. Whether in the wrong or right. Job done. Carry on enjoying your holiday.
indeed mate
@@Buzzinpattaya I think we met in about 2010. Did you once use the very basic boxing gym on 3rd Rd? I think it's changed floor's during it's time. Firstly it was on the top/4th floor, then it went to the 3rd. To get there you'd turn right out of Soi Lenke and the gym was about 200 meters past the language school and on the same side.
Manos why should you apologise if their in the wrong and your an innocent person .That's grovelling to them if you're honest about it.
Well said
I think this was one of your best videos ever.
Thanks mate
Just be kind and generous to your hosts while in a foreign land. Buying someone a drink, spreading the wealth a little and showing respect is ALWAYS better than some time in the hospital.
Indeed the way mate, well said

It also notifies the staff that your keeping tabs.
Always worked a treat over the years in PPI & Thai.

The ‘tone’ of this video was excellent. It was honest, forthright and sobering. I lived in Pattaya for 4 months in 2010 while attending a scuba diving school and learned quite a bit about different cultures and expectations in a vastly different part of the world. There were things I loved about it and things I didn’t. The lesson here? You MUST have 100% respect for where you’re staying. If you don’t?….good luck to you. Cheers.
Thanks mate and thank you for sharing your experience with us
I'm a mixed race, Asian & English, and not losing the face is a MASSIVE thing for all of the Asian people. It's part of the culture. You are spot on mate Trev.
Cheers
you call it saving face, its actually emotional immaturity at handling shame.... means they have deep childhood trauma ghat is unsolved..... think about how they would resct of you "lost them face"
they would behace like a 10 year old
In my humble opinion, no matter where you are in the world it is safer just to stay under the radar, with the Police, doorman or locals. Basically what goes around comes around. It is not worth the grief, especially if Thai guys get involved!
So true mate
@@Buzzinpattaya Thanks!
Thanks mate
Important to remember that in Thailand if you get into an altercation or have some other issue with a native Thai, the odds are 95-1 that the police will not be on your side even if you are in the right. As for streetfighting, when I go on vacation it does not include fighting. Mike Tyson once said "anyone who fights for free is stupid".
Thanks for sharing
Great comment mate thank you for sharing your experience with us
Wise words Brother. Pattaya is place to enjoy and a time of your life. Dont get into trouble. If you follow these tips, you will have an unforgettable time in Pattaya.
Thanks mate
I've been here for 17 years since I was very young and I can say your advice is very sound. The emphasis you put on staying calm and avoiding confrontation is warranted and as a bloke who has been here and lived that urban party life I always always give the same advice to newcomers. Another one I always tell people is "never ever use Thai swear words". Foreigners myself included won't understand how and when to use swear words at first in Thai culture. F'ng and blinding in Thai with Thai's will almost always be taken as though it's aimed at them. My ten pence there. Great video and you have a new sub.
Thank you very much my friend
Very good advice Trevor, got my bin bumped up by a few drinks in a bar on second road one time, a place I drank in everyday for two weeks. When I said they must be mistaken I was told no mistake.I just paid up and went elsewhere and when I used to pass by I would be greeted by why you no drink in our bar anymore? I just kept walking. Rule # 1 avoid confrontation.Rule # 2 avoid confrontation
same for me in Hua Hin. Funny thing is they are too stupid to realise why you are no longer a customer. There's always another bar happy to take your money. 555
Wow thanks for sharing this
This is good advice for the whole of thailand , not just Pattaya !
Thanks mate
Thailand is Essex by the sea, sunburned geezers sporting tattoo's and football shirts leering at money-starved local gals looking for cash - what could possibly go wrong!
hahahaha love that
You're forgetting the huge numbers of Indians, Russians and Chinese now traveling there, and doing the exact same thing Brits are renowned for.
Cracks me up how the English working class stereotype is brought up at every opportunity by the people who would likely help genocide them given the chance.
Who created the drinking culture in the UK? The ruling class encouraged it for centuries, part of the bread and circus indoctrination.
Discrimination is a son of a bitch 😂😂😂
I remember having afew on soi 6 at a certain bar and noticed drinks added to my bill, I questioned them politely and got some silly excuse said ok and left, I had been to that bar many times during that stay and never went back, however the next day I went to the other bar opposite that bar and sat at the front smiling and drinking in full view of the staff for the remainder of my visit, now it’s my little tradition every time I’m in town I start off there. Happy days 🎉
Cheers mate
Always a good reminder to NOT make a scene and just walk away.
It is also important to remember the exchange rate! The Baht bin was 500 Baht more than you thought it should be? Remember that is only about 12 GBP / 13 USD / 18 CAD It is not worth a fight - Jail Time or - Hospital Visit !!! walk away and never go to that place again there are 3 thousand more bars nearby !!
Well said mate
I generally just keep my head down and be polite, usually works everywhere
Absolutely my friend
Great advice as usual. I always make it obvious I check each receipt that goes in so they don’t think I am a mug. When it gets full, I will check it and start another bin. Seen too many arguments over bins and as you say you won’t win.
Yeah good system mate
@@Buzzinpattaya thanks loving the channel. I feel I must get back soon👍
Have fun but sensible too.
cheers mate thanks for sharing
Very good to mention all those possible ways to get in trouble. I'm from Germany and I speak some decent Thai. But I can't agree more to what you said. Avoid potential trouble from the beginning!
Cheers mate
Cheers mate

