I love owls. They are stealthy and mysterious. Getting a picture of one you must consider yourself lucky. Great horned owls are a beautiful bird. (my favorite) Seen a few, but never had my camera with me. Last year a Northern Saw Whet Owl was in a tree in my yard. I tried to duplicate his call. Next thing I knew, it flew down and landed next to me on my porch. I sat there for 30 seconds getting a close up of an owl one foot away from me before he flew off. Sometimes, the best things in life are events like this.
Wow what an experience!! When i heard and watched video that great horned are aggressive among owls i said think i got my fav one!! Coz aggression reveals the true ability, personality, nature of the particular!! You an owl knowledgeier??? Just wanna ask is great horned can be as a pet and live among other pets ?? Affectionate towards its owner humans??
The reason why I love owls it’s because they are mysteriously and serious like ik that it looks like it’s wearing glasses but there beautiful and having a good ability knowing what to grab their rodents or prey
I love Great Horned Owls. There was a pair near my parents home in California and I loved to listen to them talking to each other. They are so big and majestic looking and have an amazing wing span.
He is gorgeous thank you very much for saving him i wish there was more people in this world like you again thank you for all you have done god bless and y'all are in my daily prayers
We have Great Horned Owls living in our neighborhood and calling every evening. I've seen a female taking wing on various occasions from pine trees around our houses - she's magnificent! Our backyard is also a certified wildlife habitat, and the Owls stay fairly close because of the rabbit, rat and squirrel population, as well as because of all of the other birds who feed at our house. We are SO lucky. Great Horned Owls are indeed beautiful and magical.....silent and deadly! I enjoy AmericanP's post - when I tried to sing back to our female, she left. I'll keep trying!
So cool. Eastern shore Maryland here and just heard an owl outside letting my little lab pup out naturally a bit worried and looked up his sound and ended up here. Cool info and a awesome to listen to.
Back in 2019 me and my sister found and saved a great horned owlet that fell out of its nest. It was a pretty cool experience. We called our local raptor center, they came and got it, gave it a checkup, and put it back the next day. They called us and told us that the mother was still taking care of it.
Walking the back part of my parents property, I saw a large cat or dog in the tall grass. As I approached a great horned owl whipped its head around and with yellow eyes stared me down. It must have been 3 times the size of this owl. It was incredible.
Exciting to see, Casey! Thrilling. Nothing like the experience of locking eyes with a wild animal. I see you and YOU see me. WOW! I hope you have many more connections with the wild world in the future:-)
Very beautiful creatures, I was lucky enough for one to come visit me sitting on a rock during the winter day in my backyard. So sad when it left, it was a very majestic moment
Beautiful Bird thanks for sharing and taking care of these Great Birds of Prey! We have 2 Great Horned Owls on Our Property and planning to build Boxes very soon
I once saw a giant owl and what I think was an equally large raven in a stare off on my neighbors lawn. I couldn't believe how big they were. It was the only time I saw an owl.
Love ,Love it being a night owl myself , a few years back on a early spring Nebraska morning along side the Mighty Mo River I walked up on a huge Great Horned Owl (probably female due to large size) eating a bird she never missed a mouthful , speaking softly I just eased back & away snapping photos, few days later I went back gathered up the remains taking them to a Conservationists ( Game Warden) finding out that her breakfast was a Red Tailed Hawk NOTE to left of this comment is one the photos of her as my thumbnail
What a handsome creature. Sad that he cannot fly. I hope he is still alive. Such fascinating knowledge about them! And to think people think that such amazing abilities/features happened by undirected forces & a lot of time. This bird was clearly designed by his Creator. I mean, look at how beautiful he is!
@@Cliff00936 hey i appreciate the way you came up with this !why dont you google it ,"oskar" instead of "oscar" and let Google teach you..there are famous oskars that u've never heard of! Have a prosperous day
Bald eagles have been seen attacking and expiring great-horned owls with relative ease. Eagles are more than a match for horned owls. Chicks can and do fall prey to great-horned owls but once the chicks reach a size near to their parents they are relatively safe from attack by horned owls. Also the greatest weight ever verified to be carried by any living bird of prey was a Bald eagle. It had carried off a 15 lb mule deer fawn that it eventually dropped and landed on a power line which caused a power outage in East Missoula.
