Definitely a dehydrator
Hiii
I've said it before and I'll say it again... Katelyns editing gets better all the time and I love where its going!
They have an editor now lol
I was about to say they hired an editor hahahaha
They said on stream the other day that the gaming video editors are now doing more videos on the main channel than Katelyn.
Ohhh that explains the lack of “1 sleep later”! I thought Kaitlin‘s editing was hilarious!
@@DannyDevitoOffical-TrustMeBro that makes sense. I was thinking something was different
I 100% agree with your findings and also suspected a dehydrator. It’s so great seeing it actually compared to one. We had similar conclusions BUT one of the things I noticed with longer molds is that this machine’s trays warp so the resin is uneven after being cured. So bubbly AND lop-sided 🥲 also, I forgive our beef. Y’all too cute to stay salty at.
I’m grateful for the beef as it led us to Evan & Katelyn Channels! So thanks @nerdecrafter for mentioning it in your video!!
What I liked about both yours and Evan & Katelyn's videos is that they both go over different aspects of the machine. Theirs went over more of the temperature and how it works with the resin, and what I remember of yours is that you went into more of the logistics and how the molds fit. Everybody wins! Thank you for both your reviews!
Yessss, BEEF (my cats version of HAM). This is the content I have been needing
Good point about long molds! So many things to be infuriated at...
NerdECrafter, Even & Katlyin, Moriah Elizabeth, and jazz need one larg art collaboration. It would we so freaking amazing just imagine all of u with all ur different talents all in one room working on one giant experiment!!!!
I love how Evan's first thought is like "This is a repackaged dehydrator. "
Honestly, that was my first thought too.
love the new "cheap vs expensive" spinoff: "cheap vs. expensive thing that'd lying about itself"
At the beginning I was like "so, this is a buy vs. buy?" 😂
Allegedly
Speaking of/related to thermal runaway, Peter Brown accidentally discovered a combination of resin and dye that reacted with each other to generate heat and cause some especially violent thermal runaway. It bubbled so much it looked like lava rock when it cured.
Love him he’s the best
They should totally try to recreate that reaction, also a E&K and Peter Brown collab would be delightful
Which video was that? I can't find it 😭
@@bryonymason3104 resin lava bowl iirc
That was cool. I love PB
Obviously I don’t know what you guys are like off-camera, but I feel like Evan’s indignation over the likelihood of the machine’s being a scam is the most genuine possible reaction. 😂 He was less mad when he fell through the ceiling and it’s so relatable.
I just had the WILDEST idea after Evan said "It's cutting my fingers, perfect!" and honestly I'm unsure how you haven't attempted it before. Hear me out, two words. Resin SWORDS.
And I know you did the Minecraft diamond swords but I mean like ACTUAL short swords that can cut things. The design possibilities are endless and you could even embed wireless lights into them if you wanted like the dice. I just hope they're durable enough not to break but you never know until you try!
Worst case scenario you could also do resin daggers if it fails
Edit: I know about the knives, but that's just a regular ol' kitchen knife. Swords are way cooler. And bigger.
Thank you regardless for the reminder though since others advocating might also be interested and don't know!
They did do resin knives though i would love to see swords
Whoaaa I wanna see this done.
They did small knifes. And I think they accomplished it pretty well
Please! these would be so cool. I’m thinking like a scimitar
I believe the channel NordForge has done this! It turned out super cool, would love to see E&K working on a collection!
Note: please do NOT use the dehydrator that you used for resin for food! It will make you sick because chemicals from the resin will get in your food. Also loved Evan’s proposal very romantic lol 😆
Considering their very cautious about this sort of thing usually, I’m sure they won’t be using it for food beyond this point.
as long as you let it cure completely and remove the resin, it will be non toxic (i think, i dont really know, but once resin cures it is non toxic)
Evan totally zoning out and spinning in the chair but managing to still keep track of the conversation is exactly how I am like 98% of the time!! 😂
One of the main skills every husband needs.
It’s because of the two of you that my mother and I got into resin. From 1 Texan to another, thank you! I’ve spent 45 years trying to find a craft that excites me, and the two of you have helped me find it.
that's awesome to hear!
Remember to be careful!
