Oh snap! Dude I literally just finished watching your R8 origin story.
Thank You JayEmm. That feedback means a lot to us coming from you.
Awesome information! Will definitely use this when shopping around?
You should! If you have any questions feel free to leave another comment and we'll help you out.
Thanks mate. This is the most honest and detailed car review video I’ve ever watched.
Thanks a lot for this, man! I hope I will watch this again soon but for more than just curiosity!
Best of luck with getting your dream car Juan.
Veeeeery Goood!!! Fantastic Video!!! Thanks!!!!
Our pleasure Gustavo!
I’m currently looking at a 2012 Audi R8 Quattro v10 that has a rebuilt title and I’m not sure if I should buy it or not. This will be my first time owning an Audi so idk much about them but do you think it’s worth it?
Man only 2 percent of us can afford this beautiful car
What model year in the first gen would you recommend based on refinement or improvements throughout the years?
Hi David, the most substantial change early on was the revision to the chassis which as I mention in the video can split. This revision was at some point in 2010. If budget allows then a 2013 on car would be a good call because of the facelift that took place for that model year. You might want to check out this video which explains a bit more : ua-cam.com/video/pcGJYsc23Mk/v-deo.html
@@ScottishCarClan thanks for the info, very helpful. Great content! I’m a subscriber 👍
Finally a video where someone did their homework, well done! Have been reading up on R8Talk for about a year now and you are the first one that covers 90% of the known issues (Y)
Thanks very much! I try my best to focus on the less commonly known problems with these buyers guides. DIY R8 repair videos coming soon too.
what issues are the rest 10%?
My friend had one of these, the 3rd gear went, we stripped it down & rebuilt it.The gears where over £3000, with the other parts, gaskets a new clutch etc it cost well over 6/7k, what it would have cost to get done god only knows....
Man what a great video. Do you know if the magride shocks can be easily replaced with non-mag shocks?
Simple, knowledgeable, and to the point; great video man!
Thank you very much :-)
Brilliant video , Jamie from Australia, my r8 Purchased at 35k ,,km I've never used the air conditioner, my last serviced they told me my compresor is knackered and compresor switch both need replacing $17k to replace, I told audi I've never used it wtf, manager said well that's the problem it's seized because not been used ,itold them it doesn' tell me in My log or manual that I must use it. I hopping it might just be the pressure switch .anyway I'm spuing I might have a claim against sales company as I've only done 12k,, km since I bought the car ,, pure nightmare,, thanks for you videos ❤❤
When buying a r8, bring along ur mechanic friend 🙂
If your spending 40+ k then pay for a specialist to look it over. Bot a dealer but a local specialist for sports cars for German cars. Hour or so of of looking around and reporting will save you a fortune
R-tronic clutch and the ac compressor are problematic areas that are really difficult to do. The seats are identi6to the ones I have in my TT and they are susceptible to damage easily. Also, the paddle shifts are not too sturdy and can break
Great review, unfortunately it re-ennforces that the build quality on these other manufacturers for these and other premium cars is sadly lacking. I've had a ton of mainstream cars without the type of issues you've listed. Not highlighting Audi in particular. German build quality is a fantasy, bored of how many people say how good it is. I've driven run of the mill manufacturers hard for 100k and not needed anything you've listed to be fixed. Even the parts cost is a joke when they are used across the various groups, yet because of the badge you get charged a massive premium.
Either way great summary. Can you do a gen 2 review?
Thanks for the comment Brian. Yes it can sometimes be disappointing but on the whole R8's do tend to be pretty well made with most problems being pretty easy to rectify! With so much shared with the Lamborghini Gallardo you could view it as a bargain as it costs so much less! But I do appreciate your point.
What crap. Had VW. Audi. Mercedes. German build quality is phenomenal. If it’s made in Germany. Not Mexico
HMMM I dont recall all these being made in Mexico??
BMW v8/v10 Connecting Rods and Throttle Actuators , Porsche 996/997 IMS ,Audi R8 Oil pipe etc..none of these are cheap things to fix,
Good review, I’ve owned 2 R8s now and I can absolutely confirm everything you’ve said is spot on....good advice given 👍🏻👍🏻
Great to hear! and snap! I'm 2x R8's deep at this point... I just cant seem to stay away.
