  • We begin the day at behind the staff housing at Paronella Park and quickly pack our panniers and hit the long climb to the Atherton Tablelands.
Along the way we see a huge sugarcane refinery and buy some locally grown tea.
Once in Atherton, we visit the Hou Wang Chinese Temple Museum to learn about the area's Chinese immigrant history and agree to house-sit for a friend of a friend.

D&B Cycling Australia is a video series documenting our time bicycle touring Australia; a bicycle tour led by our desire to seek out roadside attractions -- everything from the interesting and quirky, to the macabre and obscure.
We had initially planned on bike touring Australia as the first leg of an around the world bike tour, but the Covid-19 Pandemic that struck mid way through the trip forced us to change our plans and extend our Australian cycling adventure.
Thankfully Australia is a huge country with plenty to see, so we'll continue cycling around Australia until it's time to move on to the next adventure.

That was pretty fun! I had a while segment filmed of me roasting green coffee beans and eventually making it into coffee, but it didn't make the cut. Maybe I'll put it out as a "Short" 🤷🏻‍♂️

We travel to see amazing things and to go to interesting places. That's what it's all about for us! So, it makes sense to include it in the videos! 😁

Really glad you found a nice place to settle down for awhile. Atherton Tablelands really is a beautiful place.
Might it be “we came for a week and never left” when you’re talking to the grandkids perhaps?

The Tablelands really are lovely. Can't see us staying for THAT long, but we'll definitely be here for a while! 😁

Wow, you sure packed a lot into this one, D & B! As well as most of the rest, I was interested in your meal of Refried Beans. A niece of mine suggested that I give them a try, seeing as I was getting 'into' wraps. Well, I didn't mind the taste but I was disappointed to read on the wrapper that they would last only a short time after opening. So, how did you get on with them? I mean, did you eat all of it in that one meal or what? Very sad story about what happened to that Chinese 'colony''; Sadly, Chinese people were treated very poorly in the early years of our country. You sure seem to have 'fallen on your feet' at Atherton!

You're not wrong about the treatment of Chinese people at that time. Very sad...
Regarding the beans - we really enjoy them, but would have preferred something else to go with them! Some cheese, tomatoes, etc.... We've gotten along fine with eating a can over a few days, but they're not particularly economic compared to other options.

Hello guys! Just discovered your channel as my dream is to backcycling the tablelands this fall/winter and was wondering how safe did you feel the road was?
Thank you for your video, so inspiring 😊

      Thank-you Pauline!
Which road in particular would you like to know about?
In general we find the bitumen roads of the Tablelands aren't the best/safest, but thankfully there are plenty of quiet gravel roads that are fantastic.
If you can give us some specifics we'd be happy to help! 😁

@@VeloObscura I just bought my bike 🚴‍♀️ Thank you, your video was the last push I needed to do it.
I’ve never biked before in Australia. What an amazing feeling to be back on a bicycle!!
I would like to leave from Cairns to join the tablelands but the only way would be Bruce Highway, right?
Is it legal? I’ve tried to find informations but it’s difficult to find. I still have a few months before hitting the road so I’ll search the safest road. But where can I legally bike? Or where can I find this information?
Thank you for your videos, they are inspiring 👋🇦🇺

@@tiupolina - That's excellent news! I'm so glad that we helped to give you the push!
If you were to cycle up to the Tablelands from Cairns, you would either need to ride up the Kuranda Highway, the Gillies Highway or the Palmerston Highway (the way we went).
Kuranda is accessible via Smithfield, North of Cairns, but is a VERY busy road and a VERY steep climb. Riding up the Kuranda would be quite miserable I think and probably not a good idea for someone who is just getting back into it.
The Gillies Highway I have never ridden, but it is apparently very long, steep and windy. I know a lot of people who really enjoy riding down it, but I can't comment on riding up it. It's probably slightly less busy than the Kuranda though.
The Palmerston is a much nicer ride, but you would need to ride the Bruce Highway south to Innisfail. The Bruce is legal to ride on. That's quite a trek, but maybe Innisfail would be worth checking out. There are Croc tours and a Sugarcane museum. The ride up the Palmerston isn't too bad and has plenty of campsites and viewpoints etc.... It's definitely the long way though.
All in all cycling up to the Tablelands from Cairns isn't the best. I would consider getting the bus. You could get the bus from town or Smithfield and put your bike in the luggage compartment underneath - just be careful about that and make sure the driver doesn't throw it on or put stuff on top of it. We've done it before and haven't had any issues.
You could get the bus to Mareeba or to Atherton and start your cycling adventure there. After you're finished you could ride the Kuranda or Gillies back down again.
Once you get up to the Tablelands there are a lot of options for places to ride. I enjoy riding a lap of Lake Tinaroo and there's even a 400km bike route that does a big lap of the Tablelands. Now probably isn't a good time of year, but once the wet is over it's a great place to ride!

@@VeloObscura thank you! I’m giving myself a few months (and for the wet season to be over) to get myself back in shape. It’s definitely a good motivation and an awesome way to see the country.
I was thinking about the bus option which I think is the safest. Good to know I can travel with a bicycle. I wasn’t sure they would accept it in the luggage compartment. I’m so excited and will watch all your videos in the next weeks.
      I’ll give you updates.
      Thanks guys.

      @@tiupolina - Good plan!
If you haven't already, I'd recommend checking out Komoot or RidewithGPS for planning routes as they display bike paths etc... RidewithGPS also has a heatmap which shows you where other people are riding. Strava has this too though and their heatmap is probably better as more people use it.
      Cheers!
