It strikes me that with a rock on each corner for wind, this would be a very outdoor friendly game. There are so few quality games that are relatively windproof and compact enough to take camping, on a picnic, to the beach, or to an outdoor festival. It would be great if you ever decided to make a list of games that fit this niche.
One of the reasons I absolutely love Hive (especially the 'pocket' version). I've taken it on pretty much every outing I've had and see myself doing that for a long, long time. I'd surely watch a video, heck, even a series of videos, of outdoor-worthy games!
just been re listening to all the podcasts again, thanks so much for all the boardgames, boardgames and people who love boardgames and more boardgames still
@@TheEmmaHouliI've been waiting for this game to be out in the UK for a few months after spotting it on Tik Tok 😅 Now it's gunna be a fight to the death to get hold of a copy once it finally does come out
I have no idea what you are talking about. It is just pure coincidence that this game ended up in my Amazon cart within minutes of me finishing this video.
Skull was the same way and I played for a couple of years with random objects. But after dozens of fun nights bought the original for myself and two friends. I can see the same thing happening with Lacuna.
You guys are great. This looks very interesting. Thank you for the honesty on biases. It does look "chil", and the component quality looks high -- interested in the price point.
Have you tried Polarity? It has comparably simple rules, nice canvas cloth mat, interesting placement choices, and a delicate dexterity element with the magnetic pieces.
love to see a neat 2 player game. most of our collection is "2+" but we all know the two player experience falls far short. Since my table is usually just my brother and me, we really ought to invest in some 2 player games like that we can enjoy over and over :)
i have to say that this could have been a sack. The tube seems to be superfluous, though pretty. It is one reason why i love the game hive so much. i usually take it with me to family events and such to spend the time, either with my brother or or someone who is interested. And another game on my wish list. Thank you SUSD (no really, thank you. You have showed me fantastic games and enabled some real quality time with my family and friends)
I think the game would've been a lot less fun without the tube. It creates this tactile feeling to setting up the game that you wouldn't get with a sack.
I feel like the tube is crucially missing a semi-circle cut on the top so you can simply invert the tube on the mat, drag it around, and the pieces fall out into place.
Wonderful review Matt! One of your best in ages : ) Very comforting and chill just unloading on a simple board game for once. Definitely buying this one!
I own The Fuzzies, Hey! Thats My Fish, Hive..picking this up and going to check out Ice Team. I'll consider them wedding gifts to myself and my wedding mate.
You can't. That's the dirty secret of this game: there will ALWAYS be a piece that rolls onto the floor and under the couch where the cat with the extra sharp claws makes its nest. Always.
Skull is a game that unfolds then unfortunate collapses back into itself as soon as someone starts just saying a number between 1 and 3 immediately for their turn, which everyone then realises is optimal and the game loses all pupose
That's not optimal. If you're the lead, having 2 tiles down while everyone else has 1 gives you a big knowledge advantage. If people are getting away with cheap guesses, put a skull down first and bait them. It's a bluffing game, not a guessing game!
@atmhso yeah everyone starts putting skulls down with higher regularity so the 1st person just chooses a lower number. And so then someone decides I won't put skull ill raise 1 higher than the first person. And the game technically "works" but never goes past the first bet which is always a fairly low number unless they think everyone is trying to raise and so they bid like 4 or 5. All of the deeper interesting things stop existing and it becomes just who do you think put yes or no bet thay number. repeat
Thanks for a very well done review!! :D This kind of game is right up my alley with the type of friends I play with. Also, thank you for always bringing up your disclaimer. It's always reassuring to know that anything that SUSD has any affiliation with will be brought up honestly.
look at the yellow wooden piece at 2:30 that looks chopped off... are you the type of person who would write to the company and ask for a replacement, or would you keep that little malformed fellow?
So... it's good..but we played 4 games...and we're convinced whomever goes 2nd just wins. We even let first player take 2 pieces at start instead of 1... still not enough.
I'm surprised this got a recommendation. I'm not sure about this game. I bought it and have played it 10ish times. I enjoy the puzzle in the moment but for my group who are all fairly good (or at least evenly matched) at board games and puzzles, whoever goes second wins. It's easy to eek out the victory when you take the final turn if you were evenly matched throughout. Maybe it's different for other groups but the pattern was so apparent to my group that we've largely stopped playing. There was only one game where the person going second didn't win and it was because they were new to the game.
it really is a test to my capability of handling anxiety every time I see SU&SD go ham with the small pieces of a game during a review, such as letting they fall on the floor
@@Squatch_needs_no_heroes yeah it's like a slightly bigger, thicker shirt that fits over a standard shirt or a jumper. I've seen them in a few UK shops the past couple of months.

@@alxhague can‘t remember them all but I think the most raised question was „what happens if fuzzies fall of the tower? Do they get put back into the bottle or do you keep them for penalty scoring?“ something like that. I just remember reading the rules and handing them to everybode who wanted to have a go understanding some things but beeing unsatisfied at the end
I think my niece would like this game. Simple clear rules. I do think I have a rough strategy. That being try to put as many pieces at intersections of multiple colors and take the furthest pair. You are blocking your opponent while, hopefully, being closest to a pair of pieces.
I liked the idea, but I didn't like the $35 price tag. So I bought some (sets of) differently shaped buttons from a hobby shop to substitute the flowers. As for the Trophies, just use dimes; heads and tails. Same game for a fraction of the cost.