I saw another creator who makes MASSIVE resin sculptures bought a chest freezer and he puts way to deep pours in it with minimal cooling on amd it cures perfectly (he does it to get rid of layer lines)
Oh Blake McFarland, I love his videos, he’s an amazing artist. He was great on season 3 of Making It.
@@maplelump thanks couldnt remember his name
@@alphamuplays1669 I’m not a super fan or anything, his videos came up on recommended, and I ended up binging them the other day 🤣
I love Evan’s “doing things wrong” horns as a cautionary signal, and the editing on this video was phenomenal!
It is irrelevant but could you place a blender, mixer or rotor below surface level and let it run during curing. Can you capture spiralling flow? Will it stop almost suddenly? Will mixing make the reaction faster or wont affect the speed? Will partially solid chunks crashed again?
And one more idea, could you guys do a frozen in time lava lamp only using resin? Even you are bombarded with ideas and wont do any of these, Thanks for the videos, i enjoy every single one of them.
I've also just wanted to see them MAKE a lava lamp for a while and idk why 😂
I love the idea of a frozen time lava lamp! That’s a genuinely cool idea and I’m sure they could figure some way out to make that!
Some mini lava lamp fridge magnets/stained glass/enamel pin-type lamps would be super cute! And give plenty of opportunities for color variety or small scale tests.
it would be cool to try with one of those magnetic stirring bars
i would assume the thickness gets progressively higher until the thing doing the movement stops then it settles for the final cure.
i really want you guys to make something with all the test cubes you’ve made over the years
I doubt they kept them.
@@carlotta4th they do. they have the "gem" hoard if I recall
Frankenresin frankencubes. Calling Safiya lol
Please do!
Jackie released a video about the resin curing machine first, but your videos cover quite different things! Hers was about the size and shape of molds that you could use and yours was "is this just a re-packaged dehydrator?" I think they're both very worthwhile videos to have. No salt, only synergy!
I've seen a few people try this machine out and it's been pretty obvious to everyone that it's just an overpriced dehydrator. I could overlook the price if it was modified to work well specifically for resin, but it clearly wasn't! The flexible trays that don't allow for anything but pretty small molds, the lack of materials that would make it easy to clean resin off of, the inconsistent temperature within it while running, it just seems like a fail. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to shop for a dehydrator...😏
I love when people admit mistakes and show learning from them. So so important!
you guys should totally try to make stuff out of the semi cured resin like that ring Evan made, you could make much more organic and improvised shapes. Maybe pour a big thin tray and before its fully hardened pull it out and drape it over a bowl, cut strips of it and layer them into a sculpture idk just sounds cool lol
It wouldn't ever fully cure though. No different than sculpting with silly putty.
@@carlotta4th I dont see why it wouldnt? the ring seemed to
They did bendy resin lamps a while back!
@@frejacriesvarg8396 OH THATS RIGHT gosh that was years ago now lol
@@carlotta4th That's not true, there's nothing special about a mold to make resin cure. If you pour resin on a table instead of into a mold it will still cure, that's why one of resin's main home uses (before crafting with it became cool) was bar tops. I'm sure the layer E& K spread on the toilet seat was MUCH thinner than a bowl and it obviously cured fine.
When I bought a resin machine I thought it was a dehydrator 😂 I'm so happy I'm not alone
Coming from a bartender and a resin enthusiast. Lol didn't know my dehydrator would be so diverse. But. But but! Don't put anymore fruit leather or fruit or meats in that after your resin has been there hahah get 2 cheap ones. One safe for food and one for them projects! Thanks so much for this! Watched Jackie's vid too and was so happy to see this collaboration But not colab hahah cheers guys!
That music during the thermal runaway was so dramatic!! And yes Katelyn is scary when shes hungry!
The problem with the cheap $30 dehydrators is you get what you pay for. I got one for dehydrating 3D printing filaments (instead of the PrintDry system). After a few months of use, the fan started making noise like the bearings were worn out, and the plastic in the base of the dehydrator was starting to get the off-color cooked color. I then spent a bit more (closer to $100 I think, still cheaper than PrintDry) to get one of the ones that have a front door and metal racks. It has been a beast and hasn't given me any problems (though the interface could be a bit better).
Most dehydrators with plastic casings tend to not last too long. For sure get the metal ones that look like ovens. They're usually twice as expensive, but I can almost guarantee that they last on average way more than twice as long.
