I grew up in Nebraska, and want to clarify a few things about the Keystone XL pipeline. In the beginning, farmers and ranchers in Nebraska were all for the pipeline. Like having a cellular tower on their property, it would be a steady income stream that generally would not impact their operations. Except that right before the XL was announced, the original Keystone pipeline suffered a series of leaks (LINK AT END). When investigating the leaks, it was found that the steel quality and welds were deficient. In other words, to save money, Keystone cut corners that resulted in leaks. Plus, to avoid lawsuits, small sections of the pipeline were put under different front companies, so Keystone could declare bankruptcy with the small company, sell the pipeline to another front company, and avoid legal damages.
Nebraska sits on the Ogallala Aquifer, and for an agricultural state with no natural resources, that underground water is critically important. Dumping thousands of gallons of oil into it can basically destroy a farm. But even that wasn't the deal breaker.
To start the XL pipeline lease process, Keystone sent big-city attorneys out to knock on property owners' doors. They introduced themselves by saying: "sign this goddamn lease agreement right now, without having an attorney review it, or we will sue your ass into the stone age." Thousands of Nebraskans got their land from the Homestead Act. Just on my dad's side of the family, there are three plots of land that were obtained that way. No one else has ever owned that land, since it was divided up from open prairie. There are six generations of my family buried in a little country cemetery there. In Nebraska NO ONE walks onto your land and threatens to take it away from you. So in a politically conservative state, suddenly there was overwhelming opposition to Keystone and their tactics. In what might have been a historic first, environmentalists and farmers stood shoulder-to-shoulder protesting the project. Only those being well compensated by the oil companies are for the project.
Plus, you know, it doesn't even benefit Americans. It was to sell dirty Canadian tar sands oil to the Chinese. It was built with Chinese steel, would have provided a few jobs during construction, and then almost no jobs after completion. Except for maybe jobs cleaning up oil spills.

I have been studying and teaching about Climate Change for 28 years. I wish I had these videos for my classes back then. I am retired and have worked for years with CCL, Citizens Climate Lobby. I still feel, as difficult as it may be politically, that passing a National Carbon Fee and Dividend program which CCL has pushed for years, is the single fairest and best way to accelerate clean energy. It will also have FF companies pay for their pollution without just passing it off to their customers. It will also put pressure on onther countries to do likewise or pay a border adjustment tax. It is working well in Canada and several other countries. It will work in the US and support so many other carbon saving actions which will get them working sooner. Keep up the great work. The links are awesome.

"And we didn't even talk about climate change!"
Honestly, I think that's important. Climate change is bad, and should probably be the priority... but the thing is, when we emphasize it so much, we create a sort of illusion that it's the *only* reason why we should change the way the world works. As it turns out, dependence on fossil fuels isn't just bad for the environment, it's a bad way to help Ukraine, it's bad for economic stability, and it's even bad for your wallet! The only thing it's good for is oil executives' profit margins. And because of that, they are incentivized to feed us any story that keeps them on top.

    • @quilynn

Yup, sometimes focusing on it as the only reason, as if it can act as a singular trump card, helps solidify the idea that it's climate versus everything else and everyone else. In reality, climate change and the impending disasters are only the peak of the multitude of reasons why we need to invest in renewable energy, livable and walkable cities, reductions in consumption and manufacturing, etc.

      Society 😔. .
In all seriousness you have a good point. However, it should also be noted that a capitalist society follows what is profitable, meaning that it will invest more in renewables as they become cheaper and more advanced. We’re already seeing evidence of this as renewable energy is now starting to make massive returns for investment, even without government subsidies. Furthermore, the huge spike in gas and oil prices is going to create a huge demand for cheaper energy, which is definitely going to improve the market value of renewable energy since its independent of the war. A lot of work still needs to be done of course in order to fully or at least mostly replace the current energy industry with renewables, but it is looking ever more likely that we will accomplish it under capitalism (although it still needs some ironing out in many areas).

Interesting video; you are making excellent points! What I’m missing in many videos about this topic is the many advantages of changing to renewable energy. I live in the Netherlands. Gas costs about $10/gallon at the moment. I recently moved to a four bedroom house and when my car lease was up I opted for an electric car. I had solar panels installed on my roof. My first year energy bill worked out to about $20/month but this year I’ll pay around $10/month. That includes heating, cooling, cooking, hot water AND around 8,000 miles in my electric car. If I would have stayed with a gas guzzler and natural gas for heating and cooking I would have paid around $250/month instead of $10. So not only am I saving literal tons of CO2 emissions but I am also saving tons of money. The switch to renewables does not cost money or jobs; instead it saves money and creates jobs. It’s time to change the narrative and explain that we are being lied to on an unprecedented scale.
Meanwhile I’ll keep enjoying my warm comfortable house and my electric car - which outperforms pretty much any gas guzzler to boot!

