The bit about everyone getting into position is absolutely true. I had a conductor once in a rehearsal who wrote his first piece. When he raised his hands and everyone raised their instruments and got ready, he stepped back and started apologizing because he started getting emotional. He said that he just realized he was about to hear his music performed for the first time.
Dude, that is so freaking cool. Was in band in school and love that first breath moment. Could only imagine how your conductor felt
No jokes. Seeing Troy tear up like that for Nascence was touching. Such a beautiful, moving piece of music and this was a wonderful conversation between the two of you. Thank you for sharing it and happy birthday Troy.

Never played Journey, never really listened to the music, but man that first cello phrase is so freaking powerful and moving... I have no words
Highly recommend. Both the game and the soundtrack. It is an Experience. 12 out of 10, would recommend.
I forced myself to not listen to Journey’s soundtrack, period, unless I was going to play the game. I’d not touched it since it released due to the fact that I just didn’t have a console that could play it at the time, and nobody I knew owned a PS3. Well, fast forward to this week and I played it for the first time. I cried at the end. It was a watershed moment in gaming and scoring for a reason, and I can finally understand that intimately, but moreover it’s been a watershed moment for me.
I’ve flirted with the idea of wanting to get into composition for years, because even though I’m a death metal guitarist, I got into music because of scores in film and games. This journey (hah) was catalyzed by Uematsu, and now finally after years it’s been reinforced by Austin and the LOVELY experience I just had.
I immediately opened up Austin’s Bandcamp and pledged for the vinyl because the music impacted me so thoroughly, and if you can, I recommend doing the same!
Gotta love Troy's face when he just lets himself feel the music. Lotta love there.
As a lamen listener, I really felt the primary emphasis between the two versions of the score is character vs world. It feels like the original is the player's journey, whereas the orchestration expresses the beauty of the world of Journey, who I tend to think of as a character, only more vast in scale (like the orchestra itself).
Definitely didn't know vinyls existed for this and I'm absolutely getting it, and I've never bought anything other than digital music in my life.
Also, I hope Journey gets remastered forever. One of the best experiences ever. Every time. The sand splashing color and sound, a journey with hardships and friendship. No words. Just chirps. Alone, or together, just moving forward. The perfect allegory of life.
Hearing you two recap "I Was Born For This" and hearing you explain the differences between the two versions, and then actually listening to it... fucking tears man. Right there wiping my eyes with Troy. That peak during the lyrics "je suis née" is the pinnacle of the song and the album itself. I still get goosebumps virtually every time I relisten to the track.
25:20 Austin's swallowing asmr adds such amazing ~texture~ to the piece 🤣 Witnessing true iteration in its purest.

I haven't played Journey in years, but as soon as I heard the first notes from the main theme, it brought me back. Thank you for this piece of art, and thank you for treating it with respect and grace after all these years.
I gushed to a friend about finding Journey on steam, coincidentally around the time of the rerecording. it just amazes me to no end how even now I still hold this so close to my heart and I couldn't stop telling him about how integral the music is. I have pledged for a signed copy and I pray someday I am able to watch you perform live. Thank you for creating this and continuing to contribute to the music world.

Dude, I could listen to you (Austin) talk about this soundtrack for hours upon hours. I never don’t get chills when I listen to this album, both versions. The beginning of Nascence makes me misty every freakin time.
The final track on Journey is still one of my favourite songs I’ve heard to date.

Wholeheartedly agree with Troy, Nascence never ceases to make me feel a certain way. Having heard it as a kid I don't remember a whole lot about what I was going through at the time, but sure do remember having the same awe and wonder as I do for the piece now. Beautiful artistry Austin!

This was so entertaining to see the changes made. I played Abzu and Journey a few years ago, and the music always blends into the environment and then a while later after I've finished playing them I go back to the music and experience it
Man I was getting chocked up watching this. It must have been such a special thing to be there.
This game's soundtrack was a large part of what set me on my path of wanting to be a composer in media. It's just such a landmark work in scoring and deserves all of its accolades and then some. This revamped project is just so amazing and to hear you really talk about it and your experiences is just so insightful, so thank you for that. What a way to pay homage to this game's soundtrack and your work on it. I hope you do this every 10 years! You can tell your style and experience has changed in that amount of time. It's amazing to watch and chronicle that compositional journey (no pun intended!)
Austin, the way that you allowed the French horns to rip out in the second phrase of “I was born for this” brings TEARS TO MY EYES and a chill every. Single. Time. I think that’s only accomplished because of the incredible restraint you showed in the composition. My hat is off to you sir! Thank you so much for this incredible remaster.
On first listen through of the album, because of this podcast, the Road to Trials really evoked Goldsmith in Masada. It was wonderful because it made this feel like a celebration of not only Journey but of some of the great icons in composing for the last hundred years, not through explicit imitation but of ghostly fingerprints on the page.
Honestly, that's my favourite of this series so far. I had never heard anything from Journey aside from little bits from trailers. Now I want to play the game. It's so cool to see a creator discuss something that is so raw for them. Thank you for sharing this with the rest of us.
Watching this again, that stretch from 26:50 to 30:00 just wrecks me. I see one friend deeply appreciating the talent of the other, and the other being forced to acknowledge that talent. Not to mention the pure beauty of the piece! Can’t thank Austin and Troy enough for letting us in ‘the room’.

Journey is by far my favorite game, I believe it's the best video game made, it's a work of art in motion.

I love your music Austin! I think you are an amazing composer, all your music combined with different instruments makes such a good sense and I love orchestral music, its my favorite.
Your original Journey soundtrack inspired me to pick up an instrument for the first time in my life, and to start taking cello lessons as an adult learner. I imagine it must be strange whenever you hear anecdotal evidence of how profoundly you've touched the lives of people you've never met - I hope you continue to hear it as often as you deserve.

This one I kept in my "watch later" list waiting for the right moment thinking that it would be the narration of the experience of a personal moment I need to pay some respect to with full attention. What an incredible interview, seeing the retrospective, the process and toughs of you Austin it was just so straight to the point, easy to follow to understand it. It really gains just way more appreciation to the music score and work done on it.
is there a musical analysis series/video done by this channel or anywhere else that breaks down exactly what notes/chords in that signature motif bring on the waterworks for so many? If it exists, I gotta see it.

Your delicate orchestrations and rich harmonies in this symphony really reminded me of Thomas Newman more than any other composer, though I know I'm not supposed to compare, please take it as a compliment. I think you really are the Thomas Newman of videogame scoring, sure I hear Jerry Goldsmith in your work and influences from various other composers too, but when it comes down to creating soundscapes, I think only Jeremy Soule and Thomas Newman are comparable at least in my opinion. I think John Barry was great at that too.

I have never and probably will never have a gaming experience quite like my first couple playthroughs of journey. This game touched me on a level I never thought I would have playing a game. I actually thought about religion and what the metaphor of the journey meant. Alone it's arduous, but with a companion it might make it a little easier. The themes of the exploitation of the land which lead to the downfall of the civilization, to how perseverance triumphs overall. This game hit. And without the score it just wouldn't be what it is. Period.