I've seen this machine in other videos too and at first I thought it looked like a dehydrator. so I bought a cheap, used dehydrator and now use it as a curing agent. i put a silicone mat in it and it works great
Mennyi ideig szárítod benne a gyantatat és hány fokon?
I thought it looked a lot like a dehydrator, the first time I saw one of these. It wouldn't be the first time things used outside of art and crafting world for other stuff are rebranded to catch the people who prefer their gadgets mint coloured, with a bigger pricetag. Usually, when I consider buying something craft related, I check the hardware stores first.
And the art stuff is always more expensive. Bought my mom a cake tool kit one holiday. Went to the boat store to buy my dad a cushion for his boat. I saw the exact same toolkit in a different color for a fraction of the price.
@@stevenpuckitt212 To be fair, the cake tools, since they come in contact with food, have to be submitted for testing (in the US at least) for heavy metals and can only be coated with food grade oils for storage. That's why the Cricut explicitly calls out that you can't cut fondant or the edible picture paper in it, the blades aren't rated safe.
It's like trying to compare silicone that's for your bathtub and the stuff used for candy molds, or worse when the fake Dr's inject people who want butt lifts with industrial silicone instead of medical grade and they die.
Meanwhile anyone coating boat tools with food grade oils (which wash off way to easy) is going to have a nasty surprise...
@@mwater_moon2865 In this case it was just the storage container though.
@@stevenpuckitt212 It was a food grade cake kit at the boat shop?
Well then, you've just found the "pink tax" where women's products cost more than men's based on branding.
@@mwater_moon2865 you aren't cooking with the plastic housing container. It was just a variation of a tackle box marketed as a cake tool kit holder. The only difference was the color. Possibly pink tax for sure. DIY and art stuff in general always costs more even when they're the same product with a different sticker slapped on the packaging.
I didn’t get through all the comments, but hearing “take me out to the ballgame” during Katelyns explanation of the tests they were going to do, caught me off guard lol
Was looking to see if anyone else was talking about this!! Cracked me up, so random
Watching this test I couldn't help but think, "You could make an amazing, custom Scrabble board and tiles!" It was when you started to demold the thinner layer of resin, that I got that idea. 🙂
I love how Evan looks at Katelyn while she's explaining on the background.
That's couple goals right there.
Keep up the awesome stuff guys, love ya ❤️
I love the royalty-free "take me out to the ball game" background music at 8:20
The shine on Katelyn’s Teeth was such a nice touch to the part!
I love the take me out to the ball park music during Katelyn explaining the process 😁
You guys have no idea how happy I was to hear the piano music at the beginning of the video! Classic Evan and Katelyn shall rise! 😂😁
Lmao me and my boyfriend were watching this and we realized that you guys haven't done resin rings yet. seems like a awesome cool idea for you guys cause you could make galaxy rings and ocean ring, all kind of combinations that you could gift each other and maybe sell on your website.. could be profit ;P
Would be amazing to see them make one for one another!! Good idea :)
I just want to tell you both how much I absolutely adore your relationship, your science know-how, your sense of humour, and everything that you do. I truly adore you two.
I have a lil’ idea for a resin project(s)
Maybe flower-press jewelry; flowers put in resin and carved into rings or necklace pieces.
Another idea: Resin legos; you mentioned it in one of your older videos that you wanted to make resin legos and I kinda want to see that
Another *another* idea: resin phone case! Why? Why not.
Resin SANDALS (or just shoes in general)
Or maybe a resin dome for Joob so you can see her inside!
I love that content creators acknowledge each other. Maybe someday you could do a proper colab with Jackie. I love both of your channels. I missed the Twitter rant....but I did hear about it. 🤓
That's the same thing involving the hash making washers. They repackage it, slap a pot leaf on it and charge 2x the price when in reality it's just a dorm/rv/table top washing machine lol.
Katelyn: explaining
Evan in the chair spinning: 🙃🙂🙃🙂🙃🙂
I love you guys thank you for the years of content!!
Both hilarious and informative! Also, I love how you guys show us the screw ups and oversights in the process. It helps normalize how many "fails" go into trying a new hobby or a new technique.
The editing is IMMACULATE !!!!
