  • Are you looking for the most realistic drift cars on Assetto Corsa? In this video I talk about the car packs I think are most realistic from my experience moving from Assetto Corsa to real drifting. I cover some of the more popular car packs including World Drift Tour, Gravy Garage, and Tando buddies ranking them from best to worst. If you're looking to use Assetto Corsa to learn how to drift in real life, or if you just want to drift with the most realistic cars in game, this review should help point you in the right direction.

    My Story *********************
    In 2022 I purchased a 2007 Nissan 350z to start attending my first drift events, and I've learned quite a bit along the way. The community has been great and I'd very much like to pay it forward and help anyone looking else looking to get into drifting for the first time. Any burning questions as someone wanting to learn how to drift? Send them my way and I'll either respond or cover in a future video.

    When I'm running some lower horsepower tracks, I love the Gravy Garage pack. But when I join a big tandem server where we're running FD layouts, Vdc is my go-to. Great video man. It took me a long time to enjoy the low horsepower car packs mainly because the car i learned to drift on Assetto Corsa was 1100hp, so I kinda developed that mindset of "it has to be high horsepower or I cant drive it". Really glad I got away from that, sometimes simple seat-time is better than hold on for dear life and be prepared to lose it at any second lmao

      I might be wrong because I have so many mod packs by now but I think I've just been drifting the VDC Chaser all day yesterday.
      I don't drift in real life - I don't even drive in real life - so my judgement on which packs are most realistic probably isn't vey accurate. But I can judge which car packs are most difficult, and they are definitely the grippier high power cars. The really snappy ones. And VDC's cars are pretty snappy. You have to be really responsive with your steering input when transitioning and when holding a drift, but when you're not even steering anymore on Tsuchisaka, just letting the back end flick out and catching it with the throttle time after time, it's thrilling.
      On a side note, I've still not found a single Toyota Chaser drift car that I haven't enjoyed. Something about that car's proportions seems to make it a joy to handle.

    Cool comparison and edit, GLWV!
    I wonder what camera / display setup did you use for the comparison?
    Wondering since monitor 3rd person vs VR for instance does a lot to how realism is perceived.

    • @JankyDrift
      @JankyDrift  Рік тому

      I drift in cockpit view, the 3rd person footage is recorded afterwards from the replays. For the real life footage I've got a few gopros that I setup separately and edit it all together.

    • @OctavChelaru
      @OctavChelaru Рік тому

      @@JankyDrift Good times, cockpit is the hardest but most realistic. I imagine you use a wide monitor or tripples, not VR. I found that the perceived realism shifts quite a bit between 2D and 3D, especially when you drill down the finer details of handling. I would also argue that there is a realism fidelity chain (wheel, display, settings, lack of Gs etc.) for each set-up which, compounded, makes achieving close perceived realism a very subjective thing.
      I have yet to find a pack that feels properly realistic for a Silvia so I made my own physics and tyre model, got closer but still not there. Got a motion rig, tuned that and it got closer but still no spark. In my investigations with some heavies on the physics side, it seems the tyre model capabilities is where most of the limitations lie for the AC engine is this regard. It's crazy that for me - IRL Pro drifter for 12 yrs, ex. VDC driver - and a few others like Taylor Ray for ex, LFS still feels sooo much closer to reality, seemingly effortlessly. Sadly nobody's doing LFS anymore so that's that but still annoying it can be done but not in AC.
      I had a S13 and S14 SR IRL, you'd be surprised at how much you get to keep it flat and planted. Realism is not twitchyness, but also not 7 meters long physics models like Tando Buddies.
      WDTS is still one of the best packs I tried so far as realism, bit too soft and easy but decently close if the cars all have proper angle kits installed. I wouldn't call it realistic by any means but it's good enough and better than most, that's why pretty much any experienced sim drifter suggests them as a starter pack.
      Looking forward to your next vids, excuse the long message but, perhaps, it could be helpful to share another perspective on the matter.

I started to learn how to drift on Assetto Corsa using the 90's Golden Drift Spot Project tracks. So far what I've gathered comparing the WDT Street pack, the Excite pack seems a bit trickier to drift, but even more fun, though I don't know how realistic the pack is. Thank you. Cheers!

      Excite isn't my favorite, but it's a decent pack. To me it felt like there was a lot of snap oversteer, which could maybe be because they don't have as much steering angle as I'm used to, but overall I'd call them realistic.

    Baker Workshop Raijin S15, paid mod, but this is by far my all time favourite car to drift with after nearly 4 years of sim drifting, feels amazing on my Simucube 2 and the grip level and transition speed translates good to my irl S13.
    Most realistic, and best drift car/pack is all subjective preference though, and no matter how good a car will feel to you and your setup, there will always be someone that will disagree with you and think a different pack or whatever is better.

