There is no doubt Bon Scott was the band's muse. Without him they struggled without his writing and earthy cheeky demeanour. And they had a gang mentality towards success. Brian Johnstone was a rock journeyman, a good guy and good frontman. I think they picked the best frontman they could. Bon Scott was larger than life and that can't be replaced.
I'LL agree with you - It's MY favorite, but I can understand why other people may feel differently - ALL the Bon albums are amazing. As long as you're a fan, that's really that matters!!
I first heard Powerage back in the day. My first thought was it sounded like Bon took up jogging or something. His vocals were so much better and punchier. Like he had more lung volume, or was in really good shape. He probably didn’t lol. Great album. And if Mal liked it, that’s good enough for me. He was the boss.
I always though this was their bluesiest album, I don't think they ever topped it. I don't listen to AC/DC a lot these days but when I do it's this album.
Love or hate it but I think ball breaker is the closer thing to a bluesy album after this. The production is t everyone’s favorite though. Powerage is timeless

This, for me, is their best album. Love the guitar tone, Bon absolutely wrote his best lyrics (hardly any sexual innuendo there) and above all, the band sounds like they mean it.
My favorite AC/DC album. 40 years ago I would have said either HtH or BiB, but after discovering this album in its entirety in the later '80s, it's been tops on my list. Thanks, Barry.
People who write AC/DC off have probably never heard their early stuff. Personally, They paved my way into Van Halen, Iron Maiden, and eventually punk rock. Growing up in the music era of the 70s and 80s was great
Down Payment Blues is brilliantly structured. The type of song The Stones were trying to write but couldn’t. Remember seeing them on the Powerage tour in Bristol, front row and coming home covered in Angus’s sweat and probably snot !! Bon’s vocal style was so sneery.
AC/DC played at my High School ( Sydney south west suburbs ) in 1975. I was barely 13 at the time and just remembering how cool my school was for having this up and coming band rock the auditorium.
From a fellow Aussie, I was only 8 yrs old in 75 but Acca Dacca were my favourite band back then and still are. Would of loved to have seen them in those early days like you had 👍
Me and my late Dad both loved this album. Every single song is great. Kicked in the Teeth was his favorite,Gimme a Bullet was mine. Wish I could go back and listen to Powerage with my Dad while drinking bourbon and playing cards.
Powerage and the live "If You Want Blood...You've Got It" are the two (2) albums in AC/DC's cannon that just are begging to be released in deluxe and expanded editions.
Great review, and great to highlight such a masterpiece. Powerage has always been one of my favorites ever since I bought the LP in the 80s (still have it). What the heck: let's spin it now.
Being 50, I first came to AC/DC via the Brian Johnson era, and especially Back in Black. Discovering Highway to Hell and the Bon Scott era, I fell in love with that album over Back in Black. Going back further, and after repeated listens, I too came to the conclusion that Powerage is THE AC/DC album that all AC/DC albums, regardless of era, should be judged against.
My favourite album from the band- it's got something a little different, a little extra, and really feels like there's a different kind of heart put into it.
For me it's their finest moment. Down Payment Blues being my favorite song on this album. Bon Scott pouring his heart out on vinyl. It's a beautiful thing. 5 out of 5 stars.
Great analysis there, being a lifelong AC/DC Fan from 76 buying all those albums when they came out and seeing them at The Marquee in London Oct 76, Powerage and Let There Be Rock are The 2 True Definitive AC/DC Albums by Far, Pure Griity Rock Music , The Next were Polished and still Monumental, Powerage is Their Best Lyrical, Song Story Gritty album, Let There Be Rock is too my #1 Album of All Time , love the wordsmithing 👌
Picked this album up on Vinyl from a newsagents in North Norfolk around 1985 ? Got what now appears to be at the time a German import version as it has 10 tracks - starting off with Rock n Roll Damnation Loved it then and still love it today all these years later and yes I still own that original vinyl 🤘
AC/DCs best album easily, deepest and most poetic lyrics, really beautiful composition that dont all sound the same and actually go through different styles and tempos (Down Payment Blues for example or Sin City or GOne Shootin' which is an R&B song, no joke!).
Simple, powerful riffs, so tight with the bass and drums. Compulsive foot tapping rock, economical and deadly. After that it got too bombastic. You can't bang your head forever.
A local radio station here in southern New England, WAAF, used to play debut albums late at night. This is how I first learned about AC/DC. I loved the album, so I went out and bought it, along with an AC/DC t-shirt. So proud of myself for discovering this band first in my high school. Everyone looked at me weird when I wore the shirt to school. I was told AC/DC meant I could 'go either way'. Dang!
I remember WAAF! (I grew up about 45 miles from Boston). In Jr. High School one of my friends was wearing an AC/DC t-shirt and our math teacher said: "ACDC? What's that mean? You go both ways?" Not really an appropriate thing to say to a 12 year old kid, but that teacher was an asshole.