Congratulations on your engagement. I'm sure you'll be very happy together. 😇
Just started watching this and after very quick Google Lens search I found the same "curing machine" (in different color) for $65 🤣
I've used a dehydrator to speed up my resin curing. Now I use my toaster oven, as it has a dehydrator setting. I also use it to bake tumblers for sublimation.
TLDW: YES, a resin curing machine is a ripoff. Resin is cured by chemical reactions, thus the only external catalyst is going to be heat. All you need to do is go to walmart and buy a cheap 30$ toaster oven, and only use the warm settings. Some of them even come with convection options, like mine, and cost 45$. Just DO NOT use the toaster oven for food after you've used it for resin. Also, if you heat water in a bowl and place the container you're mixing into it, you can warm the resin can make it cure faster this way, too. This works if you're trying to get a particular pattern, but your resin has a long working time. The resin I use has a 40 mins working time, which can give enough time for patterns to spread and mush out. If you're pouring a solid shape, like a small cat figure, this is a good way to get many pieces in a short time. It also thins the resin in the beginning, which can help with degassing. This is since the thinner liquid has a lower surface tension and viscosity, allowing bubbles to rise and come out more easily.
hi i just wanted to say thank you for putting closed captions on every video, because of that i can share this channel with my friend who is deaf ♥
Never thought I’d enjoy dehydration machines repurposed as much as I did.
I'm impressed with your honesty and scientific integrity. Would be interesting to know the exact time it took in the dehydrator.
Man, now I desperately need a video creating little sculptures out of half cured resin, like cursed clear clay 🙏🙏🙏🙏
As long as it wouldn’t be too dangerous or anything
I appreciate they included their errors rather than just cutting it out and not showing it all together. Thank you. We learned too!
Evan: It’s nice and sharp, it’s cutting my fingers, perfect!
CRAZY RESIN IDEA!
I was thinking to myself... wouldn't it be awesome to have resin crown molding? Make one big mold and make as many panels you need. You wouldn't be able to nail it in, so connecting it might be an issue.
I have too many crazy ideas.
I totally agree with Evan at then beginning (haven't finished the whole vid yet). But to be fair to the machines, my instant pot makes that same beep too @2:10
It's the "I'm a kitchen appliance" beep.
Y’all inspire me to do resin projects in the future 🤍 when the income arrives I’m gonna do something
I wonder if you put the pieces in the pressure pot first to get rid of bubbles and then in the dehydrator what would happen?
That's not how the pressure pot works.
The pressure pot doesn't remove the bubbles, it just compresses them and therefore they are barely visible.
But that only works if the resin cures under pressure. If you release the pressure before the resin is cured the bubbles will expand to the same size as before.
Dehydrators are often easy to find at thrift stores, too. 😊
THANK YOU!!!! I was thinking of getting this machine to use for my channel, but because I'm not monitized yet due to not enough watch hours, I couldn't justify it. A food dehydrator tho? That is DEF in the budget! Thanks Evan and Katelyn!! 💙💙
1) dehydrated Spam cubes are so good.
2) Katelyn's reaction to the proposal has such Mabel Pines from Gravity Falls energy. 😂😂
Hold up.... I have to know, are the Spam cubes hard or squishy?

I love that you guys crack me up while I learn something…it’s a great combo
I would like to see a video all about molding partially-cured resin!
a couple years ago they did a video with bending partially cured resin to make a lamp!
@@conribarnes1373 you're right! I forgot about that one. I think it could really be expanded on to get unique shapes.
I could see a use for dehydrators curing resin in fast turn around stuff AND when you add glitter etc to resin. You'd probably want to also run the resin through a vacuum chamber first though.
The romance-y times at the end... indeed you are THAT type of channel! hahaha!!
Completely totally agree! The resonator was originally 120 for only three shallow shelves also and if you didn't get ahold of them and get in their list to get the three free deeper shelves, oh well. I did and still never was contacted. I reached out to the company and also told them that the buttons don't work all the time. Because I had the machine over 30 days, oh well. But I got the 3 free deeper trays.. but so many projects got messed up and need a lot of work and some can't be fixed. Waste of money and resin.
Evan at 7:50 is such a mood tbh
As someone from outside US, big thanks for throwing in Celcius numbers whenever you guys talk about temperature!

that would be fun to try!