    This is a pretty good list, although I would personally change a few things and add a few different packs. I'm glad to see DWG getting some love.
    I agree about putting DWG at the top, but it's a bit car-specific. The newer DWG cars like the S13s are absolutely fantastic, but some of their older cars are quite bad.
    Tando buddies, on the other hand, is the absolute worst drift pack I've ever used. I wouldn't even put it on this list lol.
    *My list would look like this:*
    1) DWG (Just as good as Excite, but with slightly different handling characteristics)
    2) Excite (Very flickable and realistic imo, but I wish they were a bit more planted at times)
    3) Gravy Garage (Good physics, but they feel a bit floaty and arcadey. Also have too much steering lock)
    4) WDTS (Way too forgiving and uninvolving, but great for beginners. Very consistent physics, which makes them great for tandems)
    5) Drift Workshop (One of my old personal favorites. I feel bad putting it in 5th place, as the physics are really good, but they are old cars now)
    6) Fumi (Great handling cars, but they have way too much steering lock and the physics can be funky)
    *Honorable mention:*
    Aiden's S13 (Absolutely fantastic car. The physics are almost up there with DWG, but it's not part of a pack)
    *As for packs I don't recommend:*
    DTP (horrible cars. these were the tando buddies cars of 2017/2018 lol, although tando buddies is still somehow worse)
    Tando Buddies (🤢)
    Arch cars (broken since CSP 1.74)
    VDC
    Some of the old DWG cars
    Tsujigiri (Mainly because of the understeering characteristics you mentioned. They are a lot like Tando in that sense, and it's quite unenjoyable for me)
    Edit - I should mention that I drift with a direct drive wheelbase, so I can really feel the differences in physics and handling (especially Tando 🤢 lol)

As far as packs I chose, I basically searched for the "most realistic" or "best" car packs on Facebook/Reddit and these seemed to be the most frequently mentioned. Definitely saw excite and a few others but they seemed to be more fringe recommendations. I'll have to give some of those a shot.
      If I'm honest I primarily drift that DWG 350z as it's been a great tool to learning my actual drift car. Wish there were more active DWG lobbies as I've recently been focusing more on practicing tandem, and WDTS/Gravy seem to be the forced choice since they're the easiest to find populated servers.
      Funny you mention Gravy Steering angle, I said that in the initial edit of the video but couldn't tell if it was just a visual thing (the front wheels look like they're hitting 90 degrees) so I cut from the final. And yes Tando is garbage to me but people like them and I was trying to be nice lol.
      Appreciate the detailed reply!

    I actually got into drifting via....Forza Horizon :) . I saw everyone doing it whenever I went online, and I'd tried it a few times and failed and was a bit intimidated, so I just sat down and practised drifting a Hoonicorn around the roundabout halfway up the motorway in FH4. From that point onwards the way I played the game completely changed. I just started drifting everywhere. The way I looked at the map changed. And two years later I bought a gaming PC and a wheel and pedal setup specifically for Assetto and its drifting scene.
    I don't think it matters how you get into drifting, and Horizon's drifting physics are so well judged that I've been able to transfer a surprising amount of it into AC.

    2 questions: isnt gravy garage have a little to big angle of steering wheels, it look like cars form CarX , or like a broken wheel to me, in other hand WDT have more realistic look of wheel angle..idk...And why would i need a handbrake, if i must to hold the clutch every time i pull the handbrake, the clutch kick do the same thing no?

    • @JankyDrift
      @JankyDrift  Рік тому

      Gravy Garage does have a ton of angle, but supposedly it's realistic to some of the angle kits that are actually available for those cars (wisefab). Either way you can definitely learn a bunch on either pack.
      Handbrake isn't necessary but it's nice to have. Ideally you should be able to drift without the handbrake, I mostly use mine to help correct angle, especially when I'm at a high rpm and clutch kick will have less effect. Both techniques add angle, but I would say the main difference is that clutch kick causes an increase in speed while handbrake slows you down. With that in mind, handbrake is a lot more useful for fine adjustments during tandem where clutch kick might propel you too much towards the person you're following.
      Side note: How did you get your game fixed? If I'm remembering correctly.

    Excellent video. Although prepare yourself for toxicity - this subject inspires so many arguments, because no-one wants to believe that the cars they've spent months trying to tame are the dumbed down baby's-first-steps cars for beginners.
    I only drift the high power ones, IDK why, so for me the most realistic(by which I mean 'trickiest', because let's face it, none of us know how an 1100hp Formula Drift Dodge Viper handles irl) car packs in the 700-1200bhp range are VDC, DCGP, FDAC(a step more powerful and unforgiving than the previous two packs) and a few others whose names escape me. They are all pretty grippy, which means they slip out of drift easily, so you have to be precise and quick with your inputs, and they are all ridiculously powerful, which means you have to just send it and hang on, there's no way to drift any of them conservatively.
    The middle rung would be Doorbreaker'z, which have some tricky ones and some ridiculously easy ones(also has the best sounding drift car in any game, ever, the 1JZ from the Evo 3 pack), and maybe World Drift Tour, although maybe that should be in the lower rung.
    The lower rung would be ACDFR, which have a lot of floaty, un-snappy cars that give you lots of time to react(although their latest car pack feels improved, so maybe they took some of the criticism on board), and Disturbing Tha Peace, for similar reasons. I think DTP's R32 was the first car I ever drifted in on AC. I used to use it a lot, then started trying out harder and harder cars. And I recently went back to the R32 after a long time and it was sort of ridiculous. It was like drifting in bullet-time. Pretty boring tbh.

