- A quick, simple, and to the point video on how to operate your Hayward H-Series Pool Heater both in natural gas or propane format. This covers all models from the 150k BTU unit up to the 400k BTU unit.

It gets hot within a split second of turning on the unit. The build quality is exceptionally good and is safe to be around kids and pets. This one is super quiet and can be kept on while in office meetings, my wife loved it. It shows the temperature right on the unit which is very useful and adding a rotating feature helps to heat up the surrounding, so other people will not fight with you for heat. It is right as described in the description..!! Definitely recommend!!
It displays an orange exclamation mark and the flame won't light green, why?

Fuck don't use the gas guy again you cant use black pipe for gas because it rusts internally also the drip leg cant be on a straight line like that. Tells me gas was never permitted...

Mine gives error code "SB" which the manual says "keypad stuck button error" but power cycling and such isn't fixing anything. Ideas?
@DrDwizz Generally with that one, you have to replace the control panel which is pretty simple and straight forward. Just be sure that you turn off the power to the heater via its breaker before you swap the panel out.
Thanks for the video. When I want to turn it off it won’t. The power light and pool light are both illuminated and heater still runs.
I just bought a house with this heater, it’s an inground pool and there are valves I need to open or it will flash LO, any information you can give me about these valves?
I have the same what heater, mine goes into LO mode, I’ve even went so far as remove the filter entirely. When I switch it on, it won’t lite itself unless I put a torch in site glass, I have a new glow thingy in it. Lol. Name is gone, it won’t lite. But with the torch it does, will only run for about 30 sec then quits. Reads LO. Any ideas?
I have this exact heater and I'm trying to winterize it. Are there any more drain plugs besides the one on the header? Do I need to disconnect the water pressure switch like my previous heater?
There are 2 winter plugs on the manifold and both should be removed during the winterization process.
I am seeing "EC" on the display. Every couple of minutes it shows 1.88 for a split second and switches back to EC.
I have a hatward FDN400.
Any idea what the issue is? I couldn't find it in the manual.

Firstly you will want to turn off the gas supply valve to the heater and then, remove its winter plugs and make sure its fully blown out. Every pool is different though so you will want to be sure to contact your local pool service professionals for 100% accurate advice.
Thanks for this video! Question: My Hayward H Series heater runs perfectly except for a LO code that comes on whenever the pump isn't running, even with the heater in standby. I always turn the heater off before turning off the pump, and as long as the pump runs, there's no LO code. As soon as I turn off the pump, the LO code appears. When I start the pump again, the LO code is cleared. Over and over again. Is this normal?

That is entirely normal operation for the heater :) It is doing what it should be doing.
My pool is cool due to shading/screen cover in the back yard. I would like to raise it about ten degrees for a month or two during the summer. The pool usually runs for around 8 hours a day. I wonder if I need to run it longer or at night in order to heat or just 8 hours a day like usual. Not sure if heating and then natural cooling of water and then reheating is less efficient or a constant temperature is. I understand that running the pool pump for long hours will be more expensive. In our service area, it's more efficient to maintain a temperature than to let it swing large amounts up and down because the amount of energy used to maintain vs raise the temp 10-20 is drastically different.
Brand new heater installed last year. Never used because of bad weather and end of the season happening. My pool company opened my pool yesterday. They said to turn on the pool pump, put the heater on pool mode, and set the temperature. I did this about three hours ago. The flame icon isn’t lit. It still says lo. What am I doing wrong?

So you have to physically turn on the heater everyday? Or can it just be in standby until the pool pump kicks on and then it automatically comes on

Hi, my hayward heater heats even when it’s on standby. Standby AND pool lights are both on. It wasn’t like that until about a month ago somehow my pool got really hot and discovered it’s on when it’s standby. Have any idea?
When you turn heater off do you close your gas and change water back to other return? I guess what I’m asking if it running Thur heater but off does that wear it out?
Thank you for this. We have a Hayward OmniLogic Panel controlling our Heater. We can't set the temperature above 84º F even thought the Heater Itself has a lockout set at 90º F. Any Suggestions?

I currently have my Haward Pump set to pump on high (80%) for 4 hours during the middle of the day to avoid making noise when the neighbors are home. For the remainder of the day, it operates on 40% to be quiet, but still keep the pool circulating water. Am I able to leave the Hayward Heater on pool mode all the time during my schedule?

I bought a brand new one just like this we have tried everything it won't stay lite only about 3 seconds we have new full tank new wire new regulator 😢
IF code. Just trying it for the first time this year. Everything is new install last summer. How can I troubleshoot the IF code ? Thanks
IF code specifically pertains to Ignition Failure almost 100% of the time related to fuel supply to the heater. First, check that your shut off valve on your gas line is on. Second, make sure your gas regulator, inside the front panel of the heater is on. If they both are, make sure you don't have any other shut off valves between your gas meter and your heater that are off.
If all of that checks out you then likely have a clogged fuel orifice from spiders or other bugs causing the error code which, again, is specifically related to an ignition failure due to a fuel delivery obstacle.