@@EvanAndKatelyn how about the gummy from Simpson if you can find that
I love how it's great you test it all out so we others can learn from you and minimalize our negative experiences with it!!
So, what I'm hearing is, I could absolutely just use that DIY heat box I made in 5th grade and it would work just as well as the expensive machine? 🤔 (Shoe box covered with tin foil with a cutout on top for a clear plastic window that's left outside to absorb and hopefully intensify the heat of the sun)
Fascinating. I have seen people use those things to speed up the demoulding process and I always thought they just looked like a dehydrator - guess I was right. I am going to go experiment with my dehydrator now!
I love how for ruined resin they showed their resin egg from something by tried from five minute crafts Would definitely recommend watching that video

At least it's a cute color even though it's double the price
Watched this twice yesterday and didn't want to buy a food dehydrator so I tried my craft toaster oven on keep warm. Resin cured in silicone mold in one hour. Not a super thick pour so a thicker pour may take longer. Did a color added test yesterday and doing a clear test today to check for bubbles. Heidi

Wait food dehydrators are as cheap as $30??????? Why’d I think they were hundreds of dollars lololol
I don't have a long attention span and often need to speed up videos. But your editing and content are very entertaining and it keeps my attention very well. You guys are my favorite youtubers. THANKYOU!
100% rebranded; Same happens with "Filament dryers"
I started working with resin in the beginning of 2013. At that time, there were people in the resin community using slow cookers and food dehydrators to cure resin. I bought one that year from target specifically for resin. It didn't have a temperature control, just an on/off switch. My resin pieces cured in an hour in that thing. Turned off after 45 minutes and left sitting for another 15 while it cooled down. I still have it. But I bought a new one recently that is rectangular with temperature control. The other one is round, and the trays slope downward towards the center which meant I had to level my pieces very well.
I'm glad u guys compared this because I had that same thought but don't have the money to experiment with it
7:45 Evan is me
I seen that resin machine on Amazon. And I was about to buy it . But I was also thinking it was a food dehydrator too. And I already have a food dehydrator. I'm so glad I found this video
Resin Adjacent! (did I spell that right?)
I’ve been waiting for this one! Nerdy crafter gave us a sneak peak
Evan: “ItS tHe SaMe NoIsE”
Absolutely LOVE you guys!! Long time listener, first time caller here- I'm thrown off by all the references to the resin being cured. I always thought that there was a totally scientific process that caused resin to cure- and that this process takes the manufactured stated time no matter what. Even resins that are fast-set; their info states that the pieces will be dry to the touch and de-moldable in so many hours, but still take at least 24 hours to be fully cured (depending on the brand). So the pieces in the driers- are they actually cured as you say? Or are they just dry, and still need more time to be actually cured- aka, safe to give to a customer? You guys are my go-to gurus, so I trust whatever you tell me!!
DOO - DOO - DOO - DOO, RESIN DRAIN!!
Hi evan and Katelyn I love your videos I would really love to try resin but dont know what to buy can you give any tip thanks
Thank you so much for showing the temperature also in Celsius ❤
I didn’t come to this channel for science lesson, but boy do I enjoy it. It mixes the two things I love, chaos and science.
A side note for anyone using (or thinking about using) dehydrators to dry/set/cure your craft projects... PLEASE don't use the same machine to dry your food after you've put craft stuff through it!
If you want to dry both food *and* craft things, get two machines. One for food, one for non-food. Probably different models if you can, or at the very least clearly mark the parts, so you don't mix up the trays and other components.
Traces of fumes and other residue can get embedded in the plastic, and even washing everything really well won't do a good enough job to make it food-safe again.
I love when Evan gets gets irate (with good reason) and when you all fess up to screwing up. God love ya. Keep it up y’all are fantastic.
I use a seedling mat with a disposable aluminum pan to cover it. Cures in about 8 hours, which I think is a good balance of quick curing and not getting too hot. It’s also great for warming bottles of resin without the hassle of water!
Thank you for the overlay with the temperatures ♥
Show us how you edit these Katelyn. You are amazing.
They have an editor now
love the nerdecrafter beef, you both took different approaches to the testing, one thing she pointed out was that the usable surface area was very small due the the inner ring vent holes, so say getting a dehydrator was useful to you (cold environment, or batch making opaque resin etc) get one with a more flat and ridged working surface area.