@Darkasknightfall - quite true. Also, seasoned adult Red tailed Hawks, Ferruginous and Goshawks, especially females are on record killing adult great horned owls - especially in the daytime. Ghos are tough customers but so are many of the species of creatures they attack & often the owl doesn't always come out on top. Also, while they are strong, they cannot lift and carry off really heavy prey like an eagle. Ghos don't usually carry off 10 plus pound food items. Several pound like an adult rabbit or skunk are more common prey items and rats, mice & squirrels are even more common. Cats? Smaller feral cats or kittens yes but for the most part, a solid healthy 14- 15 pound plus adult cat a gho won't really mess with as a cat that size, especially a feral male could take the owl to the woodshed, if you get my drift. She embellished just a bit about these owls because they don't take just anything and everything- and even some of the prey items they do catch are on record turning the tide on the owl, killing it, such as another large eagle, hawk, snake that can constrict, porcupine, large cat etc etc. They don't have it that easy.
Thank you for your very informative video im in Indiana and have been hearing one almost every night and finally decided to find out what kind I'm hearing his sound matches most and even if its wrong I'm pretty happy to learn so much about them
There’s a few of these that hang out by my house. They keep mice numbers down, and hang out on my roof, and on two poles I have for a clothesline just outside my windows. They talk a lot too sometimes, the baby sounded like a baby human trying to hoo sorta. The two adults were talking one night for about 15-20 minutes. Nonstop back and forth. So then I joined in too. They both left without a sound. 😕
Great Horned Owls are great hunters but they can't handle a Bald Eagle usually. Eagles have been known to kill owls that steal their nests. They even have been killed by Red Tail Hawks, but they usually can handle most hawks especially under the cover of darkness.
I live in so Calif and we get GH's in Jan and Feb. Years ago while exercising my 20 lb Jack Russell hitting tennis balls to him at night in a school field. I could hear a GHO hooting in some tall trees nearby but thought nothing of it. Suddenly when my Jack was running for a ball the owl swooped in an hovered about 15ft above my dog for a few seconds I think sizing up whether my dog was small enough to go ahead and attack him for prey. My JRT was all muscle with huge canine's for a small dog and was a tough lil dog so I wasnt worried. I love these birds.
@@CTWhiteMemorial Even in So Cal at the the lowest temps of the winter we will get small groups of GHO's...Check my Channel to see Great Coopers Hawks photo.s
I think that because Oscar is working a regular gig as a program ambassador bird that it would be very unlikely that this could occur. One always needs to be alert to the animal's presence/mood , reading its body language (stress, fear, etc) and any other display or sound that informs one of its emotional and physical states.
My favorite bird of prey is the owl with the Great Horned Owl as my favorite of them. They are awesome birds because they have binocular vision like humans. Since their eyes are like this they can turn their heads completely around. GWO's not only have a massive wingspan but like all owls they have feathers in their wings that muffle the sound of their flaps so prey can't hear them at night. They're just cool all around.
I live in Belleville, IL about 20 minutes from St. Louis, Missouri and I hear these guys from time to time but about 2 months ago in town one of these guys snatched a tiny white Maltese pup from the yard of some people and the dogs owners were merely feet away! Scares me so bad because I have 2 chihuahuas and I see big Red Tail Hawks constantly too!
It is so important to be aware of the diversity of wildlife living nearby, Amy. This knowledge will help us avoid such tragedys-hopefully! It is a smart thing to always be with small dogs when they have outdoor time. So sorry for your neighbors' loss:-(
Where do different owl species shelter in winter? After an owl had its chicks in the damaged eve of my house last winter, it got me to thinking about what we could do as landowners to increase natural shelter locations for these magnificent creatures. Since there aren't nearly as many barns around as there used to be, we rarely see any barn owls anymore. What is their natural shelter, and is that important for increasing their presence on our property? Leaving dead standing trees came to mind as one possible remedy.

@@ckryses3962 I think owls can be pets in the sense that falcons can; more like a working relationship than a pet.
