If you’re been in the instructional design space for any amount of time, you’ve probably heard of LXD, but this job title, among others, can be confusing and sometimes misleading.
From using human-centered design principles to user research, learning experience design not only sounds different from instructional design but may also be more focused on the people it’s serving.

I have the exact same thoughts about the similarities of the two. It would be interesting to do a salary comparison between the titles.

This is only anecdotal, but at my previous company Instructional Designers would do the analysis and design/scripting/storyboarding for a course, then pass it on to a dedicated eLearning Developer for creation and implementation. At my current company LXDs do the entire ADDIE process ourselves.
Good observation, Ryan! Yes, I think in traditional settings where different roles handle different tasks, it's more likely that the IDs will do the design and devs will do the development. I imagine it would be rare to call the IDs "LXDs" in that case.
Now that you mention it, I remember that's why I initially positioned myself as an LXD. It wasn't because I was doing a ton of user research, but it's because I wanted people to know that I could do the ID and the development.

Hello. I am into ID for last 15 years, could you please put some light on Learning Architect - role, description. Thanks.
I still don't quite have a handle on all the different job titles on my team. I'm listed as an Instructional Designer but we also have a Multimedia Creator, a Learning Engineer, a Learning Architect - I'm probably forgetting some. And even at my institution the role of the ID is different depending on department. Still fascinating. I'd rather be a Learning Experience Designer although people barely understand what an Instructional Designer is :)
Very true! Titles and responsibilities can vary a lot even within a team / department, let alone for the industry as a whole :D
Thanks Devlin. Had a query - when is a drag and drop a better engaging experience, compared to giving multiple options - in scenario based learning.
Hi Kumar! I think that staying away from drag and drop is generally a good idea because it's not accessible, but if you were to use it, then using it to simulate how you'd have to move things in the real world could be a good way to go (for example, "dragging" certain chemicals ot the appropriate chemical cabinet)
@@DevlinPeckYT, oh, interesting. Didn't know about the accessibility issues with drag and drop. I had a microinteraction project in mind for my portfolio that would rely on a drag and drop interaction. But I'll rethink it.
When I first started, I worked as a multimedia designer making storyline courses, but as the role progressed, I was dealing with more and more customers and heads of departments, assessing their needs and recommending different training solutions; this would work as a job aid; this should be a training video etc etc. I came across the title of LXD and felt it was more in tune with what I was doing. At that time, IDs seemed at a higher level as the only IDs I knew came from corporate training and had a lot of experience conducting live seminars, which I still have no interest in :) But now I see ID & LX in the same circle, and the live training is a subset or a skill set within a training department or ID/LX team.

Is a lde similar to a learning Design strategist?
Hey Devlin, can you teach us how to make a training course using ID from scratch using the basic ADDIE model. I have been trying to crack this but have been struggling lately. My college professor doesn't help much. Please make a dedicated video for the same.

@@DevlinPeckYT Let me give you a background of what exactly happened and then as per your expertise you can decide what will suit my learning need.
So during first year of my college my ID professor was not very good at what he was teaching us. Such is the case that till date I don't understand what is the application of ID in real life. After watching your videos I have got somewhat idea but I would like to understand the process in-depth right from the scratch i.e from The very basic step to the final step so that In this project I understand the essence of ID or LXD.
And I am sure not just me but there are thousands out there in search of such content. Your channel has been a blessing because I was struggling to understand ID and your content is sincerely gold.
In short I wouldn't mind if the video goes beyond 30 minutes and explains all the nitty gritties of how to design a training program in ID. You can also help us with study materials, resources and real life case studies for in depth understanding given many of us here are completely beginners.

I'm not even sure if you still check messages from here. Out of curiosity, does it matter the degree title? My school is in transition and I have the option of keeping it as MS LxDEdTech or switching it to MEd Ed Tech and Instructional Design. I am torn between the two and trying to figure out which is best. Any advice or opinion?
No, I'd say it doesn't really matter! The degrees are called all different things in this field. Maybe you could use whichever title makes more sense for the role you're applying to: if Corporate ID...go with MS in Learning Expereince Design, or if in Ed Tech, go with the Ed Tech title. I don't think you can go wrong either way :)

If I pursue a masters degree in learning experience design would that help me get jobs as a Instructional Designer?
Hi Natalie...it may, but a strong portfolio that shows off the in-demand skills will help you get much further :D
Thank you so much for explaining that LXDs and I.D.s have similar roles and responsibilities, Devlin. Could this be a generational thing, then? Younger I.D.s branding themselves LXDs and trying to highlight that they are more familiar with their audience’s learning needs and expectations because they are the same age? In your experience, is there any truth to that? I’m currently transitioning into this field having taught since 1991 and now as owner of an Ed Tech company. Will calling myself an ID instead of an LXD prevent me from competing with younger “LXDs” for freelance projects? I certainly see this as a trend in Ed Tech start-ups who are mainly seeking very young employees who they can hire for less money.
Hi Andrea...possibly? That being said, I see people who are in their 60s using the LXD title, but the newer people to the field and profession do seem to gravitate towards LXD more easily.
I don't think that calling yourself an ID will have any influence on the roles you land...unless the person hiring for that role is a huge LXD proponent and doesn't know that IDs do the same thing.
I'd say focus on your portfolio and the quality of your work and let that speak for itself...you won't need to worry so much about the title :D

That claim does NOT make any sense. I would NOT take it seriously.
It's funny how people interpret the job titles. I mentioned to a colleague recently that I was looking to move into Instructional Design.
She remarked how useful that sounds because she’s always struggled with instruction manuals and then went on to talk about assembling a bed from Ikea lol.
