I wrote a little more about my paella experience over on Instagram:
In a previous video I mentioned that I wasn't a big fan of paella, one of the main dishes of Spain. But I had to give it another try here on Formentera island. Honest review: I stand by my opinionated opinion that I don't care for it, especially the seafood version. It included two full crabs, sitting there staring at me as if they might still be alive. I wasn't sure what to do with them, so I cracked away at one with a knife and fork until the top of the crab popped off. There wasn't much inside. I put my fork inside, got a chunk of something, put it in my mouth and quickly spit it out. One of the most disgusting things I've ever tasted. I'm not even sure what it was, crab brains I guess? The rest of the dish was more tolerable, but not particularly tasty, brown rice mixed with assorted seafood chunks. Maybe there's a paella out there that I would actually like, but I haven't found it yet. By comparison, the pork and potato dish I showed at the end of my previous video was delicious.

Ee-BEE-thah, Mate! Thaaaat's how you say the name of the world's party-hearty destination.
Remember the Z's in Spain's Spanish (NOT Mexican Spanish) are pronounced like our "th's".
Why is Z pronounced as "th" in Spanish?
In Castilian Spanish, Z and soft C are pronounced TH. This is just the way the pronunciation evolved from the TS that was the standard in the middle ages. If anyone tells you there was a Spanish king with a lisp and his subjects copied him, try selling them a bridge in Sydney.
The best paella is usually in the Canary Islands, on mainland Spain and Balearic you have to check the reviews to find the best place for that. For me seafood paella is one of my favourite dish, but after doing the ancestry check i am lot mediterranean but i am born 1000 km from the sea.
paella in mallorca is called "arroz brut" without safran, because this did not exist on the islands and was far to expensive for them. the beasts who looked at you might have been scampi, but i think these were gambas. i know that mallorqui suck out the head, i hate it, brrrr, but take the legs of, open the gamba and the inner tastes quite differently, might be delicious for people who like it. not everybody likes seafood, thats normal. who likes everything! i do not!
Thanks Gabe for always bringing us on so many cool adventures around the world and showing us the amazing diversity of this planet!!!!
Usually those steps were for smuglers of early 20 century. You can find that all over the Balearic islands, specially in Mallorca. Could be also that they used the stone for building material.
I was also thinking they cut the stone for building material. It's possible the coastline was further out in the past.
Ibiza people nicknamed Formentera "la Roca" (The rock) because they used to sail to Formentera to dig out stones to build their castle, called Dalt Vila
If it used to be a quarry it makes sence being right on the water. Easy transport in the old days❤
The world is just a fascinating place...WOW!
And full of fascinating sisters...wow
@@_____J______ 😀
Here's hoping it never changes....such a beautiful island...the colours are amazing...May a perfect time to visit Spain or Greece....temps are comfortable and crowds are not overwhelming......certainly influenced me to put it on a " to visit" list
WOW! Gabriel you’ve brought us places in Formentera that most people would never see! You are a born explorer thank you! ~Cara 😊
The beginning of your travels this summer are great can’t wait for the next ❤
What a beautiful island keep on showing us more Gabe
20:48 WOW! This is what travel off the beaten path means! Great find Gabriel! ~Cara 😊
Thanks Gabe. Kinda off the beaten path type of travel. Love it. Stay safe bro.
Captivating video this time👌❤️ I’m planning my trip to Tenerife in September and watching you tube I found you Gabriel! Good job & thanks for sharing your walking experience!
Relieved you did that safely ! And thanks for sharing. Amazing
Very interesting video 👍🏖Well done 👏Thanks for sharing and keep on cruising 😁✌
Wow wow wow that cave is amazing love it, a true explorer you are
Awesome!
Looking forward to do that " trail"myself
Love this video!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Hi Gabriel. great island, thank you for sharing interesting video. Be safe my friend, waiting next adventure. Chaos
You never lose your “awe” because that was awesome hike to the cave.😊
How Exciting!
