  • Learn how to prepare an indigo dye vat for Shibori dyeing projects. cr8.lv/introind...
    The process for making the indigo dye vat is simple, but specific. Be sure to follow Kaari’s steps exactly in order to create the crucial bloom and end up with a perfectly developed concoction:
    1. Add indigo, thiox, soda ash to bucket of warm water
    2. Stir in one direction so the elements dissolve evenly
    3. Reverse direction until bloom forms
    4. Allow to stand for one hour
    Watch Kaari demonstrate the complete process in the instructional video below and be sure to check out her inspiring classes on beginning and intermediate Shibori dyeing technique: cr8.lv/introind...

    Why do you consider lye toxic? It's caustic, not toxic. Or is there some chemical reaction with the other ingredients that make it toxic?

      Most people don’t understand the difference between toxic and caustic. Toxic they understand but often caustic is a new word for them.

    Hi I just took a class yesterday and she use the indigo and made it into a thick paste didn’t just poured into the boiling hot water then she also used a lie and she use fructose with the things that you use be in place of the law and the photos thank you so much

      Fructose is the reducing agent in this case I’m also noticing she is using oxygenated indigo if you get the green stuff straight from the leaves you have to oxygenate it yourself. Still doable but much easier if it is already oxygenated, I put the cat in

    Thank you for your video. Wouldn't you also wear a dust mask when working with powders?

    If I use regular Indigo powder, will it take longer than an hour for the vat to be ready?

    I have watched many videos on how to make an indigo vat and majority of them say to let the vat sit for an hour after mixing. I recently purchased some natural blend indigo from Japan, and the instructions say it is ready to use immediately after mixing. I'm left confused- do I follow their instructions or the instructions I keep finding on UA-cam and the internet? Is it because I have a different type of indigo dye?

    Can you use a plastic bucket? It does the vessel have to be metal?

    • @jason_g25
      @jason_g25 4 роки тому

      The vessel can be anything. 5 gallon buckets are usually the best with an air tight lid. I use a good grade screw on lid from Home Depot

    is it natural

    • @jason_g25
      @jason_g25 4 роки тому +1

      No. This is a debate that is not talked about much. But Jaquard pre-reduced indigo is a chemically constructed indigo substance. And the thiox ingredient is also very bad for the environments for should be handed with a mask and gloves. Being that this is NOT a natural indigo vat, this should not be poured into soil when finished because it will harm the plants.
