"Costco Hotdog For Dinner" is now what I will write to test pens.
I just received my piston pen yesterday and I'm so in love with it. Thank you very much for showing how to clean it. I was nervous about having to take the pen apart to clean it after hearing about being careful about not losing the o-rings.
I always find answers to all my questions on your channel
I wish I had that code before I bought mine. I have Writer’s Blood in mine and enjoy how smooth it writes.
Writer's Blood or Oxblood in this would be sublime.
That's the ink I'm using in my Raven too!
@@PhunkMaster-VivatChristusRex How do you feel about Noodler's inks? If you like them or don't mind them They have a special edition ink at Dromgoole's and it's called Texas Black Bat. It performs very well on cheap paper and it is one of the blackest inks I've ever seen or used. It takes a long time to dry on really good paper like Tomoe River though so if you like to journal it might be a problem unless you use blotter rockers or paper.
To buy another would be an Unkindness 😂
Nice looking pen slightly reminiscent of my Estie Camden. I took mine in part-ex against the Scribe. I think I prefer a cartridge converter mechanism. I find my Camden nib a fine nib to be very fine and needed a nibmeister to tune it. Overall the Camden is one of the few pens that I reach for because of its touch and feel. A nice solid writer. Thank you for a great post
Very good review on a really cool black pen. The attention to detail in terms of colour saturation in every nook and cranny is impressive.
I wouldn’t post it as that marking ring would annoy me and it doesn’t need it,like a Lamy 2000 macralon.
Piston versions appear to be already sold out. And even at 10% off, I'm afraid it's just not in my budget, but I kind of wish it was. I'd be okay with the c/c version with an EF nib, if it's REALLY an EF. I'm not familiar with Esterbrook's nibs.
it would be super interesting to see how similar ...if at all.. the piston/pump system is to the ones out there on say the Wing Sung 601...always thought more should use that updated system
This pump draw filling system seems to me be almost exactly the same as the one on the Wing Sung 601.
I just love ravens
They're a pretty cool bird
Oddly enough, the F nib on mine was subpar. Had to make it wetter to be able to enjoy it and it is still not one of my favorite nibs. I haven’t had much luck with Esterbrook nibs, except the Journaler which is absolutely perfect
I would really like to get the pen. I plan to go to the Philadelphia Pen Show in January. Esterbrook was there last year. Hopefully they will be here again. Hopefully the button filler is not a limited edition.
Beautiful review and beautiful pen.
Thanks for sharing
I got a bit of sticker shock when I clicked the link and saw the price. Probably going to be a hard pass on this one, although I’ll be keeping my eye out for those black nibs. ;-)
I really like Esterbrook, but am not a fan of black pens. I have revisited this videocast a few times and have had to get on the notification list for the piston version. I am thinking with a stub nib, this would be great to use with those shimmer and chameleon inks in smaller quantities.
Thought about getting this pen, but ultimately decided against it. I told myself I didn't NEED it. There are other pens I want more lol Awesome pen though, just other pens out there I want more right now.
Defenestrating my resolution NOT to buy any new pens these calendar year, saw me plunging down $$ for the lower priced version of this model as soon as I saw it. Nice pen, nice Autopsy Mr. Doodle. Thank you for the fascinating review. Yeah, back to the tarnished resolution, and quoting Poe, "Nevermore!"
I always think about that Simpsons episode
That's a nice pen, I like how they made even the cap liner black. The filling system is essentially the as Parker's Vacumatic, no?
It "sounds" similar but I'd like to get a little wrench to pull it off to have a look
Great review, as always! I recently got my hands on the piston version and it's been a joy to use. I'm curious about one thing, though: Is the nib and housing interchangeable with Esterbrook's custom nib range, like the Journaler, Scribe, Needlepoint, and Techo? Specifically, I'm wondering whether the tube would fit and if the O-rings used in the nib housing are compatible with these custom options.
Yup you can swap them all around
The small tube reminds me of the filling systems in a Noodler's Ahab and Triple Tail. Would you happen to know what material is in that small tubing on the Esterbrook? By the way, what beverage would fill in that bottle? Thank you for your video presentation.
Not exactly sure what the precise makeup of the tubing material is
Sorry to post this question so late, but it's something I only now noticed. Why does the "Raven" pen (well mine does anyway) smell so peculiar when the cap is removed? Not nasty like some pens from India, but quite aromatic and mildly chemical in nature.
LOL no idea. I don't have the best sense of smell on a good day. When people complain about the Noodlers Ahab smell, I have no idea what they are talking about LOL
@@Doodlebud Ha-ha. I had to seal up my Ahab in two plastic bags and hide it in the recesses of the Crawl Space before it contaminated the entire planet.
Very nice pen indeed but I prefer a little color in my pens. That Estie you use for comparison is gorgeous.
Fine Writing International has two pens with a similar filling system. One is white with black and the other is primarily turquoise. They use Jowo #6 nib and cost about half the price.
The Estie Nebula was a color bonanza. Their Botanical Gardens or Rainforest might also appeal to you. I love my Esties!
