I'm a big fan of the MPE experience. I used to have a Linnstrument200 - very expressive piece of hardware. Now, I'm fully immersed in the Hydra..... Very deep. Nice that you're taking the time to walk people through this, as there are a lot of people out there, who've never had this experience personally.... I've seen a few people using the Sensel Morph set ups, very interesting.. I think you've done a killer job of showing the potential of this amazing duo of real time expressive capabilities....Great upload,, thanks
So far, the only thing that looks a bit frustrating to me, is that if you use multiple Morphs, the 'keyboard' overlays have a gap between notes, potentially making it difficult to play chords, etc. Not a big deal, but potentially an issue...
This is soooo inspiring!! Thank you Sarah!!! I finally got my Kenton from Perfect Circuit, the mail person "left a note", was sitting in the post office for days...for anyone that is new to both Morph and Hydrasynth as I am, I will point out that Sarah first chooses the OSC1 button (far left) to get to the Wavescan Screen and then Mod Matrix button (far right). Don't forget to give the delay somewhere to go...I know this patch is good because Pickles started honking his rubber pig along!!
As an old man trumpet player and synth geek, I was delighted to see your video! Ha! My Steiner EVI was pretty cutting edge in ancient times. :) Great video!
@@sarahbellereid I will watch anything you put out! Jeff Kaiser was my first trumpet teacher in sixth grade. I think you guys may know each other but I'm not positive. Anyway, love your stuff.
I recently bought the Roli Studio Player, on sale for $40 through Plugin Boutique, and discovered MPE. And as a studio geek and an FX junkie I fell over ga-ga with it's potential. And it just so happens that Hydrasynth is on my shortlist. Thanks for your superb info and presentation. I'll be watchin' you.
This was awesome... Very informative. I just got a hydrosynth, didn't know about the morph actually. Thanks and would love to see more videos exploring this combo!
This is a great explanation - thank you! I have the Hydrasynth and I'm interested in microtonal playing, so this Morph thing is something I'm going to need to check out.
Great introduction Sarah,, I didn’t realise how detailed the Sensel could be in assigning parameters. Is it possible that there would be , i.e. 12 parameters per sensor, that break the Y - Axis up with more fields that can crossover to add another dynamic to the pad... eg. Splitting the pads Y Axis into 8 assigned regions to extended multi morphing on/off performance, then the right side equivalent/mirrored sensor may be a more angled inversion of the functions.
I don’t believe you can get quite that detailed on the pre-fab overlays (unless you run the data into another program like max and then do your conditioning/parsing) but... you should check out the “innovators overlay” because it allows you to make custom overlay designs and layer different things on top on one another... maybe a good topic for a future video?
Sarah Belle Reid , AHA... I’m not a programmer, but I like customisation of you gals and guys that do the ground work, thanks. You open my eyes to the potential of Sensel morph, I hope they get you into future advert to spread the Gospel of MPE . I love sound & sound design, Im recently being braver ( less lazy ) and enjoying the performance of getting to a sound, getting the parameters of new sounds to be a part of the performer, the dialogue of one being the sound. I guess we all look forward to your tutoring on how one extends this to the surround sound . Light bulbs in space . I’m so glad you are doing this series, thank God for your many gifts..... especially innovation.
Fantastic video and thank you. I have been researching MPE for some time and I'm just about to make the leap with the Sensel. This video cinched it for me as before I was leaning towards the Roli but this fits my brain better as primarily I am a drummer, bassist, guitarist. I'm subscribing and will check out your music. I think it's in alignment with where I'm coming from.

nice breakdown on MPE with the Morph - I've been usimg various Roli product for years for MPE but haven't setup my Morph for that yet - I was using it wit Premiere and Photoshop. :-) I just got the Hydrasynth keyboard and I'm going to try the Morph with it as well as my Seaboard Ruse 49 - thanks again unrelated trumpet question - what do you think of the trumpet/wind alternatives like the Steiner EVI, Morrison Digital Trumpet, or the more recent Yamaha EZ-TP or the Sylphyo (with trumpet fingering)? seems like a lot of cool options now for "wind" and "brass" MIDI fun I used to play trumpet and euphonium in 5th/6th grade, and violin in the 4th grade - now I'm a synth/keys guy but I like the alternative controllers like the Sylphyo I just got and the old Casio MIDI sax/various breath controllers, and the theremin
I was eyeing the sensel morph for a while. Still new to a lot of this so figuring out what I like. I did see Ableton 11 has MPE and it lets you go back and edit it afterwards. You could do a performance recording everything there and then do like a live playback of the doctored data to get a recording, or loop those gestures. Might be cool.
Just by way of pedagogy, the Ensoniq company made several MPE-capable synths in the early '90s!! Also, the most recent collection of synths from DaveSmith/Sequential are capable of receiving MPE (I have an OB6 and it works)
Very cool stuff Sarah! I just got my Thunder and seriously want the Hydrasynth. I'm curious which software instruments (not DAWs) are your fav to use with the Thunder? I use Ableton exclusively and obv it's not MPE compatible so I'm considering running Kontakt with software like Slate and Ash alongside it until I get some hardware....Would love to know your thoughts!
Thanks Laura! So far I have mostly been using the Morph with Max/MSP and hardware instruments... but I have been wanting to try it out with Madrona Labs software instruments (Aalto and Kaivo).. seems like those would be super fun too. Maybe something to explore? :)
Hey Laura. Some of our favorites are Aalto, as Sarah mentioned, Quanta by Audio Damage, and Falcon by UVI. All of them are fantastic! There's an expansive list of Soft synths on ROLI's MPE page: roli[dot]com[slash]mpe. Or you can just talk to Peter and he'll tell you everything you need to know. 😃
As usual, great video Sarah ! Yes I was totally wondering about this sort of controller (Senel Morph and ASM Hydrasynth), I've seen it in on quite a few of the Buchla 203 performances including yours and Steve H. I'm going to be doing pitch bend with the upcoming Joyst-JV1 that's being created in Ireland as a sort of game joystick accordion. I can also do some pitch bending with the Atriphon Orba, which btw got me hooked on creating digital music. My friend Chris actually builds the software for the Orba, yeah small world...we met via Soundcloud while I was digging his music. I need to learn more about MPE, I believe it has touch gestures like vibrato and radiate. I am curious to how much further you were able to explore with the Morph and your Eurorack.
Thanks Milo! I’ve definitely had a lot of fun exploring the combo of morph and Eurorack. I haven’t published anything yet with Eurorack but I did recently do a video with perfect circuit (on their channel) where I use the morph with a buchla easel command. Happy exploring!

Thanks for any help :) other than that it sounds beautiful and every synth th needs to be designed this way - very intuitive.
What do you use to interface between the device and the Hydrasynth? I have the HS module and I use Ableton to send MIDI to it via an "external instrument" plugin. I just borrowed my friend's Roli Seaboard and I can send MIDI regularly but when I switch the HS into MPE mode in the settings I no longer get any signal, not sure if it's an Ableton thing or what. Your explanation of MPE at the beginning is slightly lacking I think... doesn't explain the 1984 Oberheim XK1 + Xpander (has voice stacking, so chords can hit different voices, same is true with a lot of workstations) or Polyphonic aftertouch which can control many aspects on a decent synth with in depth modulation.
"in general this is not something that every midi controller can do" Well that's the understatement of the frickin century. Totally! The keyboard version of the Hydrasynth is awesome too. I’ve been having fun using the X & Y position on the MPE controller to modulate stuff, but it’s surprising how much nuance you can get just from aftertouch alone