Thanks Gabe, 🫶
Nice unique beautiful place....i love..Formentrra..
Good stuff Gabe
I’m really enjoying Spain with you!
*Gabe is turning into Robert Schock!*
Hi Gabriel, fascinating day in Formentera from a distance they do look like caves. I'm guessing it's not warm enough to do some swimming or you would be in the water. Well at least you tried the paella it gives you that perspective.
Beautiful
Gabriel, you certainly are a brave and adventuresome traveller!
Another great video , thanks Gabriel. I think Formentera looks like a fantastic place - not so commercialised.
Formentera still looks very original, but luxury (hotels, bars) has come in recent years. Every year Formentera is in july and august overcrowded. Many Yachts come from Ibiza and everywhere else to Illetas Beach. The video shows just the natural side of my beloved Island.
I watch your videos with much full! Feels like I'm travelling with you:D
Formentera is amazing!🙂 Your new thumbnails as well👍
I went there once on my first or second time in Ibiza, but next time I'll stay couple of days what nice beautiful place
Back in August1963 we landed on Es Pujols beach on a day trip from Ibeetha (please) . The beach and sea was stunningly beautiful and basically empty ,there were a handful of people plus those that came off our boat. We brought packed lunches from our hotel as they warned us very little food or accommodation was on hand.
The local population was tiny and most left when the tourists left ; the first cement truck had apparently arrived in 1958 …..looks like it’s moved on . Glad the beaches and crystal seas have survived.
Very cool. Times have changed a little, but not a lot I guess, still a pretty quiet island.
Every time you say es Pujols. It reminds me of one of the greatest home run hitters of our time. Albert Pujols. Just retired last season.
Ancient quarry. It looks like level water was much lover when it was done
A blessed good day sir Gabe Wowww what a.nice Very Beautiful Quiet Place 😍 To relax In Island of Formentera Spain I love that Cliff Rock formations Adventure, Perfect Tourist Spots to Unwine Island hopping, and Walk around beach Shores, thank u so much sir Gabe, for your wonderful Excellent Walk around tour video Stay safe Godbless from the Philippines 🇵🇭 sir Marvin 😍👏❤️❤️👏👏👏👏👍
The mark on those caves might be representing a dock area as you said or a place used for storage during the early period, thought it's doubtful.
Hi Gab, I would highly recommend a visit to Sicily😌
Spanish is the name of the language outside of Spain but inside of Spain it is called Castilian or Castellano. The language emerged from Latin in the Castile area of Spain. So the signs are in Catalan and Castellano.
Balearic Islands is also its’ own autonomous region, it is not part of the Catalonia region. Though Catalan is an official language in the islands, there is a Balearic dialect too which has some differences from Catalan. But most everyone speaks Castellano, as everyone is not local, but they are from other parts of Spain.
Got it. 👍
well in mallorca they speak mallorqui, language which is not understood by the catalans, but the people of the balears all of them understand catalan. i was told, that mallorqui is older than catalan. menorca, eivissa and formentera differ slightli with their language to the mallorqui, but all of them understand each others and as well the catalan language.
paella in mallorca is called "arroz brut", without safran, was to expensive and did not exist in the islands. the gambas who looked at you.... take of the feet, open them and eat the inner. mallorqui often suck of the head, i cannot stand it, brrrrr, but love gambas. i know, that these animals of the sea are not liked from anyone and that is normal. who likes everything?? i do not! love your videos of the baleares, thank you so much, you made my day ❤
That seafood paella looks amazing - to me one of the best dishes in the world! Regrettably you could not really appreciate it and much to my surprise there are many people who don't care about rice dishes - while there are millions in Asia living on rice! Otherwise I would have never given a special thought to rice or potatoes - they are just there along with meat, fish or vegetables, I thought!
Wow, didn’t expect to see Roman fort ruins there!
baliaric island indeed!
Gabriel Traveler: Those square looking marks in the rocks where done in the past by stone cutters who would chisel out sandstone blocks for house foundations and to make Corn and wheat grinder stones.