This is a lovely pen…just love the mat-black nib and body. What is the pen made out of? Thanks for the review😊
Its an acrylic body pen
I’m bummed I didn’t get my hands on one of those before they sold out. I heard they would be back in stock by December.
Yeah I imagine they will have more coming
Looks like this pen was made especially for me ...
korax (κόραξ) means raven in ancient Greek.
I was waiting to hear from you on this one LOL
How much ink does the push piston hold? Did he say and I missed it?
I can try to do the measurment and update in the comments
I was surprised on how smooth the nib was when I got mine. Good video.
Yeah same here
Which black ink works best with visconti homosapiens?
I use all sorts of inks on the homosapiens. Just avoid shimmer inks in that pen and you should be good. Heavy sheening inks can be bad for dry up and clogging so might save those for converter style pens. But I use all sorts of inks in my mine and just enjoy using the pen.
I am curious to see this nib test, or find out the results. For what reason would this nib write better/smoother than the other Jowo nibs? Has a certain novelty I guess, but I found the highlight of the video was the Costco hot dogs for dinner tag. LOL
The nib has a PVD coating which also covers the tipping. So the feel is different since the contact surface is a little different than bare tipping. Slight changes in surface finish & surface energy of the contact point and its interaction with ink can change how a nib "feels." It does feel smoother than a regular SS nib. Video will be recorded this Thursday on location with the Vancouver Pen Club so will hope to have the video posted a few weeks after I record
@@Doodlebud Interesting you felt that way. Other videos over the years have noticed that the coating causing writing and flow issues. I can't remember if they said it was smoother, but many mentioned the coating being problematic.
@@ironmic9244 I wonder if it's the same coating. Some black nibs use a type of paint vs a pvd coating
@@Doodlebud Maybe. Maybe they've changed something. Who knows. I'll be glad to see what conclusions you guys come to. I kind of with they just called it the Stealth Estie. I really see no traces of the "The Raven", though The Pen Realm did engrave a raven on the nib for a limited amount of pens.
Is the piston made of plastic?
Costco hotdog for dinner!!!
A sad sad dinner LOL
So, it's sort of like a Parker Vacumatic?
Sort of but not 100% sure unless I remove the piston. I'll see if I can make a wrench for it
Maybe a Parker Vacumatic tool would be able to get it out although I wouldn't risk it.@@Doodlebud
1. Don't nib coatings generally wear off the nib tip? Making differences in performance cf. uncoated nibs short term?
2. I wonder if that matte black could be made a little darker.
3. Those pen cases are superb, a must-buy if you can afford them.
4. Thanks for the show.
The coating is PVD which is mega tough. I don't see it coming off. It would take years if not outlast the pen
@@DoodlebudI stand corrected. Maybe I was thinking of some other coating.
I Love a Matte Black Pen :) ❤
What is the cost
Esterbrook website has all the details
Not sure why the algorithm thought that I'd like to watch a review on a $150 pen when I can barely afford a Bic from the dollar store, but I have to admit that I still watched it till the end.
Well thanks for watching. If you ever wanted to try a fountain pen, here's one for like $5-$7 and its pretty damn good!
ua-cam.com/video/0q3W74S7btQ/v-deo.html
I'm one of those "must post" people. Probably because I have an irrational fear of loosing the cap of my pens.
Just hold the cap in your other hand. That's how I've done it since elementary school.
Nice review but no thank you.
Saw this on eBay for $200 - $250.
I bought a $20 lamy B in black and a jinhao 80 black with black trim and clip for $7 writes like a dream and for basically $30.
I have a Lamy Safari in charcoal. The flimsy plastic and narrow pinch grip is grating on me so I ordered the converter version of this.
I study by copying textbook verbatim, so I need something VERY comfortable and reliable.
I apologize for not clarifying myself. What I meant to say was that I purchased the nib and not the pen. I agree with you on the grip section. The jinhao 80 is much more comfortable.
It looks like it’s got a rubberized layer, if so I don’t recommend it. Depending on the environmental conditions (or simply some time period) it will deteriorate and become sticky and unusable. Not sure why manufacturers still use it. It may feel pleasant to the touch but it won’t last even if you keep it in a box. I don’t buy anything rubberized for this reason.
It's not rubberized it's a matte black paint coating, not rubber
Not a fan of a matte finish on pens or cars.
cringe with overly expensive metal nibs
It's a cool pen but hard to justify value wise.
@@shayrabstein3413 i stopped at this point buying anything that has yowo or Bock.
Ah-ha. But the price of everything is rising, plus the value of this pen is certainly not very revealing from a difficult to photograph image. Never-the-less, I, personally, had a "feeling" about this pen and was fortunate to be gratified on receipt. Somewhat a gamble to be sure.
@@philnaunton7181 sorry, but no excuse for this price point. at 200 euro you can get pilot custome 92. want something with interesting color and steel nib, buy narwhal or twsbi ,much cheaper than this
See I would love to agree with you, but it is a genuinely cool pen. Lemme check the price rq
Is it possible to provide info on the pen case in this video?