I'm looking to buy one, was going to go for the r35 but i've heard maintenance is ridiculous. How's the expenses of maintaing and repairing an r8?
Is there a market for upgraded/improved parts to fix or mitigate all of these problems?
Mag ride was seen as a must have. People had issues selling on a car without mag ride. Now people are converting them away to standard set ups
Nice video. Had a egear Lamborghini Gallardo for 3 years which was pretty awesome, although they can be rather troublesome and darn expensive when they go wrong - Egear specifically (automated manual). I found this vid while doing some research on reliability of transmissions in R8s before maybe buying one. I actually hadn't thought of buying a manual till I just seen this, might be the better car actually. Cheers.
Thanks for the tips! Subbed :) Hopefully looking to get an R8 soon!
The one used in this video is for sale! Let us know if you want any more details.
Wooow, this guy's patience and hard work, deserves heck of ton of subs and likes....bruv, keep up the good work! 🤝🏻🔥🤩
This is a fantastic video thank you so much! I recently became interested in getting one and this is exactly the video I was looking for!
Glad I could help Trey!
Good advice! Test drove a 2010 today and the clutch pedal came up quite far before biting and after that felt abrupt. Only has 22,000 miles, but not relevant. Great car if nothing expensive fails, which is wishful thinking.
Something isn't right there Jerry, one world I could never use on this R8 is abrupt - everything has a lovely germanic smoothness to it. My first R8's clutch failed at 18k miles. The slave cylinder leaked and contaminated the friction plate and the symptoms were similar to what you describe.
@@ScottishCarClan between the clutch and other potential issues I think I’ll look elsewhere. I’m already supporting a Lotus Evora 400, but I love it enough to be worthwhile. Greatly appreciate your detailed info on the R8’s problem areas!
Fantastic video and it helped me in my recent purchase of a R8. Thanks!
Very good video, thank you. I got my gated V8 last year and did my research back then but some of these issues were new to me, especially oil plug and coolant leaks. Going to check them at next service.
Make sure the garage doesn't overtighten the plugs too! They only go to 10nm.
Seems like you tried and tested the supercars of this range, basically the entry level ones. Can you suggest the most reliable one out of them all? By that I mean the one with the least amount of problems and probably/hopefully cheap fixes although I know it won't be the case but then again
Hi, would you know of any issues with the quattro system? Also would you say these v8 2007-8s have bottomed out price wise. I know its all mileage related with prices at the moment for the early ones with seeing stuff between £30-46k for low to 70k ish miles...but in your opinion have you seen them go below £30k or do you think they have reached the minimum depreciation values for the mk1? All opinion but I'd like to hear yours...looking to buy one and maintain myself so your vids are inspiring me to take the plunge.
They’re 15 years old, any depreciation would be absolute minimal compared to running costs, it’s the last of your concerns.
Question. I have an automated manual. At 55mph the Speedo and tachometer are in since which means in 6th gear at 70mph cruise I’m north of 3k rpms. Is this normal?
Interesting video! I will take your advice when I come to buy an Audi R8! Thank you
Thank you UCE!
I've also done a comprehensive review of this car which you can view here : ua-cam.com/video/jL-wUI0dyt8/v-deo.html Enjoy!
Can you send me information on rebuilding my magnetic shocks please
You just helicoil the sump plugs. Easy to do, and dirt cheap.
Well SCC, I missed your R8, however I did source a lovely V8 Manual (White / Silver Blade full service history and new rubber all round) and been running it for a year now. Really appreciate the advice and the videos. And definitely enjoying the car :)
Did you find a V10 btw?
What a beauty 😍😍😍
Why thank-you. The car is quite pretty too, isn't it?
Hello from New Hampshire, New England, USA - This is one of the BEST, easily understandable, and on point videos, I've ever seen explaining how NOT to be taken "for a ride" when trying to buy your dream car.
TY, My friend! - Here's to you! *salute*
Wanted to say thanks for this awesome video. I just picked up an r8 and it helped me identify the oil cooler issue before purchasing I otherwise would have missed.
Thanks for commenting Nick! Glad to hear it 😎 that’s what the channels all about.
I am considering purchasing one of these. This has been really helpful. How do resolve the carbon build up?