Demand was low due to the pandemic so they lowered production last year in order to stop oil prices from dropping too much. By 'too much' I mean they wanted to maintain profits so yeah they purposefully decreased supply. Now that demand is rising combined with the Russian invasion they're faffling about avoiding the production increase because getting more money for less oil is g$$d for bu$ine$$.

    • @JacobIvice
      @JacobIvice 2 роки тому +8

@@Sylvarile it wasn't just to "stop oil prices from dropping too much", it was try to maintain profitability when they were hemorrhaging money in many places. Also keep in mind that many smaller country's economies are built on oil, and US oil companies don't ramp up production to meet that demand if it doesn't make financial sense for them. That should be a good thing to environmentalists: less oil being drilled and burned at any given time.
To understand oil and the environmental impacts and solutions, you also have to understand the basic business and market dynamics.
Side note, many countries can't just ramp production up or down to instantly meet demand. There's a certain amount of response time, and often by the time it takes to respond, demand numbers have already shifted.
The real solution to oil/natural gas is nuclear imo. It is clean and fulfills fossil fuels current role: baseline power load with renewables supporting fluctuating amounts and storing excess when available.

We're still using it and developing green tech required a thriving economy. If oil prices skyrocket, nobody has as much money, investments aren't happening, and new tech comes to a halt. It's a catch 22. Nobody is going to be going out and buying a Tesla if they're worried about paying rent/mortgages. Much less are investors going to sink money into companies like that if nobody is buying their product.
Putting a deadline on something was complete insanity. Because apparently, a crazy guy can invade a country and set us back years.

    - Germany builds two LNG terminals that will be repurposed for H2 in the future
    - There will be 200 billion euro invested by the government in renewables in the next 4 years, there's also a great emphasis on private investments
    - The 80% and 100% include the projected increased electricity demand (electric cars and heating with electricity)
Personally I'm quite optimistic. Our newish government did a good job so far. Renewable energy was one of their main topics from the start, but now with the current crisis it got turned up a notch. It is now called "freedom energy"! :D

I'm not saying they need to start building new nuclear power plants, just recommission as much as can realistically be done to reduce gas and coal burning. Then they could decommission whatever coal plants they still use occasionally, and use gas almost exclusively to plug the gaps when renewables are down. And then, as you add energy storage capacity, you can switch off gas power plants, and as you build more renewable power, you can decommission nuclear plants for good. This would be a much less CO2-intensive energy transition with the added strategic benefit of requiring much less Russian gas.

Loved the video all the way till the end, simple to understand, approachable, and yet insightful!
As I a German citizen thought I have to push back hard against the way this country is used as a positive example.
The big one is that Germany just more than trippeld its defense budget for this year and after that wants to
That war and militarization is bad in general should not be up to debate but also war is not only killing people, destroying their infrastructure, makes people involved mentally sick and is an overall crime against humanity, it also on top of that is hurting the climate like nothing else does.
The german center left government has not really done anything that would meaningfully combat climate change. Instead, they tow the neoliberal line of fiscal responsibility when it comes to social issues and climate justice and now just saying that we suddenly don't need Russia oil and gas - which we do need since there is no infrastructure to abandon 1/2 of our oil and 1/3 of our gas requirements - is just ceasing the moment to look like you want to do well (gathering international praise in the process).
What the government actually does is warmonger with a extra 100 billion Euros for an industry that definitely won't safe us from climate change to say the least.
I wish governments across the globe would be able to just spend that kind of money on issues that would actually improve their citizens socioeconomic conditions but no:
    WAR IT IS!

