    Funfact: In the original 3e version of the book the white dragon wyrmling only deals 1d6 cold damage with its breath weapon attack. It is also sized Tiny meaning it must enter an opponents square to deal any melee attack damage, allowing the players to take an AoO against it. In this case running the book as written wasn't as bad as it was improperly converting from one system to another without properly recreating the encounters.

      @@XPtoLevel3 I do like this format, but I really hope you do something about Player Character Deaths because I really h@te them and refuse to play in groups that allow it as well as refuse to watch content that has it. Your Tomb of Horrors video was the first time I ever continued watching it after 1 happened & I only tolerated that one because it was done humorously & I hadn't really connected to the character yet. I am watching on your Arcane Arcade channel the playthrough of Strixhaven and at least those deaths aren't true/permanent so can tolerate those.
      A Homebrew House-Rule/Homebrew I created in case I was a DM is this: Instead of dying/dying condition you instead fall unconscious for 1 minute, lose half the potential experience from the encounter, and develop a permanent scar/marking. If this happens frequently enough that you're 50% scarred you permanently lose 3-5 points of Charisma (depending on class) which can't be replaced.
      I also created a better stat system: You as a player start with 72 points you can spread however you want NOT EXCEEDING 20, then add your Racial Modifiers/Stats on top of that STILL NOT EXCEEDING 20.
      You can use either of those things if you want, please just mention where it came from if you do. Anyway keep up the great work. 0:05

    I disagree with the take that the characters dying implies the experiment failed or that game wasnt good or sucked! This was a great story, the ending is tragic and sets up for an awesome follow up! Argen now has a real reason to grow. Not everyone is meant to be a legendary hero, thats what makes the ones who do make it "special". Also, we as players do need the reminder that pc death is a real posibility, especially given how easy it is to avoid in later levels. Loved the episode.

    • @DJVevyVevs
      @DJVevyVevs 3 місяці тому +58

      I agree and disagree. While player death should absolutely be a thing and can absolutely have narrative impact, it should be a possibility rather than a near guarantee, which fighting ANY dragon at level 1 is. The ONLY reason Argent survived was because of a compounded success and racial trait. If he had failed or been literally any other race or even subrace he would also have died. As it stands now, the story isn't epic enough in scale to bring in new characters that would have the same level of narrative weight as Argent would, meaning the entire narrative of the rest of the dungeon (Keep in mind this is being looked at in a vacuum as written rather than as a starting point to a campaign in which this negative impact is far lessened) kind of hinges on one player rather than the party as a whole. And that's pretty much the best case scenario in what happened during that combat. The far more likely one would have just been that everyone dies and you have to either start the story over with new characters or just move on to a different story.

    • @dorianleakey
      @dorianleakey 3 місяці тому +14

      It's more from the experiment of how the rules work and the level the adventure is set at, so the breath weapon would easily kill all of them in one hit on a successful save, you can try again, but it suggests there is an issue with game balance, they should have a chance to hit the Wyrmlimg after the breath weapon.

    • @dorianleakey
      @dorianleakey 3 місяці тому +9

      The best part about Sunless is that it opens up the game for plenty of continuation. You can have Belak escape or be a part of something bigger, or have the Gulthias tree be a hook in some way if they destroy it (like, if it resurrects the vampire staked by the tree). I'm running this one into Hoard of the Dragon queen, and will be including some NPCs trying to break into the southern part of the dungeon.

      @@softreyna it's exactly this, it's just insane to think that they basically must not have playtested the full module even once after converting it, since this is a problem pretty much any imaginable level 1 party WILL run into if they have to fight that thing as written

    • @KaleidosXXI
      @KaleidosXXI Місяць тому +1

      @@MalkuthSephira That's because the party didn't do the module as intended. The wyrmling isn't supposed to be a level 1 encounter, you're supposed to level up first or avoid the fight entirely, it's an optional and non-time constrained mid-boss in the dungeon. You can also ally with or kill both or either the goblin and the kobold factions (not just the kobolds), and you miss out on a lot of xp if you befriend either or both factions. The issue is that this party are veteran players, so they lean into the RP and look for alternative outcomes instead of the designed routes, so they're bending the module more than it's intended to be and they aren't behaving the way new players generally do in a by-the-book dungeon crawl where you're basically expected to kill everything or befriend the factions for easy passage through the dungeon and helpers to carry them. This is a tutorial module for *new* players, not a low level module for older players to play like any other module, so to get the most out of it you need to be in the mindset of someone new to DnD and not approach it like you would with game experience.

