Russia invaded Georgia back in 2008 and was making moves to push into the country long before that, caused one of my college friends in 2000 to have trouble getting back to the U.S.. The protest were because of a "foreign agents" law the Russian government is pushing to have all their client states pass. The law criminalizes all people who work for a company or aide organization that receives funding above a certain level from a foreign country, whether it is the people that live in one or an international funding source. Russia invaded Georgia back in 2008 and was making moves to push into the country long before that, caused one of my college friends in 2000 to have trouble getting back to the U.S.. They had some protests earlier this year, that have simmered as they are hoping to remove the Russian puppet government in the Oct elections.
The protest were because of a "foreign agents" law the Russian government is pushing to have all their client states pass.
Russia is propagandizing the law as being equivalent to western foreign agents laws for lobbyists, but it's not. The law criminalizes all people who work for a company or aide organization that receives funding above a certain level from a foreign country, whether it is the people that live in one or an international funding source. So NGO and aide organizations under the law are being criminalized, as in many of the countries, Georgia included, those organizations couldn't operate without it. Also, the term being used in Georgia and elsewhere for "agents" is better translated as a "spy" and/or worse "traitor". In Georgia it is used as a slur. So yeah, Russians suck. And the people of the former Soviet Union are largely aware of it and tired of taking it.