Robert, a walnut blast tends to be the most common. Keep away from the promises of chemical injections in this case as the carbon must be manually removed.
i love ur clutch explanation!! im sure this method works on an automatic also
You can use a mirror on a stick with a light to look for leaks if you don't want to use a jack.
Any thoughts or experience with shift-fork issues on 07/08 model? Currently looking at one 08 model and a bit worried about it. Cost seems to vary and Audi has been supporting within the first 10 years apparently but 08 is coming up to the 13 year mark and I doubt they would be inclined to still cover it even though the 08 model I am looking to test drive on Saturday only has 35k miles on it. Any experience, thoughts, price information would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the great video content. Thanks in advance - Marc
Hi Marc, sorry for the slow reply. The shift fork issue is specific to the R-Tronic gearbox, have you considered a manual transmission to avoid this issue? If an R-Tronic is still your preference check the service records or ask the seller if a calibration has been carried out under their ownership. The good news is if the shifter forks are worn (or any related components) it should be easy to spot on the test drive. Switch the car to 'Sport' mode for the gearbox and try a few 4,000 rpm + up and down shifts. This will really tax the forks / syncro's and you'll hear it crunch as it tries to select a gear if worn. I hope your test drive went well?
Probably never going to buy this car but the chaps presentation was quite entertaining and informative, made it hard to look away. Good job bud.
Glad you enjoyed it Brenden! I hope we earned your sub :-)
Awesome! But I’m biased :-)
Yes, yes you are :)
Common Airconditioning compressor means engine out also the magnaride suspension
Yes correct... 2 big common problems unfortunately.
Amazing vid can tell you really know your stuff
Thank you Harry!
Very good vid. It would be good if you had it up on a ramp, and if you could show us the location of some of the items to look for and what they look like. For example, the 3 sump plugs.
Great suggestion Dan, we'll try to implement this into some future videos.
I bought a 360 modena following your 360 modena video. Been thinking about buying an R8 since a lot....i know what to look for now :D
This car have still impresiv look and design without any doubt so is worth your money.
I think so!
@@ScottishCarClan can you write me sir how much this car consumes a fuel ?
great vid 👌 thanks
Great video, very concise and easy to understand, thank you.
Hi just wanted to say great insight. I recently purchased a 2015 Spyder, got a great deal on it, but need to get the bonnet realigned as it may have had a knock, any suggestions would be great.
Thank you Raj, I love an R8 Spyder too! First give the bonnet a firm push down at each side to make sure it is closed properly, just like I do in the video. If it does need adjusted then any reputable bodyshop local to you should be able to help you with that. My one tip would be when you collect the car listen carefully - if adjusted too far R8 bonnets can creak against the inner liners. Good luck!
@@ScottishCarClan thank you
which years is better
Do you have any experience with the v10?
Hi Aaron, yes both the gen 1 and gen 2. How can we help?
Really nice video, can I ask is finding these cars and selling on something you do? I'd sooner buy one from you knowing everything has been checked. Or if you were given a deposit would you find one for me? Don't ask don't get loool
Nice informative and well made video mate, new sub look forward new content
Thanks Alex, I really appreciate that!
Thanks for the video! P.S. is it a Scottish accent? I feel like it is not, but i am far from native, so thats why i am asking. Just curious :)
how is owning this compared to the nissan gtr?
Very different cars, the GTR out-performs it in every measurable way as you may expect. Although just about every aspect of the Audi feels better quality. Swings and Roundabouts!
Any thoughts of doing a buyers guide for Jag F type ??
It's in the pipeline Alex! Current Covid restrictions have slowed things up a little but its coming.
On many of the early models the clutch had to be replaced after only 80-90 000 km and the cost is/was as high as around £ 4000.
And the FSI system makes it VERY important to use the recommended engine oil and filter and VERY important to change the engine oil and filter every 10 - 15 000 km.
As with the majority of other cars/brands as well. "Long Life shifts" every 30 000 km kills the engine in any car.
Can you specify early models ? 2008-2009 ?
@@cagsanozbek4210 Yes, the first models from 2006 to around 2008.
Depending on how it is driven, how many owners etc As far as I know vs the clutch. My experience with an Audi R8 from 2008 after only 80 000 km and info about this online on UA-cam etc. On the early models like this it is possible to use the flywheel/clutch from the V10 version on the V8 version as far as I know = much better/stronger clutch that last longer than usual on the V8 version. The construction leads to very high temperature in the clutch area. But look online for more info vs the flywheel/clutch.