However, we just have new pool heater installed, and has all valves on for the gas and still doesn't work ! it gives sound that it is turning on, and then shuts off in a second ! and after a few tries, IF code comes up. what should we do? Pool guy has no idea !!! we even called gas company to check the gas pressure and they said we have more than enough.
@@drpalak79 That almost sounds like one of the gas orifices is clogged. It does happen. We would suggest calling an HVAC company to investigate that and have your pool person submit it as a warranty claim for the HVAC companies time.
When I turn mine back to off or idle mode the code LO comes up. Is that normal? Everything is off and I don't hear anymore noise from the heater.
Hi. When my heater turns on. The current water temperature begins to rise rapidly after it rises 6 or 7 degrees in a matter of seconds then the heater turns off and gives a HS code. Any idea what the issue could be? Thank you
1st time starting up Hayward propane 400k BTU and we get an error code of bo can seem to get it to start up. Any suggestions?
bo means it's set to remote control (smart pool controller). hold the 3 lines + the minus for 3 seconds for manual operation

Hi Mark! Thanks a ton for your comment. As far as energy costs for the heater, that will vary drastically depending on where in the country you're located. In the Rochester, NY area, average pool temps are 83* and clients spend around $200 extra per month average to heat a pool of your size.

I have a 21k gallon pool and a Hayward 400k BTU propane heater. What VSP rpm do you recommend running at for optimal heating? I'm using a Hayward 32950VSP. I never go below 2900 rpm as directed, but that's a minimum for the water sensor on the heater I believe. Also, does having the waterfall features on help or hurt the heating? I thought it may distribute warm water better.

Hello! Apologies for the delay in response here. Your VSP can range anywhere from 2900rpms to 3500rpms and so it looks like you found the right spot for operation.
Regarding efficient distribution of the heat, remember that pool water loses heat due to surface area and so any time you're increasing that surface area, such as running your waterfall, you'll lose heat faster. It's probably immeasurable though unless you have a large waterfall but that's the basic science behind efficiently heating your pool.
Should we have a cover for our pool equipment?
If the pool is closed, there is no harm in covering your equipment with a tarp. If you live in an area where you have mice, it's not a bad idea to toss some mothballs under the tarp to keep them away.

When I turn heater off I get a lo error. It only occurs when filter is also off
But I expected that if heater is off then lo error should not be showing

What is the difference between spa mode and pool mode? Is it the obvious, per application for a spa or pool OR does the heater actually do something functionally different in maintaining the water temperature? I ask only because I notice my wife turning on our/this heater for our pool and it’s on “spa” mode per your video.
So why would the jacuzzi light be red and not orange??
Can you tell me if there's anything different I should do on the first initial start up? Our pool guys didn't test it as the pipe hadn't been laid.
I would love the answer to this as well - exact same thing is happening to me - my contractor set the heater up, then gas line was put in by the gas guys - but they didn't check it - water is filtering - and the flame light comes on, then goes back off, repeat ... then eventually the (!) lights up

You'll just want to run the heater like normal. Don't be surprised if it smells weird like it's burning - that entirely normal for most any appliance the first time it fires. That smell will go ahead within a day or so. Then, just enjoy your heated pool!!
What if I run spa mode if I don't have a spa
SPA mode just let's you take the temperature up higher, by default, than POOL mode.

LO is not flow thus your pump has to be running to turn on the heater. The water always runs though the heater but you turn it on when needed, you have to also set the board to remote or you’ll have to manually set it as shown.

Not enough water I believe
Low water pressure ,it's normal if heater is bypass. What i do after use it ,i bypass the heater and drain the remain water from the heater exchanger using the relief valve ,then LO show up due to there is not water in exchanger.
Question: I have the same heater (natural gas), 2 months old, and I smell semi-strong C/O. The install Gas company says all lines check out, and heater checks out. They said the fix is to have my gas company do a meter upgrade, basically saying my pressure should be increased. Does this make sense?
Hi Brad! That is a very real possibility with needing to upgrade the meter however, which ever company installed the heater or gas line should have told you that before they ran the gas line. Also you'll want to make sure the gas line is of proper size for the distance upon which it travels from the meter to the unit.

It's an H250FDN. Maybe the camera makes the heater look a little smaller.

Hi i turned on my Hayward heater on for the first time and i have a bo alarm i ran the pump and set the heat to 100 degrees 2 hours later the temperature is still the same any idea how i can trouble shoot this? Thanks
Does the fan constantly blow? I have an older Hayward and the heating light goes on and then off and stays in system normal. I am not sure if the fan should constantly run or not
All models are different but, with this specific H-Series heater, the fan (blower) should be running always when the heater is heating. That's how it exhausts the spent gas.
