I remember catching the last few laps of this race live at My grandpas. I was amazed at the speed, and sad for Max Papis. That was the first indycar race that I had actually watched. From then on, I made sure I caught what I could on network television. Once July of 2000 hit, we finally got cable. I watched the entire Michigan 500 live. That finish is still one of the best that I have seen live.
Man, so much nostalgia. Seeing Tim Cindric in anything other than the Penske pits is just weird. Maybe the most attractive cars ever. If not, just behind the 2001-2003 era CART cars. So many blue chip sponsors. Remember when there was more than 3 major beer companies and they all had to sponsor a car to get noticed?
2:05:25 don' lo LOSES! LOSES! LOSES! GOES BY!! PASS TONY! PASS TONY! PASS TONY! PASS TONY! PASS TONY! *DON'T MISS MORE TONY KANAAN !!!!* *WIIIIINS TONY KANAAN !!!!* *WIIIIIIIINS THE BRAZIL IN MICHIGAN !!!!* Words of the narrator Téo José during the best moments of the US500 of 1999 in the SBT station (Brazilian television system)
Yes, that race was heart wrenching. At the time I was supposed to be Neutral and not bias lol. I was in the pits watching for violations. When I watch Max’s car slow down and realizing that they did not have enough fuel. I was mortified. Tony was very Fortunate to get that win since the car ran out of fuel. I just will never forget that race.
I saw this on British TV and the commentator called it right when Max was slowing down, I was screaming something like 'Get a Supreme Court injunction against anyone overtaking Max, that's so unfair'. I worked out around the time that with a bit more fuel, around the alcohol content of a bottle of whiskey Max would have made it over the line first, even if ethanol wasn't the 'right' fuel. The year would turn out far worse for all in October.
