Eric absolutely hit the nail on the head - you can not know who Sutekh is and totally appreciate the fact the magnitude of the reveal purely by the build up enough to know the impact of how much shit is about to hit the fan. Fabulous cliffhanger, RTD hasn’t lost his ability to build up a great finale.
49 years, fourty-nine years and my favourite death god is back. I got into Who as a kid watching my dad's VHSs and Pyramids of Death was either the second or third story I ever saw. As soon as I heard the voice earlier in the episode I immediately recognised Gabriel Woolf and basically exploded. I'm really interested to see how/if this reveal lands for viewers who aren't familiar with Sutekh.
I was not at all familiar with Sutekh when I watched, but I understood instinctively the moment the reveal happened that it had to be classic who coming back, and my hype level stayed at a 10. No dip. The ep did an incredible job building up and keeping the tension
Davina McCall was in "The Church on Ruby Road". She was the one trying to find Ruby's family using DNA. She actually hosts a real show and does that in real life.
I originally thought Sutekh attached to the TARDIS when the Doctor went back to save baby Ruby from the goblins. But people have pointed out that the TARDIS was making the weird noises all the way back in Wild Blue Yonder, which is also the first episode we saw Sue (talking to Isaac Newton)... so it's been longer than that. Gabriel Woolf is the original Sutekh, yes... but there's even more connections between Sutekh and the Beast from the Satan Pit. Not only is it the same actor, but the Beast said he had many names, including Satan... and in the Pyramids of Mars, they said Sutekh has many names, including Satan. So it's possible the Beast and Sutekh are somehow the same entity, the same being. Especially when you consider the way he puppeted Harriet was extremely similar to the way the Beast puppeted people in the Impossible Planet. I'm hoping Mrs. Flood is secretly Tefnut. She's not been in the Whoniverse yet, but the Osirans (the species Sutekh is) are the basis of the Egyptian pantheon in the Whoniverse. In the Egyptian myths, Tefnut is Sutekh's grandmother -- and the goddess of rain and humidity. Rain, flood? Connections? So she'd know when Sutekh was returning. Not to mention, that would also be a connection to Ruby, since a goddess of rain is the closest you get to a goddess of snow from a desert culture.
I would assume he's been there since pyramids of mars, no? Though I haven't seen the story so no idea if that would work. "The one who waits." implies to me he's been waiting a very very long time, otherwise it's not exactly a good title for a character in a show where the main character is thousands of years old. "Yeah I hunkered down for a few years, lotta waiting that!" Maybe vicinity to one of the Susans just set off his return. Or his invoking superstition again.
Sidenote: The Tardis made these groaning sounds as early as Wild Blue Yonder, so it would seem Sutekh "hijacked the tardis back than, and remember what 14 said. With the salt and that he fears he "summoned" something and the end of the Universe.
Someone else said when they spilled the salt in Wild Blue Yonder snd triggered the superstition that released Sutehk. It's also I think that is when we first saw Susan Twist.
Loved this reaction, so glad Calvin remembered who Sutekh was. Davina McCall hosts a show called Long Lost Family, which traces members of families that were separated for various reasons like adoption or moving to other countries and have become lost to time, there's also spin offs of the programme, one of which is Born Without Trace, that traces the birth families of foundlings, so that was the kind of programme that Ruby was on in The Church on Ruby Road with Davina McCall. Born Without Trace was the inspiration behind Russell T Davies making Ruby a foundling adoptee, on top of the fact that the Doctor is a foundling adoptee too. I was great that in the Time Window Ruby had someone by her side who completely understood her, and could feel her pain and desperation. As an adoptee myself, it made me really happy when Carla showed compassion and understanding to Ruby's birth mother, if that's who it is.
THAT EPISODE WAS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! This is a master class in how to build suspense perfectly! The music was amazing, the performance from everyone were amazing, the pacing was spot on, the mystery of Ruby Sunday and Susan Twist meshing together was spectacular, the Practical sets and makeup were top-notch, the CGI and VFX are the best Doctor Who has ever had, Ncuti keeps being a top tier doctor, and to be blunt this is the most fun I've had with a season of Doctor Who in a long time! 1000/10 episode! Bring on the season finale "Empire of Death" ASAP!
