  • A conversation with educational philosopher Dr Zak Stein about the future of education, AI, and its dystopian and utopian possibilities. What happens when we create the supermind.
Zak Stein studied philosophy and religion at Hampshire College, and then educational neuroscience, human development, and the philosophy of education at Harvard University. While a student at Harvard, he co-founded what would become Lectica, Inc., a non-profit dedicated to the research-based, justice-oriented reform of large-scale standardized testing in K-12, higher-education, and business. He is also a writer whose work has appeared in a variety of journals including American Psychologist, New Ideas in Psychology, Mind, Brain, and Education, Integral Review, and the Journal of Philosophy of Education.
He has published two books, Social Justice and Educational Measurement a dissertation that traces the history of standardized testing and its ethical implications, and Education in a Time Between Worlds, which expands the philosophical work to include grappling with the relations between schooling and technology more broadly.

I always enjoy listening to and learning from Zak Stein, and this was another excellent conversation from him. The difference between “internal transformation” and “external transformation brought about by technology” is important, but I fear it takes a degree of spiritual training to recognize this difference, which if people aren’t gaining because they’re putting their hopes in AI, then they also don’t know they’re missing out on something…a terrible paradox. The phrase “simulated thinking” is useful, and I like the admonishment that we shouldn’t anthropomorphize computers, because that is going to contribute to us forming habits in which we treat AI as “the same as us” (and thus better at being us then us…). I also really like the insight that we might be searching for a new strong man and leader in AI-that’s brilliant, as was the point that humans are unique in their ability to both disregard the world and to take responsibility for it. Beautifully said!

Also beautifully said. Spiritual training is becoming increasingly necessary.

We are graded on our relationships with sheets, books, and screens...not on our relationships with others. 🤔🧐🤯

John V was promoting the exact opposite of loading in values. You should have a convo or watch his video.

If AI becomes conscious can we stand to learn about that process of emergence? It is not just engineering or everything is just engineering.

Why does this book salesman who studied at Harvard discourage ordinary people from getting an education?
