- Here are a couple of pointers on spotting cleaned , and in this case “whizzed” coins. I’m using Morgan silver dollars to show the difference between cleaned coins and original coins. Here is a hint - color and luster are a big deal.

I wished I watched this video a week ago. I was at a small coin show and bought an 1881 Morgan. My radar wasn't really looking out for cleaned coins, so when I found it I thought it was great. But looking at it now it is clearly whizzed. It was also only 40$, so it's far from the end of the world. This was a good learning lesson for me, and I still like the coin regardless. Thank you for this video!

You should see the multi-thousand dollar coins that dealers hold in their hands with no gloves! I've seen a coin week video of a guy holding a coin worth $100,000! But I think ancient coin collectors especially hold their coins without gloves. I'm just scared to get a greasy fingerprint on an uncirculated coin. If a coin is graded below an AU50, I'll have no problem holding it. I just don't touch the face of the coin, only the edge.
@@evenruderanger7617 nothing wrong with holding the coin without gloves as long as you handle it on the edges with your fingers not palm it. I like to feel and touch the coin so gloves for me out of the question.

Thanks for the great video and time. As a newer collector I'm having trouble finding uncleaned Morgan's, eBay is so bad with phony sellers and coins that I won't buy there anymore. Even with your video and a side by side comparison I can't tell, it's also hard to tell looking at sellers pictures. I absolutely hate learning the hard way, I guess everyone may have this problem at first.

Yes I've avoided buying coins on eBay like radioactive death. Too many shysters scammers and bamboozlers. It's just become illicit playground for Crooks and chiselers.
@@lorenzomaximo1818 hi Lorenzo, I just found a what I think might be a good trustworthy site? Coin Book, the fees are low it's owned and operated by numismatists and so far so good. Ebay is terrible IMHO, and also used as a pricing standard which I think is absolutely wrong. If you eliminated the crooks you would have little to use as a price comparison, with that said your coins would be more valuable in my opinion than a overrated cleaned eBay coin. I keep on searching, good luck with yours.

It’s an art form to grade and know what a cleaning looks like exactly. I have a hard time with peace dollars. Thanks for the fine tuning.
Really good description that ive never seen anyone use before. If you have any other tips on this it would be awesome! I’ve always typically looked for micro hair lines going in the same direction. But the secondary luster pivotal points is really good. Would be interesting to see how it works with other coins like quarters and half’s. You have a new subscriber 👍🏼

Almost all Morgan dollars are cleaned today. Only exception are far dollars bought direct from the mint in the early 70s

Natural luster will give you a cartwheel effect that's just not right on a cleaned silver dollar.
Very good your explanation. symple and direct.
On the original coin, that luster is like a pearlesque luster whereas the cleaned is a flat luster. That's how I can tell.

What about dipped coins? Where no abrasive elements are used.
I believe dipping is actually market acceptable. Im most cases that is. Of course if done properly
@@gtrlover7 I use Goddards silver dip. I have a jewelry basket in a jar set the coin in the basket and swirl it around for about 15 seconds then rinse with warm water and pat dry works perfect. There’s no telltale sign whatsoever. I only do it on AU and uncirculated coins.
Assuming you dont make micro etchings by buffing, it seems like a matter of chemistry, right?

I have a Silver Dollar here. I turned to sideways and it turned bright light blue, the color of the wall in front of me. Then I turned it towards the window and it turned bright silver, then I turned it towards the coat rack and it went mirror black. Did you say purple LOL.
May I suggest you take a photo of the same coin before and after cleaning, as there are just too many variations of strike to compare...
what if you clean them with a non abrasive like flitz and just use a q tip? ive cleaned a couple and they still have that nice cartwheel affect and looks mint. i am def against the abrasive cleaning or acid dip.
The standard seems to be that if you can tell the coin has been cleaned then it is a negative thing. I'm not familiar with flitz.

NGC cleans coins for a fee...harsh cleaning that removes material is a no/no...but dipping them..like NGC does...is not harmful. and over 100 years 90 percent of coins have had some cleaning...especially during pandemics and such...the banks would clean them to kill any viruses. Cleaning in and of its self...is not wrong...harsh cleaning is

Actually I do my best to finish the job a whizzer started. You got to go all the way to Red Rouge, remove those brush marks and only leave the original bag marks. Worried about destroying the finish, easy just don't polish anything over AU 55 or so, the finish is about shot at that point anyways.
Note: I am not a dealer or collector, just a family stacker, none of my coins are for sale !
If you got a real problem coin I suggest Valve Grinding Compound from Autozone Follow it up with Red Rouge with a whizzer then a bare thumb ending it off with A Red Rouge T-Shirt Rub Down, for an hour or two, while you watch old cowboy movies. 😁
White brilliant coin graded for most top tierd grading companies has been cleaned! The think is that you need to cleaned prfessionaly! Or you think tha 150 yeras coin will not react with the environment?
I prefer AU ++ I can Identify a bit of grime on the outer and still see the luster patina on the flats and the first thing I look at are the Foot ware of the feet for clean lines the breast lines the feather lines and the curve of the R. I am getting better at Identify n Cleaned Walkers.
i bought a morgan today and it looks shiny, but not sure if it has been cleaned. Worse case scenario, if it has been cleaned, it does still have some value does it?

pcgs uses the term grossly over polished. They only say it, they don't actually define what draws the line between over and under. Fun Huh LOL

The cartwheel luster is gone on the left coin
Cleaned coins don't pinwheel like original surface coins.