      Whenever I ask these people how they know they always say 'my cousin is a pro-drifter' or 'my friend is a e-sports racer'. One guy's argument eventually came down to 'I once sat in my brother's Skyline'.
      The internet is a place where the people who know the least and shout the most dominate. And it should always be a bit suspect when so many people have an opinion on whether a 1000 hp Formula Drift car handles correctly given that there are only about two or three people in real life who've ever driven it. There's only a tiny number of people who've ever drifted ANY kind of car with that horsepower. I just watched a video of Nico Rosberg trying to drift his 2000hp Rimac and he spun out immediately.

    As one of the creators of the Tando buddies I will tell you a fun story. They were made at the time when only SDC and DTP cars were your options. the DTP missile came out and felt the best so we used that as a base and made private cars for our private group of friends ALL real drifters and currently now some Even Pro drivers. We made them the same minus wheel base to level the playing field for our private fun comps, and at the time they felt the best with our crappy rigs like old Logitechs etc. Of course slowly people gave them out and eventually it was pointless to keep them private. not soon after we added better tires "tovey tires" and added some boost but never updated the pack because the Sim drifting community is literally 90% know it all children and we got bad tastes in our mouths and said FK em. funny thing is they still hold up today with the mods but there is definitely better feeling packs!!. Also just going to throw in my two cents, You cannot rank something that is based off of the human brains perception. It is impossible!! and WAY to many variables with gear/setup etc. but the most important is the brain!!! you could get in my rig and drive a car I perceive feels exsactly like my real drift car, then go really drive my drift car and it could feel NOTHING like my sim setup to you. This needs to be more understood as it's giving those "bad habits"

    • @JankyDrift
      @JankyDrift  Рік тому +2

      It's funny I've had a few mod creators comment on this video now, it's always interesting to hear the context. When I originally put this video together I was trying to be more sensitive to folks who might like Tando and similar packs. So the message wasn't "they suck" or anything along those lines, just that they're not entirely realistic and there are better packs if you're looking for realism. And I think that's fair to say for Tando especially with all the packs that have come out in recent years.
      To your point, some folks get overly-passionate about this and as a result there have been a few comments I've had to delete.. Like with anything else in life this comparison is more shades of gray instead of black and white, but some folks don't entirely grasp that concept lol. You can learn real life driving skills from pretty much all cars packs out there, some better than others.

      @JankyDrift oh believe me I've seen the passion lol it really turned us off as a whole when we were modding like crazy the funny thing is if the community wasn't so negative we probably would of kept modding and gave out and made more realistic mods. I think about that from time to time what we would of ended up making. currently I still make tracks for the fun of it and mainly for myself and group of friends. But I'm definitely an advocate for pushing the understanding of how different everything is for sim drifting. I have several IRL drivers that will say a tando car drives exsactly how their car really does and its wild to me as I think they are super ice skates now but if they perceive it that way then technically that's their best option for practice. personally I have never found any mod to feel real yet, but I'm looking for something we won't have for awhile if at all with this old outdated game engine all the mods just slide all the time like none of them drive like real cars where you could just grip race them as well. part of me wants to start messing around again but another part of me wants to try other game engines that are not SO old and based on old physics engines lolol keep shredding duder, also just a FYI when I type I loose all emotion and can read blunt and negative that is not my intention!! just wanted to tell you the story as you seem like someone that would be entertained by it and understand.

      The only time you should really be muscling back to center is when you're coming out of a drift and trying to straighten out. Ive been looking for the most true to real life c6. . My fav at the moment is the WDT c6 corvette, just turn the turbo off b/c hp is too much. I tried the same with the VDC 3.0 c6 and the car felt good just difficult af.

      WDT is the most realistic feeling one I've come across, though take that with a grain of salt as I've never drifted a corvette IRL. I adjusted the cars actual engine/power file to remove turbo, obviously you wouldn't be able to use that in online lobbies.

      Really worth an upgrade to at least the T300 when you can swing it. Makes a world of difference having that faster rotation. Been there though lol.

      try custom LUT file for g29. to make steering more linear this helped me a lot. secondly, do yourself a favor and start out on 540deg of rotation.
      also, i use completely different settings for drift than those for gt driving. less force almost 0 damping ... but the lut file is where the magic is at on g29 g920

    Tando Buddies is surely what I consider "a gateway" to Assetto drifting, so are "easy to drift car packs" like the old ADC 420/300 car pack and GaYa.
    WDT Street, on the other hand, is the other gateway pack I would recommend. It's a great car to start drifting with, while it still gives you a challenge in controlling it.

      I feel like that's true with a lot of packs. Unless youve got a ton of torque you really need to be carrying a bunch of speed/momentum in 3rd to not have the car fall on its face. Not too many tracks where I hit 3rd at the moment.