Very solid advice with respect to saying sorry and walking away when in a confrontational situation with a Thai guy. Most of them can break your leg with a single thai kick.
Gotcha mate
A lot of good advice here. Probably the best one, to avoid a lot of problems later, is to check your drink bin every time a slip is put in it. This does two things. You know how much you have been charged and can keep a running total in your head and it lets all the service staff know that you are checking your tab. Less likely to get a padded bill this way.
Thanks mate and yeah as you said
I always do that, and I try to do it politely and discretely, but even checking your bin can attract a problem from some bar staff. One particularly unattractive old woman behind the bar asked me "Why you keep checking bin, why you not trust?"
@@nigelwilliams9307 tell her you trust BUT verify
Wow thanks for sharing your experience with us mate

I enjoy your shows no old bollocks you tell it as it is. I agree with all your advice, don't argue if you get tucked up, tough it happens pay and don't go back to the bar its that easy
Spot on mate
Completly right. Anyway, the way I keep it with the Bin is, dont let it accumulate.....every so offen pay your bin in between and you keep control......easy as that......for the taxi, its correct, arrange the price beforehand to avoid misunderstandings...regardless of Cab or Mototaxi.
gotcha mate
Ever since I've seen this video I'm constantly checking the bins too.
Cool
My Rule is try and be home by 2am ,Normally all the really bad shit happens after that .Also totally agree better to walk away as things tend to go down hill very rapid in Thailand

I was in Phuket in 2019 and I seen an intoxicated Western guy walking round spitting on the locals and shouting abuse at them, I couldn't believe what I was seeing, I often wonder how his day ended. Not very well I'd imagine.
I would say not well lol
Nice one.
Nice one mate thank you for sharing
I guess my passive nature just keeps me out of trouble, but some of the situations you explained are so alien to me. I can't even imagine if someone just bumped into me, becoming so angry to react in a manner that would start a violent conflict. I am in a wheelchair so it is not like, I'm built for rough and tumble anyways. I guess the bar scene would be a common place for these fights, macho dudes with liquid courage. Hope you stay safe out there folks.
Always best to walk away
@Gordon Gekko Because the bar girl doesn't love u that much 🤣😂😆
You are absolutly right! Let's hope Tourists etc take note! Life can be so much easier if you use your good sense!

my first time in pattaya I was at a birthday party in a bar, met a nice thai lady ( she was a friend of the birthday girl, not working in the bar).
Crazy some of the stunts they try to pull
Checking bin is always a good advice. Even if you are wasted and can't see a goddamn thing, it's better to check the bin and give your lady companion and staff an impression that you are top of things, which makes them less likely to try to padding your bin.
Yeah better to be safe than sorry
This is great info buddy. It shows you need to show the same respect to everyone out of your country as you do down your local pub else shits happening 😁

And don't forget a price of "it's up to you" is NOT a price.
wow glad the police helped you out

Gotcha
exactly
I've been binge watching these videos. His advise is specifically for Pattaya but it seems that 90% is just good life advice anywhere.

His description of Pattaya sounds like that city that OB1 and Luke visit in Star Wars. You know, the one where Solo gets pursued by one of Jaba's bounty hunters.
Glad I came across your content, mate. Been binging on your videos all weekend 😅
I never manage to chat to many farrangs when I visit Thailand, but you seem like a proper, top man. More power to you, pal ❤
Welcome aboard!
I’ve been going to Pattaya since 1990 and very rarely seen any trouble but when it does start it always ends badly for the farang.