Fun fact: the place where they filmed the Rogue was the Orangery in Margam Park, Port Talbot, my home town. It is also the place where I had both my Covid Vaccine jabs.
My theory is Sutekh latched on to the Tardis during Wild Blue Yonder at the edge of the universe. That's when the Tardis first starting groaning, then the Doctor pouring the salt allowed him to latch on fully.
Finally some Sutekh respect!! 😂 I’ve seen so many people disappointed that it was not a Master reveal like that hasn’t been done to death! Let the old god have his time, I hope they make it cannon that he was the beast that fell through the black hole in the bitter pill!
The doctor told Ruby that a Timelord can change their face to hide away. Mrs. Flood then says she is always hiding herself away. Her door is tardis blue and in this scene, they wash her face with a tardis blue filter. She’s a Timelord. Susan? Rivers daughter? The Rani.. we’ll find out soon. As for Ruby.. I think she is a child of the pantheon like Maestro. Human-esque like the H-Arbingers.
I wonder too if she’s River, and SHE dropped Ruby at the church, and was pointing at Sekh (spelling?) to tell the doctor Ruby is the key to defeating him somehow. Also, I feel like Carol of the Bells could be significant, the carol is based on ‘Shchedryk’, an old Ukrainian song about a swallow…the English translation mentions a Master, and A wife, probably just reaching with that one lol
I really like how the fact the tardis is part of Sutekh’s plan now means they have no ‘safe place.’ Anymore. They can’t run and hide through time or space, at least, not very far, and the very thing the doctor spends a long time assuring the companion and the audience throughout the show is unbreakable and completely safe *becomes* part of the horror, it just cements the fact that they are not safe
I'm pretty sure the Tenth Doctor talked about having kids so there might be a bit of a retcon with the granddaughter thing. Or the Doctor was just making a point that it's not necessarily the case that he has kids
Ever since seeing Calvin’s reaction to Davros during the Stolen Earth, I was hoping we’d see a similar one for this episode! I love how now he’s just staring like “ask me. Ask me the question.” 15:05 XD
Various references in the episode: Kate addresses one UNIT character as Sullivan, a reference to Harry Sullivan, a 4th Doctor companion. Another UNIT character is Colonel Ibrahim, a reference to Sutekh's servant Ibrahim in _Pyramids of Mars_ (1975). Mel was of course a 6th/7th Doctor companion from 1986-87. The Toymaker appeared in _The Celestial Toymaker_ (1966) and _The Giggle_ (2023). The Trickster appeared in The Sarah-Jane Adventures three times from 2007-09, once with the 10th Doctor. The Mara appeared in _Kinda_ (1982) and _Snakedance_ (1983). The Doctor's granddaughter Susan was a 1st Doctor companion even before he left Gallifrey, before the show began, and left in _The Dalek Invasion of Earth_ (1964). And of course Sutekh himself. "I bring Sutekh's gift of death" is a direct quote from _Pyramids of Mars._
If you guys can, I HIGHLY recommend you see this week’s Tales of the Tardis! We have 15 and Ruby revisiting Sutekh’s first appearance in Pyramids of Mars. Even if you guys don’t do a reaction to it, it’ll give you a LOT of context to who Sutekh is! Loved the reaction guys!!
I appreciate that this new era is showing giving us alot more classic series elements that isn’t what you’d expect them to do We’ve had two villains come back who only made one appearance previously in the series and I’m glad RTD has gone with that cuz he could have easily just gone with the Daleks, master or Cybermen again I like Suteks design more then the classic series tbh, he looks more like an intimidating inhuman entity instead of just a guy in a costume and the voice is so cool I think he has latched onto the Tardis since Wild Blue Yonder
Here are my theories on Ruby and Mrs. Flood. I've thought from the Christmas episode that Mrs. Flood is Susan. And in this episode The Doctor says "We can change our face if we are dying. Or to hide away." Mrs. Flood says something like "It feels sometimes like I have been hiding away forever." =========================== I think maybe Ruby is the Eye of Horus made incarnate. Sutekh's prison on Mars was generated by the Eye of Horus. I think the others from Sutekh's world knew he was coming.
