Definitely, when considering the fact he hides behind the facade of a bible worshiping Christian claiming to do no wrong, but ultimately shows his true colours, the actor who plays this guy did a phenomenal job.
This scene shows how evil Norton is. One could imagine a better man agreeing to help Andy get a retrial and regain freedom, and perhaps after they can work as equals running the same scams and laundering money as before. Andy said himself he would be just as indictable for the crimes. Instead what Norton does shows he has no interest in treating Andy as a human being, let alone a partner in crime. He basically wants a slave to run his scams and polish his boots.
David Lea of course he's not treating him equally. Andy is basically the warden's tool to earning massive amounts of wealth. It seems to me that you are overanalyzing something that is foolishly simple
+Xiran Wang You missed the point. If the warden had treated Andy better, they would have been partners, the reason why Andy rebelled away was because he was just a tool, a slave. Outcomes of the story would be different.
+Lord Void Andy wouldn't have a reason to hate norton if Andy was treated "equal" and if norton was actually a good person, he would have helped Andy get out of prison and would have continued helping norton making big bucks. Instead, norton acted like a dick and alas, you know what happened next.

It all speaks to a man who knows he has absolute power in this situation and doesn't need to raise his voice at all to get his point across. He can do whatever he wants with Andy with complete immunity. Brilliant acting and a chilling moment in the film.
Wrong, buddy. Sam Norton only succeeded to further piss off Andy to the breaking point where he eventually escapes Shawshank, uses his very own alias, siphons off 370 grand of Norton's money, and heads for Mexico.
In this scene, Norton gifted Andy the best gift someone in Andy's position could receive; desperation. When Andy learnt the true nature of the Warden and how far he was going to go, to prevent Andy ever from leaving Shawshank. Andy at that moment knew he was a Deadman. If he stays working under the thumb of the Warden, he'd die in Shawshank (never being allowed to leave, while he was alive) or once The Warden no longer needed Andy, he'd kill him just to tie up the loose end (just as he killed the kid to silence him). I think that's when Andy found his motivation to make his daring escape, and that he had no intention of being recaptured or taken alive. To get busy living or get busy dying.
He already his escape plan in motion from the beginning, but what this did was give him his motivation to bury the warden, drag him down to perish in the pit he tried to throw Andy into, and at the same time take the financial means he needs to start a new life.

Red’s line early in the movie was nice, even if it was pretty obviously inserted only to make it clear that the film wasn’t homophobic: he said the rapists aren’t homosexuals: “You have to be human. They wouldn’t qualify.”
Exactly right. Warden Norton is so insane he thinks he’s this devout Christian when in reality he is doing blatantly un-Christian things on an hourly basis. Just like Mrs. Carmody in “The Mist,” another movie adaptation of a Stephen King book. And also directed by Frank Darabont. Big Jim Renny also, in “Under the Dome” 15-20 years earlier his actor would have been Brian Dennehy. Or they would have offered Brian the role.

Andy outsmarts the warden. Andy says it ends, knowing the warden would demand the opposite, keeping the money laundering going, continuing on with Andy's plan for escape. A pivitol scene of the battle of wits that no one seems to notice. It also makes Andy appear to be completely beaten, lowering the wardens guard and awareness even further, while Andy brilliantly plots his escape as well as revenge.
Him entering the cell is scarier than any big monster demon in any horror movie. The sadistic look in his eye, his deep ill intent. You'd think he's the devil himself.
I get a kick out of imagining Norton, Hadley, and some other guards dancing around a big fire, screaming and hollering. 🤣 I wish they had shown that as part of a montage of what Norton was describing, with Norton's dialogue as voice-over. 😆

Norton, and Hadley learned an important lesson... don’t mess with the accountant who does your taxes! Boggs also learned an important lesson. Don’t mess with the accountant who does the GUARDS/WARDENS taxes!
Yeah, Bob Grunton really caught the essence of the Evil Warden, it is subtle, but all there in its sophisticated subtle projection. This film was really made by the entire cast, but Grunton carried it a lot more than people give him credit for.
I always found it interesting how the Captain of the guards still treated Andy like shit even after he helped him with his tax issues over the money he got from his deceased brother.
Well Hadley did help protect Andy, so that's one good thing he did in return. Plus you have to realize he was also never going do dare go against his boss Warden Norton for that matter either, with all that was going on, and what not.
