I bought this amp when I was only fifteen That was 20 years ago at car audio shop in Gainesville Florida I went up there to pick sweet peas during the summer spent half the money I earned out there this was my very first high end amp, the manager was selling it for 500 but he sold to me for 450 since it was a display model my uncle was so jealous hahahaa Anyway it stopped working one day I hooked it up in a hurry with my wife rushing me and I connected the speaker wires incorrectly and it stopped working ever since. I still have it and it would mean the world to me if you could fix it. Great video by the way✌🏽
Excellent!!! I would never have imagined myself checking for false connection contacts in the soldering of the capacitors, I just usually check if the capacitor is inflated or exploited and check its value , thanks, I learned a very good lesson today
I had this amplifier, it's was the best back then and still hold it's ground today. If i remember correctly MRV-1505 was the last to be made in Japan and many consider it to be the best Alpine ever has made. I think MRV-1507 was made in china. What i did wonder about was how and with what you glued the capacitors to the board.
Korea, not China. I guess opening up shop in South Korea where a lot of the semiconductors they use are made was a logistical decision as much as anything.
This > " it's was the best back then and still hold it's ground today." Should be This > It was the best back then and still holds its ground today. It's = It is If saying - it is - doesn't sound correct, then the possession form - its (which doesn't use an apostrophe) should be used in its stead. Did you see what I did there? : )
Do you have any info on pricing. I have this exact amp. I have a compacitor, one of the smaller ones, on the power side that is loose. It does not look like it is loose from the soldering on the back, so I am assuming it is actually broken apart from the other side. Would love some info so I can get it fixed. Thanks
I have the mrv 1005 and powers up but intermittently has no sound so I know what i'm checking when I get time. I'll comment back again let you know the results. The 1005 is pretty damn heavy and that thing looks about about half the size of mine a again! 🏋️ 😂 They really are a beautiful looking amp inside aren't they simplistic and the components just looks classy! 😊 Thanks Kev just hit subscribe and may have questions if my fix isn't as simple as yours. Cheers. Jeff
This is a great video. Your techniques are fantastic. Was wondering what temp you run your iron at and what type of flux you use? Thanks and keep up the great work.
A single 12w3-D4 can only be 2 ohms or 8 ohms, never 4 ohms. Three 12w3-D4 would be either 2.667 ohms final or 6 ohms final. Most likely you were running the amp at 2.667 ohms bridged when that amp is only rated for 4 ohms bridged. Pick Mono Amp for bridged: www.crutchfield.com/S-JsSkfCv7J5m/learn/learningcenter/car/subwoofers_wiring.html
I used industrial hot melt glue around the base of the caps. You could also use a silicone or a silastic type glue. As long as it holds the capacitor from shaking it will be fine.
do you want to work on a Rockford fosgate power 400@4, the amp is part of my collection appears to be missing the lp/hp/fp switch. I would love to have this amp repaired
Great video! You inspired me to open my mrv-1507 that has been sitting in my closet for 10 years. Mosfets are burnt just like this one. Do you service these for a fee? I would love to have my amp working again.
The way you "flooded" the solder on the cap points then sucked off the mixed solder, then cleaned with the isopropyl alcohol is the exact way I have been doing it. I always clean the solder point with Isop. Alc with an old toothbrush to get the surface contaminate free. I was once frowned upon when i also mentioned on Ak that I like to use flux prior to solder. Not sure why, but i find you get a nicer solder point. What are your thoughts ?
18:30. 80 Amps of current?.. I guess it's from a car battery, right? And, how do you measure that. What device are you using. Nice vid. Keep up the good work!
I have a kicker cxa 600.1 amp i have a o scopenwh n i scope the output terminals its shows a normal looking syne wave but makes 0 sound at all and it has a very dim green power light not in protect any ideas? It has 2 output transistors and they get very very very hot pretty darn fast also not showing any shorts acros pos a neg power or pos neg output. Any ideas?
Kevin I have mrv-1000 I sent to U.R.S just for them to call me tell me to old to fix. Is there anyway I can get in touch with you to send it to you. One channel keeps blowing fuse.
With all the information given in the video but without repeating the same thing again, you could have ended the video in 10 minutes, think about it. Don't make electronic repairs boring.
Shouldn’t these manufacturers take this into consideration that amps are being used for large amounts of bass and shake/boom-boom and make those connections thicker and stronger from the get go ???????????? So that never ever happens. Seems cheap concerning construction then. There supposed to be the experts for heck sake. Maybe they need to redesign the whole board with stronger /better connections that last. So that word of mouth will travel from coast to coast that there stuff lasts and is worth the money. GOTTA BE A BETTER WAY.

Its always nice when a repair goes as smooth as planned in the door repaired done out the door. Keep the repair videos coming loving each one.

I had this amp, it was a good solid amp. Should have kept it but the same goes for many amps I've owned.
I liked the video, and now realize the damage from bass and other vibrations on circuit boards. I wonder what else in a car gets damaged with the bass
Humans :)
Thank you so so much! I really appreciate all your help. Just sent you a email.
Nice repairs you do to these vintage auto power amplifiers. What solvent do you use to clean the boards? Alcohol

Depends on the amount of heat I need to flow the joint. I keep it at 750F and work from there. I use Amtech and Chemtronics flux.
It's been a long time, I was running 3 JL 12w3-d4 wired In series to keep 4 ohm.

Thanks for sharing another interesting repair video. What sort of glue will you use on those capacitors?
I used industrial hot melt glue around the base of the caps. You could also use a silicone or a silastic type glue. As long as it holds the capacitor from shaking it will be fine.
"Vibration... is a bitch" lol. Good video.

Adding flux is not a bad thing. It makes a cleaner flowing joint. Some people on AK are rumor repeaters and never touched an iron before.
