  • The United States often draws a lot of flak from the rest of the world for everything from its foreign policy to the way it runs its domestic affairs. In fact, it seems like there are few things that can divide the world more evenly and more strongly than asking people what their opinion is of the United States.
It seems like there is no middle ground. Everyone has an opinion. Even in the same city, you'll meet people who fall on the extreme sides of the spectrum. Typically, it goes something like this - either they will respond with, "America is messed up. I would never go there, not even to visit." Or, they will respond with something along the lines of, "I love America. Its government can do some whacky things, but the people are great, and it's a beautiful country!" Take your pick. It's one or the other. But, what exactly is it that causes America to be so "messed up?" Even America's own politicians can't seem to stop talking about how messed up things are. Well, today we're going to take a deeper look. Are things really as bad as everyone seems to think they are? These are 25 common misconceptions about the United States that simply aren't true!

I live in Florida and recently met a group of 9 vacationing from Norway, and they said they were amazed at how open and friendly people are here. They loved that people will say hello when you pass them on the street, cause it just doesn't happen there.

That's a common observation about Americans. We tend to be friendlier. It's also how the North gets their reputation in the states of being jerks. They are more European in behavior.

@@zereo6945 Yes, but Midwest and Pacific Northwest are not considered "North" despite being north. @@LegendStormcrowthe Midwest is most definitely the North…when you leave the Midwest, you’re in the South…what else could it be? There are states difficult to pigeonhole, like Missouri and Oklahoma, but the Midwest is definitely the North, and always has been compared to the South.

They are TO the North, but most definitely not The North. For me it's weird how Texas is often classified as South instead of South Western, and that Illinois is considered Mid West The Mid West and South West are all areas that for the most part are parts of the Old West, aka The Wild West.@@LeeHawkinsPhoto

An interesting note, several exchange students I've met (college town) genuinely believe the whole US is similar to Europe, geographically and weatherwise, with mostly low hills, forests, meadows, etc., and big rain storms. Yes, the Midwest has those. We also have places where you can see 13 miles of grain fields in all directions. We have tornados 2 miles wide. We have hailstorms that come in from Montana or Colorado that destroy towns, and flood warnings the size of Germany.
Not really a misconception, but none of them believe it, or prepare for it. This is why we have disaster preppers.

I partially agree, but it is true that the states are granted far more autonomy then other countries regions. Most political changes start in the states rather then in Washington, a lot of times Washington has to punish states economically to get them to go along (withholding grants and the like), Washington needs the permission of the governors to deploy the National Guard, and the states (if enough of them could agree on something) could take over Washington via the national convention. So yes, as you said, Washington has A LOT of power over the states (hence why we are a republic and not a confederacy) but the states have a lot of special powers too.

    • @kalessin4942

It's really more accurate to say that the federal government doesn't have full authority over the states as would be the case in many countries and presumably many people (even many Americans) assume. The US Constitution is actually quite limiting on what it allows the federal government to make laws about. A large portion of what gets passed by the federal government is stuff that requires a state to do something to get the funding related to it. So, if the state doesn't follow it, they just lose the funding. They aren't actually obligated to comply. And a lot of the laws that the feds pass that are truly in effect do so by stretching the interstate commerce clause pretty far such that a Supreme Court that was stricter in how they interpreted the constitution would probably throw them out if they ruled on them. But you also definitely get stupidity where states pass laws that are in contradiction of federal laws, and in some cases at least (like with the marijana), the feds mostly just let the state law win. Legally, they can totally arrest you for violating the federal law though even if the state law says that it's okay. All in all, the situation is far more complicated than saying that one group has the final say.

Great video! The only two things i would want to add to/clarify a little are the authority part and the medical care in the US part. The federal Supreme Court is the “highest authority,” even compared to state Supreme Courts. That said, the states rights debate is an extremely important and deep-rooted part of our Republic that most of the world has little to no concept of. There was a time where you wouldn’t be admitted to an ER without insurance, thus going untreated and dying. Thankfully, EMTALA was instituted. That basically says every hospital that wants any kind of federal funding (medicare/aid) will provide stabilizing treatment to anyone who comes through the doors. Nobody can be denied care that is essential to life/limb regardless of cost and ability to pay. (Better to comment late than never)

One of the things I find kind of beautiful about this country is that, like list25 spoke of, each state has their own laws and culture. Don't like one place? Well, chances are, there are other places you might enjoy living in or visiting. Perhaps one of the biggest issues is having the capital to relocate, the differences between New York and Texas are so different. I find that very interesting that many of my international friends tell me that this is so different compared to their areas of the world. Of course we have huge issues, but with all the negativity all over the news, I find it nice to look at the good things.