It's jail. Hadley plays for the guards. A favor here or there maybe can be excused. But Hadley could never put his guard down or it might lead to inmates or worse, other guards questioning his authority.
I put this up Bob Gunton's acting in this scene and the rest of the movie up there with Anthony Hopkins / Silence of the Lambs. Some of the best acting of the 90s right here in this clip. He also has the look of someone from the 1930s better than anyone in the movie with his glasses / hair cut.
He was really holding onto that obtuse slight from Andy. A month later and it was still fresh on his mind. The only characters I can think of eviler were Palpatine and Lil Ze from City of God. Bob Gunton nailed this role.
And to think that Clancy Brown can go from playing the hard-ass Captain Hadley, to being the voice of Mr. Krabs on "SpongeBob SquarePants"! Just shows his underrated versatility as an actor!
William Burke Clancy Brown has played other villains in his career like in Bad Boys in 1983 with Sean Penn and was the evil Kurgan in Highlander in 1986 going against Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert. A deranged killer in Shoot to Kill in 1988 and was a corrupt Solider in Extreme Prejudice in 1987. He has also played good guys to in comedies like Flubber with Robin Williams
Cant agree. He had one other month to maybe even think they may discover the poster in his cell. Regardless of this you cant tell me he was fine with being in there 2 months? Surely not!
nikki1778 For sure that is terrible punishment, but I think Andy could stand it much more than other prisoners. For sure I would prefer sitting two months in comfortable corner than cell full of rapists.
There's just somthing about the casual way he talks about "book burnings" and "danciing around like wild injuns" that sparks a familiar unease in your heart. And deep down you know that this is *evil* on a primordial level.
No it was when Andy mentioned the money laundering scams that pushed him over the edge. If Andy stopped right after calling him obtuse, he’d have been fine.
@@andrewwestman2407 hhhhhwaaat? Hhhuwhat did you call me?........ I think you're incorrect. Being called obtuse was of great offence to the warden. The mentioning of laundering money was just a cherry on the cake.
That obtuse line really got under The Warden’s skin lol. I remember when I saw this movie as a kid I had to look the word up to see exactly why it got him rattled lol.
The best movies always have u caring deeply about the characters they play. So much admiration for Andy and his fellow prisoners, wanting them to win, makes this movie (amongst other things) so damn good.
I can't tell who's worse. The warden with an obvious but cruel manner to inflict pain. Or the sadistic Hadley who just enjoys the misery of people beneath him
This was the moment that sealed Warden Norton’s fate. Had he just let Andy stop helping with the scams, Norton could have taken what money he had and retired. Instead, he pushed Andy, threatening him. For Andy, this was the last straw. The Warden was dead, he just didn’t know it yet.
And threatens him to confess to his crime[s] - thinking Tommy was gonna escape, when in fact, he was just telling what could have been the truth, which could have proved Andy's innocence. Sadly, there are still a bunch of Sammy Nortons walking out there - who I must say, don't give a rat's ass about justice.
This scene is like a two months away from Andy’s escape. He must have been broken after this shit, but he was aware that it’s only a matter of time to get out of here. But what is terrifying is that he was in constant stress for 2 months that the guards will discover the hole in his cell. That must have been pure torture for Andy
Norton was incredibly written. A decent looking man who's also educated and preaches the word of God tasked to oversee and manage criminals. But it's only a mask on his true evil form. When first watching this movie, I seriously thought at first that Hadley would be the main antagonist here. While Hadley is brutal in his own right, it's nothing compared to Norton. Seeing Norton's true self makes Hadley look like an angel.
I first watched this movie in my second year of college and I gotta say... Frank Darabont wrote this movie perfectly. I love how Norton starts off somewhat generous in the beginning, but as the film progresses, his evil side starts to unfold. In the scene where Tommy gets shot, Norton's eyes are literally black. But this scene really shows his true colors. "Or you will do the hardest time there is." The way he softly delivers that line so softly makes it so threatful. And the fact is, he was being obtuse before Andy got put in solitary. I don't think there's any bad thing about this movie at all.
"...or am I being obtuse?"
I don't think I've ever hated a fictional character more than in that moment
Right? he was still being obtuse!
@@mrbow50001 Nope, now he's being acute.

