Thanks for your patience with this series everyone. We have been absolutely busy at work. I've currently been handling about 3 projects at a time. My goal is to at least make progress on my mantelpiece once a week! Thanks for all the feedback and support. I truly appreciate it!
Great to see you evolve from a trim/finish carpenter to more of a cabinetmaker architectural craftsman. Nice job . Respect
Are you going to cover the speaker with anything? Wood lattice, white fabric, something fancy?
Hi bro. Maybe you could try to look for a Japanese Kumiko grid design that would look good with your sound bar covering. I know the Kumiko and classical design don't necessarily match, but be cunning and creative. Good luck for whatever your sound design is.🤙
Where can I find those books?
Link, please.
Makes me feel better about some things I need to paint in my house that have been ready for paint since November, and the slow progress on my powder room reno.
I remember watching your videos and being so inspired when I was miserable at my old job. One day i just got a gut feeling to check on indeed and there was a custom home trim crew looking for someone. I had no experience and they were willing to teach me so I quit my job for them…and from then on i’ve been loving every bit of what I do. Now i’m an experienced trim carpenter and still watching all of your videos, thank you for the years and years of inspiration and knowledge transfers.
I grew up following my Irish Grandfather around, he built houses part time, and farmed full time, all I ever wanted to be was a finish carpenter, but alas, it was frowned upon for little girls in that era, I wasn't even allowed to take wood shop in high school. But I learned on my own, with the basics I learned from my Grandfather, I have built a lot of furniture and made over 2000 wood carvings.
Dude its looking AMAZING. I just bought that book - Traditional American Rooms. Thanks for adding some classical design to the modern internet!
Bro my two favorite UA-camrs. Whattttt
You make me smile to see how much you're enjoying your new occupational therapy. My appreciation for the ornate moulding and trim is slowly coming 'round. Nice work as usual and I look forward to all of your next videos. 👍👍
Yo Richard, I really appriciate you priming after every step. It does help us visualize the project coming together. It's looking fantastic Bud. Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!
... All good things are worth the wait. Great work on the mantel. Btw, the opposite of boring is drole. Lol. You're right, though: most trim work these days is much to be desired. I've been an avid fan of Brent Hull forever. He's in my woodworking anthology series & epoch of skillsmen, carpenters, and authors alongside the great Norm Abram. Keep up the excellent content. Novice carpenters are watching. Hugs from Midland, Texas.
I love this series. The progression and how meticulous the process is. Every time you add somthing it looks more and more beautiful.
Man, your skill with Brent’s guidance is a thing of power.
Great stuff man. Keep it up.
I don’t know many people who get such joy out of work like you seem to. That’s inspiring. I have been watching g for a while now and you progressed so much. Good for you. Absolutely beautiful work
For the speaker, instead of using a piece of wood, instead build a wood frame and stretch some white mesh (thick enough material and small enough mesh that the speaker behind is reasonably obscured) over that frame, stable it in place on the back, and "fasten" it in place with some magnets. If you pick the right color, it'll blend perfectly with your final paint color and almost seamlessly blend in to the rest of amazing trim work.
I was thinking the same thing magnets would be perfect.
Yes, you can buy white speaker grill fabric and it would look great 👍🏼
That looks fantastic!
Amazing work and your skills have refined so well. One tool suggestion that I recently purchased and has been a lift, is a flat back tape measure. Makes it so much easier to mark out measurements as it has no curve. Glad to see the house coming along!
Beautiful work
Amazing work, Rich! I love your attention to detail!
Looks fantastic! Love all the inspiration and trying new things. Great job
Richard, thanks for the video. Can you make a videos showing the speaker cover? Thanks again.
A whistle of approval for sure! (But I bet Ashley is happy that it's almost done 😁)
She’s definitely ready haha!
Have you considered using fabric? Particularly an extremely fine white mesh fabric. I have seen that used as a cover - it reduces air flow for air vents, but would do very little to muffle or diffuse sound. Think about sound proofing a room - you need to use heavy, thick fabrics in multiple layers to get any sound dampening. A single layer of a tightly woven fabric wouldn't interfere with sound quality but would provide the illusion of a solid surface. Just a suggestion - your mantel looks AMAZING - job well done!