Bought in Chester on the Friday, went to see them in the Liverpool Empire on the Saturday. 1978. Rock and Roll Damnation was not on the album, but got the 12” single.
My younger brother was into AC/DC before me, I think the early Powerage pressings didn’t include Rock’n’Roll Damnation but like you he had that as a single. He made a home tape for me with Rock’n’Roll Damnation in between sides 1&2 and I listened to that for years. Eventually I bought Powerage on vinyl which opened with Rock’n’Roll Damnation which seemed a bit weird. Later still I bought the album on CD which has a different ending to Down Payment Blues (as well as some differences to other tracks which is less apparent) but no Cold Hearted Man - one of my favourite tracks !
Cliff Williams joined and took the band to another level. The following Live album "If You Want Blood ... " shows exactly what Mal was always dreaming of. Tightness! Cliff provided tightness and cleverness to their music. Mal's best decision by far. Guys like CW aren't called Secret Weapons for no reason. John Deacon - former Queen bassist - was one of them too. Mercury knew that too. He once stated: ‘I can only write songs as good as the bass player is capable of." All the outspoken musicians are my all-time favs in Rock. I am just a mid-class musician (Piano, Bass, Guitar). Most of the time I play bass. I learned so much from them. Both players - Williams and Deacon had that "less is more" thing and that's what Rock music needs. CW once said: ‘I like the music of our band and that's what I work for. I'm a co-worker." Quote from JD: It's not about how many notes you play in one bar. It's about how many you don't play. Breaks are music too." Damn right, guys!
@@zachbos5108I've read before where it's said that it was actually George Young playing the bass, but thats only what George says, the other members of AC DC and Cliff Williams himself say he played the bass parts, I believe Cliff did play the bass on this album seeing as how all the AC DC albums after powerage has good bass similar to powerage
Also definetely my favorite album from AC/DC. It has a dark sound with fantastic nihilistic songs like sin city, gimme a bullet or whats next to the moon. Simply a master piece ! For some reaons AC/DC however never played some songs (eg gimme a bullet or whats next to the moon) from Powerage live.
I dig this one. I remember when a friend played this in my dorm back in ‘78 when new, and I was not impressed. But like a lot of transitional and varied/uneven albums it’s an easy top 3 from these guys, and might get the most replay TBH. Happy New Year everybody!
I recently got this album. Not because I wanted it, but just to complete my Bon Scott era collection. Without ever hearing it I had always written it off as just a weak attempt with no hits. Once I got it I was blown away with how different and good it actually is.
Powerage was the band reaching maturity but not the world wide success yet: Perfect moment in time captured. It's the record I always recommend when I want someone to listen to AC/DC beyond the overplayed tunes (which I still love)
Down payment blues lyrics - without stretching too far - makes me look back on my life then when I was about 18 as very close to the truth. Great album.
First AC/DC album I bought with my Jr. High graduation money back in June 1978 (I had taped Dirty Deeds & the ‘77 Old Waldorf show off KSAN radio earlier in ‘78). Still my favorite to this day.
Caught the TNT tour ,Nugent,AC DC ,Scorpions 79 Right before highway to hell came out ,they did the title track and some other stuff from it, talk about ringing ears
Loved this album once I got into the group in early 1981 when I was 15 and bought all their back catalogue, including the Australian originals. I was given funny looks when I had this on a C90 cassette tape (it was a long time ago) with Flick of the Switch on the other side. In my mind, the 2 unrecognized gems from the Bon and Brian eras.
I remember first hearing "Sin City" on my buddie's stereo back in the early 80's. We were both just blown away. We'd pass by each other in the high school hall.....I'd say "ladders".......he'd reply "and snakes".....then later in the day I'd say "ladders give...".....he'd reply in kind....and so the day went. First saw this band on the "For Those About to Rock" tour.....damn. Saw them twice after....each show was incredible.
It's a rock n roll gem. Riff Raff is awesome the Young brothers are playing their arses off on that. Another great song is Gone Shootin'. 10/10. RIP Bon you are missed.
It is their artistic pinnacle and last proper Albert’s album with Vanda and Young (George, the older brother of The Easybeats) production. Sad news this week as the former Young family home in Burwood Sydney has just been demolished by the local council, despite the fact that it was on the historical homes register.
@rmoz2729 If a dish is cooked in two different places by the same chef using the same cooking utensils and the same ingredients, is the cheese omelet not "proper?" Come on, be serious.
Vanda and Young didn't produce the Easybeats, They were two members of the Easybeats, They were produced by Ted Albert (The CEO of Albert records) then later produced by Shel Talmy
I completely agree, for me this album has always represented the essence of the band, it is the best album and has powerful pieces of pure rock and roll. Down Payment Blues is epic!