That's my angle. Was it a New Testament quote? He was a pretentious posturing well fed twat. His downfall is a celebration.
kurwa
Michael M He didn't really believe in all the crap he kept yapping about.
Eventually he wanted money.
Thus made Andy do all his shady deals for him.
Norton: Give him another month to think about it.
Andy: I'm telling the Daily Bugle.
Norton, and Hadley learned an important lesson... don’t mess with the accountant who does your taxes!
Boggs also learned an important lesson. Don’t mess with the accountant who does the GUARDS/WARDENS taxes!
And I learned an important lesson. Become an accountant and do taxes.
"You'll think you've been fucked by a train!" Honestly, that would have scared the living piss out of me hearing that from the warden.
You'll think you've been listening to Train.
Ha! Great comment! I laughed out loud.
In other words, hell on earth.
Nick lmao 😂😂
Haha brilliant, made me chuckle
Lmao
For me, the greatest movie villain of all time. I can't think of anyone more loathsome!
Yeah, Bob Grunton really caught the essence of the Evil Warden, it is subtle, but all there in its sophisticated subtle projection. This film was really made by the entire cast, but Grunton carried it a lot more than people give him credit for.
8digitPDX I'm glad that Andy didn't buy Norton's story about Tommy's "attempt to escape".
8digitPDX It's Gunton.
Tavell Clinton Yeah, the one guy who can prove your innocence conveniently ends up dead!
brick top from snatch comes to mind
He should ve gotten the academy award just for this scene. Pure art in there.
"...or am I being obtuse?"
nope, now you're being acute
I always found it interesting how the Captain of the guards still treated Andy like shit even after he helped him with his tax issues over the money he got from his deceased brother.
You have a point there. Very ungrateful.
Well Hadley did help protect Andy, so that's one good thing he did in return. Plus you have to realize he was also never going do dare go against his boss Warden Norton for that matter either, with all that was going on, and what not.
He did beat the hell out of that creepy dude who kept raping Andy.
It's jail. Hadley plays for the guards. A favor here or there maybe can be excused. But Hadley could never put his guard down or it might lead to inmates or worse, other guards questioning his authority.
@@Captain-Sum.Ting-Wong he only did it to free Andy up to put the wardens schemes into action.
I’m realizing now that losing his 1 bunk cell was the only threat, can’t finish his tunnel if he doesn’t play the warden’s game
His Judgement Cometh and that Right Soon
And I love how the rock hammer that was hidden in the Bible was in the book of Exodus! This film is full of irony and foreshadowing.
nodakliberalhawk my favorite movie
nodakliberalhawk man you just made me realize that was why he wrote, "salvation lies within." Thanks for that.
Sorry I ruined your New Year's Eve party Lieutenant Da-an.
She tasted like cig-a-rettes!
J
When he says that it broke Hadley's heart to shoot him it's really hilarious, considering Hadley was a sadistic and heartless bastard.
What great dialogue from the Warden! Sounds so poetic in rhythm. Just listen to the space in between words.
Whatever you do, don’t give that man command of a starship.
After everything the warden does in this movie that is beyond cruel, I actually smiled when he swallowed a bullet in the end.
Its amazing how his evilness is only enhanced by how dry and subdued he is. One of the best villain performances I have ever seen.
He was really holding onto that obtuse slight from Andy. A month later and it was still fresh on his mind. The only characters I can think of eviler were Palpatine and Lil Ze from City of God. Bob Gunton nailed this role.
"And the library? Gone, reduced to atoms."
His face and acting is so intense its scary
The sound score in this scene is the most haunting of the whole film. It sends an icy-cold shiver down my spine every time.
This whole movie is amazing.
And to think that Clancy Brown can go from playing the hard-ass Captain Hadley, to being the voice of Mr. Krabs on "SpongeBob SquarePants"! Just shows his underrated versatility as an actor!
I mean, both are evil crooks. The difference is that one can fight and the other cannot.
He also voices Lex Luthor in the DCAU.
“SPONGEBOB ME BOY “ ikr it’s wild
nothing stops...nothing! the calmness of that line and the slow walk forward is fuckin awesome.
1:20 the warden's head is at an obtuse angle.
1:37 he puts his head at 90 degrees right before he asks if he's being obtuse.
Gaelen O'Hagan lol. Yup
That's obtuse
Has to be one of the worst punishments you can endure.