AWESOMETACULAR work!!! Been wondering and waiting for an update on your mantle build… spectacular as always
Looks amaaaazing!
Dude, you killed that. I remember stumbling on your channel a few years ago when you were still using mdf. It's cool to see your craft progress. I only do trim jobs on occasion, but i definitely appreciate these more technical jobs. I dont even care for a lot of trim stacked and like the minimal look but, man that looks good. 👌
Very intricate and beautiful! You’re a badass with a passion! ❤
Great job as always. Ive been watching this mantel build, and it is amazing. I got a few ideas and some tips thanks.
all I can say is WOW! Beautiful Richard.
Windsor I for the win. I'm loving your custom design.
Wow! You had a vision and you implemented it flawlessly! Took some time but well worth it 💯 🎉🎉🎉❤
man this is an inspiration - I appreciate your approach - just savouring it and getting it perfect
Awesome build!
Been eagerly anticipating these videos. Also on Patreon. Keep it up these are very inspiring
You’re doing an excellent job; the trim work is simply amazing 👏😀👍
Looks awesome! Great work!
It looks beautiful Richard
Looking good Richard!
Looks fantastic !!! Definitely white frame, and higher pitch !!
It's looking SO good!! I'm learning a lot from your channel.
Wow, brother, what a great job! Keep up that detail work. Have a blessed day
Got the festool tools nkw? I remember the Milwaukee and Dewalt days. You even inspired me to wainscot my dining are with Sommerlin router tools! Great to see the evolition of yoir channel.
Absolutely beautiful work! Yes, the new camera was a step backwards in quality. You may want to consider painting the TV frame as the add-on frames will likely cover the detail surrounding the Frame TV. I recently installed a Frame TV over my daughter’s fireplace.
Dude! You crushed it. That double cross headed corner is amazing
Simply love watching a true craftsman.
Awesome work as usual you never cease to amaze me with your talent and dedication to your craft
Bravo! Thank you for sharing your journey of this fantastic project. Love that you’re providing historical, documented sources. This is next-level mill-working. If you are looking for more books of decorative arts, try a book of Hepplewhite (furniture design and detail) and something more didactic Vitruvius’ The Ten Books on Architecture. It’s architectural detail along with theory. Looking forward to viewing more of your work.
Truly amazing that you're able to create this by simply looking at a picture, keep sharing your process!
The opposite of inspiring is boring. Thank you again for another inspiring video on a subject that I really enjoy doing.
Damn man.. Your skills have improved immensely over the past few years! Looking good!
Awesome videos as always, I've learned so much from you. I gotta say though, the fact that the only size tv that space will fit is that specific tv was a terrible mistake. But it works for now and it looks great. Nice work brother, wish I had your skills and knowledge!
Those corner mitre Collins Clamps are sure handy on this build. I need a set.
It looks great , you have done a great job !!!
I did something similar in my house, building the mantel and picture framing the flat screen years ago! It’s very unique and you won’t see it in many houses unless you’re a carpentry and molding geeks like most of us. Great job, can’t wait to see the top piece go up.
Looking great the lamps look awesome can’t wait to see the finished product and yes take your time because you need to make a living for your family that comes first thank you young men for your vedios
Looks incredible!
Bro I have been watching you for some time and I have turned a new leaf I am a custom finish carpenter up here in idaho and I'm gonna start integrating this classical work in my clients homes
Looks absolutely amazing. A white fabric screen that clips in magnetically should work perfectly opposed to the grilled box. Kinda like them diy sound absorption panels people make.
Looks great. I noticed the wall sconces are different heights though.....👀
BEAUTIFUL!!! Kudos.
Very nice work Rich 👍👌
It's looking incredible!
Keep up the good work. Semper Fi.
I've watched everyone of these videos and say wow every time as the mantle transformed absolutely amazing 👏
Looks very assume! Nicely done. I really enjoy your videos
TV’s over fireplaces are a terrible idea for a several reasons and is a “style” that died over 10 yrs ago.
I don’t know why, but this is one of my favorite videos you’ve done so far. Nice work.
Looks amazing! Well worth waiting for.
Great job!
Excellent work!!
