  • In this video tutorial I explain how to make realistic Local Adjustments using the tools in DxO PhotoLab 3.
    I’ve received quite a few emails asking me to explain how the Local Adjustment tools work in DxO PhotoLab 3. In this video I explain each of the local adjustment tools as well as explaining what purpose each is best suited to. I then demonstrate the tools and how you can use them to create realistic adjustments to a landscape photo.
    Whilst this video demonstrates DxO PhotoLab 3, you can also apply the tools and techniques to earlier versions of PhotoLab. You won’t have the new helpful Layers feature, but you can still achieve excellent results.
    You can learn more about DxO PhotoLab here: www.dxo.com/dxo-photolab/
    At the time of publishing DxO has a 50% Black Friday sale which is great value.

    This would have saved me a lot of time and experimentation. Getting clear explanations of DxO features has been a challenge. One quick comment: the local adjustments popup in the upper left corner can be turned off with the "i" key; this is not real obvious. Also, the local adjustments help menu is toggled with the "e" key.
    I'm finding I like DxO's local adjustments more and more as I understand them and gain proficiency. You suggestion on lowering flow and opacity with the eraser and brush is very helpful.

    great first glans on the new LA toolkit.(it's more usable now in PLv3) Imho the best way to "See" a mask selection of the brushes and also the other like gradient and upoint (this has also the mask B&W as shown in video) is by using saturation slider al the way to max desaturation. The "grey area" is your selection and by pressing ALT (windows) you can change brush in erasor and back for fine tuning erase and paint over. Same desaturation trick can be used in the HSL tool. less bright then exposure to the max. Can't wait to see you diving in DxOPLv3 deeper working with all available tools to create a image as wanted. (seen your NIKcollection one's)

    Great video, thank you. Are you planning any videos on the new version of the Nik collection? I’m not sure exactly what has changed in this version, and while I normally buy every Nik update, I’m not sure about this one. What do you think?

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley  4 роки тому +1

      It depends which version of the Nik Collection you mean when you say new and what you're comparing it against. If you mean the Nik COllection 2.3, I wrote this article which should clear things up lenscraft.co.uk/photography-blog/nik-collection-2-3/

  • @TheArcSet

    Thank you for the video. As it's half price right now (20% better than the adverts I've been flooded with since its released), I was wondering whether you think it's worth upgrading to photolab 3, from 2. I ask as, although I bought photolab because I wanted to support the company, their behaviour this year seems like it might have been less _generous_ to users than before the restructuring and this upgrade, which seems to only include two tools and UI upgrades, seems more like an update, than a full mainline upgrade.

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley  4 роки тому

      Don;t forget, upgrades aren't just about adding more new tools. IMprovements to make the software easier to work with also count for a lot. Additionally, most companies are now having interim releases rather than one big one. I think it's to counter the Adobe release machine. If you want to check out the new features in PhotoLab 3, here's a link to the review I did ua-cam.com/video/OKqTG7BmFJc/v-deo.html. And if you're wondering, yes I upgraded because I tried the software and thought there was value for what I do.

    Excellent video. Do you ever use the Nik Collection now that PhotoLab 3 has integrated many of it’s features. For a non-destructive workflow with a raw image, is it possible to go from PL3 to Nik without creating a tiff and use multiple files?

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley  4 роки тому

      Good question. It's not currently possible to bypass the TIFF stage when going from PhotoLab to Nik. Because of this and a couple of other things my workflow when using PhotoLab is to export to Photoshop. I then use the Nik Collection inside a Smart Object so that I can refine the adjustments and control points later if necessary.

  • @jeffboring103

    Thanks so much for this video. I’m very familiar with Nik plug-ins. I recently got DXO 2.3 and was thinking how I would’ve taken the original image into Nik and used Viveza to do get the same result. When should I use PhotoLab local adjustments instead of Viveza? Do you have a “rule of thumb “ that you follow? Thanks so much for any advice!

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley  4 роки тому

      Good question and no I don't have a rule of thumb other than I start with PhotoLab. When I hit the limit of what I can achieve easily in PhotoLab I would then switch to Nik. I know some will say you should do everything in PhotoLab to maximise quality before exporting a TIFF to Viveza. There is merit in this but I haven't seen any problems caused by not doing it either. In short, do what works best for you.

  • @ChrisEdgecombePhoto
    @ChrisEdgecombePhoto 4 роки тому

    Thanks for this video Robin. I'm not sure I like the behaviour when using the U-Points in that when you are editing them you lose a little definition in the actual image until you stop editing the u-point. I've noticed this when trialling PhotoLab 3 on my windows machine; it would be better I think if you could see the changes in real time.

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley  4 роки тому

      You should be able to see the changes in real-time by turning off the mask view. Am I misunderstanding? I often do.

    • @ChrisEdgecombePhoto
      @ChrisEdgecombePhoto 4 роки тому +1

      @@RobinWhalley I just find that when I start using the U points, the whole image loses a little definition, then when you complete your current adjustment on one of the sliders, the definition returns.

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley  4 роки тому +2

      @@ChrisEdgecombePhoto Ah, I understand what you're saying. I think it's down to the lens correction module. It looks like it does a cached rendering each time you make a change. The lack of definition is how the image would look without the module and its sharpening (in the Detail panel). If you look to the top right of the preview when this happens you will see a whirling icon in dark grey. This shows the preview is still processing to refresh and reflect the changes you made.

  • @cpuuk
    @cpuuk 4 роки тому

    If I have lens correction on within the camera, will Photolab use the already corrected RAW or will it remove the correction and apply its own?

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley  4 роки тому +1

      My understanding is that if you have the DxO Camera and Lens Modules installed to PhotoLab for the RAW file your editing, PhotoLab will use those rather than the camera corrections. I'm sure I have read that somewhere but I've just been looking round and I can't find it. I've certainly seen improved performance from the DxO modulesand the image in this video is just one example. The RAW file does have a correction profile embedded but the results in other RAW converters fall well short of the PhotoLab correction (before I make any adjustments). If I delete or turn off the lens module the performance is on a par with other converters. This is of course my view and I always recommend people to download the trial to test.

    I wasted many hours trying to discover how to turn on the reset, close, and mask options in the palette at the bottom of the image that appears when the local adjustments are activated, which you first mention at around 2:30 of this video. I finally discovered elsewhere that this palette is not available on a PC.

    I wonder why you are presenting the program based on such a miserable picture. How should you imagine what is possible. the photo is just as terrible at the end of the editing process as it was at the beginning. I would never get the idea to buy your software with this extraordinarily poor introduction.