    I don't know what Jacob's experience is with OSR systems, but based on how much he seems to enjoy level 1 in 5e, due to players being forced to think creatively about their equipment and environment instead of having a ready-made answer in the form of countless abilities and spells, I think he'd enjoy those.

    This is the first adventure I played, in 2000. I was 8, my father was the dm. I still remember the Ashardalon text that meant nothing, the fire fountain, the poison fountain, and of course meepo the kobold. Meepo (and other funny characters the dm can use to influence the party) is such a good new player intro tool for the dm I find it weird it’s not used more.
    We had Meepo immediately drink at the fire fountain. Our dm was generous and had him breath fire instead of immediately die horribly.

      @@theowatson791 the reason the game has legacy things like "a painting worth 5,000 gold" is so the dm could give loot they could actually carry away as a painting weighed about as much as 5 coins and you could carry more of that kind of loot. Treasure was also rolled on a random table, so it might not be there the next time you went through the room.

    A simple suggestion that might make lvl 1 play better: make the lvl 1 hit points 1dX + X + con (for example, a fighter would have 1d10 + 10 + con). It'd solve, or at least ease, the issue of survivability while still leaving most of the good parts of lvl 1 intact.

    27:16 as someone who read the adventure because he is planning on running it, my first thought about the empty rooms is that they would be great for hiding bodies in as well as taking long rests inside the dungeon. I don't normally allow players to take long rests in the dungeons because buckling down for 8 or more hours inside the enemies' home is realistically going to end in being disrupted over and over again until the entire dungeon comes down to find you. empty rooms provide a relatively safe haven for the players to long rest in since those rooms are clearly unused by the occupants of the dungeon who have no reason to regularly enter them.
    granted, it is frustrating for the players to find a seemingly pointless room.

    I am enjoying this series, you are all very entertaining to watch and, even as a 40 year DM, I have learned something each time. I credit the players for sticking with it, even to the bitter (cold) end, playing and having a good time with this.
    I will reiterate my previous encouragement (from Tomb of Horrors) to play these adventures using their original edition's rules. The Dragon Incident was a direct result of using the 5e rules and the number bloat it brings. In 3rd edition, her breath weapon would have done 1d6 damage, claws would do 1d3 damage, and bite would do 1d4 damage - all manageable for 1st level characters, without a need for hurrying to 2nd or 3rd level. Level 1 IS fun. In this case, the rule system played against that.
    I also hope that Tomb of Horrors doesn't taint your (as a group) view of the older adventures. It was intentionally obtuse and designed to be a "get ya" adventure. Take a look at Keep on the Borderlands, Village of Hommlet, the Slavelords series, and some of the other classics. They contain everything you're looking for - story, adventure, combat, social interactions, and so much more - including a lot of room for the DM to make them their own.
    Speaking of which, even if the adventure doesn't say so, in all of the older editions (and the newer ones), it is *always* encouraged that a DM make the adventure their own. Even if you're going to go with a "Rules as Written" approach, play the encounters the way you enjoy, especially for the social encounters and role-playing. Modules shouldn't be constraining, they should be tools for you as the DM to build on and with. If you want to let them to talk to the dragon and have a tense social encounter, then let them, I say! Just be ready for when they want to take it with them as a "pet" or just start trying to talk their way through everything. I would probably have had the dragon (an immature, evil-leaning creature that has been abused and mistreated) unwilling to negotiate, personally. But, that's the great thing about this game - each table makes it their own!
    I'll stop rambling now. Thank you again for all of the hard work.

    Enjoyed it a lot. Thanks. I think that if you want to play this dungeon at level one as it is, it's important to create characters with the understanding that they might not survive. A first time adventuring party probably is invested in their characters though, so it would be good for the DM to find ways to let them live. That said, the game is more fun when there are stakes, and when characters are doing something truly heroic because it is past what they should be capable of. Every party's got to decide for themselves what is most important

    Have to mention. Very recently had my DnD group go through Sunless Citadel. No deaths "unfortunately" but I did... technically, save our mage from a coop de grace, by "accidentally" hitting him instead of the bbeg. He put himself to sleep, alongside a handful of the opponents we were facing. Bbeg picked him up and threatened to kill him. I shot a cantrip at him, missed, hit the mage for 1 point of damage, having just healed him for 7 (before the sleep), and woke him up. Causing the bbeg to attack, but only doing 3 points of damage. BAM! saved his life. 😂
    It totally makes sense since I am playing a bard. Clearly a heroic moment... once all is said and done. Lol