It has to do with the history between the two countries.
The Philippines became a US territory after the Spanish-American war.
It was a relationship that did get a rocky start.
Then the Pacific war happened with American and Filipino troops fighting side by side and endured the same POW conditions together. The Bataan death march is a example of this.
Gen. McArthur then came and despite he does get some flak for it on a strategic standpoint even to this day, he kept his promise to the Filipino people's that he "shall return" and liberated the island from Imperial Japan. Who did alot of war crimes (comparable to the Nazis war crimes in Europe) to the Filipino people during their occupation.
On July 4, 1946 the Philippines gained their independence from the US on good terms between the two nations, with the exception of some Naval bases stay incase the Communist block starts getting funny ideas(Cold war was starting).
It should be noted that a Senator Tomas Confesor expressed his disapproval of even that.

I had to explain that I'd worked two 10 hr jobs for 7 years to afford to come to the UK, not buying anything but the bare necessities. They were stunned. They were getting their ideas from the glossy mags that showed US top of the line kitchens, tv shows with large apartments, movies where everyone drove nice cards, etc. People forget that movies, tv, books to a certain degree, magazines are trying to sell something so are not going to show the more mundane stuff most of us live with. Here's a false notion that I as an American would like to put to rest. The President of the United States is not Emperor of Mankind. The President doesn't nearly have the kind of power that people think, even Americans get this wrong. Congress technically has more power than the President. Recently it only appears that the President does what he wants because recently we have blockheads in Congress that have been sitting there for more than 30 years that can't seem to make meaningful decisions. We're too busy claiming ancestry from less than 1% of a minority blood when there's an anti-semitic Representative that nobody calls out because she's a Muslim, which is considered a race for some arcane reason. Trying to tango with Congress is like trying to force a belligerent drunk out of the bar. But, fun fact, only Congress can declare war, and has to approve military action.

Correction: the us constitution is the ultimate law of the land and no state can create a law that contradicts a federal law. Do they? Yes but once it is challenged in the courts - the federal law wins.

    • @stanklepoot
      @stanklepoot 5 років тому

Yes and no. You're right about the Constitution, but even in the Constitution it differentiates between areas in which the federal government has final say and areas in which states can make the final call. One of the ways the federal government can try to get around this is by combining a policy with federal funding. If the states want their share of the federal funding, they have to agree to abide by the rules listed in the policy. They can, however, refuse to do so if they're willing to made do without that bit of money from the federal government. Speed limits are an example. With few exceptions, the speed limit used to be 55 mph. That was set by the federal government, but not because they had the power to force the states to abide by their decision. The federal government bribed them to go along with that speed limit. At some point, however, some states decided they wanted to make a change. That inspired other states to do so as well.

Want to look at the marijuana issue? It's a federal crime to have and/or use, but some states have made having and/or using it legal, now it's up to the courts to sort out which law takes precedence. On that topic the constitution should stand on the side of the states, no place in that document is the federal government given the power to override the state-level laws making the substance legal. I post the 10th amendment of the Constitution of the United States Of America:
      "Article [X] (Amendment 10 - Reserved Powers)
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
To me, that means that the states have the final right to decide if marijuana is legal, and once a state does then the federal government should back out of the topic as far as that state is concerned. But then I'm not a lawyer, much less a constitutional lawyer, so if you want anything dealing with the constitution fully answered hire a constitutional lawyer and take the matter to court. :P

    1) I didn't write this list. As I'm the host, I rarely write any of our lists, I just present them. So my personal thoughts and opinions differ on certain things.
    2) This is an older list we are finally turning into a video, and it was written back in 2016.
    ~ Mike
    3) Keep in mind that we are in no way, shape or form DENYING the United States' problems. We're simply saying that things might not be as bad as the media makes them out to be. AGAIN, this list was written by three different people, two of which were Europeans who realized that things weren't as bad here in the US that they'd been raised to believe. It isn't us "Americans" trying make ourselves look better.

Whether or not you wrote the script is not relevant. Failing to express a disclaimer was your choice. What is happening in America today, politically, isn't hard to understand if one has critical thinking skills. The economy has lifted all boats, so to speak. Black, brown, yellow, red and white. Deaths on the border of illegals has DROPPED over the past two years. There are no "concentration camps". Racism has not exploded nor have dissenters been rounded up and carted off. If your kids do something wrong,do you blindly defend them and praise everything they do? Of course not! Only an asshole or an idiot would do that

Skin color can be an idicator of culture but is not a certainty. Many "white people" are Muslim. Some people of Arabic descent are Christian.

A buddy and I went to Greece, a store cashier asked which part of America we were from New York or Texas.(There are other places in America bud...) I said South Carolina my buddy said Tennessee. The cashier said “oh klu klux klan?” NOOOOOOOO!!!!!! We walked out of that shop feeling absolutely terrible that this is all people from an other nation know about our states. Traveling abroad really opened our eyes on how the rest of the world lives. Let us know how narrow minded some Americans can be. But after that.. we really wish the world could come here so they can see how we live. Not how the media wants them to think how we live