My favourite - it’s certainly different from the others. I liked the sound of it too as on my old stereo in my bedroom it sounded like the band were there just behind the speaker cloth right here with me - sort of a nearby sound not a big room / huge studio sound
being a fan since '79 or so and owning every acdc album I could find since that day...... I struggle with my favorite album selection. but powerage is always my first response when asked. but I have other "favorites", many others! flick of the switch comes to mind, as does back in black, high voltage, and lest we forget, let there be rock. dirty deeds was also epic in my youth. it was the first album I ever bought. the first album I ever paid my money for. the album that made me a fan. I'm talkin' albums not songs. but here we are at the closing end of acdc"s history and I am gonna say...... powerage is acdc!!!!!!!
I had a 2000 Volvo V70R that had an in-dash multi disc changer, and eventually it started eating CDs. It would leave a groove worn into the CD that would make it unreadable. But somehow, even after getting worn by it, my copy of Powerage soldiered on, never missing a beat. Because it was the only CD that would actually play, it lived in there for years. I got to know this album VERY well, I still absolutely love it from start to finish, and its easily my top ACDC album
It’s good to have as there are a few different mixes/edits on the European album. It substitutes Cold Hearted Man (which has a bit of a Flick Of the Switch riff,) in place of Rock N Roll Damnation. Well worth listening to especially if you’ve listened to the US version a lot.
@@rumblehat4357there are 3 different versions of. The 1st European press has 9 tracks, omitting R n R Damnation ( but has Cold Hearted Man) and has a slightly different mix. The 2nd European version has 10 tracks, a different mix to the 1st European press and has Cold Hearted Man. The 3rd (US version) is different again with 9 tracks ( no CHM) and this too is slightly different in the mix.
@@goldstoneghost2861interesting. I have the original Euro LP from 1978. It has Cold Hearted Man, omits Rock N Roll Damnation and has different mixes of quite a few songs, very obviously different mixes. It has 9 tracks. The only songs that sound like the same mixes are Sin City and Riff Raff. Possibly Gimme A Bullet is the same mix.
My personal favourite too, Highway to hell gets a lot of love from fans ref the Bon era, & rightly so but it's Powerage I go for if I want some early DC. Bon was my first rock idol, as good as Brian was/is he doesn't have that attitude & swagger Bon owned, it gave the band that extra 10% which was so appealing to us fans. Great review pal. Cheers

With no disrespect meant to Brian Johnson, Bon Scott was the secret sauce for AC/DC. His singing and lyrics really made the band special.
Yeah, his lyrics are much undervalued. He had a terrific combination of wit and cynicism.

@ Maybe but BUYV was not recorded in Australia at Albert’s in Sydney so not a ‘proper’ Albert’s production.
@rmoz2729 If a dish is cooked in two different places by the same chef using the same cooking utensils and the same ingredients, is the cheese omelet not "proper?" Come on, be serious.
Great review, thankyou!
Vanda and Young didn't produce the Easybeats, They were two members of the Easybeats, They were produced by Ted Albert (The CEO of Albert records) then later produced by Shel Talmy
I think Vanda and Young produced the last album by the band titled 'Friends'
I completely agree, for me this album has always represented the essence of the band, it is the best album and has powerful pieces of pure rock and roll. Down Payment Blues is epic!
Permanent spot on my all time favorite albums list
My favourite - it’s certainly different from the others. I liked the sound of it too as on my old stereo in my bedroom it sounded like the band were there just behind the speaker cloth right here with me - sort of a nearby sound not a big room / huge studio sound
Wonderful review. You are really good at this.
Raw unadulterated rock n roll! By far my fav AC/DC album. Maybe my fav album of all time
Great review by the way
being a fan since '79 or so and owning every acdc album I could find since that day......
There's also an alternate version with a song called Cold Hearted Man on it, wish I had that version.
It's on UA-cam just search Powerage European Version the channel is AC/DC Portugal
My favorite by far
My first and favourite, , bought with my fist paycheck aged 12...Rock n Roll at it's finest
Best album for me. When I learned to play Riff Raff I couldn’t stop. What an awesome riff that is.
Still one of my favourite albums!
Deep & meaningful lyrics that could never be topped after that..
Just amazing!!
Thanks Barry. A firm favourite in my collection.👍🤘
Great work my friend!
40 year fanatic here who loves Bon Scott. Powerage is my Favorite AC DC album!
"as we all chow down on the indigestible cud of the world" is an amazing description of the drudgery of life; damn man! Beautifully phrased!
Cheers
The power chords in this Album are relentless and hypnotic
Powerage is my favorite AC/DC album. This is the album that kicks you in the gut.
Their absolute best album. No hits but every song is a banger.