So a quarry, that makes sense. I wonder what time frame, if that's where they got the stones to make the Roman fort or if it was more recent.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos It probably was the site where the Romans quaried the stones for the Roman fort, too bad there wasn't a sign in the area indicating if it was. :)
If that's the case then that's really amazing. Some serious history there.
For the same type of seaside geological formation check out Giants Causeway in Ireland.
That's what I was thinking of. The big difference is the scratch marks which definitely look like evidence of human activity.
Hi Gabe, nice video! When you will visit Makarska, Croatia?
Been there, nice place: www.youtube.com/@gabejedmo/search?query=Makarska
Yes, the Paella dish was sure interesting with the whole cooked crabs.
Yes the place is amazing
New friend here
I like this content
how does an Island like that get its fresh water from?
Awesome video!
the sand/earth filters the water naturally for wells
Gabriel, I’m catalonian. Formentera is not Catalonia, they just speak our language 🙈. We speak spanish too, here and in Formentera. Great video
Do they have a different accent from Barcelona ?
@@RovexHD Yes. Different accent and some words change (like, very few words but still). There are like 4-5 dialects of the catalonian language here. Valenciano (Valencia) is one of them, despite valencians claiming it to be an autonomous language
@@Nostalgia- Mhmmm… of course?
You’re from Texas. Are you american?
About those rocks in the two caves. That might have been a quarry where they took rocks out to build elsewhere.
Paella is a very unique tasting dish. I only have it once in a blue moon, not an every day meal personally,
At the beginning that is a rock quarry from which stone was cut for construction of stone structures
I'm always interested in where water supplies come from on the islands. Are there underground supplies or do they rely on rainfall and storage of same?
Water supply used to come primarily from underground lakes (aquifers) - until recent decades or so because of tourism and overuse the aquifers became contaminated (salty) or dry so they are not always reliable. Desalinization (converting saltwater from the sea) is becoming more prevalent. And imported bottled water of course.
Maybe the overhang/cave may have been a pirates den for storage of contraband?
I like that explanation.
Fantastic island, love the videos and look forward to seeing more! We like paella but only with beef, lamb meats….definitely not the seafood dish (agree with you on that one) 🤮
It reminds me of Porto Santo.
Is it just me or does the shape of Formentera ressemble the head of a spaced-out goat with the two lakes as the eyes and the two capes as the horns?
Pardon my ignorance, but what is that body of water?😊 Ocean or sea? The water is pretty shades of blue. I am so impressed by how clean it is all around.❤
It's the Balearic Sea, part of the Mediterranean. See the map at 0:50 (
@@GabrielTravelerVideos thank you!🙂
Are you filming with DJI now? Seems like it is not a go pro coz if you turn the camera around there's too much noise on the video quality.
Yes, DJI. I've been filming almost all of my videos with the DJI Osmo Action 1 for the past three years.
part time in Ibiza mate enjoy :)
It was Aliens that carved out those rocks, don’t ya know? 😂
They could use these rocks in ancient times as close near the sea stone cubes making site
i dig when you are in spain!!!!
Top
So there aren’t many historical sights ?
That paella looked dried up, been hanging around too long & was a bit slopped on the plate.
Hey I'm starting my own UA-cam channel but I'm not sure the best software to editing videos what's a good recommendation from u .
I've been using Videopad for a decade, good program and it's affordable.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos awesome I'll look into the k so much for the info safe travels been watching for years now
Nice countryside, but what's with the sky?
03:55 You're right, "ses roques" means "the rocks". "Ses" is a Balearic dialectal version of the feminine plural definite article ("les" in standard Catalan, "las" in Spanish).
Great, good to know.
And hotel prices!
Did you happen to catch the Grateful Dead in Europe in 1990??? I remember you mentioned that you were traveling in Europe in 1990....
No, but I saw them a couple years earlier, in fall of 1988 in the Bay Area when I was going to Berkeley High School. And I saw Roger Waters perform live in Berlin, on TV when I was in another town in Germany.