Davina McCall was indeed in the Christmas episode, The Church on Ruby Road. The episode with the Goblins that were causing Ruby to have lots of bad luck. She was the lady who also suffered bad luck after meeting ruby and ended up in a wheelchair. She was killed by a Christmas tree that the Goblins caused to fall on her until the doctor remembered and went back to save her from said tree. She hosts the UK version of Long Lost Family where they help people track down long lost relatives. Ruby was being filmed for a possible episode but they didn't find her mum.
23:23 Wait…. Wasn’t there an episode with Capaldi where in the opening a suggestion was made that there might be another entity inside the Tardis? I remember people theorising that it was the Silence…. It might have been Sutekh then…. 😳
Of all the classic villains I was hoping would come back, Sutekh was the one I wanted to see the most and even better that Gabriel Woolf came back to reprise his role at 91 years old.
Aside from the fact that "Sue Tech" is a homophone, not an anagram, that was such a fantastic build up and reveal. Felt like how the build up to the Simm reveal should have been back when, if the BBC hadn't spoiled that.
It may not be just your head canon. In the 50th special, when Ten, Eleven and the War Doctor are attempting to land at UNIT’s Black Archive, Eleven says some kind of block prevents the Tardis from landing, so that’s why they have to insert themselves inside the “Gallifrey Falls” painting to get inside. It would also explain why in The Giggle, Fourteen’s Tardis is flown over to UNIT by helicopter.
As someone who's seen most of the Big Brother UK series, I am familiar with Davina McCall. If you guys are interested, they did a mini series called Dead Set (mixing the zombie genre with Big Brother) ... It used to be on Netflix, not sure anymore.
Davina MacCall is a British TV presenter. She used to present the UK Big Brother and now she’s most famous for Long Lost Families where she reunites people who were adopted with their real parents
There was a lead in Maestro! When they were pulling that Christmas music out of Ruby and had that crazy reaction. They said, “I don’t understand. He wasn’t there.” Then later referenced the one who waits.
Mel spent time with the 6th and 7th Doctors All lost episodes are from the 1st and 2nd doctor, so the 60s stuff. Some has been found over the years and others have had animations made using the recorded audio that some people had made. Yes it's the same guy doing the voice of Sutekh that voiced him originally in thr 4th doctor story Pyramids of Mars. He is 92 now.
Having mccall does a show over in the UK called "Long Lost Family" which is a show that helps reunite families, hence why Ruby's character met her to try and find her mum
Mrs Flood actress Anita Dobson is married to Queen's Brian May - her hair was as big and curly as his in the 80s/90s. The Who Christmas special wasn't her only notable festive TV appearance. She was one of the early leads in British soap Eastenders which provides another of BBC's key Christmas specials. The Boxing Day episode in 1987 that centred around her character got over 30 million viewers and is still the most viewed episode of any British soap.
Oh boy I’ve been really really excited for this reaction to pop up. This was a really great story and I’ve got to talk about the ending cliffhanger because I went over the moon with hype. Sutekh is another villain from classic who, he first appeared in 4th doctor’s episode Pyramids of Mars, which was one of my early doctor who stories i remember as a kid borrowing at my local library during the wilderness years of Who. (Btw i was really looking forward to Calvin’s reaction because i might of guess he’d recognised Sutekh) But when he’s name dropped I went absolutely Ballistic with hype. I do love it when they bring back classic who villains into new who!
There's actually an early callback to Pyramids of Mars in The Devil's Chord. The scene where the Doctor brought Ruby back to the present day only for Earth to be a complete wasteland is basically a remake of the scene where the Fourth Doctor brought Sarah Jane back from 1911 (when Sutekh was about to break free) to 1980 when the Earth was dead because Sutekh hadn't been defeated yet.
I saw a video, might have been WhoCulture that said Sutek may have escaped his prision into the void we saw in Flux. Which is at the edge of the universe. In the 4th doctor episode "Pyrmids of Mars" Sutek was shown to do something to the Tardis, before being banished. So when the Tardis ended up at the edge of the universe in Wild Blue Yonder, it makes that wierd sound for the first time and that may have been when Sutek latched on to it.