All they have to do is shut the door and keep you in there, nothing you can do about it.
Give him another month to think about it.
TheBlackDahlia896 Haha, the best and possibly most evil line in the film. Imagine having to do all that over again.
nikki1778 For introverts this is not that bad. For example Andy had another month to thinking about details of his escape.
Cant agree.
He had one other month to maybe even think they may discover the poster in his cell.
Regardless of this you cant tell me he was fine with being in there 2 months? Surely not!
nikki1778
For sure that is terrible punishment, but I think Andy could stand it much more than other prisoners. For sure I would prefer sitting two months in comfortable corner than cell full of rapists.
You understand me? You catchin' mah drift.........or am I being obtuse?
Give him another month to think about it.
Retro Gameing Guitarist Haha, the best line in the scene, andys face is like "What, no way!"
+Miss Jennifer „Baby J“ Banks Give me another month to think about it.
No, now your just being acute.
Best line of the scene
one of the best scenes in movie history in my opinion..
There's just somthing about the casual way he talks about "book burnings" and "danciing around like wild injuns" that sparks a familiar unease in your heart. And deep down you know that this is *evil* on a primordial level.
Andy really hit a nerve when he called the warden 'obtuse', didn't he!
😂Proper triggered him
No it was when Andy mentioned the money laundering scams that pushed him over the edge.
Norton is one of the most vile villains in a movie.
Absolute power that corrupts absolutely.
i'll take "what is law enforcement" for a hundred, alex.
It’s not that power corrupts, it’s that power attracts the corruptible.
It takes a great actor, director, and writer to create a character we can hate so much...Bob Gunton, Frank Darabont, and Steven King. Thank you.
Never offend a man who has your money
0:06 Hadley's face will change when he goes in prison himself hahaha
Capt. Hadley was such a toughie until he.....wasn't.
He seems to be a nice man in real life, though.
Everytime there was a break in filming I think Clancy Brown apologized to everyone even though he wasn't the bad guy. His character was.
From what I hear, he started sobbing like a little girl when they took him away.
Hadley is your typical bully. Acts tough because his position allows him to get away with it, but deep down he is a wimp
Funny thing is, Warden Norton in his later years looks just like my old high school principal! It's just scary all the way around!
One of the greatest scenes in movie history, in my opinion.
"Nothing stops . Nothing . "
That obtuse line really got under The Warden’s skin lol. I remember when I saw this movie as a kid I had to look the word up to see exactly why it got him rattled lol.
Can you even imagine a month, no a week in that hellhole!? 4 days in and you'd think your time should be up. That shit would eat at your sanity!
Daniel Staab man 1 hour in their feels like a 1000 years let alone one month
'The sodomites'...I wouldn't fancy that!
The best movies always have u caring deeply about the characters they play. So much admiration for Andy and his fellow prisoners, wanting them to win, makes this movie (amongst other things) so damn good.
Fucked by a train 🚂…… what if Andy said Choo Choo!? 😂
Such a great villian
When he says that 1 bunk hilton 😁
I can't tell who's worse. The warden with an obvious but cruel manner to inflict pain. Or the sadistic Hadley who just enjoys the misery of people beneath him
This was the moment that sealed Warden Norton’s fate. Had he just let Andy stop helping with the scams, Norton could have taken what money he had and retired. Instead, he pushed Andy, threatening him. For Andy, this was the last straw. The Warden was dead, he just didn’t know it yet.
The cold warden tears Andy down horribly in this scene.
One of the most evil villains in cinema history
Warden Norton is one of the best villains I've ever seen in this movie
Man some of the lines in this movie had me cracking up........."cast you down with the sodomites" comical!
I think Andy panicked when he said “I’ll get you out of that one man cell.”
One of the best villains ever. Reminded me of palpatine but without powers
Warden Samuel Norton. Greatest villain in prison movie history.
The moment Andy decided it was time to go
One of cinemas greatest villains
Patrick Oliver & one of cinemas most underrated
It’s easy to forget throughout the movie that this is a Stephen King story. This scene is a strong reminder.
Hadley and warden deserve to be in Shawshank more than the prisoners themselves.
They would probably be raped daily
@@johndonohue4153 ...and I guess that would be okay since they're not women.
@@REXXSEVEN No… it would be ok because they deserve the raping