Thank mate and thanks for your comment...
The ''tone'' was great - i worked doors for 27 years in LA , ive seen alot except for a motorcyclist jumping off to join in , now theres commitment to your species and cowardice
Well said mate and yeah likewise see some funny shit over they years man alcohol has a lot to answer for hahaha
As you said mate
A very useful phrase and as ya say just be polite
Exactly mate, has to be done everytime
Well I am in my 50's and I don't drink which I think have saved me a world a trouble. I have never experienced padded bills or any big problems. A few small ones and then I just smile, shake my head, pay up, leave and never to return. It's my holiday and I don't want to waste my time on bullshit.
Fair play mate
Good Video. People need this advice to avoid trouble.
Cheers mate
Great vlog this. I think it's common sense to walk away from any awkward situation when you're in a foreign country.
Indeed mate
Great. Video Trev. I 'm planning a trip over to the Land of Smiles, with my buddy (who is a bit of a hot head), and I'm going to sit down with him and make sure that he watches this entire video! It could save us from some unnecessary confrontations. 😂
Honestly if he doesn't keep a cool head he will spend most of his holiday either in hospital or in the holding cells......
Ive spent 12 months in Thailand in total. Always treated the Thias with the upmost respect and never had any bother
Fair play mate
In 1979 I fell onto the table in a bar in Dunfermline, near Edinburgh, while dancing and pissed. I'm English. There were 12 Scottish men sat around the table. Not a good outlook.
After I got up I said, "Looks like I need to get a round of beer". They just clapped as I brought them their pints from the bar.
Nice one mate
oh you mean act like a normal person and be okay.....woooow amazing
Am loving your sarcasm, your full of joys ain't ya lol
Good advice. Leave your ego at the airport. No point ruining your holiday over a few dollars even if you are in the right. Violence is not worth the hassle in the end.
Well said
I usually pay my bin off at least twice then start a new bin as I was padded a few times when first there...
Good system mate
Good advice. Thanks.
I was last in pattaya 5 years ago. Male waiters in the WS bars were usually aggressive and confrontational.
Gotcha mate
While your warnings are well taken, in the 10 years that I was there the only problem I ever had was from a young skin head tourist that said he was going to kick my ass. It didn't happen. Point is that not all the trouble comes from a Thai. JMO
Yeah sadly it happens
Saw a guy once on my flight home.. the crew had altered the seating so they could get the stretcher he was on into the aisle. 2 paramedics tending to him throughout the 8 hour flight and his head was completely swollen and out of shape.. I would say he had been in a very similar situation to the one you just described..
It is such a shame when this kind of situation happens especially when the real answer is just walk away with a smile and live to tell the tale
My first guess would be scooter accident, then drunken bar fight.
PRO TIP: Tip the door men, learn their names, shake their hands. Always tip well. If something goes sideways those guys will have your back. This literally saved my life one night. TIP TIP TIP the doormen!
Knowing the door staff is always an advantage
Cool advices! I was in a situation a couple of years back when a Thai young boy approached me for taking me to a place in Patpong in BKK (it wasn't Patpong actually but a nearby street) in morning hours of day light. I tried to avoid him politely but he didn't seem to give up untill I said to him that I'm not going with him.. He started saying fu..k off repeatedly.. I continued on my way and didn't show any attention to what he was saying.. I agree reacting to such situations might end in violance - yes, best way to avoid such ending is to walk away
Wise move mate fair play
Like you said Trevor, all farangs are guests over there, and when it comes down to it, the police and everyone else will side with the home team. But I also think about it as if there were a bunch of Thai guys at my local being rude to the staff and treating the females poorly, how would I react? Sometimes it helps to take things from their perspective. Thanks for another great video!
Spot on mate
Handled brilliantly mate respect to that..... I hate those who snigger and judge, that are clueless
Silly bitches, what the fuck did they expect coming to Pattaya?!
Great to hear your experience. This is a nightmare situation where some nasty women create problems for men by lying through their teeth. What happens? Some dumb white knight 'comes to their rescue' and creates even more problems. But you handled it like a pro.
@@28pbtkh23 thanks, bro
Prayers and condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the shooting rampage. It’s truly heartbreaking when someone targets children.
Totally 100% with you
