Best: Bad Reputation, Black Rose, Jailbreak, Vagabonds, Johnny the fox, live and dangerous Real good: Chinatown, Thin Lizzy, Fighting Okay: Thunder and lightning, Renegade Bad: Nightlife, Shades, Life/live
My list would differ quite a bit, but I enjoyed this. Your mention of Maiden and Priest in your description of Emerald alone was worth a watch. 1.Fighting 2.Jailbreak 3.Black Rose 4.Thunder and Lightning 5.Bad Reputation 6.Renegade 7.Chinatown 8.Johnny the Fox 9.Nightlife 10.Vagabonds of the Western World 11.Shades of a Blue Orphanage 12.Thin Lizzy
I think Downey is the type of person not to draw attention to himself. I think Phil realized this when he (supposedly) penned the lyrics to "Rocky" in dedication to his talent. Even if it's not true, I still love to think of the song that way.
Interesting to have a view from somebody not quite so steeped in the history and culture of the band. I think you called the two best songs correctly, among some quite eccentric selections, and I would switch the order of the top two albums, just because of Black Rose's sonic superiority. I think the weedy production lets down the songs on Nightlife, and I would boost Vagabonds to number 3 at least. I think Lynott's lyricism may be at its peak on that one. I agree about Chinatown, it's a difficult listen for me, and Thunder and Lightning is a bit too heavy metal. I think the band's strength was in its diversity, but that sometimes didn't convince fans who wanted music to fit to a specific genre.
Chinatown is my very favorite! I find they're at their best when their back is against the wall, not just when every hair is in place and they're at the top of their game. And I am not the only one! Everyone's fandom is different. I got the two disc RSD 2020 version of Chinatown with an LP of demos and they're really cool. I think Jailbreak is great, but it's overrated. I find Johnny the Fox to be the weaker link, and their early work is extremely hit or miss for me.

@@ste.6026 I loved Thunder and Lightning. 'This is the One' & 'Cold Sweat' are absolutely rad! But I also totally get that you're just not into that specific scene. I was aware 'Rosalie' was a Neil Sedaka cover. I'm not sure why I didn't mention that. Maybe I just forgot while writing the episode. Anyway, as I mentioned on the episode... I really tried to get 'Fighting' to work for me. But it just never quite came together for me personally. Sometimes you just have to live with not entirely getting a critical darling and so it is here. Overall though, this was a very fun discography ranker!
@tokyochuchu I didn't know that Sedaka had recorded it, I just thought it was a Bob Segar song... T &L was by far the least to my taste, the rest certainly had high spots on each, a few clunkers here and there, but you mentioned most of them.... I enjoyed this one... Thanks... 🙂🙂🎅🎅
@@ste.6026 Oh shit! Yeah... That's embarrassing on my part. Of course it was Bob Segar. 🤐 I have too many artists fermenting in my brain. 😵💫 After the 2024 album of the year episode I will take a few weeks of hiatus. But when I come back it'll be time for the White Lies discography ranker. Of which I'm currently having a lot of fun with. Plus I'll give that Richard Ashcroft record a f**king good kicking on Chuchu Reviews. You know I love you Ste... Richard Ashcroft on the other hand can command Lloyd Cole to hold his beer while I tan his hide good and proper. 😖🤣
@@tokyochuchu Hahaha... I would LOVE to hear Neil Sedaka cover "Rosalie"!! 😂😂 Nice video! 👍Still haven't begun my Thin Lizzy trip outside of Jailbreak, but I'll get there... 😔 Btw, Bob Seger's early albums - particularly Back in '72 (with "Rosalie") and Seven - are an absolute rockin' blast... I have no idea why he refuses to re-release them, but they're definitely worth checking out! ✌
@tokyochuchu This may surprise you, but I only like 2 to 3 songs on that Richard Ashcroft album, I just wondered what you thought about it, it isn't an album that I intended to put forward at any time, just an after thought... I bought it cheap on a whim and did not like it... I rarely think about putting an album forward just to win, most times I do like the albums, but I have put forward a few just to get your take on them... The Stray Cats was an example, though I have fond memories about that one... If you knew me, you would know that I care not about winning, but I do like to compete... The Lloyd Cole album I like, though it's not a favourite, I thought at the time that would be his most accessable album on a streaming platform, I was indeed sad that you didn't like, but people like what they like... I never stand judgemental over people's tastes.... Whilst I like 'Urban Hymns' by the Verve, unless the others are bad Mr. Ashcroft will be taking my last place also... I recon Neil Sedaka may have done an half decent cover of 'Rosale', it may have been a little different though... I am also looking forward to White Lies, I'm still enjoying my time with them, the standout of the bunch for myself...🎅🎅🎅

Yes, agree. The great run started with Fighting, but I always have to include Nightlife as well as it is when the defining twin lead guitar setup came into being and there are some cracking tracks on there as well.

China Town will always be my favourite despite anything anyone says about it.

really enjoyed that but to barely mention Brian Downey is a bit criminal 😉
