- 45-year-old Hardeep Singh Nijjar left India for Canada in 1997 and became a prominent Sikh leader in the province of British Columbia
He publicly campaigned for Khalistan, the creation of an independent Sikh homeland in the Punjab region of India.
Just this year, Nijjar was working on an un-official worldwide vote by Sikhs on whether they support separating from India.
Canadian media reported he had received threats in the past because of his activism.

Well here is a bit of history
1) Sikhs living in India don't want a seperate state
2) Their land Punjab was divided by the British during the partition of India, with 60% going to Pakistan. Even Lahore their erstwhile capital is in present day Pakistan.
3) Though 60% of Punjab is with Pakistan only a few thousand Sikhs are left there due to Islamization.
4) On the other hand Sikhs in India are a part of Indian Army, we have a Sikh regiment. We had a Sikh Prime minister for 10 yrs! They are a highly respected community in India.
5) Some miscreants fled India seeking political asylum and now want to create Khalistan with only the Indian side of Punjab.
6) How is this logical? If they want their Punjab they must take it from both India and Pakistan ( they even have some of their Holy shrines in Pakistan)
7) It's only logical that if they are only targeting India, they must be sponsored by one of Indias neighbors.
8) And once again, it's the decision of Sikhs, living in India who have Indian citizenship, to decide on this issue.
Foreign citizens cannot decide on this. ( India doesn't give dual citizenship)