Doesn't really make me want to visit the place if you have to constantly be on the lookout for being scammed or worse. It's also kind of a shame that we support that kind of behavior by continuing the patronize these locales. Anyway, I really appreciate you making this video. Great content as always!
there should be a gallery of shame for these scamming bars... or at least pass word around to avoid the place.
No mate come.over, all I was doing was showcasing what can happen and how, doesn't mean it will.
@@mikejohnson2638 there is the contradiction and hypocrisy, treat people with respect but also it’s always your fault.
And then If you get mad you’re the asshole and will get jumped by 10 guys, and then the cops will crack your nose and arrest you😂
Wow you really respond to a lot of comments. Definitely subscribing and thanks for your time.
Cheers mate and welcome to the channel
Excellent insight on how to conduct yourself, very well explained. If I ever get over there’s a drink in it for you. Cheers
Thank you very much
As you all know, Just don't argue with the bar bill, As i did this very politely and yet they yelled at the top of their lungs saying I am wrong trying to get other people involved, So simple lesson as many people has said, Just pay it and never go back
Pay and walk away
They do that to escalate the problem and turn the tables on u.
this is really excellent advice.. ANYWHERE that YOU are the :Foreigner:... whether its in London, or Istanbul, or Manilla, or Tokyo, Bucharest...
DONT
PISS OFF
THE
LOCALS....
unless you are filthy rich and have bodyguard and enough money to own the local Police..
dont Frag up a local... acquiesce..swallow your pride, toss a few $$$$, and be gone. not have a vacation ruined, or your life ended..
Cheers mate
happened to me once when I hired a girl from the bar and took her out.
Wow what an experience
You did promise her right. So what did you expect..they are working!!!!
@@effewe2 Fair point. But I didn’t know the hoe rules back then.
I think all this advice could save anyone in many situations. Many thanks for the advice.
Cheers mate
Check bin every half a dozen drinks or so
Great video Trevor, I'm here on and off over 20yrs, taxi car only meter, taxi motorbike price before riding, bolt taxi app in thailand is the best.
Never have any confrontation with a ladyboy/ you will lose, drinks I pay every drink, and if your buying lady drink, make sure she's not getting a shot and a beer, try and avoid caring large bills, count your change, never raise your voice or confront any thai in a bar, but it's usually very safe here
Thanks for sharing
Common sense is the first rule , if looking for trouble you will find it , no matter what the case might be , walk away is the best answer .
Well said mate
Great advice Trev, but you failed to mention that other drunken farangs are more likely to cause you issues and confrontation. Only twice have I been in a situation with Thais (they can be drunk and sometimes aggressive), but mostly it is aggressive drunken farangs causing trouble.
Yeah fair one mate
Thats very true.
Yeah I get ya mate, as ya said luckily it didn't escalate
Sound advice, not just for Thailand, but anywhere.
Thanks mate
We used bolt after listening to you it's the best app ever thank you
Welcome mate
I was with the mrs at a Bangkok club and we booked a table and drinks and were dancing quite close . The bouncer didn’t take a liking to me and started becoming quite confrontational. He called his mates and they took me round the back and started beating on me . I tried to fight back but there were too many . I called the police and they did nothing and were on the side of the bouncers . You are right as tourists you are second class they will always support their own Thai people
So sorry to read this mate
did you try contacting your embassy, maybe they can help?
I'm using BOLT at the moment. Fantastic App.
I've seen some guys start trouble on walking street. Being a fellow Brit I advised them not too. Were I then become their target. I walked away but ten minutes after I seen the same lads getting a good kicking with Thai people from everywhere coming to have a go.
The other thing I do is take a extra couple of thousand bht out just in case I need it if trouble arises.
Bolt is great mate
It is 100% illegal in Thailand, even though I bought it on bangla rd and the vendor told me it was 100% legal for foreigners in checked luggage.
nicely handled
Hell, you're scaring the life out of me. I have been to Phuket twice (1990s) but the more I read about life in Thailand today, the less inclined I am to revisit.
I love how you repost the exact same content periodically. This information is crucially important and it's great awareness that not every viewer has been watching your channel long enough to have seen the other ones.
Yeah I look a what I did a year ago
In my 33y of experience in Thailand i never ever got into trouble . I've been at some points where it was close but never got into any trouble . For me , it is like the person itself , you like trouble , well it will find you .
Good on you mate fair play