I generally don't like TVs over mantles, for two reasons:
1- It detracts from the mantle, but with that TV and an image of a painting, that's not a problem.
2- I don't like viewing a TV higher than eye level when I'm sitting on a couch. Can't do much about that, except go ultra modern and make a very low fireplace/mantle, but I think a "painting" hung that low would look out of place.
You do very nice work.
There is a bracket system for TVs which allow you to pull it forward and it then drops down lower, to fix point 2. Just not sure that is so good when the fireplace is on. Which brings me to my point 3.
3. If the Fire is on does the flame movement distract from watching the TV.
I am watching this with interest as I have been thinking of building a lesser skilled version of what is being built here just not if the flames would distract.
Looks amazing bro!!!!!
You are always very skilled in your trade and also in your explanation in your videos
Nice work! Can you imagine if the tv would have been out of square or not straight ha!
2 tips with the frame tv. 1) get the beveled frame. I think the oak frame would go good with your floors. I have the white but it’s too modern for your mantle imo. 2) Recess the mounting bracket into the drywall. I basically ran a backer block so the mounts are flush with back of drywall. This will allow it to sit legit flush with the wall.
Nice job brother!
Your work is incredible. Thanks for keeping the art of creative carpentry alive. You should open a school for finish carpentry and teach others the art and skill.
Incredible work as one would only expect from you! I just have to say you have made the opining so tight to the TV.. I hope the day never comes that it fails and you cannot get another to fit.
Oh it will as it did to me.
Beautiful man. Wish I could do finish carpentry.
Looks awesome! I would definitely buy a second one of those TVs and just keep it stored in its box somewhere in case that one dies years down the road. Eventually they'll probably change that TV's dimensions in a new model or maybe discontinue it, and it'd be a shame if you or the next owner had to jury-rig some other TV to fit there on a different mount, maybe overlapping some of the framework around it if it's bigger.
12:35 that little *_fight club_* style blip was hilarious 😆
Dang, can't wait to see it finished, but the process is a real trip also.
You can add white acoustic fabric to the speaker.
Looks great
Incredible!!!!!
Wow! Wow! Wow! Even the voice over with the video worked well
Instead of creating a grill to cover the soundbar, you should creat a wooden frame and stretch white speaker fabric over it (maybe two layers so you don’t see the black soundbar through it). This will make sure the speaker is hidden, you don’t know its speaker fabric unless you touch it, and won’t impede the soundbar performance.
Also, you should just make a white oak bezel for the TV to match your doors, and will add a subtle pop against the white trim.
It all looks awesome.
Today, thanks to Google, I learned that there exists Mantels and Mantles...2 completely different things with different spellings and meanings. I don't know what good it does me to know the difference in those spellings at my age of 76 but learning never stops, right? I prefer rough axe-hewn surroundings around fireplaces or tile or stone but what you've created here is incredibly beautiful and if I had more than one fireplace in my home I would definitely do one of them in a similar style.
Looks like you recorded the video in a LOG format (which is flat and needs a LUT applied, or grading). If you don't want to rely on LUTs, then record in one of the other formats that grades it in-camera :) ---Looks like you figured it out by the end of the video.
Love the channel, btw, and I recommend it to everyone I see doing trim work.
FYI, you can undelete most files on an SD card with PC software.
Love your videos!
Looking great
You do some good work bro
Beautifui, now.....onto the next project Richard.
Make your own oak wrap for the tv. It's easy. That's what I did. Looks great. You're not going to like the clip on plastic trim that samsung sells for the tv. Very nice mantle. Great work
Will you be building built ins on the 2 openings of the side of the mantle? It would be cool if you make 2 secret cabinets that look like a wainscot panels to match the existing
Always look forward to your post.
"We're going to jump right into this fireplace..."
LETTSSSS GOOOOOO
Awesome, so impressive.
Stunning work
Been watching for years!! You are really growing in your skills. Love it. Also noticed a bit of graying on your head. I don't think it's primer? I believe there is something in the Bible about graying and wisdom. I have seen your wisdom throughout the years. Keep going dude!!😊

For the soundbar grill, are you making like a white mash (maybe polyester or some matte fabric) panel or like a wood panel with grill cutout?
I love it.