@@janomnia Thanks for detailed reply! Can we say that 2009 and > models has no/less problems ?
@@cagsanozbek4210 Every car model has its problems, more or less. Some say that the 2006 model was the best ever...and some tell you to avoid the 2008 model in particular. I can only speak for myself and I would say that it depends on each specific car. How it is driven and how it is taken care of.
I was considering one. Forget it! I’ll get a newer version of my E350 coupe. 😂
Yesterday i dreamed about this car and the only things i did was construction work and i saw ferarris and ashtons on that day
Thanks great advice.......your coming with me when i buy mine lol
This is a proper video, just what I was looking for 👍
Very welcome! Good luck with your search
Great video! One quick question: When you speak of "early cars" and frame problems, How early? Do you mean only the first year of production? First couple of years? At what point is this no longer a problem? Thanks!
Thanks Mr dood! It's largely believed that Audi updated the design somewhere around the 2010 model year. There was never an official bulletin (as this would have meant AUDI GMBH admitting a defect and having to recall earlier cars). One other thing I'd say on this topic is generally they crack on the right hand side (if looking at the car from the rear) - there does appear to be more left hand drive cars with cracks - my theory on this is with a left hand drive car, the right side of the car rides alongside the kerb with more potholes, chance of debris on the road etc.
@@ScottishCarClan Well thanks for the detailed reply man. Not sure if I'll ever pony up for an R8 but I never say never. For now, pretending my S5 is a baby R8 will have to do! Cheers!
@@mrdood740 Your very welcome, S5 is also a wonderful car!
Thanks for this excellent video!
With regards to the mag ride - if it does fail how does it affect the car? Is it just not working or is it a bigger issue than that?
Bigger issue unfortunately James... It bangs over every little bump and road imperfection. The car feels sloppy too. It's also an MOT failure which is the test we're required to pass every year here in the UK (apologies if you're from the UK I can't see where your writing from!)
Nice car. Awful council estate location. The ugly houses make the car look even better. Surprised it wasn't stolen or vandalised as you filmed!
Haha I filmed here because it was a big empty car park and I wouldn't be bothering anyone! Can't comment on the street but thank you for the nice comment on the car :-)
Which version is more reliable v8 or v10 ?
You didn't mention the ac compressor going out every summer
Very helpful well made video!
Great video thanks. Subbed.
Thanks for the sub!
Well Done, very informative
Thanks!
Do you have an English version of the video?
Well. Looks like it’s a Sunday car 🤣
Really good video, appreciated.
Glad it was helpful Marvin! You're very welcome
Woo, Scotland! Have you seen ‘cars of Glasgow’? Another Scottish UA-camr
I have not David, I'll check them out!
Great vid
Great vid👌🏽
My air conditioning switch lights up then turns off pretty much immediately, it’s had a regas
Try the A/C switch behind the front bumper!
Considering an 09 R tronic R8 over my C63 2012, though a bit skeptical as the clutch change is costly, and magneride suspension prone to fail. What do you reckon?
Clutch change is expensive, there's no way around that ~ £3,000 BUT they do last quite a long time compared to the Ferrari / Lamborghini equivalent. You can also get a clutch report from the car to tell you how worn it is. You could do this and use it negotiate a better deal?
Magride suspension is prone to failure. Try to find one without it or you could also swap it out once it fails to a set of coilovers.
If you want one bad enough, go for it :-)
@@ScottishCarClan thanks so much man, yeah i will most probably go for it but im taking my time wishing to find a manual. Btw great reviews thanks again
Thanks man! Super helpful.
Another quick question if I may please ask for your thoughts. The steering when almost but not quite on full lock makes a groaning sound which can only be described as sounding somewhat like a n old wooden door opening. I have replaced the tires hoping this might address it but alas not. This doesn’t seem to improve after driving and warming up so to speak. Do you think it could possibly be bushes.
Noise from bushes is usually louder in cold weather, have you noticed it worsen or better depending on temperature? Anti roll bar bushes can be common for a bit of noise on R8's. Does it make the noise when turning the wheel stationary or only when your moving?
