- On March 19, Simon Schama was joined onstage by Adam Hochschild to talk about The Story of the Jews, Mr. Schama's multimedia account of Jewish history from 1000 BCE to present times. He also showed clips from the five-part PBS documentary series. Although Judaism is the only religion that commands us to remember for future generations, Mr. Schama is determined to portray Jewish history not as a history of suffering or Jews as a people apart. It was an entertaining evening with two charming intellectuals on subjects usually discussed reverentially.

34:40 - 35:55 ~ a very interesting segment in which Professor Schama refers to historic Sefardic Jewish longing for beauty - "beauty can be a mitzvah". I believe that is a very good statement and one that reflects biblical teaching as beauty is life enhancing.

To my intense shame I have lived over fifty years calling myself a Christian and it is only in the last three years that I have understood where ant-semitism originates from.
It is for this reason amongst others that I no longer call myself a Christian.
Any Abrahamic faith that so completely turns upon it’s parent faith to commit such fanatical and unremittingly brutal patricide throughout its long and ignominious history as that of Christianity no longer has the right to say that it is the representative of a good god, let along the God of love.
He is sooo engaging and is able to make history accessible

This man has a great appeal of a narrator. I wish he would record parts of the whole book with the passing of time. His writing style may reflect his way of speaking and narrating events, still it lacks the rhythm of the voice, intonation, etc.

It is commonly believed that Abraham was the first Jew. But as you pointed out, he was not. Judah was. Another error commonly made (and this is one that Professor Schama makes) is the notion that Jews were or are the Chosen. The Bible teaches that it is all 12 tribes that are chosen - refer to Deut 14:2. Further, in the Christian New Testament the inheritance promised to Abraham and his seed was extended to all Messianics - that is, those who acknowledge Yashua ben Yosef (commonly called Jesus of Nazareth) as Messiah - Galatians 3:29.

Interestingly, God is the reason the Jews have been persecuted. They disacknowledge God, and He gets their attention, whether they like it or not. You can read much of that history in the Bible, even Jeremiah and Ezekiel, to see the spiritual impetus behind all the politics, even today.
it would have started in about 325AD when Rome became Christian under Constantine, even if Jerusalem had been sacked by Babylonians 1000 years earlier (everyone was fighting everyone in those days).

What this historian claims about Russia doesn’t seem very accurate as though ethnic violence and discrimination everywhere were common in those times, most of the pogroms were committed by Ukrainian nationalists and white anti-communists, if not poles such as Jedwabne massacre. Bolsheviks disarmed any units that committed attacks on Jews. Good historians such as Solzhenitsyn don’t generalize with such broad brush strokes like the word “Russia” on a map.

What quality and character of man is this when Simon says, "I presumptuously say..."
admitting he's written "patronage" for history in "survival"? He demeans my Christ, more crucified Jew than he, denying His prophecies, as easily as all paradoxical unfathomable Midrashim.
But truer telling, Scriptures say His people would be abhorred, by merely denying their God, as Simon would, but for dangerous Rothschilds, and for skin, he surely thinks he should.
Now between Christ crucified and my "sissy" Simon, who is the paid actor, and who is the One? My risen Lord remains sitting on his throne, and Simon will stand to answer.