A few things I've remembered since watching this episode. Tennant's doctor has mentioned twice (once to Rose, and once to Donna) that he has been a father before. Also he had the Jenny who ended up being revived and is out there somewhere.
The Trickster is a Sarah-Jane Adventures villain!! And in an episode with David Tennant when he meets the Trickster they talk about the Pantheon for the first time and set the whole story up with the rest of the gods! This was back in 2009!!
Devina mcoll after doing big brother also later did long lost family. Including helping foundlings find there birth parents. Its an actual thing irl. And she Bassically plays herself in doctor who helping Ruby find her birthmother like she does on long lost family. I was actually surprised to see her in the Christmas special. But yea I suppose outside of the uk you won't know who she is as well.
Sutekh definitely began seducing the TARDIS before Ruby's birthday. The first time the TARDIS groaned the way it did in this episode (as it has happened a few times over the season) is actually in Wild Blue Yonder shortly before it leaves Fourteen and Donna. Also may be worthy to note that there was a character played by Susan Twist in that episode interacting with Isaac Newton. Perhaps the change to "mavity" has some kind of role, but I think that has less of a chance of happening.
Calvin and I had the same reaction at the end of the episode. I couldn’t remember his name; but I had watched Pyramids of Mars when I was younger with my dad. So I knew who it was. Genuinely great twist
My theory: Sutekh attacked the TARDIS when it landed on the ship with the Not Things (Wild Blue Yonder), which is the 1st time the TARDIS moans & the last time the cloister bell tolls. I think the TARDIS ran away, trying to shake Sutekh, like it did Captain Jack. The Doctor says his children haven't been born, yet. Ruby's mother is "the Kind Woman" in next week's episode. She's River. Mrs. Flood is Susan. I void be wrong but Davies seems to be building the Doctor an extended family.
So apart from Sutekh, The Toymaker and Maestro two other villains were confirmed to be members of the Pantheon by Harriet. The Mara is a classic who villain which she called the god of beasts and The Trickster is a Sarah Jane Adventures villain, pretty much the at show's main villain, which she called the god of traps. That also mean the Pantheon as a group were first mentioned by the 10th Doctor in a Sarah Jane Adventures episode, The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith, when he revealed that The Trickster was a member of a group called the Pantheon of Discord.
There was also "The mother, father, and other of them all." possibly referring to "the other." I don't know if they're a villain, but I know they're mentioned in classic who. I don't really know anything about them other than some people think they might be the doctor, so there could easily be something in canon that renders my observation utterly pointless.
@@alansmithee419 it sounds she was talking about Sutekh. The Other was a planned storyline that never happened because of the classic series ending, the 7th Doctor's era was building up to it.
@@erg1947 I thought she said they were three gods immediately below Sutekh in the rankings? The father could be the toymaker for example, since we know he's Maestro's father, and certainly seems to be an important figure in the pantheon of discord.
Something I see with a lot of Americans watching doctor who, there are a lot, like a lot of passing remarks that are very British centric, and without the context it can feel like a mystery or something to think about. Like, Davina McCall, she’s a uk celebrity, voice of the big brother announcer and host of a show aiming to reunite adopted orphans with their biological parents, but lacking this cultural context, to some she may seem like a mystery character, or similar.
According to tardis fandom, Abena lived in a flat in the district, near the Catford Broadway. Jimmy Stone lived with Abena for a time, and was killed by Autons there after robbing Abena.Jimmy Stone was an ex-boyfriend of Rose Tyler by 2005.This was in a Doctor who novel named Rose according to it.There have been many callbacks to Rose tyler this season like calling from space the future.
During the rehearsal speach, when Sue complained about the chanting, they were chanting her company's name - "Sue Tech"! 😂 ...As an old school fan, I somehow missed that first time around!!!
The growling noise from the TARDIS that Sutekh made has actually been happening every so often since the start of Wild Blue Yonder, which is also the first episode where Susan Twist appears. So he's been here since at least that long ago, possibly longer.