Be careful I want to see more videos of you.
Google says that hotel you passed is over $700/night!
How do you communicate with locals. You speak Spanish?
I speak a little Spanish and many locals speak some English. More on this subject in this video: ua-cam.com/video/pqkkQXztCb4/v-deo.html
Walking along that path was some pretty sketchy shit!!!!👍
Niiice, have you been to Sardinia?
Not yet, but planning on going there this summer.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos we’ll be there second week of July. Santa Teresa di Gallura. Maybe we’ll catch you!!
@NostaIgia It's also part of my plan for this summer to finally visit Liechtenstein and San Marino. We'll see if that actually happens since there are a lot of other places I want to go, including a lot of eastern Europe. And yes I could easily get caught in the Greek islands vortex for a while.
@@VanessaDiazNYC Cool, not sure if or when I'll be there but it's high on my list to visit, if you see me say hello.
👍👍👍
Gabe the new Indiana Jones 🤠
That place is man made , is Like an old quarry maybe to build old Temples and castles
👌☀️✨
Is it meant to be pronounced ibiza or ibifa? british people say the latter. I wonder how the spanish say it
Already by someone went into this cave, as witnessing something funny written in here 24:28.
wow these arent gambas, that are crabs, never had them. the aioli as well olivea are usually served as appetizer and do nothing have to do with the dish
It's a stone quarry. Quarry for stone.
I see, that makes sense. Maybe that's where some of the stone came from to build the Roman fort.
👍👍👍😱😍🙏🙏🙏💃💃💃
Wow, let me guess this, Romans used to cut those rocks to build🤔 or what?
wrote a comment, did not find it. well in the balear islands they do not really speak catalan. i was told in mallorca that the catalans do not understand the mallorqui, menorqui, ibicenc, formentesc because it differs so much to the catalan, but the islanders understand the catalans. i was told as well, that the mallorqui is much older than the catalan. who knows, makes sense, because the catalans cannot understand them.
what i forgot, the islanders understand each others even of the light differences of their language. in mallorca nobody likes to hear that they speak catalan...😊
What if you got to the cave and it housed a dragon or sea creatures 😮 Be careful please.
1st!
Boooooo Yeeeeeaaaahhhhhh
nope
Bro, are you sure you paid €100 per night for that room!! 😮😊
100 euros per night seems ok, but still a bit much.. 😢
This paella doesn‘t look good at all. And they ripped you off, if they charged for the bread which usually is free. Alioli is not at all suitable for paella. You really should give it a third try on the main land. 🙋🏻♀️👍🏼
1St gab
Have you ever thought of wearing something that has the name of your UA-cam channel on it while traveling so others know you are on youtube? People would also ask you about it and it would also give you more subscribers. A hat or a name tag on your shirt would be ideal. Just curious. I would be feel nervous walking around with a camera without some sort of label around me letting everyone know I'm just a youtuber nothing serious lol, don't hurt me.
First
Boom, got it.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos 🎉
dang it!
Food so expensive in third class island!
Don’t go to Ibiza in July, you might have a heart attack.
Paella (pronounced like this: Pie-AY-ah) is de-lish! Mother made it for parties a lot. Sounds like it was better than the one you got. Oh, dear! Yeah, what you ordered doesn't even look much like paella, to be honest with you. It does not look like it has any saffron in it at ll!
Hey Gabriel, I love your videos and especially the Indian ones because I've been to India many times.
However, this video freaked me out a little because if you had fallen or gotten hurt on your adventure, it might have been a long time until you were found. Also, if you are going to be climbing around so much, you need better shoes, especially when balancing on dodgy, crumbling paths and overhangs. Just worried about ya. I want you to keep on travelling.😊
Gabe often acts recklessly while in nature in my opinion. It’s dangerous, Gabe
Dude is from USA and calls a moped a motobike... Wild.
I think it's a 125cc scooter. A moped is 50cc.
