    I'm finally getting around to playing with my Clearpaths, so thanks so much for the wiring diagram. :) Eventually they will find a home on a ZYLtech hypercube.

    Nice one, very well explained 👍. I run my Masso on 24v as the inductance proximity switches suffered voltage drop when going through the opto-couplers

    • @TabletopMachineShop
      @TabletopMachineShop  7 років тому +1

      Hmm I'm thinking of switiching to proximity or hall effect sensors, so that's good to know. I do have a wimply little 24V power supply (1 or 1.5A) but I wasn't sure it would have enough power to run my tool turrets...

    • @DCT_Aaron_Engineering
      @DCT_Aaron_Engineering 7 років тому

      Yeah I think my transformer is only 1.5amp but I don't have anything sucking power from them.

    Careful. Ground and com are different things for ac current.

  • @AndersJackson

    You might want to consider Voltage convertes if the devices driven by it are not drawing to much current. Then you save yourself a power supply.

      That sounds sweet, let me know how it works! The price tag on Masso was worthwhile to me because I'm nearly computer illiterate :P

    Qurstion: around 11:30 you said something like if you need +5v you need another power supply - so you can't use the +12v and throw a lm317 on it to get the +5??? It HAS to be separate???
    Inquiring minds wanna knonw!!!

    Maybe a voltage regulator can be an alternative to multiple power supplies?

    • @TabletopMachineShop
      @TabletopMachineShop  7 років тому +1

      Yeah, you'd need a really beefy one though -- probably a buck converter. The problem is that I still need a few amps of 12V for accessories and things.

    HEY! I am trying to wire this up as we speak, but I cannot get the relay outputs to work. When they're high, I get 1/2 a volt, low I get .02. I'm using a 12VDC 10A meanwell power supply so I SHOULD be getting 12VDC out right? Everything else works. The relays work as I've jumpered power to their inputs and they responded. Any help would be great. Thanks!!!

    • @TabletopMachineShop
      @TabletopMachineShop  6 років тому

      Hmm sounds like youve taken all the steps i would have... maybe the optocoupler is defective? You could try changing it with another one (theyre in sockets on the PCB) and seeing if that works

    • @TabletopMachineShop
      @TabletopMachineShop  7 років тому +1

      It's normally X and Z on the lathe: Z is typically parallel to the spindle, and X is the next longest axis of motion. Also, on lathes, +Z and +X move away from the spindle. You should upload some videos of your machine when it's ready!

    Not a linear supply. It is class D switch mode. Not to confuse viewers. I do not recommend buying the cheap supplies coming in from China.

    Is it possible to connect a 4 axis with angular division since in the manual I have not seen if it is possible ?, I would appreciate your answer since I am deciding the purchase of the data acquisition card. And from what I see the MASSO card approaches my requirements.
    Es posible conectar un 4 eje con división angular ya que en el manual no he visto si es posible?, agradecería su respuesta puesto que estoy decidiendo la compra de la tarjeta de adquisición de datos. Y por lo que veo la tarjeta MASSO se acerca a mis requerimientos.

  • @paulb8264
    @paulb8264 7 років тому

    Wow. These have dropped way down in price since I first heard about them. If I remember correctly they were ~$1500 when they first hit the market.
    What is the difference between the models? Lathe vs Mill vs Plasma other than the number of axes that is? Are they software setup to only drive the corresponding machine or is it possible to change up the software to use the Masso across platforms?

    • @TabletopMachineShop
      @TabletopMachineShop  7 років тому +1

      +Paul B I think theyre physically identical, the only difference seems to be the firmware

      Yes all the units have the same hardware. We have different software versions for different machine types and they can be updated anytime via email.

      Cool. I kind of figured the hardware was the same and it was a matter o software changes. I just wasn't sure how free you were to switch between them.

    So with the Masso for a CNC router i dont need some steppers motors DRIVERS ? Juste a 24v & 12v Pow Supplies ,screen,,keyboard , G code & Estop for the basic setup ,is that right ?.....Great video by the way ! I'm sorry for the annoying question but i try to make my self a idea but every videos i watch are different ,one guy says i need stepper driver ,a other one says no ,one says i need only one 24 powSupply and you say two ? I'm really lost right now but i have no choice bc its to much expensive to by a full cnc kit(plug & play)of a good quality/size . I'm building one my self but its just the electronic part that i'm lost du to different videos i did watch ?