@@ScottishCarClan Hi Thank you for coming back to me. It doesn't seem to improve or worsen the more i drive (hot / cold) and is really only noticeable from the front when actually moving...so i would no not audible when stationary and turning the wheel.👍
I'm 190 cm and can't really fit in the drivers seat.
I wouldn't look at jacking up someone's car. Stick your phone in each wheel arch and take a few pictures - with the flash on of course.
Brad I can understand that. Unfortunately with these shocks you need to take the load off them to see if the seals on the slides are OK or not. I'd only ever recommended jacking and taking a look if you're totally comfortable otherwise you are correct.
@@ScottishCarClan I know R8's are relatively difficult to jack up and I wouldn't want a prospective buyer having a go. If they arrange to for it go up on a ramp fair enough. All the same, if you're going to buy an R8 budget for quite high maintenance costs - and don't use a main dealer. The upside is they are great to drive.
Hiya buddy that was a super detailed video, I just bought one and wanted some advice when topping up power steering fluid, and how to check it properly
Hey there! You'll find the reservoir for the power steering to the rear nearside of the engine bay. If you open it (can sometimes be tight!) there are indicators inside it for min & max. Good luck!
Hi could you explain a Naturally Aspirated Engine, im still a novice R8 owner. Thank you
Hi Raj, N/A or Naturally Aspirated relates to way the car breathes. In the case of the R8 there is no Turbo or Supercharger which are classed as 'Forced Induction'. The induction is therefore 'naturally' produced by the combustion cycle thus the name.
You gotta be shitting me bru, you purchased a road legal f1 level performance car and you didn't know what NA, turbo is ?
after this video I went and got the v10 model and its superb
Fantastic, that's what I like to hear!
Where are you finding these things for £35,000???
The best I can find is like £40,000, and those are always in TERRIBLE condition.
There are plenty here in the UK for as little as £30k believe it or not! However I'd always spend a little more to get a good one!
@@ScottishCarClan
Are you going around to dealerships or on a special website to find these deals.
I live in America, and I have never actually gone used car shopping around. But the best I ever see is around the equivalent of £40,000 on like autotrader, cargurus, etc.
@@Dr.HowieFeltersnatch I think the R8 just carries a bit of a premium in the USA unfortunately! Remember to check out the owners forums and owners clubs for cars coming up for sale. Generally those guys take good care of their cars and you may just snag a bargain!
Hi, great video, thanks! Can I have the company name in Polland for mag ride repair?
Hi Zsolt, they're called Nagengast
@@ScottishCarClan Got it! Many thanks
Thanks for the video. Handy things to know 👍👍
Thanks for the kind comment!
Amazing video, you got my subscription.
Thanks so much Ryan, welcome aboard!
Do r8s without mag-ride have suspension/ dampener issues?
Hi Oskar, great question! They do not have the same issues. This is why if you look at 2007-2010 r8's around 80% of them have magride fitted where as from 2010/2011 onwards very few have it fitted. By this point everyone had realized that the magride was troublesome and went back to the standard passive suspension. A shame really as the mag ride is a great system (when it works!)
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great content 👌
Thank you Hardev! Much appreciated
I soooo want an Audi R8...made by Lexus.
The LFA is a slightly higher budget unfortunately!
Very good video !
Yes this info for the v10 would be great to see.
No problem, its still on the cards. Hopefully soon!

Are the discs warped or is it pad material fusing to the disc?
Usually warped discs on these graham
@@ScottishCarClan thanks, what year did the frame get changed? Great vides by the way.
great video........I would love one on the mag suspension issue. I heard you could just change it out.
Yeah that’s correct Eric. You can swap it for coilovers or just refurbish the mag ride. Both = money however…
@@ScottishCarClancoilovers how much will cost ?
What if I didn't change it ?
Great video..and helped me with my R8 purchase last week..so thank you. I do have one question though about chassis cracks and you mention that it was upgraded and only affects the very early cars ….do you know from which year please it was remedied?
Hey Villaman. 2012 is when we can say it changed for sure. Theres a big plate welded in there after that point. What I'm about to say has no official clarification but I have seen a 2007 & 2009 car and the 2009 did appear to have larger welds around the area susceptible to cracking.
@@ScottishCarClan Thank you....ive since had the front trim off mine and gave it a thorough once over and all appears fine...its a 2009.
Went for my first spirited drive at the weekend with a load of Porsche owners. The car really stood out and performed tremendously
