  • In 2021 Leica Camera USA invited me to the Celebration of Photography event held at Leitz Park in Wetzlar, Germany. I invited Juan Martinez of Beers and Cameras as my assistant and videographer to help me capture the event. We were super excited to be given the opportunity to interview Dr.Andreas Kaufmann, but we were also nervous. I sat on the footage for almost a year because I was worried it wasn't good enough. Looking back at the interview a year later, I don't know why I was worried about launching it. Dr.Kaufmann was a gracious interviewee, and his charismatic personality really shows through in this video. A special thanks to Kiran Karnani of Leica Camera USA for the invitation, as well as for arranging this interview.

      He was a pleasure to interview. I had to cut 10 min out as we organically went off topic (watch talk). Perhaps I’ll use it some time in the future :-)

    Great interviews! Leica needs a left-EYED rangefinder!
    Sad about the aps-cs - I hope L2 expands them. I already picked up a scuffed second TL2 demo so I can keep using them.

      @@bigheadtaco basicly the he got really really technical and talks a lot of know-how what you never expect from someone in his position. And when I was in Wetzlar 3 weeks ago in the Store they also told me that Dr. Kaufmann can talk to any developer or engineer on the same level. So that man has my respect in that regard.

      @@xsgt_silverx I guess that's why he has the title of Dr, well deserved. We talked about watches off-camera for about 10 minutes, and his knowledge of the industry and technology is very deep.

    My first Leica was a family camera. Ye Olde Leica IIIa was weighed down with a 50mm f/1.5-9 Taylor-Hobson Xenon pre-war "speed lens" that produced fuzzy, low contrast images due to dirt and clouded lens elements. As soon as I could, I replaced it with a 1950's 50mm f/3.5 Collapsible Elmar, which produced great black-and-white negatives/prints and Kodachrome slides. This was in the late 1960's, when I was a poor college student, so I got what was available. 50mm f/2 Summars and Summitars had Leica Collector price tags. Later on, I bought a Canon P, a 28mm f/2.8 Canon and 105mm f/2.5 Nikkor, all for the cost of an M-series Leica. I bought film and darkroom supplies instead of "optical collector's items.";)

    A photographer using an M is like someone who likes watches and wears a Reverso. People who know look at it and know that you know what you’re doing, but most people won’t even notice.

    Analog M cameras have no technology in them. Why can’t they produce a new film point and shoot for us?

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  Рік тому +1

      Leica has always partnered with a Japanese manufacturer to make any of their compact film point and shoot cameras. Even their digital compact point and shoot cameras are made in partnership with Panasonic. It’s not impossible for Leica to make a compact film point and shoot today, but it’s a lot harder since the majority of manufacturers that use to be subcontracted to make some of the smaller components are no longer in existence. You would basically have to design and manufacture every component yourself, which Leica didn’t even do back in the film days, let alone any Japanese camera manufacturer. I think if Leica partnered with a company like Fujifilm or Seiko-Epson, it may be possible.

    • @vangstr
      @vangstr Рік тому

      @@bigheadtaco perhaps Sony who bought out Minolta could work with Leica - again. But definitely not Fujifilm; they are anti-film company. Speaking of them I think they should take up a new name - Fujidigital! I had no idea that the M7 and it’s electronics were solely Japanese based. No wonder that model was extinguished. We can only fathom the a wishful future when an announcement from a Japanese company to bravely come out with a new film point and shoot camera!😇

    I hope Leica remembers its roots and makes down-to-earth tools for photographers again and not one expensive luxury special model after the other...
    The prices that Leica charges have always been high. But the prices photographers get for their work have fallen sharply and Leica's prices are going up and up and up...
    Leica is now on the way to becoming a luxury bling bling brand only for wealthy privateers and collectors. Which I really think is a shame…