@@SparkyClarke There is a tales from the tardis with an edited version of Pyrmaids of mars airing this week on BBC4 and iplayer in uk. Set aboard the memory TARDIS with the Doctor and Ruby
wait a sec didnt the Doctor kinda have a daughter and her name was Jenny from the 10th Doctor, she died in the episode but came back at the end and went off in space. maybe there trying to bring that up not sure if they want to go back far.
I didn't even think about it until you guys pointed out the Doctor's jacket but now I'm wondering if it's a callback to Christopher Eccleston? Or as Captain Jack Harkness once put it: "U-boat captain?"
Funnily enough, the Doctor has alluded to, or outright said he had children on multiple occasions in the past. One point where he outright says he was a dad to Rose was in 2x11 Fear Her. A bit of a continuity error there.
I think Russell T Davis soft-confirmed at some point that Sutekh and The Beast are one in the same. Not only do they have similar themes and are voiced by the same VA, but since The Beast described himself as the embodiment of evil itself across all religions, and Sutekh just listed off his various "death god" names across different pantheons, its safe to say they are essentially the same entity taking on different corporeal forms.
Davina McCall also hosts long lost family - where she & her team track down family for people in real life - whether orphans looking for parents or long-lost siblings etc. Hence Ruby going to her to find her Birth-Mum
Nobody seems to notice that Mrs Flood drops her east end accent for formal RP accent when her demeanour changes. She didn't just "Feel weird" she dropped the act completely including the accent.
the last time we saw Time Window was in the Time Lord's proper Time Window technology in season 9 ep 12, when 12th Doctor brought Clara 1 second before her moment of canon death.
I absolutely loved this whole episode, especially the Sutekh reveal at the end (“Pyramids of Mars” is one of my favourite Classic Who stories!). We’re actually getting a special “Tales of the TARDIS” episode this week (a BBC exclusive mini-series which, until now has featured past companions and Doctors reuniting to reminisce about past adventures). This time, it’s going to be the 15th Doctor and Ruby talking about Sutekh. But, the BBC have made a special remastered, feature-length cut of “The Pyramids of Mars” with new VFX, which’ll be shown as part of it. I don’t know if you’ll get it in the U.S.A. or not, but it’s on Thursday.😁👏
My thought was that she knows what a TARDIS is, but she didn't recognise a police box showing up in the middle of the pavement as one, so possibly someone with knowledge of timelords, but no experience with the Doctor.
Davina McCall is also a co-presenter of 'Long Lost Family', a series documentary where they help foundlings discover family members who abandoned them as babies.
As someone who grew up on Classic Who and with whom Tom Baker was my favorite incarnation of The Doctor till Matt Smith came along, I was floored. Pyraminds of Mars is by far one of the best of the Tom Baker era if not Who in general.

I remember the tardis groaning randomly in flux seemingly without reason and they said "it is sick"
Is it possible that was this?
Tenth Doctor comics has more information for you about the Osirans.
That would mean it has been there for like what, 3 years?@@SpookyShimmer
@@ThatCzechGuy he has been waiting
I would assume he's been there since pyramids of mars, no? Though I haven't seen the story so no idea if that would work.
"The one who waits." implies to me he's been waiting a very very long time, otherwise it's not exactly a good title for a character in a show where the main character is thousands of years old.
"Yeah I hunkered down for a few years, lotta waiting that!"
Maybe vicinity to one of the Susans just set off his return.
Except we saw Susan Twist just before already, with Newton. Mmmmhhh

Finally some Sutekh respect!! 😂 I’ve seen so many people disappointed that it was not a Master reveal like that hasn’t been done to death! Let the old god have his time, I hope they make it cannon that he was the beast that fell through the black hole in the bitter pill!

When Susan says "Did you think I was family, Doctor?" she really sounds like Madame Kovarian.
My hope is the Monk
MVP of this reaction. Calvin. His reaction at the sutekh reveal was awesome!
7:51 Time Windows are what connected the S.S. Madame de Pompadour to 18th century France.
I hadn't seen Pyramids Of Mars before this episode, but I was shook anyway. That noise the Tardis makes is so unnerving.
Yess I was waiting for Calvin’s reaction!