    • @TabletopMachineShop
      @TabletopMachineShop  6 років тому +1

      Hi Martin,
      No worries about asking questions!
      For Masso for a router you will need:
      -Stepper motors
      -Stepper motor drivers
      -A power supply for your motors
      -A power supply for Masso (5-24V)
      -A keyboard
      -A screen
      -Some kind of CAD/G-Code software
      Each motor requires a driver and the drivers all need power from the motor power supply. The motors I used are called Clearpath motors and have a driver hidden inside of them. The motor power supply typically supplies 24 or more volts and lots of current. If you use a 24V motor supply, you can power Masso with the same supply. This would be a big advantage because it means you only need one power supply, BUT power supplies with a lower voltage cannot run motors as fast. My motor supply is 82V, which would kill the Masso. That is why I needed a second power supply - one to drive my motors really fast and one to power Masso.
      Another consideration is that if you want to have accessories (Lights, coolant pumps, etc) they need an appropriate supply as well. It's unlikely these accessories would need high voltage (more than 24V), so it often makes sense to run them off of the Masso supply. This means that the Masso supply has to be able to supply enough current.
      I don't know what you already have, but if I could make some recommendations:
      -A Masso (Controller)
      -A Geckodrive G540 (Driver - one G540 can drive 4 motors)
      -One 24V power supply
      -NEMA23 Motors
      -You will need connectors and things too, but Masso and Geckodrive both have really good manuals
      If this is your very first machine, it might make sense to get some NEMA17s, a TinyG board (drivers are built in) and just play around with those for a bit until you are confident that you have the system figured out. Masso isn't the cheapest way to start, but I would say it's probably the least amount of troubleshooting compared to PC based systems.
      I hope that helps, and feel free to email me at hlaps1990@gmail.com if you have more questions!
      Greg

      Man, you dont know i much it help me ,i understand now, clear it is haha ! you'r the first to explain it to me simple like that, nowwwwww,i know were i am going !!! I didn't start my project right now ,it will be a OX workbee 1000x15000 project and the kit come with 4 nema 23(dual y) and i'll probably bye a Bush or Makita spindle for now that it plug on the wall but i will install some stop sensors as well so for that i guest i will need a extra PS or i can plug them lets say with my motors on a 48Volt ps ? Thank you very very much !!! P.s i'll get your E-Mail for further question or more ,thanks again !

      -Oh and can i use my iPad as a touch screen via wi-fi (with the chip) ?
      - What kind of software do you suggest (simple as possible) for cad/g-cod to fit with Masso ?
      - If later i want to ad a lather(4th axi) can i just bye the extra driver and plug it with the others ? Thanks again !!!

    • @TabletopMachineShop
      @TabletopMachineShop  6 років тому +1

      Hi Martin,
      It's pretty unlikely your limit switches will be able to handle 48V, but you could look at getting a "buck converter" if you just have a few little accessories and want to run them off the motor power supply.
      I've never heard of someone using an iPad. I think they're pretty locked up so it's hard to use them for projects. You'd have to see if Masso would support such a thing. I think they can do touch screens, so maybe there's a way of doing it.
      I would suggest Fusion 360 for CAD and CAM (G-code generation). It's not free -- it's about $300USD per year I think, but you can often get it on sale for much less.
      If you want a fourth axis, you would need an extra driver, yes.
      Hope that helps too!
      Greg

      For the IPad, i heard from them in one video that the wi-fi coud be read by a IPhone(looks better for selling maby) anyway i will given it a try and if its working, fine, i 'll spread the word and if not ,just a screen & keyboard will do just fine . Thanks you again Greg ! I'll keep you in touch .

    hi, great video!! will be the same with any controller for 3d printers? most have the 4 pins for the external driver...
    the V+ and V- from the 8 pin connector need power from IPC too or any psu will be ok? any chance to get from patreon the wiring for that? dummies version of course... ahahahahahah

    • @TabletopMachineShop
      @TabletopMachineShop  7 років тому

      I believe the V+ (or V- depending on if your pins go high or low) can get its power from any PSU -- the only thing that needs IPC power is the motor power pins, which are on a different connector. I'll certainly see what I can do about a wiring diagram :P

    It’s true, no usb included. Make more wasted time searching how to. Bad point for masso. Second complaint, no main paper work for basic instructions, then after al the steps for downloading the software, didn’t work. After a ticket number turn, they answered change the different usb brand and try again the download.. to many turns.

  • @ryanleslie7425
    @ryanleslie7425 7 років тому

    Be careful which USB stick you use for loading the firmware onto the MASSO. I was having issues with my initial firmware load, and this was entirely to do with the fact that the USB stick I was using was junk. Not sure why the MASSO was having issues with the "cheapie corporate promo" USB stick... but everything loaded well when I tried with a name brand stick

    • @TabletopMachineShop
      @TabletopMachineShop  7 років тому

      I'm using one I dug out of a drawer and it seems to work well, but it happened to be a name brand. I definitely think they should include one to avoid the user having to mess around with different sticks until they find one that works!

      Yes! I thought I was going crazy trying to get a USB stick to work. Finally, the stick I used was 32G cheap-o formatted to FAT32 (this was essential). I explains this well in the documentation, but finding a smaller memory stick that would accept the FAT32 formatting was a bit challenging. Note to MASSO: Including a USB stick might greatly enhance user experience.

      Just for the electronics? Masso was like $600, Big PSU was $200, small PSU was $40, Assorted wiring and connectors were like $20, I already had a monitor and VGA cable and keyboard but you could probably get all of those for like $100... call it $1000?

    thing with masso is you buy lathe or router. its same with diff firmware. thats why havent buy.
    would be nicer it works for both.i not care if it would cost 2x more if it have both.DID SOMEONE GET IT.they sell 1 item for 2x price and you get 2 usb key lol.
    or they sell 2 item cost same.
    why i need 2 controller? its waist of everything sell 2 same kind when it can be with 1
    so firmware should be like 50 or something to change it from lathe to router.its meaningless when its actually free, but ANOITHER what ever it cost. no thx. i can build raspbnerry pi controller cheaper boot up 5 second or custom app lol