Nationalizing the oil industry would be disastrous. In fact its already far too nationalized - we should be removing the subsidies we give them and try to come up with regulations to limit the amount of influence oil and gas lobbyists have over policymakers (ideally written in such a way to limit the amount of influence _all_ lobbyists. The government should enact the will of the people, not the will of whatever corporation writes the fattest check).
And yes, that would make gas really really expensive. That's kind of the point. Increased gas prices drives concepts like adopting mass transportation, adopting EVs or at least cars with better fuel efficiency, promotes the construction of walkable neighborhoods over sprawling suburbs, etc.
Kowtowing to the fossil fuel industry is limiting both our ability to respond to climate change and, as has become more and more obvious over the past few years, is also limiting our national security capabilities and limiting potential growth prospects - and those subsidies mean taxpayers are essentially paying to fuck the country over for the benefit of a handful of ultrawealthy oil barons.
And we let them get away with it because we're paralyzed by fear. Not entirely unjustified fear - there would be a fairly painful transition period thanks to so much of our cities already being built as car-dependent suburbs. They will take a long time to rebuild and replace (though not as long as you might expect - it would already be happening if cities would allow more mixed-use zoning. Mixed-use neighborhoods have been in _very_ high demand for at least a decade or so now, especially among the younger generation who don't yet have a family and the extra space provided by a suburban McMansion is more of an expensive hassle than a dream home, and after decades of wage stagnation that's an expense most don't want to take on until they absolutely have to).
Once the transition gets rolling though, people will quickly realize that their fear, though often justified, has been greatly exaggerated by those who profit from the world not being allowed to improve. Sure, there are always those for whom an extra $5/mo in fuel costs is right at the make-or-break level, but for the vast majority of Americans - and particularly the vast majority of Americans who have the free time to spend writing rants about how horrible the gas prices are - the effect of gas going up by even 10-20% is near-meaningless. They can drink one or two less beers a month or plan their dinners an extra day in advance to avoid an extra trip to the grocery store each week. Annoying perhaps, but hardly the country-destroying calamity that Shell and Exxon want you to believe.

The stigma from past accidents is effectively unfounded with current tech. We can even re-use coal power plant infrastructure by building the reactor and containment and running the pipes to the turbine and generator that already exists. Modern nuclear reactors can actually cool themselves down to safe shutdown via convection in the case of a complete power loss, as what happened in Fukushima to the first generation reactors designed in the 1950s and were constructed in a region prone to earthquakes along a shoreline prone to tsunamis....

I literally saw an ad today that had all the things we “wouldn’t have without oil and natural gas” and it was slowing getting rid of almost everything the family in the video had. I’ve never seen a pro oil and gas ad before lmao

    • @SaveMoneySavethePlanet
      @SaveMoneySavethePlanet 2 роки тому +1

Those ads are so silly too cause they’re trying to be “all or nothing.” When in reality we could get rid of 25-50% of that stuff immediately without ruining our lives and it would buy us a whole lot of time to work on figuring out how to replace the rest of the stuff.
Oil companies act like humans didn’t live before plastic was made.

I agree. The whole “climate change” movement typically pushes legislation that will see are carbon and methane footprints lower over a period of 10-20 years. It’s hilarious how disingenuous company’s like them are. Reminds me of the whole “gas stove nostalgia” marketing he talked about in a previous video.
I actually found the ad in question but I don’t think youtube allows links on UA-cam comment sections anymore. It’s called “life runs on energy” by energy transfer. It’s honestly a treat to watch.

The statement that a lot of things are made of oil isn't necessarily a pro-oil statement. I had a chemistry teacher who said that since that so many things are made out of oil, burning it (for energy) is the most stupid thing you can do with it. She was making a "use other sources of energy" statement with that.

Higher gas prices suck I guess, but honestly, we need that motivation to stop using petroleum fuels. How it's legal to buy a car with less than 20 mpg in 2022 is beyond me. All the pearl clutching and efforts to lower gas prices to me demonstrates that we are in no way shape or form going to stop climate change. It's not hopeless, we are.

    • @SaveMoneySavethePlanet

Unfortunately 60%+ of America is living paycheck to paycheck so that’s the only reason for their pearl clutching. If we can solve that then I bet stuff like reducing oil would suddenly have a lot more support.

We need people who have direct knowledge on these fields to tell people what really happens. So please do
Share any info you have. Politicians are bought and paid for by lobbyists of whatever company pays them. Same with most news media

I live in the Netherlands. We import roughly 20-25% of our oil and gas from Russia, which obviously is a concern right now. On this topic I recently read an article which detailed why we can't just switch to American oil. Russian oil is different from American oil and thus requires different oil refineries than Russian oil does. We simply do not have the infrastructure to just switch from one oil source to another. So yes, renewable energy is definitely one of the most discussed solutions here.

But then I see these videos about what the oil companies suggest we should do and it's absolutely incredible.

@@sampejke I'm not American, I'm Italian. Russia is not a non-existing economy, but all of its GDP comes from fossil fuels. It's clear that we cannot use fossil fuels anymore and if Russia doesn't switch to renewables and diversify its economy they will be non existing in the future. And that will happen to US too. What the US is not realising is that China is driving the renewable transition so if they don't catch up they will also become a way less powerful economy.