The TARDIS has been groaning since Wild Blue Yonder in the 60th anniversary specials!! It groaned in The Devil's Chord and in Rogue last week aswell
Various references in the episode:
Kate addresses one UNIT character as Sullivan, a reference to Harry Sullivan, a 4th Doctor companion.
I appreciate that this new era is showing giving us alot more classic series elements that isn’t what you’d expect them to do
We’ve had two villains come back who only made one appearance previously in the series and I’m glad RTD has gone with that cuz he could have easily just gone with the Daleks, master or Cybermen again
I like Suteks design more then the classic series tbh, he looks more like an intimidating inhuman entity instead of just a guy in a costume and the voice is so cool
I think he has latched onto the Tardis since Wild Blue Yonder
Here are my theories on Ruby and Mrs. Flood.
I've thought from the Christmas episode that Mrs. Flood is Susan.
And in this episode The Doctor says "We can change our face if we are dying. Or to hide away."
Mrs. Flood says something like "It feels sometimes like I have been hiding away forever."
===========================
I think maybe Ruby is the Eye of Horus made incarnate. Sutekh's prison on Mars was generated by the Eye of Horus. I think the others from Sutekh's world knew he was coming.
Ive literally been wanting to see Calvins face since Saturday 😂
I literally saw the playlist was "Updated Today" (Probably while uploading) and I was sat WAITING lmao.
Two things
1, we needed Eric yelling 'That f***ing sound!'
2, We need them to finish The Sarah Jane Adventures! It's the best part of the revival!
The tales of the tardis that just came out will give so much context. You should check it out, only 1hour ish, which for classic who is an ease.
When we think about it. What can annoy a god of death? A guy/species that merely can't really die and is basically immortal (or almost).
I know the Sutekh moment may not be understood the same by everybody, but it's still such a menacing moment.
this episode was so exciting to watch, i’m even more excited to see y’all’s reaction to it!
I like how calvin recognises and smiles when he knows who sutekh is, while rest of the crew are like who?

My head canon is that UNIT HQ is shielded from any arrivals through time, so the tardis has to make an aerial approach.
It used to be on Netflix, not sure anymore.
my theory is that Flood is a pantheon for destruction or something similar. Ms Flood is a interesting name choice
Davina MacCall is a British TV presenter. She used to present the UK Big Brother and now she’s most famous for Long Lost Families where she reunites people who were adopted with their real parents
It was a truly phenomenal episode! So glad you guys enjoyed!
There was a lead in Maestro! When they were pulling that Christmas music out of Ruby and had that crazy reaction. They said, “I don’t understand. He wasn’t there.” Then later referenced the one who waits.
Mel spent time with the 6th and 7th Doctors
All lost episodes are from the 1st and 2nd doctor, so the 60s stuff.
I love watching Calvin realise who was returning! Deffo brings memories of when he saw / heard the return of Davros in The Stolen Earth 😊.
The actor who played Sutekh originally is the same who voiced the Beast in the Tennant era, and at ninetysomething years he voices Suketh again
"You can call me Sue pet" Sue pet, Sutekh another hint the Dr. missed
You guys are hopelessly hilarious. Davina is the xmas tree lady
My theory:
Sutekh attacked the TARDIS when it landed on the ship with the Not Things (Wild Blue Yonder), which is the 1st time the TARDIS moans & the last time the cloister bell tolls.
I'm really hoping it's river, cause I will scream at the top of my lungs
But Susan Twist was spotted before they landed on the ship already because we saw her with Newton
@@Dndnerd591 I'd love it if she was. I don't think she is.
@@alansmithee419 no she didn't say that until she started talking about Sutekh. Besides, she'd already mentioned The Toymaker.

The growling noise from the TARDIS that Sutekh made has actually been happening every so often since the start of Wild Blue Yonder, which is also the first episode where Susan Twist appears. So he's been here since at least that long ago, possibly longer.

Someone in another reaction channel pointed out that the CCTV camera was 66 metres from Ruby's mother... 66 metres is 73 yards!
Davina McCall is just a cameo - she has hosted TV shows in the UK for decades (especially the kind that would interview someone like Ruby)
